Chapter 16 I won't give up on us
A/N: I'm proud of this chapter, I brought back some book one nostalgia so I hope you all enjoy that! <3 Flashback scenes are in italics Sorry the spacing is weird on this one >.<
As predicted it was a slow night at the bar, so it was giving Lyric some time to practice with her left arm. She grasped a bottle in her left hand and went to pour a shot and grinned when she was successful.
"Hah!" She shouted triumphantly.
"Getting better each time love. " Liam smiled.
"I'm trying. The physical therapist says I'm pushing myself too hard but I'm just trying to get back to normal. If I don't keep trying to use my left arm it could take a year before I get full movement and feeling back." She sighed. "I'm not willing to wait that long. I haven't been able to pick up my own daughter in weeks."
"I know it's miserable Lyric but Rome wasn't built in a day. If you push yourself too hard you may end up causing more harm than good." Liam offered.
"I guess.." Lyric shrugged and then watched the door as a bunch of people walked in.
"Where the hell did they all come from?"
"Looks like a bachelor party. I'm going to get more ice I'll be out to help you in a second." He squeezed her shoulder and disappeared into the back.
There had to be at least 20 men around the bar which wasn't much. She'd had worse crowds at the bar in New York. She started filling drink orders as quick as she could with the one good arm. The men were already tipsy, and was clear they had stopped at either Granny's or the Rabbit Hole or both before coming here and they were getting impatient.
"Come on.." One of them groaned causing the lot of them to get riled up. Lyric knew she should have ignored them but she couldn't. She grabbed a second bottle with her left hand and started working faster smiling to herself it was working she was actually doing it. She went to hand one of the men his drink and she got a sharp pain in her shoulder before her hand went numb and she dropped the glass spilling it on the mans white shirt.
"Oh my God. I'm so sorry." She went to and him a towel and he yanked it out of her hand
"You should be! What is the matter with you?!" He barked. As Liam returned with the ice.
"I.. I'm s-" Lyric stammered
"Y..youre w..what? Bloody stupid?" The man demanded.
"Hey!" Liam shouted and pulled Lyric behind him protectively.
"It was a bloody accident. You should apologize." Liam said.
"Liam its fine really.." Lyric mumbled trying to fight back the tears stinging her eyes.
"No its not. Apologize." Liam demanded the man.
"I'm sorry your bartender doesn't know what she's doing. She's ruined my shirt."
"Is that really a reason to ruin her night?" Liam asked clearly getting angry. Lyric stepped out from behind Liam.
"Liam honestly, he didn't ruin my night." She said.
"I didn't?" The man frowned and picked up his friends drink and splashed it all over her face. "How about now sweetheart?"
Liam had clearly reached his boiling point. He climbed over the bar at the man and punched him in the face before grabbing him by the shirt and slamming him down on the bar.
"Apologize to the lady." He growled. Lyric had never seen him so angry before. The man still refused Liam reared back his fist to punch him again
"Okay. Okay!! I'm sorry!"
"Very good. Now leave her a generous tip and get the hell out of my bar the lot of you!" Liam barked. The man took out his wallet and left a hundred on the bar before he and his friends got up to leave.
Liam looked at Lyric who was hiding her face with a towel trying to muffle her crying He took the towel and helped her dry her face.
"Sorry you had to see me like that love.."
"Its fine. Thank you.." Lyric sniffled.
"Let me take you home." Liam said.
"My shift isn't over.." Lyric said. "I'm fine."
"No, you aren't and Its Wednesday, its dead. I was thinking of closing down early before those idiots showed up."
"Okay, well I'm actually going to Killian's its around the corner from here I can jus-"
"You are not walking, Its cold out, and I don't know if those men are still around."
"But Li-"
"No." Liam said and crossed his arms.
"You and your brother are pushy as hell." Lyric huffed and took the hundred off the bar and opened the till and put it in there
"Get used to it." Liam smirked. "That money was yours."
"I don't want that man's money." Lyric sighed and grabbed her coat putting it on. Liam walked around shutting the lights off before he led Lyric to the door and outside and then locked up the door.

Killian was worn out to put it lightly, Symphony had been a little demon all night which was completely out of character for her, she was usually very mild mannered with him. She wouldn't sit still to eat dinner, she nearly drowned him while he tried to bathe her, and for the last hour she was running up and down the stairs instead going to bed like she was told.
So when Killian heard his piano being played, he automatically assumed that Symphony had managed to sneak past him into the room with the piano. He groaned and put his notebook down on the coffee table and walked down the hall following the music. The reason he mostly suspected Symphony was because the notes being played were sloppy and out of place, and flat out irritating to the ears.
"I've had enough of this Symphony. It is be-" He stopped short walking into the room noticing it wasn't Symphony at the piano at all. It was Lyric.
The piano was in the room just off the main hallway coming into the house so it wasn't hard for her to sneak in there unnoticed. He listened to her playing, She would play a bit of a melody and then her hand would flop and she'd hit a bunch of keys all at once and then she would pause for a moment and start again. It was heartbreaking to watch her struggle with what once used to be second nature to her, it was more so heartbreaking that every time she had to stop, he could see her back shaking as she cried.
"Lyric.. Darling." he said softly.
"I..can't do anything." Lyric mumbled. I can't work without fucking up, I can't hold my daughter when she's hurt, I can't even play music.."
"It's a work in progress, love. You will get there."
Lyric turned around and the expression on her face was that of defeat. She'd given up.
"I told you Killian, the day of my grandfathers funeral I deserve this. I was such an asshole to Jack that night, that whatever God is out there thought, well lets not only take her grandfather, lets take away everything else." She spat.
Killian approached her and was caught off guard by the smell of vodka.
"Lyric are you drunk?" He asked.
"No. I'm not. I spilled a drink on this guys shirt and he kindly picked up his friends vodka tonic and threw it in my face. Don't worry, your brother knocked the shit out of him." She said.
"Lyric, you don't deserve any of this. Your grandfather dying is not your fault and your injuries are not bad karma, you're putting way too much on your shoulders and you are pushing yourself too far." Killian said. Lyric didn't answer him she just looked away.
"I'm going to take a shower and go to bed. I'm tired." She said.
"Lyric, please I'm trying my best here, I don't know how to help you."
"I just want to be left alone for right now Killian.." Lyric muttered and walked past him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple days later, Killian was helping Liam set up Christmas lights at the bar.
"Hows Lyric doing?" Liam asked.
"Not good, She's just given up, She thinks that everything that's happening is bad karma, and she deserves it." Killian sighed.
"Grief does different things to everyone Killian, you shut yourself in your room for nearly a month when mum passed."
"Aye. I know, I just feel so helpless. Its killing me to see her this way, and its affecting Symphony too." Killian said as he hung up a strand of lights. "When she was upset, Music was her escape. It was her coping mechanism but she hadn't played in so long so she was already out of practice before the accident and it was just pitiful watching her play honestly Liam I just wanted to sit down and cry with her."
"Hm, If only we knew a music teacher who could maybe teach her how to play again." Liam smirked.
"Are you suggesting I teach Lyric?" Killian asked.
"You? No. I was talking about Robin. Of course you, you Git!" Liam said and shoved him playfully. "You taught her once, you can teach her again."
"She was already steps ahead the rest of my students when she came to Storybrooke. I didn't teach her everything she knew Liam. I just helped her polish her talent." Killian sighed.
"Aye, but right now she's at square one and you were a hell of a teacher Killian, she's said so herself. I'm sure you'll come up with something to get her out of this funk.."
On the way home Killian had thought a great deal about what Liam had said. When he got home he walked into his office and opened the closet up and pulled down a couple of boxes looking through his old stuff from when he was a teacher, he raised an eyebrow and picked up a pair of glasses out of the box and turned them over and smiled, It was a pair of Lyrics old glasses he'd almost forgotten that when they first started seeing each other she left a back up pair at his house just in case, memories of easier times started flowing through his brain but he kept coming back to a couple particular memories of Lyric being the stubborn student she was.
The first couple of weeks of being back in Killian's class seemed to go okay, it was a little awkward at first not making eye contact but She knew the second she looked into those eyes, It would be game over. Today, however she was having a little trouble with the piece she was trying to play. It didn't help that she was trying to play on piano instead of guitar. Piano was one of her weaker points and that's what Killian wanted them to focus on this week, so here she was looking like an idiot cringing every time she'd hit the wrong key before she banged her forehead into the keys out of frustration.
"You look like you could use some help." Killian said walking up behind her.
"No, No.. I'm good. I just haven't played piano in a while." Lyric said and shrugged. Killian looked around the room to make sure no one was really paying attention.
"Lyric, if you need help it's what I'm here for." He said. "I teach, it's what I do."
"Okay. I guess I could use some help. with this part right here." She said and highlighted a part of the sheet music in front of her. Killian chuckled
"You haven't played piano in a while and the first thing you pick is Chopin? I admire your enthusiasm but that is just setting yourself up for irritation. Start small." Killian said.
"My brain doesn't do small. my brain does go big or go home." Lyric said and smiled to herself. "and I don't think I'm getting where I need to go by playing Row Row Row your boat."
"If you insist." Killian smiled. "May I?" He asked. Lyric nodded and scooted over on the bench thinking he was just going to sit beside her and show her what she needed to be doing but instead He stood behind her and put his hands on hers moving them where they needed to be.
----------------------------------------------------------
It was the last day of school before Thanksgiving break. Lyric and Will had been dating for three weeks, and she still felt nothing when he touched her, or kissed her. Nothing felt right and with everything going on in her head, Lyrics inspiration was taking a hit and she was struggling big time with her assignment for Killian's class. She went by the music building after school and walked in. Killian looked up at her.
"You do realize that when the final bell rings, you are supposed to go home?" He asked with a small smile. He was making this whole thing seem so easy. Lyric was falling apart and here he was smiling like nothing was wrong at all when everything was wrong.
"I know, Its just I'm having a lot of trouble with my piece and I wanted to see if I could work for a little bit in here. The acoustics are better here than they are at home."
"Sure, I'll be here for another hour. What are you doing your piece on?" He asked.
"Guitar." Lyric said.
"I think you should go with the Piano.."
"But I'm not as good at Piano." Lyric said.
"Ive told you before, you do much better when you challenge yourself."
"I'm going to stick with the guitar. I've already wrote half of it for the guitar." Lyric said and sat down.
"Suit yourself." Killian said and walked into his office.
I will Mr. Know it all.. Lyric thought and got out her guitar and her notebook and got to work.
Killian sat in his office listening to her play and then mumble in frustration, over and over again until he couldn't take it anymore. The teacher in him was going nuts. He walked out of the office and sat down beside Lyric. "I see what you are trying to do but try this instead." He said and put his hand over hers on the fret-board moving her fingers where they needed to be. The second he touched her hand her whole body almost jolted. Everything she had been wanting to feel with Will she was feeling right now and all he was doing was touching her hand and she should have stopped him but she couldn't. She craved this feeling and it would almost make the hurt that she would inevitably feel when she was home and he was gone worth it. He guided her hand up and down the fret bar as she strummed. She smiled as they were once again making music together.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyric didn't understand what Killian wanted with her, but she was told to see if her parents could keep Symphony for a few hours and to come over, and he wasn't going to take no for an answer. So Sarah was driving her to Killian's while Darren kept Symphony and Quin entertained.
"I have to admit, this feels like you are a teenager again." She smiled.
"I don't know if that's such a great thing." Lyric mumbled.
"It makes me feel younger, it's a wonderful thing." Sarah giggled and pulled up in front of Killian's house.
"You know... I think we all might just move in here. Its huge." Sarah said
"Its alright." Lyric shrugged. Sarah just gave her a condescending look.
"Go, whatever he wanted must be important if he asked us to keep Sym." She sighed and smiled.
"I'm sure he'll bring me back. So don't wait up." Lyric said and then sighed. "God it does sound like i'm a teenager again.. I need to be able to drive myself again." She mumbled and got out of the car shutting the door and walking up to the house. She twisted the knob on the door and let herself in.
"Killian?" She called. "I'm here."
"In here love." He called Lyric walked into the room with the piano and looked around. He'd brought a whiteboard into the room and there were piano scales drawn on it. Killian stepped out from the closet in the room and brought some music books over and set them on the piano.
"Fashionably late as always Miss Mckenna." Killian winked.
Lyric raised an eyebrow.
"Is.. this some kinky student teacher role play thing, because if it is, you should have let me know and I would have at least dressed the part." Lyric smirked. Killian froze up for a moment and then cleared his throat.
"Perhaps another day love." He said. "Have a seat." He said and gestured towards the piano bench. Lyric hesitantly sat down and Killian handed her a book. She read the cover and scoffed.
"Piano for beginners? This is insulting."
"Just hear me out, Lyric." Killian sighed. "I can't stand to see you miserable anymore. You can't play."
"Well not because I forgot how..." Lyric mumbled.
"Not exactly anyways, Mentally you remember how to play, but physically.." He said and held her left hand in his
"your hands need to get used to the movements all over again, so its as if you've never played before. I think I can help you but you have to trust me, and we have to start from scratch so your fingers can get used to the feel of the piano again and if you want we can work on guitar too whatever makes you happy, whatever brings my Lyric back because I miss her and in order for us to work, I need her back. Symphony needs her mother back."
Lyric's eyes welled. "Are you sure you even want to do this?"
"Aye." Killian nodded. "You've given up on yourself but I'm not giving up on you, I'm not giving up on us. So what do you say?" Killian asked. Lyric nodded and wiped a tear from her eyes.
"I'd say that sounds good Mr. Jones." She smiled
