-B2- Chapter 66
After some time, staring at the black fish in dead silence, I raise my head back to the woman.
'What was I supposed to see in that mirror?' I inquire. The woman lets out a small mocking laugh.
'You can ask your friends and your little brother.'
'I'm asking you.' A soft sigh escapes the woman's lips as she raises her hand, and the two fish, along with the pond, vanish into nothingness. The pure white floor remains, as if nothing had ever been there.
'You're more difficult than I had anticipated,' the woman concedes as she takes another step toward me.
'I've heard that before.'
'What is your greatest wish, Celeste?' I cross my arms in front of me and look at the woman with raised eyebrows.
'My greatest wish?' The woman nods.
'I have everything I want.'
'You're lying,' the woman observes without much effort.
'You're not answering my question.' She rolls her eyes.
'The Mirror of Sins shows a person's greatest mistakes.' Now it's my turn to take a step toward her.
'If that's the case, why didn't I see anything?' The woman's bare feet hover over the stones as she moves toward the right wall.
'That is a good question.'
Elien sometimes gets on my nerves, Novak maybe even more so, but this woman is truly getting under my skin. In every corner I try to get her into, she finds a way out. I think we could keep this up indefinitely, but no one will win.
'You're not going to answer?' I continue. The woman laughs mockingly again.
'Wouldn't it be more fun for you to find out for yourself?' Observing, my eyes slide over the woman. Her nonchalant demeanor conceals every emotion she has, yet there is something in the distance that I only seem to place later.
'You're lying; you don't know either,' I conclude.
I had hoped the woman's demeanor would change, that she would show a sign of surprise, but nothing comes.
'Lying is forbidden within these walls.'
'Why?' I take another step closer, inspecting her white eyes.
'Lying often arises from jealousy, revenge, or greed.'
Now it's my turn to let out a deep sigh. This woman won't tell me anything I can use, so why am I even trying?
Alisha recognized the mirror.
I need to get to Alisha.
'Where are my friends and little brother?' The moment the question leaves my lips, the woman places her hand on the white wall. The uniform white reveals a new door.
'At dinner.' I suppress any surprise after those words.
The woman places her hand on the white doorknob before pushing it open. An enormous white space appears with an expansive white table in the middle, laden with food. The walls and floor are the same as in all the other rooms: pure white without blemishes. From chicken and potatoes to strange vegetables and even a whole pig with an apple in its mouth, everything is laid out on the table. The precisely eight white chairs are occupied by three people: Elien, Novak, and Alisha are sitting in the middle three.
'Hey Cel, where were you?' Novak's cheerful voice sounds as soon as he spots me.
I should be surprised by his good mood after what happened with the mirror earlier, but by now, I don't take anything here as the truth.
Elien also looks joyfully in my direction, and Alisha turns around to face me, though her expression is slightly less cheerful.
'Just exploring a bit,' I reply to Novak's earlier question as I make my way to the empty chair next to Alisha.
'You have to see all this food,' Elien says in amazement, reaching for the potatoes in front of him, but Novak manages to slap his hand away. Ignoring them, I look at Alisha, who stares at the table with a stern face. Silently, I take my seat next to her, waiting for what will happen next.
No sooner does another white door appear. With wide eyes, I look in amazement at the same woman I just spoke with and the three other nearly naked women. The three identically looking women have the exact same appearance as all the other nymphs, but their clothing is completely different. The once pristine white dresses have been replaced by a single piece of white fabric wrapped around the breasts and fastened with a knot at the back. A similar fabric hangs around their hips and drapes down between their legs, leaving little to the imagination.
Hip-swaying, the women walk in our direction while the woman I spoke to earlier remains standing. The scantily clad ladies walk to the empty chairs and take a seat next to everyone except me.
'Welcome, we're delighted to welcome you on this day, thank you for coming. To celebrate your visit, we've prepared this wonderful dinner for you. To ensure that this warm welcome goes exactly as you wish, our three most beautiful women are at your service all night. Make yourselves comfortable, and don't hesitate to ask for assistance. I wish you a pleasant night.' She turns around immediately and disappears before any questions or comments can arise.
For a moment, my eyes scan the situation: the table, the unknown scantily clad women, and the endless amount of food. The woman next to Elien has turned toward him and leans in his direction with a smile. Black eyes look in amazement over the woman's body.
I lean toward Alisha in my place and ask softly, 'What is this?'
'No idea, it seems like some kind of trance that goes on and off,' she mutters back. I look at her in surprise.
'What do you mean by a trance?' Her head turns in my direction, and only then do I notice that the abnormal blue doves seem less vivid than usual. My head immediately turns to Novak, and his red eyes also seem less intense than usual.
'Like when the world sometimes slows down,' is her response before her attention goes to the woman beside her.
Novak has just picked up his plate and started serving food, smiling as the woman next to him takes his plate from his hands. She begins to serve him with her buttocks directly in his view. The red eyes linger longer than I would like, and a feeling of jealousy creeps over me.
The moment I notice the jealousy, a cold shiver runs down my spine, and my hands start to tingle almost imperceptibly. Dazed, I look at my hands, and my jealousy disappears due to distraction, which also makes the strange symptoms disappear.
My head is working overtime as my eyes continue to scan the situation, looking for something that makes sense in my mind.
Lying often arises from jealousy, revenge, or greed.
As quickly as possible, I try to put all the events in order.
The crown in the mist, the mirror, the fish, the woman's offer and the conversation, the food, the women.
Lying often arises from jealousy, revenge, or arrogance.
Her words echo through my thoughts, unconsciously knowing that I can do something with that.
Revenge, she asked if I wanted revenge on my father and Christiaan.
Arrogance, she asked why I felt compelled to complete the list of a hundred, whether that was out of pride and vanity.
My head immediately continues along all the events, searching to see if my budding suspicion is correct.
Greed, the crown and her question if I wanted Yin and Yang's magic.
Gluttony, the food.
Sloth, the women who help us.
Lust, the clothing of the women and what it implies.
Jealousy, my feelings toward Novak and the woman.
The total white environment here, the lack of individuality in all the women, the lack of men, everything is sterile, boring, and without any distractions.
Sins, they are sins.
