The Earth, 5,750 years ago; it was a promising site of a new Gem colony, but progress was being thwarted by a small, persistent group of rebels. A team of diplomatic Gems were sent from Homeworld to investigate. Among those Gems was Sapphire, a rare aristocratic Homeworld Gem, with the power to see into the future. Assigned to her were three Rubies, common soldiers, with a mission to protect her.
On the tallest level of the Cloud Arena was a gem named Diamond, Hope Diamond was her full name. Then, there was a common colonization gem planning on crashing said Cloud Arena.
"I hate this stupid sword" I murmured to myself. I was near the end of my training, and I was counting down the seconds until it was over. This day had been particularly hotter than any other. This probably was what made me so short tempered. I took my final slash at the training figurine when the rest of my class walked over to me. "Took you long enough" I heard one of them say under their breath. I have a training sword because I can't pull my gem weapon out yet. The rest of my class could use their gem weapons, so it didn't take them as long as it took me to be done with their training. "She was talking to you, clod". Insulted one of the other impure diamonds. This was fine, but they kept on tormenting me, the insults raged on and on, until the wall that protected me from my anger shattered. I was going to do the same thing to their gems, but cut short of just destroying 7 of my classmate's physical forms. I back up to see the damage that I've inflicted. "Wha- What have I done?" I said, with a heavy heart and heavy eyes looking onto the gems on the ground. "I- I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to" and then I see the faces of the ones who witnessed what I've done. I ran, ran as fast as I could to anywhere else on the Cloud Arena besides there.
"I never had to deal with this kind of gem technology..." I complained, getting scolded by the generator. I was working on a way to make the Cloud Arena explode into thousands of little bits of rock. I thought about how devastating that might have been to the gem economy "They probably got other Beryl's like me to do this anyways". I had just been almost done getting through to the generator's core when an impure diamond gem ran through and locked the door behind her, she didn't seem to notice me sitting on the cold floor fidgeting with a burning hot furnace leading into the heart of the Cloud Arena.
"That should hold them off." I whispered to myself. It was a dark room, only lighten up by a small kindling genera- Wait. "Who's there" I spoke, my eyes darting from side to side of the room. The generator's furnace wasn't supposed to be that low, and if it were, we'd all be evacuate by now.
The diamond can sense me. Figures, they're trained very well and have extremely strong senses, I too have been training, I taught myself to lower the amount of breathing I have to do to maintain my physical form. So, I went dormant, I shut off all unnecessary breathing and I blinked only now and then. I watched as she tried to make out shapes in this room. I'm lucky there's so much equipment in this room.
I knew where she was. I found her, but I didn't want to acknowledge her being there. Every now and then I lost her, but I could always find her. The only reason I could was because my eyes are different from any other gem's. They're fragmented, like broken gems and broken dreams. They help me see all that most can't see. I neared towards the furnace, quickly grabbed a coal and then threw it at her. She fell, but didn't make a sound.
I was in a state of woe. No gem, much less diamond, has ever seen me when I didn't want them to see me. I fell to the ground in a silent manner, I made sure my fall only made a little sound, like dropping a piece of paper on the ground. I sat there, with a burnt shoulder, cradling myself and trying hard not to cry, I'm used to hot temperatures, and the coal didn't even sting that bad, it was more of it shocking my extremely cold body and my angered thoughts toward being caught tampering with an engine fueling the entire ship of diplomatic Homeworld Gems. I plan to kill this diamond before she kills me first, I've had too many casualties involving missions like these, and I won't be one of them.
I walk toward the cowering gem in the corner of the room, she had now been hunched over crying. I only planned to sting the gem. Plus, the coals weren't even that hot. Now, I could easily tell what gem it was, she was a Beryllium. They're very common colonization gems... What makes me wonder is that she has no diamond on her back, normally, they have white diamonds crossing their back, and her entire outfit is more colorful than would be a normal Beryl's... she's a runt.
I could tell she was staring at me, deciphering how I'm not how I was designed to be, then again, she wasn't either... After all, she's a misshapen diamond, they're hard to perfect, but I'm a Beryl, which should be the easiest of all gems to generate, and somehow, by chance, I got the short end of the stick and got stuck being misshapen accident. As I she studies me, I activate my plan. I spring up and try pushing her to the furnace, but it only leads to me seeing that she was crying, well, not at the time, but before, probably while she first came in here. Dry tear streams plagued her face.
The only reason she even pushed me back a bit, and when I say a bit I mean an inch at best, is because she caught me off-guard. I wrapped my arms around hers, and switched positons and pushed her towards the machine, causing a tiny grunt to be heard from her direction. "What are you doing here" I asked sternly. She just stared back angrily towards me. She looked at me less like she was mad at me, but mad that she got captured. "Why are you trying to crash the ship" I inquired, but I knew the answer. It was probably because she didn't like that the diplomats were so careless about her gem type, or that she was trying to save earth, another one of those stupid stories.
"I don't know." I responded, looking directly at her, she was kind of shocked from this answer. "I just don't want people like you trying to destroy another planet. There's been too many planets janked by Homeworld. This Earth does not need to be another one." I can't believe I just told a diamond that. I mean even if she ISN'T one of the main four diamonds, she still has some of the most authority there can be. So if I let her go, more if she lets me go, she'll report me, and I'll have my gem shattered.
I let out a great sigh and went up to the door, and locked it, then, we talked, talked and talked and talked.
"Do you miss Homeworld"
"No. I'm free here, there, I'm a slave."
"Oh..."
"I was supposed to die here, you know, I was supposed to just die out from White Diamond not needing me, I was supposed to be crushed after I helped with the Sea Spire."
"That must be horrible on your head"
"It is"
"Why do you still support Homeworld, don't they still mistreat you? Aren't you still treated as if you're a Beryllium? Why don't you just run away from it all?"
"I want to, but I can't... I have a life here- "
"A life filled with you being teased by your fellow gems, do you really want to keep on living that kind of life?"
I don't know why I was trying to persuade her to stop siding with Homeworld, I think it was a mixture of me not wanting to be shattered and not wanting her to be abused more.
"No."
We were silent after that. She was still looking directly at me. She didn't say a word but she was waiting for me to continue. I didn't.
"That settles it."
"What" I said, with a playful tone.
"I'm pushing you off, and we're escaping here."
"I dunno"
"Come on, do you really want to stick around on this boring old ship? Let's have an adventure."
I laughed, she pulled me up and she lead me through the door and hugged me, I started losing all feeling in my legs, and then my chest, and then our arms... What's this? I – we – she – felt different. We, I – are? am? Different. I've never felt like this. This feels so amazing! Who am I? Who are you? What is this! I feel weird again.
And then we split. We fused, but I've never felt like that while fusing. I could feel myself going numb, and me becoming we and then becoming I, but not a "me" I, a whole different kind of I. Which I've never experienced before. All I can really tell, is that that I was better than any other kind of I I've been.
"That was..."
"Wonderful? Great? Amazing?"
"All of the above."
"Well, that doesn't change anything, let's get out of this diplomatic dump. We've got better places to be."
This time, I pulled her up more carefully so we didn't fuse, I don't think it would've mattered though, she was there, but not there. So it's not like it would've happened again right then. I looked at her, smiling, opened the door with nobody else to see, and we looked out the wide open world, which was waiting for our protection.
"Ready?" I spoke up
"Ready." I answered
And we ran towards the edge, and jumped together, I forgot to ask how we would get down without dying, but she knew, she knew how to stop it. She pulled out her weapon, an axe, grabbed my hand, leaned towards the spire, she hooked onto the ship with her axe, slowed us down, and then took out another axe, and the area between the axes began to glow, it formed a line and rope like area between them, and when she looked at me, raising the axe, which was also the hand I was grabbing onto, and somehow threw it at the ground at the same time. The rope like line stretched, and we slowly made our way down onto earth. Down and down we went, all we knew is that whatever was down there, no matter how terrifying.
We were Ready.
