Chapter 40

Travis grabbed his side as he slowly rose from the ground. Dazed he looked at the massive hole before him feeling uneasy. The large clearing that was once there was replaced by an unending abyss.

"What the hell happened?" He asked confused.

"The floor must have collapsed after Jessie dragged Animal out of the sky." Lucas said as he appeared by Travis' side. He sported brand new bruises and cuts across his hands.

"Jessie! He must have fallen down with her!" Travis cried out as he ran to the craters edge.

Feeling uneasy as he looked over the edge he carefully scanned the hole. He cursed as he was met with a completely dark abyss.

"Jessie! Jessie can you hear me!" Travis screamed into the pit.

Fear took hold as silence answered him.

"Dammit Cruz answer me!" He said punching the ground beneath him.

"We need to do a headcount to see who else is missing." Lucas said as he bent down beside Travis.

"Has anyone seen Toby?!" A panicked Sarah asked as she appeared from behind an overturned tree.

As her gaze turned towards the hole the color in her face drained.

"Don't tell me." She said as she stepped slowly towards them.

"Where's Rose?" Travis asked his fear now rising to an all new high.

"Rose!" He cried out standing back up.

"I'm over here!" Rose replied drawing everyone's attention to the top of one of the nearby trees. "I figured this might be the best place to stay safe...and now I can't get down." She said sheepishly.

Travis chuckled to himself as he raced over to help Rose down.

"Has anyone seen Lily or Akita?" Lucas asked worriedly.

"They were the closest ones to animal when the floor gave out. I think they fell down with Jessie." Rose said as she let go of a blushing Travis' hand.

"What are we supposed to do now? This wasn't how this was supposed to go down!" Sarah yelled.

"There's nothing we can do but keep moving. We blew a huge hole into Plagues base and I doubt it went unnoticed." Lucas said solemnly.

"What about Jessie and the others? We can't just leave them? We don't even know if they're alive..." Travis asked confused.

"We have to act based on the assumption they're alive, we can't just assume they're dead. I know for a fact that both Toby and Akita won't let any harm come to those two." Lucas replied placing his hand on Travis' shoulder.

"No I can't accept that! We have to do something to help them!" Travis said as he knocked away Lucas' hand.

"Yeah we don't want to abandon the others!" Rose said annoyed.

"Hey settle down!" Sarah yelled smacking the back of Travis head.

"Hey!"

"Now you listen here you little punks, if Lucas says move forward, we move forward!" Sarah said exasperated. "As much as I hate to say it, Toby is pretty reliable. We can count on him to play his part and take care of everyone."

Travis could see she was scared herself, the way she glanced back at the hole left him feeling guilty.

"Fine, but I'm gonna hold you personally responsible if anything happens to them." Travis said rubbing the back of his head.

"Oh are you, who cares. It's not just your friends who fell down there kid. Get some perspective." She said scoffing at Travis.

Feeling his face flush Travis tried to reply but was caught off as Lucas placed his hand on his shoulder once again.

"We're all worried kid, let's just try and remain civil until this is all over. Where are we headed next?" He asked trying his best to defuse the situation.

Travis mumbled to himself as he pulled his stolen phone from his pocket. He scrolled through the applications and eventually pulled out the map. He studied it closely careful to not cut himself on its newly broken screen.

"As far I can tell if we continue down this path then we should be...wow we're actually really close." Travis said surprised. "Looks like we won't have to walk that long before we're in these 'Holding Cells'." He said with airquotes.

"Lead the way mapman." Sarah said.

"It's this way." Travis said pointing towards the edge of the clearing.

Feeling a hole as wide as the one they were leaving behind in his chest, Travis moved on shortly followed by the rest. Walking back into the forest he ducked under branches and stepped over exposed roots as he lead the way towards forward.

Cruz I swear if you die I'll never forgive you for leaving us behind.

Travis thought as he stared down at the broken screen in his hand. He felt his nails digging into the palm of his free hand as he tightly clenched his fist. His anxiety left his mind wandering as they did past the trees and wildlife. Suddenly he could feel a tender hand wrap itself around his clenched fist. His eyes darted upward to see a weak smile on Rose's face.

"It's gonna be ok Travis, Jessie can handle himself." She said as she slowly unclenched his fist. "He's always been there for us so it's only right we have faith in him."

"That was before Rose, when our biggest problem was that prick Patrick or who to bring to the dance. This is only supposed to happen in comics, we're not supposed to fight giant prehistoric monster birds." Travis replied finding it hard to meet her gaze. He rubbed the ring on his finger, a nervous tick he's had since he first put it on.

"Who was the one to take down that bird Travis?" Rose asked tilting her head to meet his eyes.

"It was really a group effort to be honest." He said pointing towards Sarah.

"Ok well who pulled that thing out of the air and finished it smart guy?" She said poking his chest.

"It was Jessie."

"Jessie is now a lot stronger than he was before Travis, he can handle this. Besides he's got Toby and Lily, he's not without backup."

Travis sighed as he trudged on. He didn't reply unable to find the energy to argue anymore. He stared out at the seemingly endless trees finding it harder for him to give his signature smile.

He looked up at Rose and beamed as he let go of her hand giving a thumbs up.

"Thanks Rose I feel a lot better now." He lied through his teeth. His heart ached as he watched her return his fake smile with the brightest damn thing he'd ever seen.

"Hey short stuff, is that what we're looking for?" Sarah said as she pointed past the tree line.

Travis looked to where she was pointing only to see a sheer rock wall. In between a particular craggy surface stood a door.

"We open that up and there's gonna be a cannon aimed by a bunny on the other side." Travis said as he looked down at the map.

"I was just about to make that joke." Rose said as she stepped closer. She stopped just short of opening the door and turned back to face the others.

"I know Travis was making a joke about it but after everything that's happened I feel a bit nervous. What if there is someone waiting for us inside?"

"Only one way to find out." Sarah said as she moved past Rose and threw open the door.

Rose jumped back almost tripping on her own feet. Her eyes widened in shock as she watched Sarah snicker.

"Chicken shit." Sarah laughed as she strode proudly into the room ahead. Embarrassed by her reaction Rose's face flushed, she straightened herself up trying hard to seem tough.

"I've almost died like three times this week, forgive me for being a little jumpy." She said as her face flushed.

Travis gave a sheepish smile as he walked past her into the room ahead. He could feel her burning gaze as he stifled laughter. Shaking off the brief smile he turned his attention to the room taking in all he felt was important. The first thing he noticed was just how incredibly stale the air that hung around him was. The next was just how incredibly organized the workspace was.

He studied the charts and boards that hung on the walls unable to make sense of any of their writings. The tables, chairs and were a bright white, an odd familiarity washed over him as he remembered his school's science rooms.

"Anyone getting a weird sense of deja vú right now." Lucas asked as he walked slowly past Travis.

"This room reminds me of Ms. Piper's science class Travis." Rose said as she tentatively poked a Bunsen burner.

"With the amount of science equipment lying around I'm starting to think that is exactly what this room is." Lucas said as he picked up a microscope. A large cloud of dust fell from the microscope sending Lucas into a coughing fit.

"With this much dust in the room I don't think it's been used for a long time." He said in between hacking coughs.

Travis ran a finger across the surface of the nearest table only to see it covered in a thick layer of dust.

That explains the air.

"Guys I got a door here." Sarah said as she unholstered her firearm.

Travis turned to see a wooden door with a small glass window in the center.

He gulped as he headed towards her navigating through the hedge like maze of tables. He turned to see the same worried look he had look back at him as Rose followed close by. For as tough as that girl was she had always been a bit of a coward when it came to horror films.

I guess these last three days have been a real thriller huh.

Before he could gather his thoughts Sarah planted her foot through the door shocking Travis back to reality. Her chosen enhanced strength made short work of the door as it slammed violently open making her armed entry all the easier. She checked every corner meticulously scanning the room before nodding for the others to join her.

Travis entered first stepping over shattered wood as he did. He looked to the door to see the glass shattered and a small rectangle of lighter colored wood beneath it.

"This must have been someone's office." Sarah said turning back to face Travis.

"What makes you say that?" Rose said as she carefully walked over the wood shards.

"The doors missing a nameplate right here." Sarah said tapping her gun against the lighter colored section of the door. "Plus there's a desk and computer right in front of me."

"You've cracked the case Sherlock." Lucas said jokingly as he moved past her.

Seeing the instant annoyance on Sarah's face Travis moved past them desperate not to get involved with what followed next. As a force of habit Travis immediately jumped into the seat behind the desk sending a cloud of dust around him. Almost instantly he disappeared from view, intangible falling through the seat. Pins and needles shot through his body as he sat stunned on the floor.

Did my body just try to dodge dust? Dust?! I got to get a better handle of this before I end up looking like a bigger idiot.

"Travis?" Rose said as she swatted away dust from her person.

Feeling embarrassed he shot up and reappeared in the seat beside him.

"I didn't want to start coughing so I disappeared before I could get hit." He said as he tried not to meet her gaze.

"You did it by accident didn't you? Did you fall out of the chair too?" She asked almost happy at the idea.

"No..." he said as he absentmindedly tapped keys on the keyboard desperate for it to turn on.

"It works better if you actually turn it on." Lucas said as he pressed the power button on the PC beneath the desk.

Travis gave an embarrassed smile as the screen in front of him nearly blinded him as it came to life. A monotone jingle played as a logo bounced into frame.

United Together. Corpo trash.

A few seconds passed and a new screen graced his eyes.

"Shit, we're gonna need a password." Travis annoyed.

"Oh oh try password!" Sarah said excitedly.

"I doubt a mega million dollar corporation is gonna let one of their computers password be the word 'password'." Travis scoffed flabbergasted at the idea.

"Let her finish." Lucas said almost amused.

Travis sighed as he turned to face a smug Sarah.

"Password...backwards." She said gliding her arms proudly.

"There is no way on God's green earth that it's 'password' backwards." Travis said in bewilderment.

"Oh yeah, if you're so sure why not put some money on it ghost boy." She said as she dramatically picked at her nails.

"Do we really have time to be doing this?" Rose asked.

As if to answer Travis slammed a fresh twenty dollar bill onto the desk kicking up a new cloud of dust.

"Pony up megaphone." He said never breaking eye contact.

Returning the favor sarah excitedly matched Travis placing her own twenty onto the desk.

"I always forget how stubborn you can be Travis." Rose said as she looked down in annoyance at Travis cracking his knuckles.

Travis typed feeling his mood improve.

Easiest money I've ever ma-

"No fucking way." Travis said as the computer gave a happy chime.

"Easiest money I've ever made." Sarah said as she picked up her prize with a dramatic flourish. She extended her hand to Lucas and sealed her victory with a crisp high five.

As Travis lamented his loss a cascade of screens behind them flashed on. Travis turned to see a multitude of angles and rooms displayed on the screen. On one he could see himself and the others watching those very screens.

"What the hell is this?" Lucas asked as he pointed towards the wall.

"They've got eyes everywhere. They've probably known we were here from the moment we entered the elevator." Said said her face pale.

Travis turned to see the screen she was watching showed the room where they had left the unconscious soldiers tied up.

"They have a camera showing the fucking hole where Toby and the others fell down." Sarah said staring at another screen.

Turning to face it only confirmed her words.

We never had the element of surprise.

Turning his attention back towards the computer Travis searched through files and programs as the others watched the screens.

"Woah woah whatever you did rewinded the tapes Travis. Do it again." Lucas said patting his shoulder.

Travises opened up the program he had closed prior to see a board of commands. A few clicks and he was able to see he was able to pick specific cameras. He hit what seemed like the right button on the right camera and turned around to see his handiwork.

He watched as the group ran onto a field followed shortly by what looked like a prehistoric monster.

I hope that lady got what was coming to her.

They all watched in silence as a battle they had all lived through only moments ago played on screen. Travis felt his blade run cold as he saw Akita once again have a talon run through his chest. He could feel the anger boiling from Sarah beside him. The screens flickered slightly as the air around them seemed to feel denser. He turned to see Lucas face contorted in a pained look.

"This is the part where she tries to get away." Rose said as she pointed to a struggling Animal.

Travis watched as his best friend struggled to bring down the monster. The camera capturing every detail of his pained and angry face as he dragged her out of the sky. His drained and hollow look in his eyes as the ground beneath him swallowed him up whole.

Travis paused the video feed with a single click feeling an intense need to rub his ring.

"We've been playing into their hands this whole time. That damn lizard fuck sent us right into a trap." Travis said as he slammed his hands into the desk.

The keyboard rattled and fell to the floor sending a series of commands to the video feeds. Almost every screen shut off leaving only one still illuminating the room. The group watched as the screen showed a sheer cliff side.

A harsh shimmer distorted the screen slightly making it hard for Travis to make out exactly what was happening.

"Oh great you broke the damn thing!" Sarah said as she angrily picked up the keyboard.

Unable to take his eyes off the screen Travis watched as a door appeared right as the distortion ended. He rubbed his ring finger as he watched as him and the others appeared shortly after. He watched Sarah open the door and Rose jump back.

"Someone let us in." He said right as a crackling bolt of lightning graveled out the screen. A shower of sparks and glass showered the group.
