Things left Unsaid
Chad's POV
I woke up knowing this was the day. The day I never thought I would see. I knew it would come but not now. I wore my black tuxedo and Italian shoes. It's not that I'm trying to look good I just have a lot of good stuff.
I combed my hair and buckled my watch on my wrist. I am ready now. I marched downstairs and headed through the door. I opened my car door, seated myself and closed it back. I sighed in frustration. I felt uneasy as if I'm forgetting something. But what? I shook my head anxiously denying I forgot anything. I pushed the key in the ignition and the car started.
I glanced backwards to see if I would hit into something while I reversed. I sat still feeling hesitant. Suddenly it hit me. I jumped out of the car seat and ran back inside the house. How could I forget her?
I picked up the programme. She looks so beautiful yet peaceful. I held in the tears. I promise I wouldn't break down. I had to be strong today. I carried the rose I bought her and went back into my car.
I finally drove off and followed the directions I was given. I pulled up on the side of the street where the building was. I hopped out of the car knowing I was still early. I entered the over crowded halls. Her schoolmates made up 3/4 of the population here. Guess she barely had relatives of her own. I sighed profusely and continued strolling down the aisle as if I'm a bride.
I was getting closer to her. My palms getting sweatier at each step I made. "Pull it together Chad" I whispered to myself. I continued walking towards her with the last drain of boldness left within me. "Just a couple more steps left" I sighed in relief. I could feel the eyes of many piercing at the back of my head. Before I knew it, I reached her. I looked over at her. She was asleep but we all knew she will never awake again. I finally exhaled the air I held in since I got here. I placed the rose at her side along with the others prior to mine.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and breathed profusely. In then out! In then out!
"Claire, there's so many things I wanted to say to you and" I lost it. I followed my mantra 'in then out! In then out'
"And I know its too late now but" I begun but was unable to even my breathing. I coughed heavily as if something was stuck in my throat.
I finally recovered and looked at her face. It had vague scars. She looks totally different from the girl I used to know. "I uhhh.... I" I couldn't hold in the tears any longer. I loosened my fists and my hands were shaking non-stop. My knees became weak and I lost my balance. I eventually fell to the ground in despair. My asthma attacked me suddenly hence, I was inhaling heavily like a pig. My dad ran to me while the others gathered but stood still watching the show. He lifted me by the arm pulling me out of the scene. No, I can't leave her! Not yet. The pall bearers closed the casket and took her away. "No!" I finally cried out. "It's ok son. She has to go now" my dad assured me. I didn't pay any attention to him but tried getting up to run after her. "Wait! I never got to tell her!" I cried again but they continued walking quickly. I ran towards them but the closer I got, the further they went. I was becoming breathless, my sternum was becoming too tight to bare. I finally gave up then fell to the ground and gasped for oxygen.
I was sweating as if the temperature rose to 100°
I knew I could kill myself doing this but I didn't care. I watched as the men walked with her into the bright light then vanished.
"No! Wait!" I cried aloud but my throat was too hoarse to make a sound. "I need to tell her! I need to tell her!" I chanted continuously.
"Wake up!" I heard a concerned voice of a lady bringing me back to reality.
I woke up thankful it was a dream. I looked around. I was still at the hospital awaiting information regarding Claire's state."Thanks for waking me up mom. You have no idea what you saved me from" I joked. Her eyes were flushed with concern and they were piercing through my soul. I felt awkwardly nervous.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked her incredulously. She sighed and took the seat next to me. "You were talking in your sleep" I was overwhelmed and begun wondering what I dreamt out loud. I was sweating like a maniac.
"What did I say?" I asked fearing the response. "You said you need to tell Claire something before she dies... What exactly do you need to her son? What have you done?" She asked seriously. Oh no!
Suspenseful huh?
