Chapter 140- A New Year.
(Hey guys, can any of you recommend a good enemies to lovers HP fanfic? Preferably marauders and not featuring Harry himself but Golden trio is fine also.)
After the ceremony and signing the marital papers, we both joyfully laughed our way home and spent many hours making gleeful comments about our new relation to eachother.
"Mrs Lupin." Remus opened the front door to me.
"Thank you, Husband." I curtsied before I entered, not being able to contain laughter.
This went on all day until the sky grew dark and we were soon to be expected to attend a New Years party at the Potters.
"Before we go," Remus began as we started changing our clothes.
"The box..." he lingered, referring to the wedding gift I gave him.
"Yeah?" I questioned.
"Does that mean James knew about us getting married today if he helped you with it?" Remus wondered. I imagined he was planning out what he was going to tell his friends.
"No. He thought he was helping with a Christmas gift." I revealed.
Remus nodded and continued rummaging through one of his draws for a pair of casual trousers.
"What made you think of it? The box?" Remus said, looking over his shoulder to me with curiosity.
"It's funny," I began.
"I had no idea you were going to gift me with something as beautiful as a dress that made me feel like Narcissa was with me." I smiled.
Remus smiled as if he knew what was going to be said next.
"But I thought you deserved a part of your friends with you, even if it was your decision to have a private wedding." I shrugged as if it was nothing, though it did require planning.
"I loved it." Remus smiled and went back to rummaging through his clothes.
A silence brewed between us, comfortable but full of thought.
"Have you thought about how we'll tell them?" I asked out loud. Knowing he had been thinking about it over the past forty minutes or so.
"There's three options. We wait until after the party. We tell before midnight or as midnight comes through. What do you think?" He asked.
"How well received do you think the news will be?" I checked.
"Well, Alice and Frank didn't invite any of us to their wedding. They got married abroad, remember? We all celebrated for them." Remus reminded me. Which was true, we all were thrilled for the couple and their news.
"Midnight could be a fun reveal!" I smirked.
"The fireworks, the appreciation and desire for all things new. That could work!"
Remus nodded and agreed. Shaking my hand in a way that solidified our plan.
*The Party*
"Come in! Come in!" James shouted at us as we walked up their front door, ushering us in from the chilled frozen air around us.
We rushed inside to match his enthusiasm and were greeted by two flutes of sparkling drink to begin the celebration of the night.
Remus wandered into the kitchen with the desert tray we had brought over to contribute, and I lingered around James.
"So?" He whispered excitedly.
"So what?" I looked at him wide eyed. How would he have found out?
"The gift? You never told me if my dear boy Moons appreciated it?" James asked and I almost sighed with relief.
"He loved it. Found it really touching. I can't thank you enough, again!" I said, as he threw an arm around me and escorted me into the living room.
"Just a warning," James began to mumble in my ear before I heard a familiar voice coming from the garden, followed by laughter.
All of a sudden the back door was pushed open by Marlene with Sirius following her, carrying a handful of logs for the fire that was beginning to weaken in strength.
"-and she's no longer vegetarian which I couldn't believe considering that one time...Arty." Sirius stopped what he was sharing with Marlene to address me.
"Sirius." I replied, hope laced in my voice that he wouldn't run off this time. That maybe we could hold onto him once again and celebrate together our good news and the new year.
He smiled at me before heading over to the fire to build it up again and with that smile the hope inside me was fed.
I saw a sliver of the man that existed before grief. On top of the warmth that had subtly returned to his face, he also looked like he was beginning to look after himself again in his appearance. He had kept the facial hair that he grew out, but had it maintained and had his long hair tied up neatly.
Marlene shot me a look across the room, something I thought could be interpreted as 'he's doing well!'.
James went over to Marlene to ask for her opinion on what radio station he should turn to throughout the night, or which one of his vinyl records to kick off with. She was more than happy to share her strong opinions about music and both of them started heavily discussing and planning out the music.
I wandered over to the fire, where Sirius was crouched in front of prodding with a metal poker.
I stood beside him, almost shuffling my feet trying to figure out how to begin conversation after he simply disappeared from our lives.
"I have a job interview in a few weeks." Sirius broke the silence, still looking down at the fire.
"Oh really?" I was taken aback by such an achievement and reflection that his mental health was beginning to take a turn for the better.
"At the ministry, actually." Sirius shrugged.
"Oh really?" I said again, in a more curious tone. I crouched to his level, eventually falling into a crossed seated position. Enjoying the warmth on my face and attempting to feel more connected to the conversation.
"Nothing interesting. I'd only be filing data, if I get it." He said bluntly.
"It'll be good to do something though. The caff hasn't been open for a while because of the weather, I miss it. It can be boring to spend each day at home." I said, referring to the cafe I worked at that had been closed due to low stock and bad weather.
"Good luck." I added earnestly.
"Thanks." He smiled.
There was a moment of silence between us until I could hear the familiar voices of Lily, Peter and Remus starting to join us all in the living room.
Sirius almost stiffened in his crouched position, before taking a controlled intake of breath and dropping his shoulders again.
I couldn't understand his reaction. Though it was definitely noticeable up close.
"- and I'm pretty sure we have mice again, Pete, so if you can chase them out for us?" Remus laughed as they all wandered in.
"Yeah no problem." Peter laughed back.
Remus' eyes darted to the back of Sirius' head, that still refused to turn around to acknowledge the rest of the group; or just Remus, he had probably already said his hello's to Lily and Peter.
"Lily told me you were back." Remus said in a cautious but friendly voice.
No one had to guess who he was referring to. Sirius finally turned around, a small smile appearing on his face; forced, although it didn't look like it.
"Yeah, got here last night." He simply replied.
"How long you staying?" Remus asked, coming closer to us both as the other began gathering around the record player.
"I'm not sure yet. I've planned to stay for the week but," Sirius shrugged.
"You should." Remus replied.
"Should what?" Sirius cocked his head to the side a little.
"Stay for the week. It'll be nice to all go out for a drink again, have you here with us." Remus smiled before then turning around and joining the rest of the group, James specifically.
I hesitatingly stood up and began slowly going other to the group too, lingering to see if Sirius was going to join. He took his time, but eventually did get up and follow.
The night went on, full of music, dance and laughter and perhaps too many glasses of cheap champagne.
After a few drinks, Sirius relaxed into the night and joined in on the jokes and friendly banter. I felt proud of him on the odd occasion I turned to check on him. He was looking and behaving similar again, the Sirius we all knew and loved.
The countdown was fast approaching, a new year incoming and I could tell Remus' excitement to reveal to the group that we both were finally husband and wife was start to bubble more aggressively than the drinks we all held in our hands.
I knew this because on two occasions throughout the night I was dragged into a spare room with him to confirm I still felt comfortable with sharing the news tonight, and going over what he wanted to say; practicing his delivery and grabbing me by the shoulders to excitedly (and yet, still gently) shake me with his brewing anticipation.
"Guys! Guys!" James screamed over the music and gathered us all together from separate areas of their living room, ending all individual conversations.
James beckoned us over to the radio he switched on, as he abruptly ended the vinyl record from playing with a scratching sound.
"It's time!" He threw his arm around Lily and pulled her into him.
We all beamed at each other, gathered in a half circle surrounding the radio.
"10!"
"9!"
"8!"
"7!"
"6!"
"5!"
"4!"
"3!"
"2!"
"1!"
We all screamed with celebration, turning up the sound of the radios party music that began to blare through the speaker.
Hugs and kisses were shared everywhere, between lovers and friends; paired with a chorus of 'happy new year's being exchanged.
James held his glass high above his head.
"It sucks that Alice and Frank couldn't be here but I'm so glad we're all here together. This year has been a bit shit for some of us," James paused.
"But next will be much better. There's only up from here and I'm so proud to call you all my people." James initiated a cheers, which we all complied with passion.
"What's everyone's New Years resolutions?" Lily asked curiously.
"Become a city girl again." Marlene nodded confidently and directed towards Sirius who seemed to be thrilled with the idea.
"Find a new job." Peter dramatically sighed.
"Yeah, me too." Sirius agreed, nodding. I smiled over at him knowing about his upcoming interview.
People looked at me but I knew Remus wanted to be the one to break the news, I wracked my brain for something as I hadn't actually given any New Years resolutions a thought.
"I maybe want to travel outside of the uk?" I said as more of a question. Remus looked surprised but considerate, as if he was saying 'we could do that!'.
"I want to start coaching quidditch again, actually." James jumped in.
"Remus?" Lily prodded.
"You first." He said.
"I want another baby." Lily revealed, James didn't seem shocked so they had obviously discussed it.
"We want to wait until Harry is at least one but we might start trying again next autumn!" She said excitedly.
We all congratulated their plans and got excited for them.
"I want to go on a honeymoon." Remus revealed.
"You have to get married first mate." Peter joked.
Remus looked over to me and smiled. A loud gasp escaped both Marlene and Lily's mouths.
"Oh merlin! Guys, really?" Lily covered her mouth and jumped up and down.
"You sneaky bastards! Congratulations!" Marlene laughed and threw herself at us for another big celebratory hug.
James congratulated us too, but he looked over to Sirius in an odd way. Perhaps similar to how I was checking in on him throughout the evening. As if to see he was still coping.
Sirius seemed frozen to his spot and his eyes fixated on the bubbles of his drink. His cheeks were becoming a little blotchy.
"Congrats mate." He finally said, pulling up his gaze with difficulty.
"I need a piss." He bluntly mumbled and removed himself from the room.
My gut instinct kicked in instantly. A pull in body telling me that I needed to rush after him, that he wasn't actually going to go use the loo. He walked away with such concentration, it was as if he was focusing on suppressing his true reaction to the news ... and I was still worried, confused about his current wellbeing.
The rest of the group stayed, oblivious. Except James who cleared his throat and distracted himself by refilling peoples glasses.
"I'm gonna go too," I whispered to Remus and he smiled unaware.
