Chapter 19
"What the fuck is that!" Lucas screamed as he fired a bolt of lightning at the beast, sending it flying towards the hostages. They screamed and shuffled away from the body as fast as they could. They piled against the walls, one woman hid behind a soldier and cried.
He sighed and let go of Jessie. He stared at the charred remains of the monster on the floor and shook his head.
"That used to be a man and now there it lies on my floor. Do you see what your employer is doing to the townspeople? How can you stand behind him and watch as he does this." Lucas staring down the soldiers.
Some put their heads down and stared at the remains except one. He stood steadfast and stared back at Lucas. He was a smaller man with a patchy black beard.
"They pay for my sister's medical bills. For that, I'll do anything they ask, with no remorse." He said taking a seat on one of the remaining chairs.
"I admire the balls on you saying that as a science experiment lay dead next to you. I hope that reason helps keep you warm in that cold jail cell." Lucas said grasping his revolver with such force it shook in his hand.
"You don't get it, do you? They own this town, they own everything and everyone who matters! We won't even exist come tomorrow." The soldier said taking off his helmet revealing disheveled black hair.
"What are you talking about? What's happening tomorrow?" Jessie said as he walked out from behind the bar.
"Jessie get back here! What are you doing?" Toby said getting up from his hiding spot.
"Toby they've lost their will to fight. Their friend just offer himself in front of them. They no longer wish to fight." Akita said sheathing his sword with a click.
The soldier chuckled.
"He's right. Even if I ordered my men to fire I know they wouldn't. They are good men." He said solemnly as he stared at his dead friend laying on the floor. A pool of blood had started to collect and soaked his boots. The other soldiers started to untie the hostages and sat on the floor. One cried and held the woman who hid behind him. One man ran immediately from the bar.
"This is a bar right? Get me a drink and I'll tell you all. What else have I got to lose right?" The man said unstrapping his helmet.
"Didn't you just say they paid for your sister's bills? Won't they stop paying them if they find out you told us what they were planning?" Jessie asked picking up a bullet-ridden chair from the ground.
"After what I heard tonight it won't matter anyway, we'll all be dead by tomorrow." He said as he watched the hostages who were too frightened to move.
One shook in shock and stared at the remains of the monster.
Jessie felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Lucas with a glass of brown liquid in his hand.
"If what you tell me is worth it, I'll give you the drink. So get to talking." Lucas said as he picked up one of the ruined chairs. He placed the drink on top of the table and stared at the man.
The man scoffed and ran a hand through his hair. He shook his head and his eyes fell once more on his comrade on the floor. He sighed and stared at Lucas.
"Alright, alright." He sighed. "You ever wonder when the world was gonna end?" He said with a raised eyebrow.
Jessie looked at Lucas confused and he returned it with a shrug.
"I was sent to base to pick up some new equipment for my men when I noticed the boss was talking to one of his super-powered cronies. I don't think he noticed I was around. Now seeing as he was my boss and apparently the leader to this so called militia, I felt inclined to listen to what he was saying, so I hid behind a pillar and listened. He was talking about something called the Zero event and how it was going to be the end of the pain." He said looking concerned.
"The crony seemed really upset about not being able to eat people anymore, which made my skin crawl by the way, and asked why they were doing all of this."
"Boss man got really angry with said crony and spoke with a tone that made my blood freeze. He said 'This is Seth's dream. I won't let anything get in the way of that, even you' " The soldier said as he eyed the drink on the table.
"Seth?! Are you sure he said Seth?" Jessie asked as he leaned in.
"Yeah, I remember distinctly he said that name. I don't know why but the crony he was talking to became very scared when he mentioned him."
Plague seems to think it was Seth's wish to end the world, but why? If he was so concerned with fulfilling some world ending wish why kill the guy your trying to honor?
"Anything else?" Lucas said as he leaned forward.
"Didn't hear much after that. I dropped a wrench by accident and didn't stick around long enough to see what happened to eavesdroppers. I've seen what that bird brain does to people, and I know when he says something like this, he means it." The man said pointing his finger on the table.
"Here, I'm only giving this to you because your story matches what we already know so far." Lucas said sliding the drink across the table. The man grabbed it and smiled.
"Cheers! To the end of the world!" He said as he downed the drink.
"You seem really calm considering your talking about the literal apocalypse here." Jessie said drawing his attention.
He laughed and held his side.
"Kid all of us have here have decided our lives are worthless. Dying means nothing to any of us, why do you think they hired us? We're expendable." He said with a twisted smile.
Jessie was taken aback.
"That must be an extremely lonely way to live. How could you think your life is meaningless?" Jessie asked confused.
"Kid I was in Afghanistan, if you saw and did half the things I've had to do then you'd understand." He said as he poked at the ice in the glass. He shook it and stared at Lucas.
Lucas scoffed and stood up.
Jessie heard groaning and looked to see the man who was shaking was now rocking back and forth.
"I can't believe you can sit here and drink so casually after what you did to these people." Jessie said in disgust.
The man stared at Jessie and mumbled to himself.
"What was that?" Jessie asked leaning forward.
The man suddenly grabbed his shirt and pulled him out of his seat. Jessie shook out of his grip and punched the man in the jaw only to be struck in the back of his head by the butt of a gun by another soldier and fall to his knees.
Lucas screamed and threw the bottle he was bringing at the man who hit Jessie in the head. The man fell on his behind and clutched his head screaming at the glass shards in his head.
The man held his jaw and pulled out a pistol and pressed it against Jessie's forehead.
"Sorry kid but orders are orders. Even if they are from a guy in a fucking bird mask. If this is the end of the world, there's going to be a war. I plan on being on the winning side." He said as he bent his knees to get to Jessie's level.
"Let the kid go or you'll see what it feels like to stick a fork in an outlet asshole." Lucas said manifesting his revolver out of thin air. It was transparent and moved through his fingers. It fell into place in his palm and it glowed for a second as it appeared in his hand.
"Neat magic trick, but I've seen more terrifying powers than yours and I'm not afraid of it." The man said with his twisted smile.
Lucas fired at the wall behind him, the air crackling around his bullet as it just barely missed the man. He didn't flinch.
"Now, this kid here is gonna tell me where the girl is since I was so kind to tell him my secret. Friends tell each other secrets don't they, and we are such close friends aren't we Jessie?" The man said as he placed the gun barrel under his jaw and raised it so their eyes met.
Disoriented Jessie stared and felt the back of his head. He felt something wet and feared the worst.
"We have no idea what you're talking about! Now let him go or I'll barbecue your sorry ass!" Lucas yelled.
Out of the corner of his eye, Jessie saw the body of the monster twitch. His eyes widened as the man who was rocking was still as a rock and blood flowed from his eyes.
"Was I talking to you blondie? Hmmm? No? Then shut the fuck up!" The soldier said as he slapped Jessie across the face with his gun.
Jessie felt his jaw pop and he fell to the floor facing the monster's body. He felt the sting and his eyes teared up. He closed his eyes for a moment and felt his body ache in pain. When he opened them he saw the monster's body was now crawling towards him.
"Gys" Jessie weakly said as his jaw ached.
"Don't play with me fucker, put your gun away or I'll paint my bar walls red!" Lucas said taking a step closer.
The man cocked backed the hammer of his gun with a solid click and smiled.
"As long as I have the gun pointed at this brat's head I hold all the power. None of you will take a shot at me. No one can kill me!" The man screamed as the monster sank his rows of teeth into his head.
The man screamed and shook as the monster viciously attacked his body. Suddenly he stopped shaking and the gun fell from his hand, leaving only the sound of the tearing of flesh to be heard.
