Chapter 42

Pulling the shirt he had stolen over himself Jessie sighed at the onlookers staring curiously at him.

"Guys you got to stop staring, its weird for me too please don't make this harder." Jessie said as he buttoned up the shirt.

"Sorry it's just...hearing about it is one thing but actually seeing you come back was...something else." Lily said as she poked his stomach.

The wound from the steel beam had already healed leaving nothing behind to suggest he had even been hurt. Jessie brushed his hair behind his ears and stared at the others.

"The fact that not even a scar is left behind is the weirdest part." Travis said as he lifted up Jessie's shirt.

"Stop that!" Jessie said as he fixed his shirt back into place .

"The only notable change is his hair, which by the way grows every time he...well dies." Lily said picking up a lock of Jessie's new hair.

A chill washed over Jessie as L appeared on his shoulder once again.

"If the smoke returns Jessie to us with his hair grown than it is by the smokes choice. There is no way to know why or even a reason to care. The most important thing now is for Jessie to say my name." L said annoyed.

"I'm never going to feed you chorizo again if you keep bugging me about your name L." Jessie said as he brushed him off his shoulder. He watched as L flew to the railing above them.

"This is no longer about petty reasons Icon, this now concerns something that is greater than us." He squawked.

"What are you talking about?" Lily asked stretching towards him.

"There is something in this dungeon that radiates an energy that I do not like, one that is too familiar. I don't trust in your ability to handle this so for the sake of saving us I need you to say my name."

"We already know about Plague, and I can handle him. Now that I'm full of smoke again our rematch should have the same outcome." Jessie said as he rolled up his sleeves. "I know you're worried L but I'm strong enough to handle him now."

"Besides he's not alone, we're gonna be right next to him when it happens." Toby said clasping his hand on Jessie's shoulder. "Plus you're giving off really creepy vibes so I'd prefer if we didn't have to rely on you to save us."

"If you run out of smoke again are you just going to kill yourself in hopes of rejuvenating?" L said ignoring the others words.

"It won't come to that." Jessie said annoyed "You know for someone who claims to care for my wellbeing you show it in odd ways, you don't even have any faith in me."

"You warned me to run and hide when Animal attacked instead of trusting me to be able to handle her. I was the one to bring her down, I think its time you start showing me some trust."

"What of the swordsman then. Hmmm? Do you think he would call that battle a victory?" L said looking down at Jessie in contempt.

"Are you talking about Akita? Are you shit talking MY husband!" Toby said suddenly furious.

"I have no intention of speaking ill of the dead, nor do I believe he deserves ridicule but the fact of the matter is if I had been listened to he would still be alive. I am asking you to make the right decision and let me help you." With his final word L became a puff a smoke and returned himself to Jessie leaving the others stunned.

"I'm going to kill your bird Jessie." Toby said annoyed.

The expression on his face left Jessie feeling sad for his new friend.

"He's not my bird, I don't event know who or what he is." Jessie said lowering his gaze.

"We don't really have time to be arguing about this." Lily said placing herself between the two men. "In case you two forgot, we are miles underground and separated from the only people who's on our side."

"She's right, we don't have time to worry about what L says. We have to find Lucas and the others." Jessie said meeting Toby's gaze.

A moment of tense silence left Jessie uncomfortable as Toby returned his gaze with his own icy stare.

"Just make sure to keep my husbands name out of that things mouth and we'll be fine." He said after a grueling few seconds.

"Great than its settled, show us the way map man." Lily said with a nervous smile.

God it's so awkward now.

How so?

I'd like you to shut up for like five minutes please.

Jessie felt his ruined pants searching for his device when he felt his heart drop. As he reached into his pocket and pulled out the remains of a charred phone he let out a disappointed sigh.

"The fire broke the damn phone, its nothing but melted scrap at this point." Jessie said as he studied the melted brick of plastic and metal in his hand.

"Great how are we supposed to find our way around now! It's like a Goddamn maze down here!" Toby said throwing up his hands in the air.

"I can take you to where you need to go, but you have to promise to be nice to me." A voice from above said with a dry laugh.

Jessies eyes met the man above and his blood boiled. There atop the ruins of the catwalk stood the object of his hate, a reminder to his brother. His straight jacket now undone his long arms wrapped around the railing as he stared down with his sickening black eyes.

"I saw what you did to poor Starkiller and would hate to end up like that gnome. You're a real scary guy Jessie and I'd hate to get on your bad side." Kazimir said as his laughter grew in volume.

As he heaved in laughter the bells on the ends of his hair rang in an almost musical way.

"Who the fuck is this rodeo clown?" Toby asked throwing up an accusatory finger at Kazimir.

"Tough talk coming from a man with more makeup than an actual rodeo clown. News flash Gene Simmons, punk's dead." Kazimir said as he hoisted himself over the railing.

He landed on the ground with such force a cloud of dust covered the area around him.

"I'm Kazimir you sad fuck, and I'm the guy trying to help you out." he said as he stared down at Toby.

The sudden tension between the two left Jessie in even.

Of course this guy shows up.

"Why would I accept help from you? Nothing you could give me would be enough for me to forgive you." Jessie said coldly. He could feel himself getting riled up just from looking at the Seven foot jester.

"Well let's not say nothing, I'm sure the one thing you want the most would be enough to get your smoky ass to follow me." He said with a snicker. He covered his mouth in a mock attempt to hide his laughter.

Calm yourself Jessie. This man is more than he appears to be, I'd advise caution with this one.

Didn't I tell you to shut up?

"Helloooooo? Earth to abandonment issues?" Kazimir said as he waved his hand in Jessie's face.

"I never even saw him move..." Lily said as the color drained form her face.

"How did you get over here so fast?" Jessie asked as he took a step back.

"Does that really matter right now? Don't you wanna know what I have to offer you instead, God you can be so boring for such an interesting guy." Kazimir said as he suddenly sat down on the ground.

Jessie turned to the others wondering if he was the only one disturbed by Kazimir. One look told him he was not alone.

"Well? I'm starting to get bored waiting." Kazimir said as he flicked a stray piece on concrete away.

Lily shrugged at Jessie and he sighed.

"No I don't want or need your help you sick freak. The only help you could give me is dying." Jessie said spitting on the ground beside Kazimir.

"Oh you disappoint me smoky, I figured you'd at least want to hear me out on where to find your brother, but if that's what you want I guess I'll respect it." Kazimir said as he lifted himself from the ground.

"W-what did you just say?" Jessie said as he grabbed Kazimir by his straightjacket.

His face twisted into a sickening smile as he looked down at Jessie. Pure joy written on his face as he stooped down to meet Jessie's eyes.

"You didn't think he was dead did you?" he said with a chuckle.

"I saw you kill him Kazimir, I was there the night of the fire!" Jessie cried out.

"Ah you saw me light a fire, never the act of murder. I assure you he's here, and he wants to have a word."

It infuriated Jessie to see this monster grin so widely at him, he could feel his grip tighten around Kazimir.

"No you're lying! He's dead and gone!"

"Do you even remember there being a funereal Jessie? Did you ever see a body? Did you even get a little jar of brother to hold and love forever?" Kazimir said with a laugh.

Jessie raised his fist ready to strike but stopped short as he watched Kazimir's hair stand on end. Jessie scoffed as he lowered his hands letting go of Kazimir.

"Jessie.." Lily said.

Jessie turned to face her and saw the concern in her eyes.

"Was there a funeral?" she asked timidly.

Of course there was, I'm sure there was. God why can't I remember being at his funeral? Was he even buried?

"I saw you there Kazimir, I saw his door on fire!" Jessie said suddenly reeling from the realization.

"And yet he lives, now do you really want to stand here and argue with the clown or go see your dear brother." Kazimir said as he strode past a stunned Jessie.

The heavy footsteps Jared Jessie bring him back to his new reality. He turned to see a beckoning hand reaching out for him to join.

"I don't think this is a good idea Jessie. He has no concrete proof. After that night you said you got sick right? Who's to say it didn't happen while you were under?" Toby said concerned. "I say we take this guy down now and find the others ourselves."

Jessie struggled to find a flaw in Toby's words but could feel himself struggling to agree.

I need to know if he's alive, even if it means trusting this monster.

"If there's a chance my brothers alive I need to take it, I'm sure you can understand." Jessie said as he turned to Kazimir.

"Smart move Jessie, especially considering you know exactly what it feels like to be under my gaze." Kazimir said with a toothy grin.

Recalling one of the most painful moments of his life wasn't something Jessie relished, if anything his hatred for Kazimir grew.

"He has a point Toby, this guy is probably the strongest henchman Plague has. Lily can attest to that, if we fought without everyone here he'd have killed us." Jessie said.

The words felt painful to say, to sing any praise to Kazimir felt vile.

There is no shame in admitting an opponent's strength, the only dishonor is ignoring it.

I'll try to focus on that, anything to help me deal with him.

"Oh stop you're gonna make me blush." Kazimir said as he continued down one of the many corridors that surrounded them.

"So we're just following the super evil clown guy? Great, just perfect. Lucas is gonna kill me." Toby said as jogged to catch up to Jessie.

Jessie turned to see Lily standing hesitant to follow behind.

"Don't worry about a thing Lily, you have us." Jessie said as he raised his hand to her.

"What's the worst that could happen?"
