Aretha Franklin was a child of Baptist minister who grew up in Detroit singing gospel music in church. Her voice eventually got her a contract with Columbia Records in 1960 but her talent being misused lead her to being signed with Atlantic Records in 1967. This was when her talent began to shine. She mixed her gospel style with funky Muscle Shoals musicians and became the Queen of Soul.
