Chapter Ten
~
Tristan and I hung out for three whole months before he asked me to be his girlfriend. I had already begun to like him within the first month, so of course I said yes. He was such a great guy. He was funny - he could make me laugh. He wasn't possessive or the jealous type. Well, he was, but he tried not to show it.
Guys hit on me a lot even when I was with Tristan and I know it pissed him off. They didn't give him a second thought, but I didn't like people disrespecting him in front of me. Disrespecting him meant disrespecting me.
One month after we became exclusive, we were out just walking down the street. It was really late, but I liked the night, so Tristan put up with it for me. He cared about me - I could see that easily. It made me feel like I was a teenager again, with butterflies in my stomach.
"Cade, what's your favorite color because you never told me?" Tristan asked after a moment of silence.
I laughed and looked over at him. He was so beautiful, with his short, cropped black hair, pointed nose and strong jaw. His eyes, too. His eyes were so beautiful. And his skin, his skin was like mine. Dark. We were a lot alike, Tristan and I. We both had black hair, blue eyes and tan skin. But we weren't so alike that people would mistake us as siblings or cousins.
"Umm...I never thought about that, Tristan. I like the color blue, I guess," I said, reaching over and brushing my thumb over his cheeks. "Like your eyes."
He stopped and turned around, so he could cup my chin and kiss me lightly on the lips. "I think your eyes are prettier. They look silver in the light."
I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back, my lips pressing against his soft, moist ones. He had amazing lips, with the most perfect cupid's bow. I was jealous and I never got jealous of people's appearances.
Tristan pulled back before we got taken away. He had a habit of making me forget about everything except him. "Cade, stop. Or I won't be able to control myself," he groaned.
A smile lit my face. We hadn't even properly made out yet. He wanted to go slow because I was the first girl he'd dated after his deceased, ex-girlfriend, Rachel. I liked starting off our relationship like this, because Jebadiah and I had gotten together after we had sex.
"Okay," I breathed and twined our fingers, continuing our walk and talking about random things. He was telling me about his friends when three men whistled to catch our attention.
"Hello, love," one of them slurred. He grinned and his teeth were yellow. He also had a scar on down his face. I wrinkled my nose in distaste.
Tristan glared at them and let go of my hand, putting his arm around my shoulder instead. "Let's keep walking, Cade," he murmured in my ear.
I nodded and we took a few steps before the youngest of the men, who was probably in his late twenties, walked forward. I heard his heavy footsteps and it reminded me of that fateful night I had gotten my innocence taken away. These men were just like those six monsters.
"Hey, we're talking to you," he said harshly.
The third guy came up. He was blonde. Tristan was trying to keep on walking, but I had stopped, though I still refused to turn around yet. "Don't listen to Mave, here. He's got anger issues. Come on, girlie, we can show you a good time. I doubt your little boyfriend there is taking care of your needs," he purred.
How revolting. My inner wolf had finally moved on - she didn't speak to me anymore. I missed her, but she had taught me everything I needed to know. But if she was still here, she'd attempt to break out of my skin at this very moment.
Tristan's head snapped around and he was shooting fire at them through his eyes. "Fuck off," he spat.
"Aw, look at him, pretending to be a hero. Let's teach him a lesson yeah?" the guy with the scar suggested, throwing down his cigarette and stamping down on it.
The muscles on Tristan's shoulders bunched as he tensed. His face was hard and he was trying to control his temper, but I knew he was going to lose it. So I turned to face the men and stepped forward.
"Back off," I said softly. But they heard.
The Maverick guy sneered at me. His friends laughed. "Oh look. The kitten has claws," blondie exclaimed.
I didn't reply, but I sent them a warning through my eyes. Tristan couldn't see my face, so I let my pale eyes darken until they were pitch black. "Back. Off."
They began to shake because even they knew being able to change your eye color at will wasn't normal. "Let's go. They're not worth our time." Blondie hit Maverick's shoulder to snap him out of it and the three walked away after a murderous look towards me.
"People like that piss me off so much, Cade," Tristan growled, putting his arms around me. "Let's not walk out late, okay? I don't want you to get hurt."
I hid my smile by pressing my face to his neck. "I'll be fine," I promised. Because if anything, I should be worrying about Tristan.
~
I did care about Tristan a lot, but I didn't trust him with my family and secrets, yet. So I went to long measures to hide Michael from him. Instead of Michael coming to visit me, I went and visited him. I didn't tell Tristan where I was going and he didn't ask. But I knew it was hurting him because I was keeping so many secrets.
Four months after we began dating, I showed him my apartment.
"You need a couch," he said ten minutes after we entered through the door and he had surveyed the living room with dissaproving eyes.
"Why?"
"Because you need somewhere to sit." Tristan took off his shoes and walked around the basically empty room. "Where's the TV? Picture frames? Side table?"
I shrugged. "I don't want any."
Tristan stood at the center of my room and stared at me. "I'm going to take you to the mall and we're going to buy you these things," he finally said.
"What? No!"
"Yes, Cade. You have nothing here. It doesn't even feel lived in," Tristan said, frowning at me. Pain flickered through his eyes.
"Why are you sad?" I asked.
"Because I don't want you to ever leave," he said softly.
I walked over to him and wrapped my arms aroung me, holding him to me. He buried his face in my hair and sighed deeply. "Just...just don't let your apartment be so empty, please. It just makes me feel like you're going to up and leave at any moment because nothing is holding you back."
He wanted me to reassure him that I wouldn't leave, but I couldn't promise him unless I knew I was sure. So I just grabbed his face and kissed him with everything I had and told him what I was feeling through the touch of our lips.

Two months later, he brought up the topic of family while we were sitting on the couch at his two-story house, watching TV. "Do you have any siblings, Cade?" he asked.
I shrugged and didn't reply.
"Aren't you ever going to tell me?"
Looking over at him, I just gave him a blank stare.
Tristan sighed. "I want you to meet my friends and family. My parents are having a barbecue...I would like for you to be there."
"You want me to meet your family?" I asked, surprised.
Tristan hesitated. "Well, yeah...We've been dating for six months. And my mom has been curious about who my mysterious girlfriend is."
"What did you tell them about me?" I asked.
Blood rushed to his cheeks. "I told them your name was Cade and you were the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen."
I laughed and crawled onto his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him on the cheek. "Thank you, Tristan. You're beautiful, too."
He pretended to look hurt. "Beautiful? Way to reduce my manliness, Cade."
"You're very handsome." I smiled.
Tristan's fingers feathered over my cheek and then he kissed me, playfully tugging on my lower lip with his teeth. I tried not to moan because I wanted Tristan a lot. But the thought of being intimate with someone made me shy. I'd only ever been with Jebadiah. Willingly.
"So are you going to come?" he asked.
"Where do they live?" I questioned, playing with his hair.
"Springfield." My breath caught. I hadn't been to Springfield since the day of the battle. I'd always managed to avoid going through there when I visited my siblings and Hayden. It was right in the middle of all three packs.
"I, um-." I was trying to find a way to say no without hurting him, but the hope in his eyes made me breathless. "Okay."
Tristan beamed and hugged me. He pressed a sweet kiss to my temple.
"Thank you, baby girl."

"Do you think they'll like me?" I asked Tristan, feeling self-conscious as I smoothed out my skirt. I didn't like wearing these things, but I wanted to make a good impression. It was short, to the middle of my thighs and white in color. There were pink flowers with green leaves. My top was simple - just a white tank top that hugged my waist and chest.
"Yes, of course they will," he said. He had parked his car in front of a medium-sized house and we were just sitting there, with him staring at my long legs. "But I don't think you should've worn that skirt."
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because I have cousins and a brother and friends who wouldn't mind taking you from me." His eyes moved up to my chest, but he quickly looked away before I could call him out on it.
I smiled and got out of the war. Tristan had tried persuading me to wear heels, but that was a big no. I was already a giant, being almost six feet tall. I didn't need to be any taller. So I was just wearing flip flops.
Tristan came around to my side and took my hand, kissing the back of it. "I promise, everyone will love you."
Instead of going inside, he led me around the house to the backyard. I could hear music playing and people talking. As soon as we were in view, there were a lot of shouting and Tristan's hand was pulled from mine because people were hugging him from every direction.
I stood to the side and just watched as a woman that looked like an older version of Tristan kissed his cheeks and hugged him. Then she slapped him on the chest. "How could you not visit your mother for two whole months?" she demanded. I smiled, almost sadly because she made me miss my mom.
"Sorry, Mom." He looked apologetic, then he brightened up as he noticed me again. "Guys!" he yelled out, getting everyone's attention. He came over and put his arm around my shoulder. "I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Cade."
I was used to being stared at, but usually they were people I didn't know, so I didn't care. But these people, I was trying to make a good impression. I tucked a lock of my hair behind my ear and smiled at them. "Hello."
A blonde man came over, grinning widely. "So you're the girl my best friend is so hung over! I'm not surprised." He winked at me. "Tristan, she's a stunner."
Tristan glared at him. "Tim, leave my girl alone. She's mine." I laughed because I was finally seeing his possessive side.
Tristan's mother came over and smiled at me. "It's so nice to meet you, Cade, I'm glad you could make it."
I nodded at her. "Nice to meet you, too, Mrs. Reighner." I don't think I've ever been so formal to anybody in my life. "Tristan's told me a lot about you."
"Likewise! Wow, his description of you didn't do you justice." She took my hand in hers. "But he was certainly right. You are the most beautiful girl I have ever met." His mother laughed.
I found myself blushing. She was kind. "Thank you, Mrs. Reighner."
"Feel free to call me Lucy, Cade," she smiled at me. Then she looked over her shoulder. "Derek! Come here!" she called.
I spent the next hour getting to know Tristan's family. His father, Derek, was really funny and his mother was kind. Tristan's sister, Kate was off with me, but he assured me it was because she was in a bad mood in general. And his brother, Matthew was the biggest flirt I'd ever met.
Tristan's friends were really great, too. Well, most of them were. It was obvious that his friend, Alexis, did not like me at all. She had a thing for Tristan and I was in the way, but I didn't pay her attention because I couldn't be bothered to get in a fight with a human. She wouldn't win even if she decided to be a hunter. Killing werewolves unless you were given the orders to by the leaders of the Circle was illegal. Not surprisingly, Alexis had also been Rachel's best friend.
After we had all eaten and socialized, Tristan bid farewell and we were on our way home.
"So what did you think about them?" he asked, looking over at me. I was staring disdainfully at the yellow spot on my tank top from when Alexis had 'accidentally' spilled her lemonade on me.
"I like your family. They're really nice," I said honestly.
Tristan smiled and touched my cheek. "I'm really glad."
I looked out the window. I decided when I trusted Tristan enough, I'd let him meet my family. Not my biological one, but the Shadow Pack. I didn't know how Tristan could deal with having a relationship with me when he didn't even know my full name, my age or anything about my past. But I guess that's what love did. And I guess that's just how he was.
I sighed deeply and looked over at him. I didn't think I was in love with him yet, but I was on my way. It was just about time.
