INTRODUCTION
SUMMARY:
They didn't always hate each other.
Childhood rivalries are a strange thing. The way kids work, they can be so fickle. One minute, they're your best friend, the next, they looked at you funny and now you hate their guts. Within an hour, they're your best friend again, holding hands and singing songs like nothing even happened. However, other times, the grudges can last longer than an hour— they can go on for years, so long that they can't even remember why they started to hate each other in the first place. For Vixen Mince and Rafe Marrow, they were prime examples of the latter.
The Fifty-Seventh Hunger Games were a spectacle that sank uncomfortably in every citizen of Panem's gut, no matter District born or Capitol born. Tossed into a mountainous, snow coated and frozen wasteland, the tributes would be forced to survive more than the unforgiving cold. She can still remember the mad glint in the boy from Six's eyes, the human blood staining his lips and teeth, and the animosity in his beastly starved growls as he extended his claws for her.
Then came the rumbling, a tsunami of snow rushing toward them and swallowing everything in its path. The Gamemakers made it clear. One of them was meant to be the winner, and it wasn't Titus.
Now it's a year later. Vixen sits on the stage instead of standing in the starved audience— because she's a Victor now. Vixen's name isn't in that gleaming bowl of Death— because she's a Victor now. And Vixen is responsible for the two unfortunate souls whose lucky stars have given up on them— because she's a Victor now.
Despite the title, she's learned rather quickly that there's nothing victorious about making it out of the Arena alive.
Being Reaped for The Hunger Games is petrifying in itself, so when Rafe Marrow is beckoned to the stage, of course he's terrified. Except along with the fear comes something else. He noticed the way she couldn't even look at him as he rose in front for all of Ten to see, her eyes glowering into the horizon with shoulders back and chin raised. Despite her poker face, the blood draining from her otherwise warm features wasn't fooling him. This shit had to be rigged. This had to be some sick joke. Some twisted and crazy mistake.
Except everyone knows, Fate never makes a mistake.
Now childhood rivals are forced to make amends, as Vixen is now Rafe's Mentor, and he's her Tribute for the Fifty-Eighth Hunger Games. If she wants to save herself a guilty conscience, and if he wants to make it out alive, they have to work together. They have to trust.
It's a good thing they didn't always hate each other.
