49| Lights Out

Jungkook and I avoid my family as much as we can for the rest of the break. If they're outside skiing or ice skating, we're inside drinking hot chocolate or talking and vise versa.

Even as Christmas arrives, we just exchange our gifts and move on, barely making any time to chat.

Instead, Jungkook and I go into the city to watch the Christmas tree get lit up. We heard it's this grand event that starts around the time the sun goes down and a whole bunch of people go to see it.

So we get our coats and shoes on before heading out. Once we arrive and walk around the beautifully decorated and snowy park, we make it to the center to see the tree.

It's gigantic with big ornaments hung on the long branches, sparkly tinsel wrapped around it, countless strings of unlit lights strung about it, and then the huge golden star on top that's also waiting to light up.

"Woah..." Is all I can say at the magnificent tree. I stare up at it so long that my neck starts to ache and Jungkook's does, too.

"People are crowding around now," he points out, "Look, I think there's the choir."

I peer over and a group of people dressed in formal attire while holding lightless candles are standing at the end of the path to the tree.

More people crowd in by the second and Jungkook and I are eventually pushed quite a bit left of where we were originally standing, but we still have one of the nicest views considering we're in the front.

The chatter gets louder and louder around us while the sky gets darker and soon it's dark out with the only lights being from the streets.

The crowd suddenly goes quiet and Jungkook and I look in the direction everyone else is. We hear hums in a mellow tune and see the choir slowly making their way up to the tree with candles lit in their hands.

The crowd clears the path for them and I'm pushed into Jungkook. "Sorry," I whisper and he holds my hand in response.

The choir gets to the Christmas tree and everyone goes quiet as the choir director steps in front of them.

The begin to sing a beautiful version of Little Drummer Boy and the crowd sways with the amazing harmony, listening to their voices that sound absolutely astonishing.

The next song is Silent Night and I lean into Jungkook's chest, smiling gently as we sway slowly to their perfect melody. He holds his arms around my waist loosely and rests his chin on my head.

Next thing that happens is they transition to a different song and the lights of the tree turn on, illuminating the park and everyone around us beautifully with a warm glow. The lights twinkle and I look up at the mesmerizing sight, taking in how amazing it looks.

The crowd claps and cheers after seeing the star on top light up a bright gold. People start to move around and Jungkook is bumped into hard enough that he lets me go and I stumble.

But I hit a small patch of ice and end up smacking into a small box on the ground...... Which supplies the electricity for the Christmas tree.

All of the lights on the magnificent tree go out and I turn quickly to try and plug it all back in before the crowd gets too riled up.

The choir stops, and the loud gasps and groans of the people around are most definitely confused and have no idea it was me, but Jungkook does.

Panicking, I grab the cord and try to plug it into the box again but it's too dark to see. Jungkook pulls out his phone and illuminates the box with his screen, "Hurry," I can tell he's trying hard not to laugh.

I immediately plug it back in, a deep blush still sitting on my cheeks even as the tree lights up a second time.

Then people nearby start to realize I was the one to kick out the plug. "It was her!" "Are you trying to ruin Christmas?" "Dumb kids."

"I'm sorry!" I tell them but they're not listening. "Let's go, Kookie." I grab his hand and quickly rush us both out of the situation.

No one follows us which is a plus, but now I'll always be stuck with the title of 'the girl who turned off the Christmas tree right after it was lit up.'

I sigh and put my face into my palms before hearing Jungkook start to laugh. "It's not funny, Kook." I whine.

"Sure it is!" He laughs more, "You turned off the all the lights!"

"Don't say it so loud," I wince and peek at him through my cold fingers.

He puts his arm over my shoulders and chuckles, "You're embarrassed, huh?"

"Of course I am!" I tell him and he sees my dark pink cheeks, "I just ruined Christmas."

"You didn't ruin Christmas," he reassures me and pats my shoulder, "You just ruined the tree for about a minute."

I glare up at him and he only shows me his bunny smile back. "Why can't you ever do something grand and embarrassing?"

"Who got us banned from a museum?" He asks, "oh yeah, me."

I giggle down at the ground, "That was pretty funny, I've got to admit."

"It's still your lockscreen," he points out, "I swear I deleted that photo when we chased each other barefoot all over campus."

I laugh, "Thank the universe for recently deleted."

"I'm just glad I didn't do something like tell my whole family I was thinking of fingering while at breakfast."

My cheeks flush and I playfully slap his arm, "Don't bring it up, that was the worst moment of my whole life."

"You think it was great and amazing for me? I'm out here trying to be on your family's good side and then you say you're thinking of-"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," I dismiss with a giggle. "See, that's what you get for messing with me under the table. I don't have many embarrassing stories that don't include someone else."

"You drunk called me for sex." He states with a smirk, "meet me at the library-" he begins to quote but I cut him off.

"Hush," I smile, "You're the one who kept irritating me after that."

"And look where that irritating has lead us," He holds up our intertwined hands and smiles at me. I catch the sparkle in his eyes from the Christmas lights strung around the buildings and small shops next to us, and it makes it an even better sight.

He looks at the windows of the shop next to us and stops, turning to see something inside more clearly, "What are you looking at?"

"Come on," he pulls me into the store. The little bell rings as we go through the doorway and the fresh scent of peppermint fills my nose.

He looks through the display of jewelry near the front and points at one of the necklaces, "We haven't gotten gifts for each other, and it is Christmas."

I examine the pretty necklace. It's silver with a small 'J' hanging from the thin chain with tiny rhinestones embedded in it.

"Look, there's an E one." He points to the necklace with an 'E' hanging from it and I smile.

"The sign says these are couples necklaces," I gesture to the sign on top of the case.

"The necklaces don't know that," he tells me, continuing to look at the necklaces.

"Good point, let's get them," I smile and he reveals his bunny teeth while the corners of his eyes wrinkle.

An elderly lady comes over to us, "Do you two need any help finding something?"

"I think we've found what we'd like," I smile politely at the lady, "The 'E' and 'J' necklaces right here," I point through the glass.

Minutes later, we pay and then leave. Outside the shop, he takes out the necklace with a 'J' on it and offers to put it on me.

I smile and nod before he goes behind me. Gently, he puts the necklace over my head and I lift up my hair out of the way while he clips the two ends together. "There," he turns me around and looks at it with a soft gaze.

"Let me do yours," I pull his necklace out and he crouches down slightly so I can put it around his neck easily.

"Do I need to move my hair?" He asks jokingly and I giggle before clipping the two ends together.

"You're beautiful now, Kook." I adjust the 'E' pendant and he flinches away slightly. "Stop being so sensitive," I laugh.

"It's not my fault." He wraps his hands around his neck, "I didn't ask for a sensitive neck."

I smile and gently pull his hands away, "It's endearing, don't worry." I hold his hand, "Let's go."

We go to a park across the street with Christmas decorations and lights in it, but not the same one with the big tree. "Look!" I point excitedly at the ice.

There's a large dip in the ground and a tree is in the center of it with golden lights wrapped around the branches. No one is skating on the ice because it's probably too small of an area for everyone, but it's big enough for us to slide around on with our shoes.

I drag him over to the big patch of ice and gingerly step on it to make sure it's thick enough to hold us. Yes! I let go of his hand and slide onto the ice.

He follows and we giggle while trying to slide around without skates. "Having trouble there, Kookie?" I ask as he slips and tries to catch himself, which ends up making him look like some cartoon character flailing his arms in the air.

He falls on his butt and I laugh, coming over to him, "Come on, goofball." I reach my hands down to help him up but I just fall on top of him, landing with my chest on top of his.

We giggle more, seeing our breaths cloud the freezing air in front of our faces. I roll off of him and we gingerly make our way to our feet, balancing on the ice like baby deer.

We slide over to the tree in the center and I hug it once I'm there, not wanting to fall down. Jungkook comes up behind and hugs me, making me smile, "I can barely balance by myself, I don't think I'll be able to help you balance, too."

"It's okay," he chuckles into my hair, "I'll just stay here anyway."

We're quiet for a moment before Jungkook speaks up again, "Ellie, look up."

I do and see a mistletoe directly above our heads. Grinning, I turn around in his arms. We look up at the mistletoe together and then return our gazes back to each other instantly.

The corner of his mouth quirks and his arms hold me tighter before I lean in and and softly kiss his lips, feeling the warmth spread throughout my body despite it being very cold outside.

We pull back at the same time, greeting each other's faces with gentle smiles. "Merry Christmas," I say quietly.

"Merry Christmas," he replies and kisses my nose.
