Newt and Neeki found the Obscurus in the subway. He walked through the tunnels quietly. The Obscurus gently swirled in the air above the train tracks. She was in her animal form, not trusting the black swirl. She could sense its sadness and anger. Those two emotions combined never had great outcomes.
Newt was hiding behind a pillar as he talked to it. "Credence. It's Credence, isn't it? I'm here to help you, Credence. I'm not here to hurt you," Newt reassured him.
The sound of soft footsteps could be heard. The pacing was deliberate. Newt moved out from behind the pillar and stepped onto the train tracks. Neeki trailed after him, eyeing the Obscurus's moments. Credence was a shadow inside of the Obscurus. He was scared.
"I've met someone just like you, Credence. A girl - a young girl who'd been imprisoned. She'd been locked away and she'd been punished for her magic."
Credence listened. He never knew there was another person like him. Slowly, the Obscurus left, leaving only Credence, huddled on the train tracks. Newt crouched on the floor. Credence looked at him with hope.
"Credence, can I come over to you? Can I come over?" Newt asked.
Newt slowly moved forward. Neeki's hair stood up. She looked to the side and immediately pounced on Newt, taking the hit. A bright light had struck her. She whimpered but got back up on her feet as she circled Newt and growled. Graves marched down the tunnel with intense purpose as Credence ran away. Newt scrambled to his feet, wand drawn. Graves stood on the platform, continuing to duel with Newt and Neeki, who stood on the train tracks. Credence cowered behind him. Graves cast a spell that rippled along the train tracks and down the tunnel, finally blasting Newt. He landed on his back. Graves repeatedly threw spell after spell but most managed to hit Neeki who always jumped in the way.
"My, my, Kayla Tarnovsky, look at how well you've grown," Graves whispered. "But this is not your time to shine!"
He continued to whip Neeki until she dropped to the floor, then he moved onto Newt with a crazed look on his face. Credence was shaking, unable to control his sorrow and anger before he finally turned back into an Obscurial.
"Credence, no!" Tina shouted.
Tina ran onto the tracks. Inches from Graves's face, the Obscurus froze. Slowly, it rose back up, swirling more gently, staring at Tina, who looked straight back into its eyes.
"Don't do this - please," she pleaded.
"Keep talking, Tina. Keep talking to him - he'll listen to you. He's listening," Newt reassured.
Inside the Obscurus, Credence reached out to Tina, the only person who had ever done him an uncomplicated kindness. He looked at Tina, desperate and afraid. He had dreamed of her ever since she saved him from a beating.
"I know what that woman did to you... I know that you've suffered... You need to stop this now ...Newt and I will protect you..."
Graves was on his feet.
Tina pointed at Graves. "This man - he is using you."
"Don't listen to her, Credence. I want you to be free. It's all right," Graves reassured.
Tina ignored Graves and continued to calm Credence. "That's it..."
The Obscurus was beginning to shrink. Its dreadful face was becoming more human, more like Credence's own. Suddenly, Aurors begin pouring down the steps of the subway and into the tunnel. More Aurors advanced from behind Tina with their wands raised aggressively.
"Shhh! Don't, you'll frighten him," Tina whispered.
The Obscurus let out a terrible moan and began to swell again. The station was crumbling. Tina wheeled around, trying to protect Credence. Newt was sitting in the concrete, one arm wrapped around Neeki's slashed body. She had transformed back after fainting. Graves spun to face the Aurors, wand at the ready.
"Wands down! Anyone harms him - they'll answer to me," Graves threatened. He turned back to Credence. "Credence!"
"Credence," Tina whispered.
The Aurors began pelting the Obscurus with spells.
"No!" Graves shouted.
Credence howled in pain. The Aurors continued to aim spells at the Obscurus, their efforts unrelenting and brutal. Under the pressure, the Obscurus imploded - a white ball of magical light taking over from the black mass. The force of the change sent Tina and the Aurors stumbling backward. All power subsided. Only small tatters of black matter were left, floating through the air like feathers. Tina remained on the floor, crying. Newt was trying his best to heal Neeki while keeping track of Credence. Graves climbed up onto the platform. The Aurors advanced toward Graves.
"You fools. Do you realize what you've done?" Graves seethed as the others watched him with interest.
"The Obscurial was killed on my orders, Mr. Graves," Madam Picquery said.
"Yes. And history will surely note that, Madam President," he retorted in a threatening tone as he moved toward her along the platform. "What was done here tonight was not right!"
"He was responsible for the death of a No-Maj. He risked the exposure of our community. He has broken one of our most sacred laws - "
Graves laughed bitterly. "A law that has us scuttling like rats in the gutter! A law that demands that we conceal our true nature! A law that directs those under its dominion to cower in fear lest we risk discovery! I ask you, Madam President - I ask all of you- who does this law protect? Us? Or them? I refuse to bow down any longer," he stated as he walked away.
"Aurors, I'd like you to relieve Mr. Graves of his wand and escort him back to - "
As Graves moved down the platform, a wall of white light suddenly appeared in front of him, blocking his path. He thought for a moment with a sneer. Then, he turned around and fired spells at both groups of Aurors facing him. Spells flew back at him from all angles, but Graves blocked them all. In a split second, Newt pulled the cocoon from his pocket and released it at Graves. The Swooping Evil soared around him, shielding Newt, Neeki, and the Aurors from Graves's spells, and giving Newt time to raise his wand. Newt slashed it through the air, a crackling rope of supernatural light wrapping itself around Graves like a whip. It was payback. Graves tried to hold it off, but he struggled and fell to his knees, dropping his wand.
"Accio," Tina whispered, his wand flying into her free hand.
"Revelio," Newt said.
Graves began to transform into the man in wanted posters. He was Gellert Grindelwald. There were murmurs amongst the crowd. Madam Picquery moved toward him.
Grindelwald laughed. "You think you can hold me?"
Madam Picquery smiled. "We'll do our best, Mr. Grindelwald."
He was forced to his feet by two Aurors, who moved him toward the entrance. Newt was consoling a barely conscious Neeki, who leaned on his side.
"As Grindelwald reached Newt and Neeki, he paused, smiling. "Will we die, just a little?" His eyes flashed to Neeki. Her eyes were barely open. "I'm sure I'll see more of you, Miss Tarnovsky."
He was led out of the subway. Newt watched, bemused.
"Take him away," Madam Picquery ordered.
Queenie and Jacob pushed their way through to the front of the Aurors. Jacob held Newt's case, while Queenie hugged Tina. Newt stared at Jacob.
"Hey... I figured somebody oughta keep an eye on this thing," Jacob said, handing the case to Newt.
"Thank you," Newt said, thankful.
Madam Picquery addressed the group as she stared through the broken roof of the subway station. "We owe you an apology, Mr. Scamander. But the magical community is exposed! We cannot Obliviate an entire city!" Madam Picquery exclaimed.
"Actually, I think we can," Newt replied.
Newt placed his case wide-open underneath the huge hole in the subway roof. Suddenly, the Thunderbird bursts in a flurry of feathers. The crowd of Aurors backed away. Frank flapped his powerful wings and hovered above them. Newt moved forward to examine Frank. He was so proud of Frank.
"I was intending to wait until we got to Arizona, but it seems like now you are our only hope, Frank."
The two shared an understanding look. Newt reached out his arm, and Frank pressed his beak lovingly into the embrace. They nuzzled each other affectionately.
.
"I'll miss you too." Newt stepped back, taking the flask of Swooping Evil venom from his pocket. "You know what you've got to do," Newt sadly said.
Newt threw the vial high up into the air. Frank let out a sharp cry, catching it in his beak and immediately soaring out of the subway. No-Majs and Aurors alike shouted and recoiled as Frank burst from the subway. He flew higher into the air, creating a storm. He crushed the vial in his beak. The powerful venom spread through the thick rain, enchanting it. The rain washed away all the No-Maj's memories of magic. Frank soared through the streets of New York, churning up more rain as he flew. Then, he was gone, carefree and happy.
"They won't remember anything. That venom has incredibly powerful Obliviative properties," Newt responded.
"We owe you a great deal, Mr. Scamander. Now - get that case out of New York." Madam Picquery sighed.
Newt nodded and bit his lip. "Yes, Madam President."
Madam Picquery began to walk away, her pack of Aurors moving with her. Suddenly, she turned around. Queenie stood protectively in front of Jacob, trying to hide him. Madam Picquery looked at Jacob. "Obliviate him. There can be no exceptions. I'm sorry, but even one witness... Well, you know the law. I'll let you say good-bye."
