Chapter 44

Jessie crashed hard onto the cold metal floor. Landing squarely on his back, he looked up to see Plague following suit landing just beside him. The ground shook as he landed disorienting Jessie.

"We don't have to do this!" Jessie cried out as he scrambled to his feet. He scanned the area around him noticing he stood on a catwalk.

"Oh, but I want to Jessie." Plague said as he pulled his hair back. "This is my chance to prove I'm the superior one, that Seth made a bad call choosing you over me."

A whirlwind of tendrils appeared at Plague's side as he readied himself to strike.

We broke Micheal free of Kazimir's control. If I can free Plague there's a chance he'd help us take down Kazimir.

Duck!

Jessie dropped himself to the ground just as a tendril shattered the rail behind him. Jessie watched as the frayed metal fell down onto a platform below, clattering next to what seemed to be the biggest array of machines he had ever seen. In the middle of it all a restrained Mia struggled against her binds.

"Mia!" Jessie cried out as he peered through the holes in the metal floor.

"Should you really be taking your eyes off me right now!" Plague said angrily.

A large tendril wrapped itself around Jessie's ankle before dragging him into the air. He dangled helplessly before being flung into another set of rails, toppling over the edge. He desperately reached out grabbing hold of the catwalk just before he fell to the platform below.

"Besides she can't hear you anyways." Plague said as he approached slowly.

"What are you doing to her!" Jessie asked as he pulled himself over the edge onto the catwalk.

"Kazimir needs her to be distressed in order for her powers to trigger, he figured that pain would be the easiest way to reach that goal." Plague replied. "But enough about her, this fight is about us."

The temperature dropped as a barrage of tendrils shot toward Jessie at incredible speeds. He held up his arms as the smoky limbs bashed him repeatedly, waves of pain washed over him as he struggled against the force of the attack. His right forearm shattered against the force of the attack and he cried out in pain.

As the barrage ended Jessie stood panting as he struggled to stand upright, his legs shook under the weight of his body. He felt Plague's smug gaze as he flooded his body with smoke trying to fix the damage he had done to him. Bones snapped back into place as he healed himself.

"Don't tell me all you can do is heal yourself? You? The perfect lifeform reduced to a sniveling child." Plague said as he swung his fist, narrowingly missing a defending Jessie.

"You can't be that much older than me man, cool it with this child crap." Jessie said as he pulled the blade at his hip free from its sheathe.

The blade's tip fell to the ground as Jessie struggled against the weight. Plagued laughed as Jessie shakily held up the blade, pointing it directly at him.

"Why even carry that old thing if you can't even lift it?" Plague said pushing the tip of the blade away from him.

"A friend of mine gave this to me." Jessie replied.

"He shouldn't have."

Suddenly rushing in underneath Jessie's defenses, Plague planted his fist directly into Jessie's ribs shattering them and flinging him back against the handrail. The sheer force of the blow knocked the wind from Jessie, as he heaved he watched Plague sprinting toward him.

You won't survive if you continue to take attacks head-on!

I'm not strong enough to beat him L! He's been throwing me around like a ragdoll this whole time.

Then be smarter! Use the environment and what you have to your advantage!

Putting away his blade he bumped into the handrail behind him.

That is a bad idea Jessie.

Dodging underneath Plague's next strike Jessie stepped back falling over the handrail behind him.

This was a dumb idea!

Quickly summoning his own tendril Jessied wrapped around Plague's neck dragging him down with him. As they tumbled towards the ground below Jessie pulled Plague in closer until they were face to face.

"What the hell are you doing!" Plague cried out just before crashing down onto the pavement below.

Jessie landed on top of Plague's body breaking more bones in the process, he gasped as he felt a rib pierce his lung. He struggled against the mess of limbs that remained of Plague before settling onto the cold concrete. Unable to focus his mind he poured too much smoke into his body healing himself haphazardly, as his arm reattached itself he screamed in pain.

The searing cold spread through his person in its entirety, fixing every wound and shattered bone. His rib freed itself from his lung and he heaved in a refreshing breath of fresh air as the final bone popped back into place.

"I'm never doing that again." He said softly as he rested against the cold stone floor.

A sudden warmth wrapped itself around his right arm as the pool of blood that was Plague grew. Sighing Jessie pushed his sore body from the ground careful not to put pressure on his newly reattached arm. He stared down at Plague's corpse grimly as the corpse began to shake.

"Of course." Jessie said as he stepped back from the regenerating body.

"Jessie!" A voice beside him cried out.

"Mia?"

Jessie rushed to the sound of Mia's voice pushing past old machinery and cables. The size of the room made his head spin, taking a look around him he could see an empty expanse with the area around him holding the only signs of life. The room resembled old hangars he had seen in movies, the kind that held planes and cars.

"Mia where are you?!" he cried out as he climbed on top of a dusty table. He looked around desperate for any sign of her. Through the mess of machinery and old furniture, he saw a struggling Mia to his right.

"Jessie please get me out of here!" Mia cried out as she spotted him from her chair. Several straps held her small frame in place, and connected to the chair was a large machine.

Sirens blared suddenly as the machine began to hum softly, blue lights shined a bright light into the dark room nearly blinding Jessie.

"Hurry!" Mia said peering at Jessie with terrified eyes.

Before getting a chance to reply a sharp pain unlike one he had ever felt before pierced his back leg, sending him to his knees. Turning around he caught Plague's fist to his face sending a stream of blood down his nose. The knockback from the punch sent fierce jolts of pain up his legs, finally cathing a glimpse he recoiled at the sight of Akita's sword in his calf.

"You left this behind." Plague said grabbing Jessie by his ruined shirt.

Rearing back his fist Plague smiled before he began to pummel a struggling Jessie. Blow after blow against his face left Jessie disoriented, he stared up at his attacker unable to collect enough focus to fight back.

"I've waited years to get this chance and I've got to be honest Jessie. I'm very disappointed in you." Plague said dropping a limp Jessie to the ground.

Jessie cried out in pain weakly as Plague wrenched the blade free from his leg, blood poured from the wound covering Jessie in a warm pool of his own blood.

"Any last words prodigal son."

Plague hung the blade over Jessie's neck ready to sever his throat at a moment's notice.

He stared up at the Plague past the blade with blurry eyes, his vision disoriented from the pain.

This is it huh?

If an icon is killed by an equal then that Icon remains in the void after death.

God this sucks, I never even got to a concert, graduate, or even kiss a girl.

If you say my name I can promise you will do all that and more.

His face was sore and throbbing in pain, his leg bled fiercely leaving him immobile for as long as he didn't heal it. For a moment Jessie did consider saying his name, for a brief moment the word rested on his lips. Before the first syllable crossed his lips a shining ball of flames crashed into Plague singeing the left side of his face.

He struggled to put out the flames consuming him, dropping the blade beside Jessie. Confused Jessie seized this opportunity to focus. As he struggled to gather his remaining smoke he watched in awe as volley after volley of fire consumed Plague. Taking a wrong step backwards he fell from the table knocking it and Jessie to the ground.

"Someone get to Jessie! We have Plague covered." Rose cried out as she let loose another ball of flame.

The sound of boots running toward him caught Jessie's attention, he turned to see Travis running toward him in a full sprint. As he arrived Travis took hold of Jessie pulling him from the ground into his arms.

"Jessie, come on stay with me, man! Can't have you dying on me right now, we need you." Travis said as he patted Jessie's cheek.

"How did you guys get down here? " Jessie asked as he poured his gathered smoke into his wounds. He felt the hole in his leg close leaving only an aching feeling behind.

"We took the elevator." Travis replied visibly disgusted at the sight of Jessie healing his own leg.

"No I mean how did you get past Kazimir?" He asked as he massaged his sore face.

A sudden blue light lit up the room, followed shortly by a thundering boom.

"Is that Lucas?" Jessie asked surprised.

"Yeah, the whole gang is here." Travis said as he pulled Jessie to his feet.

As he applied pressure to his leg, Jessie winced, instinctively placing his hand over his calf. As he looked down at his leg he noticed and picked up his gifted blade, placing it into its sheathe at his side.

"How is everyone here? I thought they locked them up?"

"It's because of him." Travis said as he pointed past Jessie.

Turning toward where Travis pointed, a smile spread across his face. There on top of a cabinet stood a scaly man shooting a stream of acidic spit at an unseen enemy.

"I had a good feeling about that guy." Jessie said.

"Yeah I still have my reservations about him but I will say, he pulled through for us." Travis said.

"He followed us right after he noticed all of Plague's guys in town heading right for us. He felt bad for leaving us alone."

A sudden drop in temperature made Jessie's skin crawl, he could see his breath as a loud screeching filled the hangar in its entirety. The noise was guttural and familiar, one he had made himself.

"Plague is starting to get angry, that sound only means he's at his tipping point." Jessie said as he started to climb onto a cabinet beside them.

Venom gave him a nod as he reached the top before jumping off towards where the battle took place. The sight before Jessie left him speechless cascades of light, fire, and rage all directed toward one man. One man held his own against it all as he moved quickly and carefully through it all. With one fluid motion Plague dispatched seven of Toby's clones leaving the original scrambling back for cover.

We can't beat him, can we?

He is highly skilled and more versed in utilizing his smoke. Your odds are slim at best.

Turning towards where he last saw Mia, Jessie was filled with a strange feeling. One he had only felt for his brother and friends.

We have to protect her, no matter what.

"Travis this doesn't look like it's going our way, I need you to promise me you'll get out of here with Mia." Jessie said feeling his anxiety grow.

"Don't be crazy Cruz, I'm not leaving you guys behind." Travis said annoyed.

"Travis you're the only one of us who can sneak Mia out, none of us can do it. It has to be you."

"If we all rush him we can take him!" Travis argued.

"I dropped him from the sky Travis! That wasn't enough to put him down, I'm not sure any of us can." Jessie said as he climbed down to the ground.

"But-"

"If Mia dies then all of this was for nothing! Please Travis...only you can do this." Jessie said grabbing hold of his friend's shoulders.

He could see his friend struggle with his thoughts, wrestling with his desires over what he knew was right. With an exasperated sigh, Travis pushed Jessie's hands from his shoulder.

"Make sure Rose stays safe, got it? I won't forgive you if she gets hurt."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dodging through old office furniture and machinery Jessie sprinted his way closer to the growing sounds of battle. Another flash of light followed by thunder disoriented Jessie as he ran past a stray copier.

Lucas has got to be near his limit. He can't hold on much longer.

Pushing past a fax machine and jumping over a desk he saw burning piles of what used to be furniture littering the ground. A loud screeching unlike the one before caused Jessie to fall to his knees clutching his ears, he screamed unable to hear his own voice as the noise rang loud in true. Just as suddenly as it came it went allowing Jessie to wipe away the drool that had collected in the corner of his lip.

I-I'm getting close, that was Sarah, no way I could forget that noise.

As if to confirm his thoughts a sudden crash beside him sent large chunks of wood and splinters toward him as Toby laid in what used to be a desk. Rushing to his aid, Jessie winced as he saw him covered in small wounds with one of his fingers bending the wrong way. Toby's head lolled to one side before he passed out lying in the rubble.

"THERE YOU ARE!" A voice said from the direction Toby had flown from.

Plague stood sending the most intense look of hatred at Jessie before breaking into a full sprint toward him. Before Jessie could react a desk connected with Plague's body sending him across the room.

"About time you showed up!" Lily said as she stretched into view. She shrunk her hand and Jessie figured it was her who had launched the desk at Plague.

"We really need the help, he's already knocked Venom to the ground and Lucas is on his last legs." She said desperation in her voice.

"I think he just knocked out Toby too, I think he'll be fine but his hand is fucked up." Jessie said as he checked his pulse.

Still beating, good. I can't have anyone else dying on me.

Another sudden drop in temperature and almost instinctively Jessie formed a tendril wrapping it around Lily's ankle before dragging her toward him. Just as her body fell to the ground the desk she had thrown earlier came flying at her narrowly missing her before crashing against a machine behind her. Both the desk and machine exploded as the two collided.

Releasing his hold on her foot she stared back at the flames before turning to face Jessie.

"Thanks for the save Loverboy. Tag me in I'll get Toby somewhere safe." She said as she slapped his free hand.

Before he could react she stretched away dragging behind her an unconscious Toby. He sighed as he stood up wiping off the stray wood on his clothes.

"You think yourself some kind of hero? Huh? It doesn't matter if you saved her this time Jessie, I'm going to kill you and every one of these pieces of Chosen shit!" Plague cried out as he suddenly appeared beside him.

He brought down his fist just as Jessie pulled free his blade catching it between his knuckles and cutting his arm down the middle. The feeling as the blade tore through skin, muscle, and bone sickened Jessie deeply to the point he felt himself heave. Then came the cascade of blood pouring over him as Plague stepped back roaring in pain, the sickening warm feeling enveloped him as he stared at the bloodstained blade in his hand.

"I-I'm sorry I didn't mean to." Jessie said as the blade clattered to the ground.

A wailing Plague suddenly stared down Jessie as he forcefully healed his mangled hand, the muscles clung to each other as they desperately tried to reform what used to be there.

"You're sorry? YOU'RE SORRY!" Plague roared as he propelled himself into the air using a newly formed black tendril at his feet.

Forming a new one in his left hand it was clear his intention was to strike down Jessie, but right as he reached the apex of his jump a bolt of lighting caught him in the chest sending him flying.

"Bullseye.." Lucas said before collapsing to his knees.
