21| Just Sleep

Dinner was awesome as always and my mom pretty much only talked about her magic rocks and candles.

But now dinner is over and Jungkook has stepped up to help me with the dishes.

"This has been fun, I really like your family already." He tells me as he cleans a plate.

"From what I've heard, they all like you, too." I clean out a glass and smile.

We stand next to each other and wash a few more dishes before I speak up again, "Sorry about my mom by the way, I know she talked about her herbal stuff all through dinner."

"It's fine," he dries the last plate, "My mom doesn't want to see me, so it's nice that your mom at least wants to talk to me."

I can tell he's still frustrated with his parents. I hear the passive aggressive undertone and I can see his intentionally tight-lipped smile.

We get done with all the dishes and walk into the living room with my mom and Jenna sitting and chatting.

"...Speaking of kids," Aunt Jenna smiles at me when we enter the room.

"Hey, we're not kids anymore." I grin slightly and take a seat on one of the chairs.

"You'll always be kids to us, honey." My mom says.

"Aaaand," Jenna starts and pats her belly, "Tyler and I are going to have our third soon."

"Congratulations!"

When she walked in earlier with that baby bump I was wondering when she would bring it up that she's having a third child.

"Thank you," she rubs her belly, "I'm going in for another ultrasound after Thanksgiving."

"Do you know if it's a girl or a boy yet?" I ask.

"She's a little girl," she smiles, "And we're thinking about naming her Rosie."

"You should start dating people." My mom directs at me, "It won't be long and you won't have an opportunity to."

I know Jungkook looks over to me and I avoid looking back at him, "What?"

"You don't have much time to get married and have kids of your own, may as well start soon."

"Mom, I'm 22, I have plenty of time." I sigh.

"Jungkook, what about you? Are you seeing anyone?"

"Mom don't ask him th-"

"I'm not currently." He answers and I put my face in my palms out of embarrassment.

Why do you have to do things like this, mom???

"You know, I started dating your dad when I was just 19. I finished college, and immediately after that, we got married and had you."

"Mhm, that's nice." I mumble into my hands.

Jenna laughs and looks at my mom, "Don't rush them, Margret. They can take as much time as they want."

Jungkook and I nod and agree with her.

"It's better to wait and be with the right person than to rush into things and be with the wrong person." She explains, "When I met Tyler, I knew he was the one from the start, but I dated guys before that so I would know what I like and don't like."

We end up talking for about an hour until Jenna gets up to go to bed, and then we all decide to go to bed.

"Just don't look," I tell Jungkook with my hands on the hem of my shirt.

I have to change in our room because Jenna is in the upstairs bathroom and my mom is in the downstairs one.

"I won't." He turns on his bed so he's facing away from me.

I look back at him to make sure again before slipping the hoodie off and reaching down to grab my new shirt- it's not there.

I just had it, where did it go?

I look back at him again and he's still facing away from me.

"Jungkook, don't look but... Where's my shirt?"

He doesn't answer and in that moment I know that he has it.

"Jeon Jungkook." I warn and he laughs a little.

"What did that shirt look like? Describe it to me."

"It was big," I step closer to him, "and plain light blue."

"Oh, it would be a shame if I were to have that shirt, huh?" I hear the infamous smirk in his voice.

"It would be a shame if I broke your hands, huh?" I mock.

He laughs and tosses back the shirt. It falls on my bed and I put it on quickly, Now time for my sweatpa- "Jungkook!"

"Don't look, Ellie." He says and I smirk as I tuck his t-shirt under my arm more.

"I won't."

A minute later and he still hasn't said anything about his shirt going missing.

"You gonna give it back?" I suddenly hear him right next to my ear.

I jump out of surprise and he laughs and turns me over effortlessly. My eyes are drawn to his lean body, almost glued to it but I force myself to look up into his eyes.

He smirks and takes his shirt away from me, slipping it over his head quickly, "Who said you could look at me?"

"You're the one who rolled me over." I combat.

"Never said you had to stare at me like that, though."

"Like what?" I get defensive as he plops down on his bed.

He smiles a little, "Nothing."

"No, really, like what?"

"Like nothing." He peers over at me and I roll my eyes.

I take out my phone and watch YouTube to get my mind off of things. An ad comes up and just as I'm about to exit the ad, a notification comes in and I accidentally tap on it.

It brings me to Jungkook's text telling me goodnight.

I leave and go back to YouTube but Jungkook sees my screen and brings it up.

"So you read my message but didn't reply?"

"First of all, I didn't mean to read it." I side-eye him for a moment. "Second, I don't care."

"Well goodnight." He says vocally.

"Mhm." I respond and continue watching the video with my earbuds in.

"Goodnight," he repeats and I ignore him completely.

"Guess what I'm about to get?"

"On my nerves?" I pause the video.

"No, I'm about to get up if you don't say goodnight back."

"You're needy, you know that?" I tell him and unpause the video.

"No, I just want you to say goodnight." He sits up.

I pause it again. "Jungkook, I don't care."

"Just say it."

"The last thing I'm saying to you tonight is to stop talking because if I have to pause this video one more time I'm gonna be more irritated than what I am already."

"Say goodnight and I'll stop, you know this."

I don't reply and keep watching the video.

"Ellie."

I don't respond again and instead I turn off the video and lay quietly, just trying to sleep now because I'm annoyed.

Jungkook gets up and comes to my bed, laying over my legs now.

"Jungkook!" I scold semi-loudly since I can't yell at him when everyone's asleep.

I try to push him off but he doesn't budge. "Go back to your own bed."

"I thought you said you wouldn't say anything more to me?" He adjusts and looks up at me from my lap.

"Well I didn't think you would try to inhabit my legs."

"Just say goodnight and I'll go back."

"No."

"So you want me to stay here?" He says and I look down into his rich eyes.

"Of course not."

"I guess I'm not going anywhere until you say goodnight."

I let out a loooong sigh,

"Goodnight." I finally say.

He smiles and sits up, the weight from his head leaving my legs as he goes back to his own bed.

"That's not super difficult, right?" He smirks and gets under his blankets.

"Whatever, just go to sleep." I scoff.

"You go to sleep."

"I'm trying, but someone keeps talking."

"Yeah, you."

I wake up the next day to a kid screaming.

Sitting up quickly, I don't even notice that Jungkook is already out of his bed and running out the door.

I leave the room and go to the next one over only to find that Paige is throwing a fit.

"What happened?" I ask tiredly and Sam explains that he used one of her crayons.

I sigh and pinch the bridge of my nose, "From now on, don't scream because someone else used your crayons. You need to share."

"But I don't want to!" She says loudly and slams her pink crayon down on the small table. The madness of a four year old, everyone.

"What's going on in here?" Tyler comes in already looking a little annoyed with the commotion.

Jungkook and I leave and let Tyler talk to his kids. "Sorry for that, I know they're young." I apologize and lean against the wall sleepily.

"I understand," He replies, "I'm sure I was the same way with my older brother when we were that young."

"You have a brother?" I arch a brow as start walking back.

He nods when we enter our room, "We used to fight all the time."

"I've always been an only-child. What's it like having a sibling?" I sit on my bed while he sits on his, facing me.

"It has its pros and cons. My brother and I didn't have the typical love-hate relationship. It was just hate-hate," he chuckles a little, "I guess I shouldn't say was- it still is."

"Oh..." I pause, "Sorry for bringing it up."

"It's fine," he smiles reassuringly, "I've accepted that we despise even being in the same room."

I smile a little, now thankful that I never grew up with a sibling. "The closest I've been to having a sibling was my friend sleeping over at my house all the time."

"Did you and your friends ever say you were sleeping at so-and-so's house and then actually leave for something else?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, for instance, in highschool I told my parents I'd be staying at this guy Taehyung's house, but then all of our friends and I drove four and a half hours to go see a concert instead."

"Really?" I gawk, "I'm too much of a goody-two-shoes to do that, I guess."

"You're so innocent," he pokes cutely, "You haven't done much to give yourself a reputation."

"I'm just an angel." I joke and cup my own face in my hands while batting my lashes.

"I wouldn't go that far," he stops me and we laugh. "But really though, you never had any cool nicknames or stories from growing up? No other students outside of your grade really knew you because of your reputation?"

"Well people called me Smelly Ellie for like two years if that counts."

"What?" He lets out a breathy laugh, confused.

"In 2nd grade we went on a field trip to a farm and I tripped and fell into the mud. The other kids thought it was cow manure and called me Smelly Ellie for two years after that."

He laughs loudly and falls back on to his bed, "Smelly Ellie" he repeats and giggles harder.

"It's not that funny," I whine, "Come on, I'm sure you had some stupid nickname."

"They called me Long Jeon in highschool. That's more of a compliment, though." He says with an arrogant smirk.

I face-palm myself with a grossed out expression, "Who came up with that one?"

"I was in gym class, and uh-"

"YOU HAD A SURPRISE BONER!" I conclude and point at him.

He lets his head fall back against the pillows with a heavy sigh, "Unfortunately."

"So it's not that amazing, huh?" I pick on him, "People making fun of you with a nickname?"

"No, it was great." He expresses, "It's like if the whole highschool said you had the nicest ass. It boosted my confidence to be honest."

"I think it boosted it too much." I tell him and intentionally keep my eyes away from the subject of the conversation.

"No way, Smelly Ellie."

"Yes way, Long J- I don't really want to use your nickname."

He laughs, "Is is because you think it's true?"

"It's because it's gross and I don't want to think about it."

"Whatever," he chuckles and lays back on his bed again. And that's when my eyes decide to peak over while he's not looking.

Fortunately I stop myself before I get there completely. Curiosity killed that cat and I am not about to be the cat in this situation.

"Hey guys," Josh's voice comes from the doorway, "The kids want to go to the park, are you coming?"

I look over at Jungkook and then back at Josh, "Sure."

Josh and Tyler talk on one of the benches while Jungkook and I semi watch the kids and semi chat with each other.

"Sam!" Allie whines and runs after him.

"You're frozen, I tapped you!" He frowns and on cue, Callie, the healer, runs by and taps her twin sister.

"She's unfrozen now!" Callie giggles and they all start running again.

"How are they not cold?" I stuff my hands in my pockets and shiver as the wind blows against my face. "I'm freezing, aren't you?"

"I'm sure we can warm up somehow," he brings his face closer and winks.

"Ew." I respond unenthusiastically.

"What? I mean we can run around or something."

"Right." I side eye him untrustingly.

"Get your mind out of the gutter, there are kids around." He scoffs playfully.

"Koo!" Paige calls and he looks over to her at the monkey bars.

We walk over, "Yes?" He inquires and she makes grabby hands at the bars above her. "I can't reach it." She pouts and he just smiles before picking her up so she can get a hold of the blue metal bars.

She swings herself to get the next bar, and then the next, and so on until she gets to the middle and nearly falls but Jungkook catches her. She giggles and yells "Again!"

I stand back and watch them. He must've brought her back to the beginning of the bars five times and helped her along, being right there with her if she were to fall.

She makes it across a few times, though we both know she's having a lot of fun dropping, too.

Once she's done, the other kids come over cheerfully and Jungkook sees the opportunity to play around on one of the higher, singular bars which are placed next to the monkey bars.

Even I'm surprised when he pulls himself up effortlessly to the top of the bar. I'm convinced he used magic, but somehow his right leg is on the other side of the bar and he's resting his weight on his hands and the back of his right thigh, letting his left leg fall straight down.

I know this position from doing it a lot when I was younger. I'm just surprised he can also do it.

He flips around the bar using his knee to drive himself and pushing his weight to make a full circle. The kids gasp in surprise and clap happily while I'm standing there scrutinizing his form.

How his veiny hands grip the bar and how he still manages to keep his posture straight as he flips around another time.

With one last circle, he comes down and lands on his feet. "Woah!" The kids look at him in awe and he bows with a grin on his face.

Soon the children are running around again before seeing who can slide down the slide the fastest.

"Impressed?" Jungkook leans against one of the support poles to the bars.

"No." I dismiss and cross my arms over my chest, "You're not too impressive, Kook."

He smirks and looks away. "What?" I ask.

"Nothing." He puts his hands in his pockets.
