Prologue
Silence.
Everywhere the little blonde girl turned, she heard silence.
From the corner of her eye, she could see the jury mumbling, while her parents stared into her eyes, expressionless.
She knew she wasn't surrounded by silence but her ears blocked out any sound that was made.
She grabbed her copper water bottle from the table, sipping its contents as her surroundings were more clear to her.
This was it. The last day of her trial. The day that would decide the course of the rest of her life.
She looked up from her bottle to see a man in a suit, looking at her reassuringly. His kind blue eyes and receding white hair brought a confident smile to her face.
She looked at her parents again, who she noticed, were arguing quietly. From the distance, she could not make out their words but she knew for a fact that they were discussing her.
She felt something burn her eyes slowly as she brought a handkerchief towards her eyes, wiping the salty tears that were just beginning to form.
No matter the verdict of the case, she knew her parents would never show her the same love again.
It was a recurring thought that never seemed to go away, that seemed to keep her up all night as she tossed around in bed, anxious.
All her thoughts came to a halt when the faint sound of someone's footsteps filled the room.
The man, a family friend, and her present lawyer squeezed her hand in reassurance as a woman in her 40s sat on the leather judge's bench.
Adrenaline kicked in as the little girl found comfort in squeezing her now empty water bottle.
The woman began to speak but once again, everything around her went silent.
Her ears started ringing and her eyes darted from one corner to the other, relying on people's expressions to realize what happened.
She felt huge arms around her tiny stature, and it was not an embrace of sorrow. A huge smile appeared on her pale face.
She looked at her lawyer, who held an even bigger smile on his face.
"All the charges have been dropped!" he said with excitement.
She opened her mouth to speak but couldn't muster up the words. After all, what words could express her gratitude towards him?
"Thank you! Thank you so much, uncle!" she said, her eyes glistening as the light touched them. Tears rolled down her cheek as she reached out to her lawyer and wrapped her arms around him.
"Even mom and dad didn't help me as much as you did," she said softly as she buried her face in his black suit.
He chuckled softly, kneeling down to see her in the eye, "And one day, you'll do the same for someone else."
Her mother grabbed her by her arm, after acknowledging his service briefly.
"Your father doesn't want to be in court for a moment longer," her mother said sternly. Taking the hint, she followed her mom's footsteps but glanced back one more time.
Her lawyer gave her a warm smile as she mouthed the words thank you.
As her feet stepped out of the court, she was guided to her father's blue Land Rover Discovery.
Her parents didn't utter a word on the drive back but for once, it didn't seem to bother her.
Her parents were the last thing on her mind at that moment. All she could think about was her new hero, a man she would never forget in her life.
He was her guardian angel; he was her hero.
She clutched her palms with determination and looked out the window, where she pictured her guardian angel hovering, ready to protect her from any other adversity.
With fire in her eyes, she muttered under her breath, "I will make you proud."
