Chapter 21

Levi's head spun when he shot out of bed. He mindlessly rushed towards the bathroom right beside the hall and fumbled with the knob. He threw the door open and try to kneel down near the toilet but it was too late. Lumps of curdled milk flew from his mouth, barely missing the toilet. He put his head down as he felt more lumps hammering in his throat.

Evelyn entered right after him and stayed near the door. She inched closer hesitantly as he began to cough and sputter the remnants of the whole milk carton. She patted his back softly but made sure she was at least ten inches away from the toilet bowl.

"That was nasty," she remarked as he lifted himself up.

"Not really as nasty as drinking the whole carton," he said.

"Go brush your teeth or something. I can't be in such close proximity to someone who just vomited," Evelyn said sternly.

"No time, I need to go to the hospital," Levi said.

"Why, so that you can give them a sample of your upcoming dysentery?" Evelyn asked.

"What the fuck, Evelyn?" he said, gagging.

"Oh god, there's no need to throw up again," Evelyn joked, "it does make sense though. At least they'll know for sure you've had food poisoning."

"Exactly. I almost forgot, here's your phone in case you run into trouble," Levi said, handing it over to her.

"Right. I had forgotten as well," Evelyn said, taking it from him, "you should get going. I'll head over to Andrea's house and see what I can find."

"Okay," Levi said, eyeing the mess he had created, "I'll clean that up as soon as I'm back."

"No need for that. I can handle it before I leave," Evelyn said.

"You really don't have to do that-" Levi protested.

"It's not like I'm going to use my hands. I'll just use the hand shower to push it away. You better get leaving," Evelyn said.

"Wow- thanks," Levi replied, a smile growing on his face.

"Bye now," Evelyn said, ushering him out.

The moment his feet stepped outside, he was filled with mixed feelings of longingness and fear. It had never occurred to him how much he had missed going out, speeding in his dad's car. The cool breeze brushing his untidy hair came as a surprise since no open window could replicate this feeling.

He looked down at his feet and at that moment, the tracker looked like a gun. Not its shape, but the fear it instilled in him seemed like a matter of life and death. He was outside his house for the first time in a week and while the number was little, the feeling of being locked inside took a toll on him, more than he had realized.

He needed to leave. He knew the police would come after him and it was best if it happened after he reached the hospital. At least that way, he would have a reasonable explanation.

He strode out of his gates but not before touching them. What was once something of insignificance to him now brought him nostalgic memories of when he had first moved in here. He chided himself for wasting time before walking on the streets that surrounded his house.

The hospital wasn't too far away and he hoped Andrea hadn't already reached it. This would allow Evelyn enough time to snoop around, given she needed to drive to their house first.

Levi knew there was a shorter way to get to the hospital, he just didn't know what way that was. After all, he never needed to walk anywhere when he had a car in hand. So, he stuck to the car's route and walked on the left side of the road, facing the onlooking traffic.

When he entered the huge hall of the hospital, he only had one wish - people would see him as Alec Coleman's son rather than an arson offender. With the hospital being so close to home, it was almost impossible that people wouldn't have heard what he did and that was a confrontation he wasn't willing to have.

The only confrontation he needed was from Andrea.

And there she was, her back to the wall near the restroom, looking anxiously at her phone. Levi approached her cautiously, making sure that he didn't grab any attention.

As Levi opened his mouth to speak, Andrea recoiled away from the vomit stench breathing out of his mouth.

"No need to overact. You wait right here, you hear me?" Levi questioned authoritatively, "I will get a consultation letter from the doctor in case the police shows up."

"Watch your tone, Levi. You're not in the position to anger me and get away with it," Andrea said, locking eyes with him.

"Oh, yea?" Levi asked, inching closer. She backed away and Levi wasn't sure if it was fear or vomit, but he reveled at the moment.

"Back the fuck off, Levi!" Andrea hissed, unwilling to cause a scene.

"Like it or not Andrea, I have something on you too! Two can play this game," Levi said.

Andrea scoffed, "oh, please don't get ahead of yourself. You'll tell your lawyer that I did it, so what? You can't actually prove it."

"I can't believe I let you scare me into not telling her! Not anymore. Why should I be afraid when you're the guilty one?" Levi asked, struggling to keep his voice low.

"You can drop the act of innocence, Levi. At least in front of me," Andrea said, a devilish smirk forming on her lips.

"You started the fire!" he exclaimed.

"Mhm," Andrea said. It was her turn to inch closer, "you've been getting tone-deaf."

"Yea, sure-" Levi said but he was cut off.

"You don't have proof that I started the fire but you know I do," she said, "arson isn't the only crime Levi."

It was never Levi's intention to speak sensibly with her. All he wanted was to distract her, for Evelyn. But hearing the words coming from her mouth, he felt afraid and guilty all over again. He knew she would bring it up and he had tried preparing himself for that but to no avail.

"My stand remains the same. Take the fucking blame for this or I'll tell everyone exactly what you did. I'm sure the fire wouldn't upset your father over what you really did," Andrea said.

Shame.

That was the last thing he felt before he felt someone rough up against his shoulder and push him to the wall.

Evelyn never understood why people left their spare keys underneath a flower pot, it was much too predictable. This time, she didn't mind. She had an easy way in and he didn't hesitate. Although her heart thrummed against her chest, her fingers moved the key into the lock and twisted it to the right until she heard it click.

She returned the key to its original position before setting foot into Iris' house. Illegally. She didn't know if it was the adrenaline or willpower that pushed her forward as she found herself stalking into a room she could only hope was Andrea's. This time, she didn't pay attention to the colorful walls and furniture that surrounded her - everything looked black and white.

She clutched her sweating palms, courtesy of the black leather gloves she was wearing. She walked over to the vanity mirror, looking for any clue that this room really was Andrea's. She opened the drawer right below the mirror and sighed with relief. Inside was the university's identity card and it had her name on it.

Right beside it, she found exactly what she had been looking for - her hairbrush. She picked it up carefully and examined the strands of hair left behind; it was definitely Andrea's. She took it out carefully and stuffed it inside the ziplock bag she had brought.

She looked around and hoped that she'd have enough time to come back and look for more hints. However, she needed to hurry up.

Evelyn walked out of the room and headed towards the shoe rack, the evidence Levi said he needed. Before she inspected the shoes, a realization struck her - even if Andrea had used wax, there was no way she wouldn't have discarded it. That would destroy the whole purpose of using it in the first place.

Despite knowing so, she opened the shoe rack. She hoped Andrea was unable to get all of it out or that she just didn't see it. She knew it was a weak plan but it was the only one she had. Time was running out and she was clinging to any string of hope she could find.

She struggled to examine the shoes since her body blocked all the sunlight that entered the room. She took every single shoe out individually to examine them. There was a familiar pattern of alternative studded boots, all in a different color. But the only color she look for was black. She had a mission and she wouldn't allow the pretty shoes to distract her.

As she continued doing so, she was surprised at how numb she was. She wanted to feel frightened for that was the normal reaction. Instead, her heart had stopped thrumming the minute she entered the house.

Rather, she was scared for Levi. If the police saw his symptoms, they'd keep a severe eye on him but it was nothing too serious. Still, it was what she didn't know that bothered her. She had never bothered to ask him what Andrea really had over him since she wasn't going to tell what she did to Andrew either. Now, that was the problem. If Andrea was able to convince him into working for her for so long, it was nothing good.

She exhaled heavily.

I should call him, she thought, picking her phone up.

As the phone rang, Evelyn waited anxiously. The fear that had been invisible only a few moments ago was rushing at her at once. She looked around the room in a panic, unsure of what was wrong.

She heard the sound of a car locking and knew the cause of her sudden fear. They were here.

Fuck.

Evelyn scanned the room hurriedly, looking for a place to hide. If she locked herself in a room, she'd be trapped when they found her. She needed a place that would give her room to run.

Still in a panic, she rushed beside the door, knowing that her time was up. There was no way they wouldn't find her but being near the door gave her room to run away.

Her breath stopped in her throat when she heard the lock click. This was it. She prayed silently, all the while keeping her focus on the door. Her face was numb but her legs were ready to spring up and get her far away from the house.

She wasn't sure whether the door was opening slowly or she was hallucinating. Iris' face came into view and Evelyn froze in her tracks at what happened next.

Levi answered her call.

"Evelyn thank the gods! I'm in trouble and-"

He spoke too loud.

Iris's face wasn't the only thing Evelyn could see.

Her eyes were facing Iris' and there was nothing she could do. She tried to back away but she was wedged between the wall and the door.

Her phone was knocked out of her hand and she regretted something already.

She wished she had the chance to scream for help.
