Chapter 1

The day was like any other Monday morning where everything ran smoothly.

Evelyn looked at her reflection in the long, circular mirror. Her hair was a perfect mix of unkempt and tidy which she ruffled lightly. She reached for the flawlessly ironed black suit that lay on her bed, picking it up as she walked into the shower.

Her hazel eyes felt heavy as she let the lukewarm water fall on her bare skin. How she'd kill for just five more minutes of shut-eye, but she would never break her religiously followed routine. After all, why change something which has never failed you before?

Ten minutes later, she was out of the shower, looking as fabulous as ever, but even so, her eyes looked lifeless. She made her way to the living room and a lone plate of toast resting on the ceramic table caught her eye. Someone was here.

"Good morning, love," Noah greeted her as he stuffed bread into his mouth.

"Morning, Noah," she greeted back as she sat on the leather couch, letting her body relax.

"Are you free today?" Noah asked expectantly.

She looked at him with a sigh. She didn't want to disappoint him each time, but neither did she want to go out of the way to do something she wasn't interested in.

"Sorry Noah, but I'm busy enough as it is," she responded, not looking at him.

"You should try making time for us you know. I do it all the time."

Evelyn bit her lip, fighting back the urge to argue. There was no point arguing; she knew he was right. He might even have more work than her but he was always there for her.

I wish I could do the same, she thought and got up from the couch.

"We'll discuss this later," she started, "I have to get to work."

"If you wait five minutes, I'll drop you," Noah offered.

"Nevermind, I can't fall behind," She said as she grabbed her black purse and rushed out.

Thirty minutes later, she was standing at the entrance of Turner Law Group. Unoriginal name, but it let the world know who owned it.

She walked in, receiving greetings from everyone present, which was not many. Not everyone liked to hide behind their workload as Evelyn Turner did.

She took her seat in her separate office and picked up the first file she saw. She peeked out of the glass doors, receiving subtle glares from the interns, but she didn't think too much of it.

It was much too common. What would people know about the effort she put to reach where she was? To them, she was just leeching off her parents' success and the only reason she was in an esteemed law firm was that her parents owned it.

There was a slight knock on her door and she quietly mumbled a come in. Addy, a seventeen-year-old intern who had joined three months ago came in with a steaming cup of coffee.

"Do you need anything else, Ms.Turner?" Addy asked.

"No, thanks Addy," she said and slowly sipped the cup of coffee. She wasn't really in the mood of drinking anything but she didn't want to turn Addy down.

Addy reminded her of herself, the way she did even the tiniest of things, hoping to impress everyone. Only, she got recognition and praise for it whereas Evelyn didn't. No matter her efforts, she was always her parents' daughter and nothing more.

It was the same case with Noah as well. He worked as a public prosecutor and Evelyn would argue that they were of the same skill. Others, not so much. To them, he climbed hills to reach where he was whereas she clung to her parents' back.

Maybe that's why I can't bring myself to spend more time with him, she thought. Now, she was just making excuses.

She exhaled calmly and rubbed her temples as she looked at the stacks and bundles of documents, all with the details of clients she still hadn't met. There was no point denying that she was overworked; even by just entering her office it was clear.

Slowly, she picked up the files one by one, contacting every number listed, and arranging to meet in the near future. Most of them only wanted advice on what to do next, which may seem like a humble task but it still cost quite a lot.

By the time she was done, an hour and a half had passed by quickly and her silver watch revealed that it was still 9:30 a.m.

She stepped away from her desk and walked to the main hall, where everyone was huddled around the small television. It was an odd sight but she knew investigating would only get her ugly glances from the others.

Bunch of hypocrites. As if they weren't slacking, but if I do it I'm taking advantage of my privilege, she thought as she walked right past them and into the cafeteria.

There was still a long list of things to do, and that wasn't including the checking of e-mails from defendants in need.

She sat on one of the long tables and buried her face into her palms as she waited impatiently for the cup of coffee she actually wanted this time.

After waiting for about twenty seconds, she slowly called out, "Can you please send it to my office?" for which she received a gruntled yes.

There was a time when she thought that this would be everything she wanted. A beautiful apartment, a loving boyfriend, and most of all, a job she loves.

And now, not even in her early thirties, there seemed to be no purpose to her life.

Her job doesn't give her the satisfaction she thought it would. It doesn't make her proud or happy.

Her coffee made it to her office about the same time she did. She took her seat again, determined to finish everything so she can reach home before Noah. And sleep.

She wound everything up by 4:54 p.m. and stared at the screen of her laptop. The only thing left was to check the e-mails, after which she could drive home and get the long-awaited nap.

It's not in the routine, but neither is winding up everything by 5:30, she told herself as she signed into the account.

Most of the e-mails had already been attended to, which she wasn't complaining about. There was only one unread e-mail, which came in just five minutes ago.

Her eyes widened as she saw the mail address, prompting her to open the mail quickly. Her eyes darted from left to right as she read every word with immense focus. It wasn't the most formal letter she ever read, but reading it brought a slight smile to her face.

This is exactly what I've been waiting for, she thought, her heart jumping in excitement. A number was typed toward the end of the letter.

Without taking a second thought, she whipped her phone out of her pocket and dialed the number as fast as possible. She waited patiently and almost jumped in elation when the call was answered.

She inhaled sharply and spoke in the most neutral tone she could muster up in a second.

"This is Evelyn Turner from Turner Law Group."

"I wasn't expecting such a quick response," the respondent said, his voice shaking.

"Mr.Coleman. I believe we have details to discuss."
