Chapter Thirty-Four

Rob played hard. Adrenalin pumped through his veins. Sweat poured down his face. They won a short corner with two minutes on the clock. Time to see how the play with Shorty goes. He looked at the setup, took his stance with the ball and pushed hard and fast straight across the goalmouth. Shorty trapped and bam. Straight into the box.

The other team was stunned. It'd all transpired so fast they were still looking around wondering what had happened. Rob high fived Drew then Greg, Scott and Shorty. "Well done, man!"

He looked over at the grandstand. His mother and father were celebrating with some of the other parents. Tim Creally was shaking Mr. Bradshaw's hand. Shauna, Lizzy, Trin, and the girls were jumping up and down cheering. No sign of Becky. He'd been hoping she'd come and watch their first game. Thought she might have brought Linc with her since most of the junior boys were there watching. Maybe he'd made a mistake earlier telling her what was going on with him but she'd been so angry he thought it was because she had some feelings for him. What to do now?

Tim patted each player on the back. His face said it all. "Well done everyone! Great game!" He clapped his hands together. "Fantastic start to the season." Everyone milled around shaking hands and congratulating each other. Rob joined in. People he'd never met were praising him.

His father shook his hand. "Good game, son."

"Thanks, Dad." His mother threw her arms around his neck. Rob chuckled and whispered, "Mum. Embarrassing."

"I don't care." She kissed his cheek. "What are your plans for the rest of the night? Will you boys go and celebrate somewhere? The team is more than welcome to come to ours."

"Not this time, Mum." Rob smiled. "But thanks. I'm pretty sure Drew's got it covered." He gave her a squeeze.

"Okay. Don't do anything stupid." Sheila moved off to where Rob's father was talking to the principal.

Rob went into the change rooms for a shower. When he was finished, he sat on the cubicle seat and opened Google on his phone. He searched the white pages, typed in Bridgestone and found one in Jardine Street. Rob hit Google maps and worked out how to get there. He just hoped it was Becky's house because he needed to see her and sort things out.

Maybe he'd ask her to the movies. It was only seven thirty. If she rejected him, she rejected him but surely, he couldn't get much clearer than he had in the pool. Shit. Rob chuckled. He hoped she didn't think that was all he was after. Should he go and see her? Maybe he needed to give her time to take on board what he'd said. If she thought it was just sex that'd probably put her off.

No. He had to go and see her to explain that he wanted to take her out on a proper date. Rob packed his gear in his bag and headed out.

"Oi! Rob!" Greg was standing with his arm around Shauna's shoulders. "What are you doing now? We're all going to head down to the café to celebrate."

"Sorry. Can't. Maybe later."

Trin took hold of his arm. "Come. It'll be fun. You deserve to celebrate because you were amazing." She beamed at him and ran her hand over his back. "I will guarantee you'll have some fun."

Rob flicked his eyes from Trin's face to Greg and Shauna's. Trin was giving him a look. "Thanks. Maybe later."

"No worries." Greg raised his hand and moved off with Shauna. Trin pouted and started to follow them.

"Can we talk?" Rob took her by the hand. "I think we gotta talk."

"Sure." Trin giggled. "Of course we can talk."

"That thing." Rob looked around. "That thing that happened between us. It can't happen again, Trin."

She instantly stopped smiling. A look of anger flashed across her face. "You're calling it a thing. Really? You can't even say the word sex. It was sex, Rob. And pretty good if I recall correctly." She peered at him and added, "You think I'm trying to make it a permanent thing. Like I'm trying to get you to be my boyfriend." Trin laughed. "I think you've forgotten the last part of our conversation, Rob."

"I'm sorry." He put both hands on her the upper arms. "Shit. I'm sorry. I...I... Fuck, Trin it was great, okay." He ran his hand down her face. "I'm sorry I said it like that." Rob sighed. "Look, I really like you. I guess I'm not sure what you expect. Girls say stuff but mean something else." He smiled and said, "You're such a cool chick."

"But..." Trin put her hand on her hip and cocked her eye at him.

"There's no but. I just need you to know I've got it bad for Becky."

"I knew it!" Trin laughed. "I told Becky you did but she didn't believe me." Trin stopped laughing when she saw his stressed face. "I get it. Sorry. I wasn't laughing at you. I was laughing because I know she doesn't get it."

Rob smirked. "I know but I'm working on it." He cocked his head. "No hard feelings."

"No hard feelings." Trin chuckled, held out the hem of her skirt, and twirled. "Even if I did buy this dress to try to seduce you again."

"It's a great dress, Trin. Looks great on you." Rob laughed and ran his hand down her hair. "I'm sure another guy will think you look beautiful in it too."

"I know." She beamed at him, and then reached up and kissed him lightly. "Good luck with the Becky thing." Trin tweaked his nose. "If it doesn't work out there's still that line up, remember." She swirled around and gave him a wave.

He waved back, watched her go, and then headed out to his car.

Lizzy stepped out of the shadows of the grand stand and smirked.

Rob threw his gear in the boot and pumped the address into his phone GPS.

He drove slowly past the house. It was run down with lots of trees. He did a U-turn and parked across the street. Rob climbed the stairs and listened at the door. A T.V. was playing. Someone was home. When he knocked Becky answered. He smiled. "Hey."

Her face froze and her eyes widened. "You need to leave." She shoved him on the chest and attempted to close the door.

Rob put his hand on it. "I need to talk to you."

"No. Please go," she hissed and quickly looked over her shoulder.

A man's voice yelled from the back of the house, "Who is it?"

"No one, Dad. Wrong house."

Before Rob realised what was happening Becky was jerked backwards. A tall-harried man covered in tattoos stood in her place. "Who the fuck are you?"

"Ah... I'm looking for the O'Connor's. My GPS says they live in this house."

"Well your GPS is wrong, so fuck off."

The door slammed in Rob's face. He stood there stunned, and then heard the man say, "Is he one of your fucking boyfriends?"

Becky's voice came to him. "No, Dad. I don't know him."

Then the man. "You better not be fucking around, Becky." Something smashed.

"I'm not, Dad!"

Rob backed down the stairs. What the fuck? Stupid move. He hoped he didn't get her into trouble. Rob got back in his car and stared across at the house. He heard a door slam. Maybe he should go and check that she was okay. Rob waited but the house had gone quiet.

He started the car and thought about going to the café. He had a sick feeling in his guts and wasn't in the mood to celebrate. Maybe he should have asked Trin before he'd come to find Becky's house. He sucked in another breath and headed home. The juniors played tomorrow so he'd talk to Becky then.
