Chapter 10
Levi's eyes started to blur as his eyes fixated on the same pair of words for minutes. He needed to stay focused to read the papers but he couldn't. His eyes kept zoning out on him. Neither did they move, nor did they focus.
He felt Evelyn's presence beside him, reading along the words much quicker than he was. Her long, blonde hair brushed against his neck as she leaned closer to look at the text at the bottom of the page. Blood rushed to his cheek and his palms started to sweat, making it much harder for him to concentrate.
"Is it all clear then?" a woman asked, pulling Levi's eyes towards her.
Tamara Davis, age forty-six, and his current probation officer. She had arrived fifteen minutes after Evelyn did, papers in her hand and a stern look on her face. She reminded him of his science teacher from ninth grade who took her job too seriously and scolding was her way of disciplining the students.
"Almost," Evelyn said, eyeing Levi.
The papers had a long list of dos and don'ts that he couldn't remember. Something that did stay on his mind was that he wasn't allowed to go to school due to his possibly violent nature. He looked at Evelyn, assuming that she may argue to keep him in school but it appeared he was wrong. The house arrest was a huge advantage, and Levi wasn't complaining.
He was also supposed to abstain from alcohol and other substances and he supposed he could get used to it.
Those were the only two points that stuck to his head. He had been trying to read the rest for what seemed like years but the strong gaze from Tamara held his eyes frozen.
Evelyn cleared her throat before she spoke, "yes, it is all clear."
"What about you Mr.Coleman? Do you have any doubts?" Tamara asked.
"No, I haven't got any," he lied. He'd rather ask Evelyn to brief him on everything rather than read all those pages with Tamara right in front of him.
"Great. Do not break curfew and wear this around your ankle at all times," Tamara said, pulling out something that resembled a smartwatch, "we will get to know if you do either of those."
Levi took the GPS tracker from her hands and clasped it around his feet.
You can't leave the house now so don't do anything stupid, he told himself sternly, the face of the tracker staring right back at him.
"I will be here every Sunday to check your activities," she said and Levi only nodded.
"Keep those papers with you and remind yourself to not break the law again," Tamara said, eyeing him suspiciously. It was no surprise that people thought it was him and she made no effort to hide it.
"Well, that wraps this up," Tamara said, standing up. Evelyn followed the action immediately after her and held out her hand.
"Thank you for your time," Evelyn said as Tamara's hand grasped hers.
She picked her black, leather bag from the floor and walked away from the living room, towards the door. Her exit was accompanied by the slam on the door that rang in Levi's ears for several seconds.
It felt like the school bell was ringing, indicating that his science class had ended and he could finally heave a sigh of relief. And just like in school, with the exit of his science teacher came the entry of the math teacher, who in this case was Evelyn.
"You didn't read it, did you?" Evelyn asked.
"I read two points. The no school thing and the no alcohol thing," Levi replied.
Evelyn took her seat beside him and looked at the papers, searching for the most important points to inform him about.
"You are only allowed to leave your house for court hearings, medical emergencies, and for religious reasons," Evelyn said, "your offense is not a small one, considering so many people were injured."
"Can I talk to people?" Levi asked.
"You can but it's up to you to decide if you want to. Tamara may come in any day with a warrant to search your phone," Evelyn replied.
"But she said she'd only be here on Sundays," Levi said.
"Probation officers surprise visit anytime they please, and you can't really deny them entry," Evelyn said.
Levi's mind went straight to Andrea. He could delete the messages but what if Tamara had access to deleted messages? He wasn't even sure if it was possible and he didn't know how to ask Evelyn without raising suspicion. He could restrain himself from texting her but what if she did? What would he tell her and how?
Evelyn noticed the worried look on his face and knew exactly what he was thinking about. Andrea.
Ever since her conversation with her only two hours ago, she couldn't push the nagging feeling that told her that both of them were up to something. Seeing that Levi was already worried about Andrea, she knew it was the right time to let it all out.
"So, before I came here I was talking to Andrea," Evelyn said, and just as she expected, Levi's face jerked up to meet hers.
"That's-," Levi said, trying to find the right word, "interesting."
"Yes, it really was," Evelyn said, looking at Levi for any reaction, "especially since she said so many things that I wasn't aware of."
"I think you may be misunderstanding something that she said-" Levi began but Evelyn gave him no chance to explain. She was tired of going back and forth with him. Every time she asked him something, he'd spit out a new lie and it was getting old.
Levi had jeopardized the case from the very start, whether he meant to or not. And now, as if to add more fuel to the fire, Noah might be the public prosecutor and Evelyn knew she wouldn't dare make a fool out of herself in front of the jury; in front of Noah.
"Enough, Levi. She told me that you called her to the chemistry lab, but that is not what you told me. She told me that the camera looked broken but you told me you had no clue. How did you not notice it?" Evelyn asked although she was not looking for an answer.
"I really didn't notice it! Maybe I did call her the chemistry lab, I don't remember-"
"Stop talking Levi. You know, first I thought that you were the only one who was lying but that isn't true. I saw the look on your face when I said that Tamara would check your phone. You're worried Andrea might get you caught, aren't you?" Evelyn asked.
"You can't just go around assuming shit, alright? I told you everything and only after that did you take my case so really, I can't help it!" Levi said, his voice growing as he got more defensive.
Evelyn looked at him and scoffed. This was not the Levi she had got to know in the past week. He was not the Levi she sympathized with, not someone she thought she understood.
"Don't show me that attitude, Mr.Coleman. If this is what you want me to build your case from then fine, I'll gladly do so. Just don't bawl your eyes out when the court finds you guilty," Evelyn said. The words sounded so unnatural coming from her mouth.
This wasn't what she was like. She had never called out anyone blatantly for lying and yet here she was, doing just that. She looked at Levi who was holding his breath, afraid to make a move. Instantly, she felt a wave of guilt surge through her body. He wasn't innocent but that was no reason to scream at him when it wasn't even her place to do so.
"I'm sorry Evelyn," Levi said, almost in a whisper.
"I know there's more you're not telling me. The police, they think that the arson was planned. There's so much proof pushing towards that. The fact that the fire started in the chemistry lab where there are flammable substances, the fact that only that camera was broken, the lighter, everything," Evelyn said.
"I know how it seems but- I don't know," Levi said, unable to communicate what he wanted to.
"You say it was an accident but it started because you were smoking inside the building, where it clearly isn't allowed. More than just the building was damaged. Fortunately, nobody died but they were injured. You could get charged for reckless burning and then you'll have no choice but to serve jail time," Evelyn explained to him.
She waited for him to say something but he was at a loss for words. He knew he'd dug his own grave and he wasn't sure if there was any way out.
"Tell me, Levi. Did you plan this? Is Andrea your accomplice? Even if she is, why are you protecting her and taking the fall alone? That's not the case, is it? Does she have something against you? Is that why you are doing this? Because if that is the case, nothing is worse than jail time," Evelyn said. She had already made up her mind, the only thing she needed was for Levi to confirm it. If he did, she could look at this in a new way and get him out of trouble.
"You know, when you were here and I rushed to the bathroom before you told me about the police, I got a message. From Andrea. She was here, watching everything. If I go against her, I don't know what she'll do," Levi said.
"So I was right," Evelyn said.
"I never wanted to lie to you, I just don't know what else to do," Levi said. he knew Andrea wouldn't be back, not after the cops had barged into his house. It was too risky.
"You needn't worry, Levi. I'm here now," Evelyn said.
Something about those words made Levi's heart flutter. He turned to look away from Evelyn, not willing to show the smile growing on his face because of her. Even the very sound of his name felt different; ravishing.
"It's almost as if you take this case personally. You know, considering everything you did so far," Levi said, hoping for a specific answer.
"Don't flatter yourself," Evelyn said chuckling, "I'd do this for any client."
But he wasn't just any client.
