Chapter 20
"Light that bastard up!" One of the soldiers screamed as the monster chewed on his captain. A fierce stream of bullets pelted the monster as it screeched and writhed on the floor. They didn't let up until there were more holes than monster. It fell to the ground with a hearty thud.
"Captain!" One of the soldiers cried out as she moved towards him only to be stopped by another soldier's arm. She had a Red Cross on her helmet and Jessie guessed she was field medic.
"It could still be alive. He's already dead there's nothing we can do."
"We can't just give up!" The soldier said pushing past their arm and rushing to the man on the floor.
She pushed aside the monsters body and went to work examining the body of her captain laying on the ground, taking his pulse and realizing what everyone else already knew.
"It's no use...he's gone.." she whispered as she held his hand.
"Treat Richards, thanks to that asshole, he has glass in his face." The male soldier said while glaring at Lucas.
Jessie turned to who he guessed was Richards lying on the floor groaning, his face a bloody mess.
"I understand, I'm on it." She said as she pulled out a first aid kit from one of her many pouches.
Jessie lifted his head up to see smoke coming from his jaw as it fixed itself in place.
I guess I'm more like Plague than I realized.
He grabbed his jaw and got to his knees before he felt the pressure of a gun barrel on the back of his head.
"We aren't done here freak. My captains dead and it's all your fault." The male soldier said putting more pressure on the barrel with each word.
"To be completely fair, the cat caused all of this and it was on your side. If anything this was friendly fire." Toby said from behind the bar.
Suddenly the monster's body started convulsing on the floor violently, causing everyone to jump and stare in disbelief. As it shook it slowly started to bleed from all of its eyes in a disgusting shower of red.
Jessie felt the barrel move away from his head and seized his moment. With one swift kick, he toppled the soldier behind him. He ran at the bar and jumped over it, landing on Toby.
"Good to have you here man." Toby said winded, as he laid underneath Jessie.
"Get him!" The soldier cried out as he grabbed at the air behind Jessie's feet.
"Boss! We got bigger problems!" Richards yelled as he pointed to the now still body of the monster.
It was still and the limbs slowly lifted the torso into the air, it's back pointed towards the ground.
"Is it still alive?" One of the hostages asked as she backed away slowly.
"No way it could be after all those shells."
A quiet hiss filled the room and everyone stopped dead.
"Is-is it hissing?" The medic asked taking a step closer to the body.
"I don't think you should do that." Lucas said taking a step back.
All of a sudden the hissing stopped and the body's chest split open, releasing a gas cloud into the room. Almost instantly the room was filled, the windows blew out by the sheer force. As the gas escaped the room it was quickly replaced as more gas was expelled from the corpse. It didn't seem to stop.
"Everyone get back!" Lucas cried out covering his face with his jacket.
Jessie felt his lungs burn as he breathed in the noxious gas, covering his mouth he looked out over the bar to see the carnage.
The medic who was the closest to the body now lay writhing on the floor, alongside the soldiers and hostages behind her.
He looked around to see his friends coughing and struggling to stand. Lucas fell to his knees and clutched onto a barstool, only to have it fall to the ground.
What do I do? At this rate, we'll all be dead in a few seconds!
Jessie felt a hand weakly clasp around his ankle and looked down to see Toby struggling to keep his eyes open.
"Help him." Toby said weakly pointing to a weakened Akita before his head fell to the floor.
Jessie gasped and shook Toby hoping his eyes would open again to no avail.
He looked around to see he was the only person still awake and was confused.
Ha-have I gotten used to the gas? It doesn't burn like it did before.
Jessie felt his chest and felt fine, breathing in the gas was no different than air.
What's happening to me? Everyone around me is dying and I'm powerless.
He looked at Akita, who lay on the floor, motionless.
I have to try something, even if it kills me.
Jessie closed his eyes and exhaled slowly, feeling that chill once again. He could feel the gas cling to him, as he inhaled a cloud of black some filled the air around him. The smoked curled around him completely encapsulating the area around him. It covered the bar as Jessie watched it live through the air.
It's pushing out the gas, it's almost eating it? I have an idea, I hope I can pull this off.
He clapped his hands together and felt the smoke around him suddenly come alive with activity around him. He closed his eyes and could feel everything his smoke touched.
He opened his eyes as he his hands commanded the smoke to push back the waves of gas right down the middle of the room filling the gap with air. Feeling the sudden resistance, the corpse shook and screeched unleashing a force of gas pushing Jessie back.
"What even is this thing. It's like fighting a wind tunnel!" Jessie said struggling to get a foothold.
Jessie's knees shook as he pushed back against the rushing wave emanating from the monster's corpse.
This little trick isn't gonna work if I can't stop that thing. I can feel my body struggling just to hold it back. There doesn't seem to be any end to this!
As if responding to Jessie's cries, the corpse screeched and opened its chest wider expelling more gas than before.
Jessie's head dropped as he was pushed back. Straining to get a foothold, Jessie spotted Lucas' head stir.
Salvation!
With one hand pushing back the wall of gas, Jessie used his free hand to send a small stream of smoke into Lucas' nose.
I really hope I don't kill him.
The sudden rush of air entering his nose shocked Lucas awake. He gasped, grabbing his throat as a sickly black mist poured from his mouth.
"God! What was that, a reverse sneeze?" Lucas said rubbing his nose.
"A little help here!" Jessie yelled as he pushed once more against the gas. With every ounce of strength left in him, he pushed back. Suddenly the room became swarmed by a rushing of wind leaving the corpse grasping for a foothold.
"Shoot it!" Jessie screamed against the wind.
With a single motion, Lucas pulled his revolver out of thin air and cocked back the hammer.
"Duck!" Lucas yelled.
Letting go of his control of the wind, Jessie dived for the floor and covered his head.
"Now!" Jessie screamed as the winds died around them.
Grasping onto a knocked over table the mangled remains of the creature screeched and lunged at Jessie, bearing his yellow teeth.
"I live for this shit." Lucas mumbled as a sudden boom filled the bar ruins. The air was electric as a bolt of lightning passed through the creature. As it writhed on the floor beside Jessie, Lucas stood up and reloaded.
"Normal bullets have no effect on this thing. So I'll have to give it a bit more juice." He said as he placed his hand slowly over the hammer of his revolver.
Jessie could feel the air around him buzz as he stared at Lucas who's eyes were so focused on the monster he didn't notice the glow coming from the barrel of his gun.
A burst of lightning stronger than Jessie had seen before pierced the soft skin of the monster as it convulsed from the electricity pulsed through its body. It's teeth clicked together and Jessie could have sworn it sounded musical as the monsters body slumped to the ground.
The room was silent except for the soft cries from what used to be a man.
It's still alive?! After that!
"Jessie, come to us. Slowly." Lucas whispered.
Jessie looked past Lucas to see Akita slowly getting up. He was bracing himself against his sword and coughed as black mist poured from the corners of his mask. Jessie could see a small stream of air dissipate near Akita.
Did I do that?
"Get up, this isn't over." Lucas said taking a step closer. The floorboard beneath him creaked and the monster stopped. Jessie stared in fear and watched as its teeth clattered.
Out of the corner of his eye, Jessie saw Akita slowly inch his way towards him. His hand was on the hilt of his blade and he moved with purpose.
"I think it heard me." Lucas said quietly.
The monster stood on its legs shakily and looked around dripping blood on the floor. His skin was charred and his teeth shook with excitement.
"Jessie I need you to move now. Come to me." Lucas said never breaking his gaze on the beast.
The monster stared at Jessie with malicious intent in its eyes. Jessie stared deep into the eyes of what used to be a man and felt nothing but murderous intent from them. The longer Jessie stayed still the more vicious its teeth shook. No one moved, no one broke the silence out of fear.
"Was it just me or did that gas smell like onions?" Toby groggily said as his head poked up from behind the bar.
The monster screeched and Jessie watched in horror as it shot its teeth in the direction of Toby's voice.
They never made it to their target as Lucas shot them out of the air quickly fanning the hammer of his revolver. The chamber spun out of place and Lucas gasped. A small stream of blood appeared from the corner of his mouth.
"Get out of the way!" Lucas screamed as the air crackled around him violently.
Jessie felt a pull on his shoulder and looked up to see Akita struggling to pull him up.
"How much do you weigh?" Akita groaned pulling Jessie to his feet. Being led by Akita, Jessie turned to the monster amazed, who's body was now growing in size to match that of a small cow. The sound of bones cracking almost matched the sound of Lucas reloading his gun.
Almost.
"Give it the hammer!" Toby yelled as he threw a bottle of clear liquid at the monster. It broke apart covering the beast in vodka.
It wasn't fazed.
It's been getting stronger the more we throw at it. It's adapting.
All thoughts were drowned out by the sudden symphony of thunder as a bright blue light filled the entire room. It was shortly followed a red burning screech as the monster writhed in pain.
Lucas stood firm in front of the flames, banishing his weapon and admiring his handiwork.
"If that doesn't kill it nothing will." Akita said solemnly. "Nothing survives Lucas' lightning. Not one."
Jessie stared at Lucas and was amazed by just how powerful he was, and how dangerous.
