Chapter 38: Starkiller

"Why cant I ever be friends with a girl that doesn't hit me." Jessie said as he walked down the hallway. He held his side feeling the pain grow as time went on.

"When this is all over I should give Sam a chance, at least she wont punch me."

His breathing became strained the farther he walked, slowing his pursuit of Lily. He rested his hand against the wall beside him as he made his way, the cold stone walls felt smooth against his palm. It helped keep him grounded as he made his way farther down the hall.

Wincing he looked down to see his hands coated in a thick red, making him feel nauseas.

"Lily!" Jessie cried out.

Silence answered him and he sighed.

"Lily I'm sorry for being an ass!"

Again his only answer was the silence that followed.

"Dammit Lily I said I was sorry!" Jessie said as his frustration boiled.

A voice in the distance stopped Jessie in his tracks as he strained to listen. Only able to hear his own ragged breathing he continued on, hesitant to call out.

I'm getting a bad feeling L.

He stopped again suddenly uneasy when he didn't hear a response.

L? You there?

A sudden Explosion of light as the end of the hall followed by a scream brought Jessie crashing back down to reality.

"Lily!" he cried out as he ran as fast as he could. The rebar jostled around as he ran slowing him down as he made his way closer towards the light.

"Lily answer me!" He cried out once more.

Another flash of light blinded Jessie momentarily causing him to stumble against the wall beside him. His breathing quickened as the pain in his side became unbearable, he grasped his side as blood steadily poured. He looked up towards the end of the hall to see a dark open room, two Silhouettes were visible but Jessie couldn't make out who they were.

"Jessie!" A voice cried out from beyond the hall.

"Lily just hold on!" Jessie answered.

He pushed himself off the wall with difficulty hearing the sword at his hip scrape against it. He walked as fast as he could desperately trying to make his way towards the room.

Towards Lily.

He gasped for air feeling his strength pour out from his side, his blood soiled his clothes. Another flash of light revealed the inside of the room, and just who was inside. It was for a moment but he could see a black cloak, it brandished Plague's symbol on the arm.

As he entered the room he could feel an intense heat wave wash over him, it was overwhelming as it took hold of the entire room. The sound of a fight beside him caused him to see the two silhouettes trading blows, one was significantly longer than the other.

"Lily!" Jessie cried out in the darkness.

He watched as the longer silhouette launched one of its arms towards the other catching it square in the chest.

"He's chosen Jessie! Step back!" Lily cried out.

A sudden burst of light and heat blinded them both, leaving Jessie blind as a heavy blow across his face left him sprawled out on the floor. He grabbed the side of his face and screamed as an intense searing pain sent alarms ringing in his head.

"Oooooh that looks like it really hurts." A voice sneered above Jessie.

He struggled to open his eye and winced as he tried to sit up.

"Alright I'm bored with this game, someone hit the lights!" The voice said into the darkness.

A sudden white light filled the room causing Jessie to blink as his eyes adjusted. As his vision improved his heart sank as he looked around the now brightly lit room.

The room itself was nothing special, just a meager storeroom by Jessie's perspective. Crates and boxes adorned the room filling in the empty space. What was really interesting about the room was the armed soldiers looking down on them from catwalks above them.

"Holy shit." Lily said.

"Holy shit indeed girly, now that we're all aware you're screwed both of you are why don't you both make this easy for us all us and just give up." The man standing above Jessie said in a condescending tone.

He wasn't a particularly tall man but he did make up for it in terms of muscle. A hulking brute with fists to match stared down at Jessie almost daring him to stand back up, to not make it easy for them. His brown eyes matched his hair and the only thing Jessie could see in them was excitement.

He rubbed his beard and turned his attention towards Lily positioning himself between her and Jessie.

"Or we could make this interesting." He said winking at Lily.

A look of confusion and disgust on her face caused him to laugh, a deep hearty laugh.

"Nothing like that little lady, though I wouldn't be opposed to that either." He said wiping away tears from his eyes.

"I'm a minor old man, besides I prefer taller men." Lily said raising her hand above her hand.

A snicker from the catwalks drew the man's attention, and his demeanor changed. He shifted his shoulders and sighed.

"Such a shame, considering I'm a real patient guy once you get to know me. Patient enough to ask you both again, the easy way or the hard way?" He said cracking his knuckles.

"Is this some attempt to be intimidating, because honestly you seem right out a cheap 80's movie." Lily said staring him down.

I gotta remember to stay on her good side.

Flustered the man stared at her then to Jessie. A sudden look of realization came across his face.

"How old are you kids?" He asked confused.

"I'm 16 and the guy who's face you barbecued is 17. Are we gonna keep asking useless questions or are you gonna attack us? Be a man!" Lily said throwing her hands in the air in exasperation.

Why is she provoking him? Doesn't she realize the situation we're in right now?

He winced as he turned to face her, his face felt like putty in his hand leaving him feeling nauseous. Through his burnt eye he saw he her eyes dart to her left. Confused for a moment he turned to see the soldiers above them. There seemed to be more than there was before, and a few of them wore a familiar black nail polish.

Toby?! How, when?

"I'm as man as they come baby, don't you ever doubt that." The bearded man said pointing an angry finger at Lily.

"Oh please, I've met women with more testosterone than you," she said. "It looks like all of yours went into covering you head to toe in hair, when what you really needed was a few inches."

Full blown laughter could be heard from above leaving the bearded man's face red with anger and embarrassment.

"All right no more games! Either you come with cuffs on or your coming with third degree burns!" He said as he clenched his fist tightly.

Jessie could hear a crackling sound and watched as the man's clenched fist became encapsulated in a bright hot fire.

"Yeah I've got a lady friend with fire hotter than yours, that doesn't impress me."

The look of confusion on the man's face was almost enough for Jessie to forget the severe pain he was in. Almost.

"What's the matter with you? Don't you understand the situation you're in?" The man asked. The fire in his hand dwindled into nothing leaving him looking down at his palms in annoyance.

"I understand more now, having a little performance anxiety there bud? It's fine happens to a lot of boys." Lily said pointing sheepishly towards his pants.

A chorus of men laughing from above them left the Bearded Man red faced. His embarrassment, obvious to anyone with eyes, left him fuming.

Jessie smiled as he had no energy to laugh left in him. The pool of blood around him grew touching the boots of the Bearded Man. He watched as the man lifted his boot and in his disgust kick Jessie across the face.

"Now I've got blood on my new boots, thanks asshole." The man complained turning his attention back to Lily who had launched herself at him.

Wrapping herself around the man she tightened her grip choking him. Jessie could hear his gasping breaths and his face lose its red shade.

In desperation he ignited both of his hands burning Lily and giving her the third degree burns he had promised. She screamed as she untangled her self, desperate to escape the heat.

"Finally...we can do this the hard way!" The man roared as he tossed balls of fire towards Lily.

She stretched towards a tower of crates and pulled back her arm, only to have to stretch away as the balls of fire narrowly missed her. The smell of burnt hair filled the room as more projectiles missed Lily. She stretched towards the catwalk grabbing hold of one of the soldiers above and slamming them against the railing.

With her free hand she grabbed hold of the pistol at their side before throwing them back towards the wall behind them.

Ok I really need to remember not to get on her bad side.

"She's got a weapon! Open fire!" A soldier cried out. Suddenly every weapon was pointed towards Lily and her face paled as a symphony of safety's were clicked off.

"Think again G man!" A voice cried out.

Jessie turned to see every soldier cry out in pain as a switchblade was plunged into every single one. Stray bullets were fired striking other soldiers and the men who had done the stabbing disappeared in a cloud of smoke. All except one who pushed the last standing soldier over the railing onto the floor below.

Dead silence filled the room as the two chosen stared up to see Toby remove his helmet. His makeup smeared face looked down at The bearded man with a scowl.

"Oops, looks like you're all that's left little man." He sneered leaning against the railing.

"I'm more than enough to finish the job, now that they're gone I don't have to worry about accidentally hitting their sorry asses." The bearded man said as he undid the buttons to his long coat.

"This is how it's meant to be anyways. Chosen fighting chosen, a battle for supremacy. Oh and the names Starkiller not little man, you fucking fairy." Starkiller said as he dropped his coat to the floor.

"I can excuse the homophobia but Starkiller? What a stupid fucking name." Toby said with a chuckle.

"You're not even on theme, what sort of star powers do you have? You have fireballs with E.D, you can come up with something better than that." Lily said as she held up the pistol in her hands.

"Guys...these are all solid burns, but I'm currently bleeding out here. Can you beat this asshole already!" Jessie said feeling all the warmth in his body slowly disappear.

Before she could respond Starkiller had thrown a volley of fire towed as her catching the pistol in her hands. She cried out in pain as she quickly dropped the service weapon before catching a blow to her face.

She was sent flying into the crate behind her cracking the wood. With barely enough time for her to recover Starkiller swung again narrowly missing her as she stretched away.

"What a cheap shot!" She screamed as stretched her arm around a barrel beside her.

She flung the barrel towards him catching him in the chest.

"I should shoot you for sucker punching her like that!" Toby yelled from above. "Wait I can shoot you."

He bent down to grab one of the dropped rifles only for it to be melted by Starkiller.

"This is a fight for survival between Chosen! Use your powers or die!" He screamed as he launched another volley at the catwalk below Toby's feet melting right through the metal.

The catwalk creaked and groaned as the metal supporting it broke apart. Toby grabbed the railing desperately, he held on as it came tumbling down into the mountain of crates.

"Toby!" Lily cried out.

"One down, two to go." Starkiller boasted. He turned towards Jessie with a look on his face that left Jessie feeling colder. "Might as well finish this one off, he's already got one foot in the grave!"

Jessie desperately crawled away feeling too weak to lift himself up. Slipping on his own blood he crawled towards Toby.

"Oh this is so cute, he thinks he can get away!" Starkiller said as he lifted his hand into the air.

At the sudden burst of heat behind him Jessie turned to see two projectiles coming straight towards him. Gasping he raised his arms in a vain attempt to protect himself.

Holy shit!

Right as he resigned himself to death he felt a hand clasp around his ankle and pull him away just as the fire scorched the floor behind him. As he was being dragged by his leg he watched as Starkiller sent volley after volley behind him. He looked toward his savior to see Lily coiling her free arm and launching her fist straight into Starkiller's face.

Jessie's leg tapped against Lily as he finally reached his destination. He looked up to see her smiling down at him.

"Thank you." Jessie said softly.

"You're welcome." She said as she helped him sit up. His whole body ached as he rested against a crate beside her. "Now help me come up with a plan to take this guy out."

"Punch him?"

"I should have let him cook you."

"You both are really starting to get on my last nerve!" Starkiller cried out. He clutched his eye in his hand, a terrible red mark across his face had started to appear.

"Ain't a single one of you strong enough to take me down! I'm the top dog, I'm the strongest chosen there is!" He yelled igniting his free hand.

"Buddy you're not even in the top ten, calm down." Lily scoffed as she coiled her arm once again.

"I've heard just about enough I can take come out of your damn mouth! I'll show you something that proves me I'm the best!" Starkiller roared as balled his fists.

Igniting both filled the room with a heat so intense Jessie could feel his eyebrows burning. A look of pure hate and excitement washed over Starkilllers face as he slammed his two fists together pointing them towards the two.

"When you get to Hell tell them Starkiller sent you!" He roared as a ball of fire twice his size came barreling towards them.

Jessie's eyes darted to Lily only to see her frozen in fear at the absolute wall of fire that came at them. Without thinking he grabbed her by her collar pulling as hard as his weakened body could and threw her away from danger. He watched as she slammed into the wall beside.

He watched as she stared at him slack jawed as the fire engulfed him.

There was heat, so much more than he had ever felt in his life, more than his body was able to take. Every breath he took singed his lungs, fried his throat, destroyed his voice. It wasn't enough to stop him from screaming, the sound of his voice and the roar of the flames drowned out everything around him.

He clawed at his arms desperately trying to put out the flames as they hungrily devoured him. What little strength he had left faded away as he dropped to his knees, gasping under the suffocating flames.

As his face hit the cold floor his grasp on the world faded away, leaving him completely numb.
