Chapter 13 Glass In The Trees

A/N: No Gif for this one sorry I couldn't find one i liked.
Sorry for the angsty cliff hanger!

Lyric was helping her father peel potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner. Her stomach was turning at the thought of having to spend any amount of time at the same dinner table as her grandfather after what he had done.
"When is the dark lord arriving?" She sneered.
"Your mother is at the airport to pick him up" Darren sighed. "I know you are unhappy with Jack but try to keep things civil, Symphony loves him."
"Only because she doesn't know he's evil." Lyric muttered.
"Grampa Jack is evil?" Symphony pouted as she wandered over to the table. Darren narrowed his eyes at Lyric.
"No. He's not evil Sym. Keep out of the kitchen." He said shooing her away and then looked back at Lyric.
"If you don't quit, you are going to sit at the kids table tonight."
"I was actually thinking.. Of skipping this one." Lyric shrugged.
"Oh No you don't. I don't care how old you are you don't skip Thanksgiving. Don't even try it. I will track you down. Even Killian is coming."
"Dad!" Lyric hissed.
"What? I thought you two were going to start over? Did I miss something?" He asked.
"No.. its just I was hoping to use him as an excuse not to be here. I was going to take Sym and we were going to have dinner with Liam and his wife." Lyric sighed.
"No such luck for you. Killian agreed to come tonight." Darren smiled. Lyric sighed heavily and continued peeling potatoes. The door opened and Killian stepped inside.
"Daddy!" Symphony squealed.
"Hey you." Killian smiled at her.
"Whatcha got?" Symphony asked standing on her tiptoes trying to see in the bag in his hand. Killian pulled out a bottle of sparkling grape juice.
"Grape juice." He smiled.
"Mommy! Daddy bought grape juice!" She yelled and latched onto Killian's leg like a little monkey as he walked into the kitchen and looked at a frazzled Lyric.
"Don't worry Mommy, I brought you grape juice too." He winked and pulled a wine bottle out of the bag.
"My hero." Lyric smirked.
"I try." Killian grinned.
"I hope you brought some for the rest of us." Darren jabbed.
"You joke." Lyric said and stood up looking at her phone. "But, mom just texted me and said she picked up Jack and is on her way home. This will be gone long before dinner." She said and picked up the wine bottle.
"We're just going to hide this until dinner." Killian said and took the wine bottle from her.
"I don't know how I feel about the two of you ganging up on me all of a sudden." Lyric mumbled.
"Get used to it sweetheart. Killian and I will be spending a bit of time together." Darren smiled.
"Why other then your creepy budding bromance?" Lyric asked.
"I've got a few mates that are coming in and we're going to try to make some new music. Your father is going to record it for us."
"Like.. a band? You have a band?" Lyric asked.
"Aye. well did..ages ago. You should know, you had Robin as a teacher in Juilliard he never usually shuts up about our 15 minutes of fame." Killian smirked.
"Robin? My hoity toity piano teacher was in a garage band?" Lyric laughed.
"Whats so funny? Your mother and I were in a punk band." Darren grinned.
"Yeah. I know, you showed my first boyfriend a picture of your mohawk and he ran away." Lyric smiled.
"Mr. Mckenna you did NOT have a Mohawk." Killian chuckled.
"Oh. Yes. Yes he did. He had a mohawk until I was 5." Lyric groaned.
"You thought it was cool. Don't lie." Darren smiled. Lyric narrowed her eyes at her father but smiled anyways.
"So since you are getting the band back together.. Are you growing your emo bangs back out?" Lyric asked and rested her chin on her hand grinning at Killian.
"You hated my emo bangs." Killian said.
"Secretly, I kinda liked them." Lyric shrugged and then turned around and looked at Symphony who was sitting on the floor with a plate of cookies she had snuck off the table when no one was looking. She looked up at Lyric with guilty eyes and a chocolate smeared grin.
"Oh no." Lyric groaned
"What?" Killian asked stepping further into the kitchen and then laughing. Lyric slapped his shoulder and he cleared his throat trying to keep a straight face Darren sighed.
"Your mother is going to kill all of us she was up all night making those cookies." He said and hurried over taking the plate of remaining cookies while Lyric picked Symphony up off the floor holding her out to avoid getting chocolate on her clothes.
"I'll take this." Killian grinned taking the squirming child from Lyric to go and clean up her face and hands.
"Sorry Dad." Lyric sighed and tried to help him clean up the kitchen.
"No, its all good. I'd swoon over Killian and his emo bangs too." Darren smirked.
"I was not swooning!" Lyric protested.
"Your eyes were practically in the shape of hearts dear. Its okay. You don't have to hide it. You love him. Its good I think maybe settling things for good with your grandfather tonight AFTER dinner, will finally close this awful chapter and you and Killian can move on and start over and be the family that I know you want to be." Darren smiled.

Dinner was awkward, Jack certainly did not expect Killian to be there. He hadn't really spoken to Lyric in the past four years and Lyric now figured that was because he felt guilty. He loved Symphony, and Symphony loved him. Ariel decided to break the silence.
"So now that you two are back together what are your plans?" She asked Lyric.
"Uhm.. well we are just taking it slow for now. Don't really want to rush things." Lyric replied and and took a long sip of her wine.
"So no wedding bells for christmas then?" Eric grinned. Lyric kicked him from under the table.
"Ow!" He glared.
"Bump your knee on the table again Eric?" Lyric smiled.
"Never a dull moment with you two." Sarah sighed and looked over at the kids table to make sure Symphony Quin and Melody were getting along and eating.
"Look at that, the children are more well behaved than you two." Sarah said and grinned.
"It wouldn't be a holiday without at least one of them hurting the other." Darren laughed. Lyric looked over at Jack who was eating silently.
"You okay Dad? You haven't said a word." Sarah asked.
"The crow he's eating must be tasty." Lyric muttered.
Everyone stopped and looked at Lyric.
"What? The man has said something insulting to me every year since I was 13 So when I finally turn it around on him I'm the bad person?" Lyric asked.
"Now is not the time Lyric." Darren said.
"No, Darren if she has something she'd like to get off her chest let her." Jack said.
Darren pinched the bridge of his nose, growing up Lyric was the quiet kid, didn't fight much with anyone in her young adult years, somewhere along the line she had flipped a switch.
"No. We are not doing this right now. The kids are in the room." Darren sighed. Lyric went to speak but Darren put his hand up and gave her the scary dad look that made her shrink down in her chair.
"Fine." She mumbled.
Killian reached down and gave Lyrics hand a squeeze under the table.
"Where are you working now Lyric?" Jack asked.
"She manages the bar my brother and I own." Killian said. Truthfully Lyric was just the bartender but Killian was trying to diffuse a situation quickly.
"Oh, so the music thing didn't work out then?" Jack asked. Killian could feel Lyric start to shake with anger and Darren knew that an explosion was inevitable at this moment.
"No, but it wasn't going to either way. You would have made sure of that." Lyric snapped.
"Lyric. Not. Now." Darren hissed.
"No. I think now is a good time to just let it all out." Lyric said. "Why don't you tell your great granddaughter, who idolizes you why her father missed out on four years of her life? Why don't you tell everyone what you did you fucking snake!" Lyric spat. Symphony started whining and putting her hands over her ears at the little table next to them. Killian stood up and walked over and picked her up taking her out of the room. Sarah and Ariel followed in suit getting the other two kids out of hearing range. Jack looked genuinely shocked by Lyrics outburst.
"Lyric you have been through a lot this year, maybe you should just take a second.." Eric suggested.
"Everything I have been through is because of him! If he hadn't stepped in, Killian and I never would have broken up in the first place. Symphony would have known her father from the start and Anna never would have been in the picture at all! I would still be pregnant with our second child. Everything horrible that has happened in my life for the last four damn years is all because of YOU!" Lyric shouted turning to her grandfather. Darren stood up and pulled Lyric away from the table.
"You need to calm down." He said leading her towards the door. "I get it, your pissed, hell I'm pissed off for what he did to you but you can't just start screaming like this." He said and took Lyrics coat off the coat rack.
"Step outside, cool down and come back in when you are ready."
"I didn't want to do this at all because I knew! I knew he would say shit like this to get me upset! He always does."
"Okay, now you are screaming at me. Outside." He said and opened the door.
"I'm 23 dad you can't just put me in time out!"
"You scream at me like you are right now and I don't care if you are 40. Outside." Darren snapped. Lyric glared at her father and put her coat on and stormed outside. Darren walked back to the table where everyone was sitting back down and for the first time since he had known Jack he saw remorse on the old man's face.
"Where is Lyric?" Sarah asked.
"I made her stand outside and cool off." Darren said.
"Darren its freezing out there and the snow is getting bad!" Sarah said putting her hands on her hips.
"She'll only be out there a few minutes Sarah shes on the front porch." Darren sighed.

Everyone had ate and Lyric still had not come back inside. Killian watched Jack playing with Symphony and found it hard to believe that, he was the same man who had tore him and Lyric apart.
"Why did you and mommy fight?" She asked him. Jack sighed heavily.
"I wasn't a very nice man to your mother a few years ago and I made some mistakes that I will never fully forgive myself for, Sym. I thought I was doing what was right for my family at the time. But I've since learned that what I feel is right, isn't always what is right."
Symphony nodded. Killian knew she didn't understand much of what he was saying but she acted like she was holding onto every word he said. Sarah stepped up behind Killian.
"Why don't you go see if Lyric is ready to come inside? The weather is getting really bad out there they're starting to close down roads." She said. Killian nodded and stepped outside figuring Lyric was just on the porch. She wasn't. He stepped off the porch looking around the snow covered yard and around the side of the house and he tried to call her phone but he wasn't getting a signal. He sighed and walked back inside.
"Shes not out there." He said.
"What do you mean she's not out there??" Sarah asked
"She probably went for a walk I'll go find her." Killian said he knew she couldn't have gotten too far.
"No, I'll go." Jack said grabbing his coat.
"Dad no, the roads are getting bad and you don't drive well at night." Sarah said "Let Killian go He can see better than you."
"No, its my fault, I'm going to go and find her. I think we should talk anyways." Jack said. The old man was as stubborn as they came and no one was going to be able to stop him.
"I come grampa Jack?" Symphony asked.
"No darling you stay here." Killian said picking her up.
"But I want to find mommy." Symphony whined.
"Come on let's go get more of those cookies. Yea?" Killian smiled trying to distract her which worked as she nodded and grinned at him.
"Be safe out there Jack." Darren said. "She couldn't have gone far, if she's not around the block come back and I'll go out."
"Sure" Jack agreed but they all knew that wasn't going to happen.

Lyric had to get away from the house for a bit. Just sitting on the porch was not helping so she started walking, which she knew wasn't the best idea because the snow was falling faster, and the coat she wore was doing very little to keep her warm. She had somehow managed to walk all the way from her home to the clock tower and she could see police putting up road blocks everywhere because of the ice.
"Lyric!" She heard the voice but didn't believe it. She turned and looked at her grandfather who was driving her fathers car.
"What are you doing out here?" Lyric asked. "You can hardly drive as is!"
"I came to get you. Come on."
"You really shouldn't have. I'd rather walk back home." She snorted.
"Lyric get in the car." Jack said.
"No. Just go home." Lyric said and turned away.
"I drove all the way out here to talk to you, now you're getting in the car or your about to see a nearly 80 year old man pick you up and put you in the car." Jack warned her.
Lyric cringed and she did not doubt that he would do it. He was a tough son of a bitch. Lyric sighed and turned back around and got in the car.
"Just.. drive us home. I don't want to talk."
"Fine. Don't talk..just listen." Jack said.
"I don't owe you anything. You screwed me over. You screwed Killian over and you screwed Symphony over. I owe you nothing."
"I Know you don't, but we're stuck in the car for the next 20 minutes so what else have you got to do but listen?" Jack asked.
Lyric rolled her eyes.
"I know that you and I have not seen eye to eye for a very long time and I have made terrible mistakes, I realize that now and I don't even know that I have enough time left on earth to earn your forgiveness Lyric. I don't know that I even deserve it."
Lyric looked at him. For the first time seeing past the tough old man and seeing his hands tremble on the steering wheel as he spoke. He looked worn down, and rough. Weighted down with guilt.
"I've made you feel like you were nothing but a disappointment to me but that couldn't be further from the truth. I knew from the moment you were born you were going to be special, and I just didn't want to see what happened to your parents happen to you but you proved to me time and time again that you were stronger, you were independant and you weren't going to let anyone stop you from doing what you wanted."
"I just don't understand why you did it." Lyric said.
"I was selfish and I couldn't stand the idea that your teacher who should have known better was in a relationship with you. I wanted him out of the picture and i didn't care that it hurt you at first. But every year just seeing that spark drained from your eyes was horrible and I couldn't believe that I did that to you, and Symphony.." Jack's eyes welled with tears.
"Symphony doesn't understand..She loves you." Lyric said.
"I know and for that I am thankful.. I just wish it wasn't too late to fix everything I've done to wrong you."
Lyric sighed. "Its not too late. We can work on-" Lyric looked towards the road as she was speaking and noticed a deer walking out in front of the car.
"Grandpa!" She yelled. He swerved out of the way and the car slipped on a patch of black ice and flipped and rolled off the road into a ditch.
