Cat's Eye

Year 3,329 B.C., a new gem will be mentoring the imperfect diamonds. She is famous for being one of the only surviving gems of her type, and she is told to be very wise. The Diamonds file into the arena where their new mentor awaits them.

Hour 06:54 Day 1: I wake up in my bunker with the rest of the Diamonds. "Ugh, I thought Blue would sleep in and not go to training. We'll have to deal with her in our class making us look bad in front of our new teacher." I hear someone say in the mist of the chaos. I've slept in 4 minutes. We soldier gems are required to sleep a certain amount of time. I make sure I'm ready for training then we walk to the battle field. On the way someone pushes me down and snickers at me. I've always been different. I hope that our instructor is nicer to me.

Our assignment has been to find our mentor. She says it's a test, I'm not that good at tests though. She gave all of us brief descriptions on the information desk, now I have enough clues to find her. I'm faster when I work alone, also no one wants to partner with me. Since I'm smaller than everyone else I'm quicker too, and pretty soon find the tent in the middle of the maze and go inside. There I see a dark turquoise-skin gem with long braided hair meditating. She immediately opens her bright blue eyes; everything about her is agile and nimble.

"Well done," she says in a kind voice, "You're the first person to find me. Your next task is to figure out who I am." I scan her and her gem. It's nothing like I've ever seen before, but everything else gives me hints to her name.

"You're Cat's Eye?" I guess.

"Correct. I can tell you'll be one of my best students, now grab a cup of tea and we can wait for the others."

Hour 8:45 Day 2: Today we begin practice battles with the training holograms the pearls kindly set up for us. We all grab our swords and walk to our sections. The events from last night are still vivid in my mind. All of our training sessions had been completed for the day and I was actually smiling for once. Right as I'm about to go to bed with the others the diamonds crowd around me. "So you think you're better than us? You're the teachers pet, she doesn't actually like you! You are nothing other than a mutation!" They slam me into the wall and start hitting me and laugh at my pain. That night I cry silently so they won't make fun of me again. Their words bounce in my head making me worse in the fight than I already am. By break time I sit alone on the wall while everyone else is having fun.

"We need to have a discussion, Diamond," Cat's Eye says as she climbs up the wall with her staff-like axe.

"You have not been doing as well in your training as yesterday, and I sense there is something wrong. Please tell me what's on your mind."

"I can't."

"I believe you can. You can trust me Diamond, I am always here for you if you need me."

I just walk away and hide in my bunker the rest of the class time.

Hour 7:53 Day 5: I've been hiding for a while now, avoiding Cat's Eye everywhere I go. I feel kinda bad, I guess I'll go talk to her. I walk up to her in the training grounds; she looks at me with curiosity.

"Uhh, Cat's Eye. I'll talk to you now."

"I'm glad you came to me. We need to be able to trust each other." We walk to her tent where we first met. I tell her about the harassing and abuse the other gems have been thrusting upon me. Cat's Eye listens closely and pays attention to every detail.

"Diamond, I-I never knew such things were going on, I'm so foolish!"

"Things like that happened all the time before you got here." Cat's Eye stands up and looks at me.

"You are loved. I will be your friend, I will care about you, I will do anything to help you feel like somebody. Let's have fun!" And with that she takes my hand and we're off to do whatever it is that friends do.

Hour 11:58 Day 18: Cat's Eye is the best thing that has happened to me since I was put in this horrible training camp. We have a close relationship, and I don't even mind the awful things that get thrown at me. We eat lunch and talk and joke, I've never been happier.

Hour 17:26 Day 34: There's something strange going on that Cat's Eye isn't telling me. She seems timid and a bit worried, but she still acts as if everything is fine. Training is over for the day, and she disappears for the fourth time; I hope she trusts me enough to tell me what's going on.

Hour 19:45 Day 36: I follow her to her tent. As I look at her shadows from the outside it seems like she is rocking back and forth, and she is attempting to silently cry, but I can still hear her.

"Tell me what's wrong! You've been hiding something for days I'm worried about you." I say as I walk in. Cat's Eye jumps but then goes back to holding her legs. I sit down next to her.

"I'm running out of time," Cat's Eye says, "I need to inspire you, because once time runs out, I'll become a corruption or a broken gem."

"I don't- I don't understand,"

"Do you want to know why you don't see Cat's Eyes anymore? They were all killed! Or worse, they were corrupted. We all wanted equality, we cared about every single gem! The Diamond Authorities saw this as as revolution and destroyed every single one of us. White Diamond was the only one who cared enough to let me live for a couple hundred more years. That time is almost up. Just promise me please that you won't let anyone let you lose your kindness, I know you possess that. If you can save anyone, do it for me. Lastly, I want to tell you that when gems are fully corrupted they lose human consciousness and become animals, if I become one of them, take care of me."

"Cat's Eye... Please tell me this is just another test!" I say with tears in my eyes.

"Oh, Diamond. The time has come. Good, Bye." Cat's Eye glows as she retreats back into her gem. Cat's Eye's gem falls into my hands. I watch as glowing cracks form around its surface; for a few seconds nothing happens. Then the gem glows once more and a sleek panther-like cat formed.

"Cat's Eye," I say as tears fall down. She was the only one who understood and cared for me. "I'll, I'll take care of you now." I wrap my arms around her and sit alone crying.
