TWELVE
"You have some nerve." Ghost grumbled as he got in line behind Belle, watching as she put some food down on her tray from the food line. He had received many double glances as he had cut his way through the line, but he didn't care, more focused on getting to her side. He had been trying to talk to her for the last few days, but she always seemed to have an excuse. And she had moved their sessions three times within the last week. It was like she was ignoring him on purpose, which Ghost knew she would.
"Good morning to you too." Belle said without looking up, grabbing some of the fruit from the line as she continued to move with the line. Ghost didn't grab anything, continuing to walk after her. Ghost rolled his eyes, ignoring the double takes some people were giving him as he simply lingered at her side. And he didn't even have to turn his head to see how his friends were watching the two of them from across the mess hall.
"Don't give me the good morning shit." Ghost said with a little scoff. He knew she was pretty much blowing him off for nothing, or at least for some reason she wasn't saying out loud to him. But for once Ghost needed to talk to her, needed her to sign off for him, but she was doing everything in her power to ignore Ghost.
"You're in a bad mood." Belle says, pointing out the clear obvious. He grunted a little, keeping his arms crossed as they walked together, or more like he followed after her as she tried to get ready for the day. Belle already had her schedule filled, more things popping up on her calendar with every passing day, and she didn't need him to add onto that growing list. Ghost huffed a little, glancing at the people who were behind them in line before turning his attention back to Belle again.
"You've rescheduled three times on me in the last week." Ghost grumbles, following after her and watched as she grabbed a bottle of orange juice. She didn't look at him, continuing on her normal morning routine. Just with Ghost accompanying her now.
"Have I?" Belle asks, knowing full well that she had canceled on him time after time but acting as if she hadn't. She avoided his gaze, not having to look up to see the frustration in his eyes. Ghost knew exactly why Belle was avoiding him and Belle knew just as well why he had been trying to get her alone. And she wasn't going to just fall into his trap.
"How am I supposed to get back on the field if you won't clear me, Isabelle?" Ghost grumbled angrily, following after Belle as she moved to sit at a table with a handful of other soldiers, she'd made friends with. Ghost grabbed her arm gently and tugged her to a free table away from people, not letting her slip away again. Belle gave a little huff but didn't fight back against him pulling her towards the table away from the others.
"I'm sure you'll figure it out." Belle said, not moving to sit yet. Ghost gave her a small look, pulling out one of the chairs for her to sit and Belle glowered at him. She gave a huff before sitting down and Ghost moved to sit next to her.
"You're just being petty now." Ghost said as he took the seat next to her, moving his chair closer to her and ducking his head to keep their conversation between them. If she wasn't going to talk to him in her office, he was going to try and at least make her talk to him now. Belle focused on the food in front of her, taking a bite from the meal she'd been served and avoiding his gaze still. Ghost huffed, staying close to her, feeling his teammates' eyes on them. "Don't ignore me." Ghost nearly whispered as he stared at Belle, moving her tray further from her and Belle let out a breath as she sat back in her chair.
"You clearly are not stable enough to go back to the field." Belle sighed out, her eyes finally meeting his and Ghost frowned at her words. He was stable, more then stable and he was annoyed that she was even trying to play the unstable card. Belle and Ghost both knew she had cleared Soap and many of the others back on the field, but she was holding back on him.
"Jesus Christ Isabelle." Ghost groaned out of frustration as she was clearly bullshitting him.
"And I think you need a healthier outlet for whatever anger is going on," Belle continued on with whatever speech that she was going on with. Ghost rolled his eyes, his arms still resting on the table as she looked back at him. They were silent for a moment and Ghost grunted as she was clearly waiting for whatever he had to say next. Ghost tore his eyes away, watching as a group of base nurses wondered across the mess hall, his eyes lingering on them a moment longer than they should've.
"I have plenty of healthy outlets." Ghost said with a huff, the corners of his mouth twitching upwards, and Belle followed his gaze. She rolled her eyes as she understood what he was getting at.
"I'm going to ignore that comment." Belle informed him with a little furrow of her eyebrows, not even wanting to hear anything else that was about to leave his lips. Ghost glanced back at her, looking away from the nurses who were finding themselves a table across the mess hall. He rolled her eyes when he saw her try to pull the tray back towards her, Belle's attempt to ignore him not going unnoticed.
"Just sign off on this mission." Ghost grumbled, pulling the tray back and pushing it towards the other side of the table, out of her reach for the time being. Belle glowered at him for holding her meal hostage in order to get her to talk to him. She rolled her eyes and met his gaze again, deciding to humor him.
"Why?" Belle finally asked with a huff and Ghost almost smiled when he realized she was at least willing to listen to what he was saying. It meant he was a step closer to getting her signature for the upcoming mission.
"Because I said so." Ghost tried playing the cards he'd usually use when talking to others. But Belle only gave him a half irritated look and Ghost knew it wouldn't be that easy. She was so incredibly annoying to work with. "Because I've been chasing this guy for weeks and we finally got a hot lead." He explained with an annoyed huff, knowing he shouldn't be telling her about the mission, but he also knew she wouldn't sign off unless he gave her some valid reasons. Ghost looked at Belle, waiting for whatever opinion she had.
"Tell me about it." Belle said and scooted a little closer, keeping their voices down. Ghost sighed when she pushed for details, ignoring just how close they were as their knees touched under the table. She sipped her drink, waiting for him to go on.
"Arms dealer." Ghost said, his voice low as they attempted to keep others from overhearing their little conversation in the busy mess hall. Ghost knew this conversation would've been easier in her office or his office or even any random meeting room, but he had already worked so hard to get her one on one for this chat. He wasn't going to give her the chance to disappear on him again. "We found the unit where this organization is storing weapons of mass destruction." He explained and Belle gave him a small, unimpressed nod.
"Interesting." Belle said, not moved yet on whether she should allow him to go or not. If Ghost wanted this so bad, he was going to need to work for it.
"You haven't seen some of these weapons. They are next generation." Ghost tried to reason with her, trying to explain just how dangerous the weapons they were tasked with disarming and retrieving were. Even he and the other members of the task force was impressed by them which was something that happened once in a blue moon. "People, terrorists, pay big bucks to,"
"Yeah, I've seen the imaging." Belle cut him off, not exactly wanting to have a repeat of this conversation that she had with Captain Price earlier in the day. Ghost stopped talking, a little annoyed flicker in his eyes as she brushed off what he was saying, clearly having already had a little speech set up in his mind.
"You've," Ghost went to ask, and she met his gaze, answering his question without even speaking. Belle sipped her drink again and Ghost tried to think of how in the world she'd gotten the classified imaging. He didn't think she had the proper classification. "How?"
"Price." Belle shrugged as if it was nothing and Ghost rolled his eyes. Of course, Price had given her the imaging. The man clearly enjoyed having the shrink around, having seen the improvement in most of his soldiers since Belle had showed up. And if he was showing her the imaging then there was a reason behind it. "He wants me on the mission." Belle explained and Ghost scoffed a little, clearly not thinking she was serious.
"No, he doesn't." Ghost said with something that was almost a little chuckle but when Belle didn't laugh, he frowned. There was no way a girl like her should be on the mission with him and the other elites. Not because girls shouldn't be on the field but rather because she wasn't exactly built for elite missions that the task force trained so hard for. It didn't make sense. "You're not joking." Ghost frowned and Belle shook her head a little.
"Nope." She said and reached for her tray again, but Ghost blocked her hand.
"Then you need to let me come." Ghost said, sounding much more insistent this time as he stared at her. There was a beat of silence between them as Belle looked at him and Ghost stared right back. He was being dead serious, if she was going out there on this mission then he would make it his life duty to get out there too. She just simply wouldn't fit in with the other elites, even if she was friends with them. They couldn't protect her like he could, not that he wanted too of course. Belle finally let out an exasperated sigh, a sign that she was considering what he was saying. Ghost felt like he was getting pretty good on picking up her body language, something he was sure she wouldn't exactly appreciate.
"You will start coming to every session and be on time." Belle said, starting to negotiate with him. She wasn't going to just flat out agree without setting her own terms with him. Ghost's jaw tensed a little, but he gave a small nod, his eyes not leaving her for a second.
"Ok." Ghost verbally agreed and Belle looked at him for a beat.
"And you will actually start talking to me." She said, her tone serious as she leaned another inch closer. Ghost frowned a little at the idea of actually talking about anything with her, he was more then used to just stalling and wasting time during their little sessions. Her asking him to show up on time was one thing, her demanding him to talk was another issue on its own.
"Maybe." Ghost said, not agreeing to that term yet. Belle didn't look amused at all, she was going him a favor by allowing him on the field and he was going to agree to her terms if he wanted that signature.
"Simon." Belle said, her jaw tense as she met his gaze, her terms not wavering at all despite his rough gaze and how he clearly didn't like what she was making him agree to. "Deal?" She asked, waiting for his answer and not willing to hear whatever argument he wanted to make.
There was a beat of silence between them. "Deal."
