FAMILY FEUD
The empty space seemed thick with static after the words, everything suddenly clicking into place in my mind. I'd come to learn something about my past, see the only blood relative I knew of that was left and maybe pick up where I never knew I left off. Until D'amato had spoken those words, I hadn't realized how much I wanted to have a brother again. How much I wanted to hear stories of us growing up, being carefree children before our parents turned us into lab experiments, bond over things I didn't yet know we had in common. I wanted to feel what it was like to have a sibling that cared for me as much as I cared for them, who was happy to have me in their life like I would undoubtedly feel with them.
In that moment, I realized it was something I'd already begun to have in a way; but it wasn't with Roman. It was with Jason. The need to find him and make sure he was alive drove even harder in my chest as I glared at my supposed family, wondering what Roman would do next.
There was no mistaking the ferocity on my face; I wouldn't sacrifice my life for him. Not willingly and for damn sure not without a fight.
"So that's why you wanted me here so badly," I said to him, closing the distance between us even more. I didn't care about the unknowns anymore. He wanted me dead and now the feeling was mutual. One way or another, only one of us was walking out of here tonight. "You don't actually care that I'm back except that it can save you. You didn't kill all those people out of revenge for me, you killed them because you thought they'd killed you."
The distracted look disappeared from Roman's face, his attention entirely on me now. His features morphed into something darker, his mind clearly working through a plan on how to handle the situations. My own mind was working on it too, wondering now more than before just how he'd killed everyone in CADMUS that night and if it was a way that would give me enough time to strike out at least once. It would take maybe a second for any plant life to answer my call before lashing out at him, but if his attack struck first there was no guarantee mine would land.
"I think you're missing a very key point here," Roman finally said, tone void of emotion. "You can't actually die. Not permanently, anyway. I think you've proved that enough so far, don't you?"
I thought back to Dick sending my blood to Bruce, his uncertainty that it may or may not be something I could do again. It wasn't something he seemed keen on finding out first hand and honestly, neither was I. I'd died more than enough already. "No, I don't actually. And something tells me that, even if I had, whatever is required to save you would be a more permanent end for me."
"Won't know unless we try."
"Guess we'll never have an answer then."
Roman's hands clenched into fists at his side and adrenaline buzzed through me, preparing me for a fight. I could almost feel the energy beneath my feet, beneath the cement, rumbling as the plants prepared to aid me. My nerves tingled under my skin, ready to react to anything.
The loud crash of broken glass echoed through the room and we both looked up in time to see it rain down from the high second floor above, paired with a dark figure hurdling to the ground. It took a few seconds to recognize the outline of the thick boots and sleek suit, but once I had the panic that ran its way through me was hard to ignore. It was lucky I was already prepped for quick reactions because my brain seemed to react before the rest of me could catch up. The ground shook with force as the green broke through the concrete, soaring out without direction and wrapping around Dick in it's own sort of embrace before he could smash to his end. I barely let out a sigh of relief as the foliage brought him to my side before my eyes flew back up to where he'd come from, spotting a barely backlit silhouette of someone looking down at us.
Even before he'd misted away and materialized before us, I knew it was Hurricane.
Feeling the heat of him next to me, I brought my eyes back to Dick, quickly assessing him for damage. There was blood smeared down his right temple to his cheek, a scratch on the opposite side, minor scattered cuts from the glass; but otherwise he seemed unharmed. His suit was still intact, no obvious or life threatening wounds that I could see, though he was breathing a bit more raggedly than I cared for. He stared back at me thankfully, his own eyes scanning over me for injuries. When he found none, I could almost feel the relief radiating from him.
"Did you find Jason?" I asked him quietly and he nodded once.
"He's with Gar and Conner. Told them to get him out of here, we'll catch up when we can."
"And the odds that they'll listen?"
Dick actually smirked a little. "Do you ever?" If it weren't for the two metas just a few feet away that obviously wanted us dead, I would've laughed.
Instead, I turned to them, a new energy coursing through me now that Dick was by my side. I didn't have to worry about him anymore because he was with me, and together we were a force to be reckoned with.
"You should've let him die, Emmy," Hurricane called out to me, blue eyes fixed on Dick coldly. "I was trying to be nice. He wouldn't have felt a thing if you'd just let him fall. I made sure to use enough force that he would've died on impact. A mercy I was only giving because of you."
"And now it's an unnecessary one," I declared. "Because if you try to touch him again, it'll be the last thing you do and I won't be merciful about it."
"You really think you could kill us both?" Roman scoffed, earning a surprised look from Hurricane. I didn't know what he'd expected from our sibling get together, but apparently me killing my twin wasn't it. "Let's be real, I could cause you more damage in a few seconds by killing your little boy toy there then you could with your plants."
"You think so? What happened to not betting against me?"
"Circumstances changed."
"You mean, you wanting me to sacrifice myself to save you but me deciding that's not going to happen," I countered.
This time the look on Hurricane's face was one of confusion, his attention no more directed on Dick as he looked between me and Roman. "What the hell is she talking about?" he asked my brother who'd turned red with anger. Dick took a step and angled himself slightly in front of me, immediately shifting into protector mode. From the corner of my eye, I could tell his were focused entirely on Roman.
"Wow," I laughed mockingly, deciding to push the situation further. The look on Hurricane's face was the most genuine I'd seen it yet, which told me all I needed to. The enemy of my enemy is a welcome distraction. "You enlisted Daniel and didn't even bother to tell him your little plan for me? What were you going to do when it was all over? Tell him something went wrong again?"
"Now is not the time," Roman said to Hurricane, completely ignoring my words.
"Tell me what she's talking about," Hurricane insisted.
"What exactly are you talking about?" Dick asked me under his breath, voice tight.
I decided to answer them both. "Apparently, Roman is dying and the only way to save him has something to do with me. But in order for me to help him, I would have to give up my life. As in never coming back again, Hello Mr. Reaper, dead. Don't feel too offended, Daniel, he wasn't planning on telling me that part either."
"Then how do you know?" Hurricane snapped, sparing a glance my way.
"D'amato," I told him. "He clarified the words that Roman seemed to have a hard time getting across. The look on Roman's face and annoyance at my rejection to the plan just solidified them."
"Don't listen to her, she doesn't know what she's talking about," Roman said calmly. "I just got my sister back—we just got her back. Why would I do anything to lose her again?"
Dick moved slowly, his hand reaching to his belt and fingers curling around what looked like a cylindrical tube. I recognized it as one of his smoke bombs and prepared move with him when the time came.
"I want to believe you but...why didn't you tell me what was happening to you? Why didn't you tell me you were dying, that you needed help?" Hurricane demanded, full suspicion mode now. He took a few steps warily away from Roman, careful not to leave his back open to us. "Why did D'amato know and I didn't? I was the one who told you she was alive—"
"We don't have time for this," Roman interrupted but Hurricane went on.
"I did everything I could to bring us all back together again—"
"Shut up!" Roman screamed, patience gone as he lashed out and grabbed hold of the back of Hurricane's neck. He pulled him in closer, Hurricane staggering forward, forcing them to meet eyes. "We do not have time for this. Pull yourself together and focus on your task. Kill him. Kill her Robin."
The words alone were enough to make me tense up, but the almost robotic turn of Hurricane's head and focus stare on Dick made it worse. Roman smirked from beside him, giving away his manipulation. If I thought I wanted him dead before, it was nothing in comparison to what was growing in me now.
Taking it as our cue, Dick released the smoke bomb, one hand grabbing mine so we could move as one and find cover. Unfortunately, the smoke barely spilled out of the container before a rough gust of wind blew it across the room, keeping us exposed. My jaw tightened as Hurricane kept his eyes fixed on Dick and one of my vines whipped out to strike him. Just as it would've hit its mark, he disappeared into fog again, the vine parting it without resistance.
The hairs on my arm prickled beneath my jacket with a pulse of electricity in the air and when I turned it was just in time to see Hurricane a few feet away, lightning crackling down to the ground from his fingers. He raised his hands to direct them at Dick and I just shoved him out of the way before bolts of electricity fled Hurricane's fingertips in his direction. The pillar behind Roman sizzled slightly, a casualty of the missed attack, and adrenaline coursed through me, renewed. The thought of Donna's death seemed to echo in my head as I realized I could've lost Dick in a similar way.
Anger flushed through me, foliage thrashing out from the ground around me and rushing at Hurricane. He didn't miss a beat as he fired more electricity at them, the burning smell flooding my nose as their pain lanced through me. I gritted my teeth through it, not caring as long as Dick wasn't the one being struck. For every plant Hurricane struck down, two more seemed to sprout in its place, leaving him no room to target Dick or anyone else. The green took every blow that would've killed us and while I felt each death inside me, I turned my attention back to my brother.
Roman was watching with wide eyes, though there was no fear in them. In fact, I was willing to bet he was more intrigued than anything, finding it as more proof that I was powerful enough to save him. When he realized my attention had turned to him, however, his shifted to Dick. I didn't have time to panic about what he would do before cried out in pain, collapsing to one knee and clutching his head with both hands. His face was flooding red, eyes shut tight against whatever pain Roman was inflicting, blood starting to spill from his nose. A cold fear pierced my chest, torn between throwing myself down at Dick's side and lunging at Roman. With my attention torn, the foliage battling Hurricane lost their focus too, not respawning at the same rate.
I felt the sting of the electricity singeing a couple of vines before a few volts escaped the diminishing fray and struck my back.
The leather absorbed the brunt of the hit, but I still felt sparks fizz through my body as I screamed, the impact throwing me forward so that my head slammed into a pillar not too far away. My vision went white, pain cutting through my skull and the taste of blood on my tongue. I was sure that at the very least I had a concussion and was probably hallucinating when I heard Roman's voice call out my name alongside Dick's.
Then I heard what followed. "What the fuck, Daniel, you're supposed to kill him not her!"
A drowsy giggle escaped my chest as I looked up and forced myself to better focus on the scene. Dick was still on the ground, wobbling to try and right himself and make his way over to me, Hurricane looking blankly at Roman, surrounded by shriveled vine remnants. The most surprising find of all though was Roman himself; looking haggard, blood running down his own nose similar to what I'd seen happen to Dick. His words about feeling weaker over the years rang harshly through my head, reminding me of his impending death should he fail to get me to surrender. Then an idea started forming.
The more he used his powers, the more effort he needed to exert and the less powerful he'll be. He must've already been weak if he hadn't killed Dick with whatever he'd been doing to his head. All I had to do was make him weaker, giving us more of the upper hand.
I rose slowly from the floor, drawing Dick's attention to sober him enough into standing entirely. He shifted lightly side to side but pushed past it to join my side. I looked away from him to face Roman.
"Please," I scoffed, hoping he would take the bait. "The two of you couldn't kill either of us even if we tripped and landed on some dynamite to make it easier for you. Just face it little brother, I'm not going with you. You're going to die, alone, and it's all your fault."
"We'll see about that," Roman nearly growled. He swiped at the blood under his nose, smearing it. His eyes quickly focusing once more on Daniel, just as I'd hoped they would. "Kill him and don't stop until this floor is covered with his blood. He hurt Emersyn, now you have to make him pay."
