PROLOGUE

THE DAY THE WORLD went to shit, was the day Bronwyn Prentiss would never forget. She had been living in East Macon, Georgia her entire life with her grandpa and brother. Her grandfather took the two in about 3 years after Bronwyn was born. Bronwyn never understood what happened to her parents, why they stopped being apart of her life. She had forgotten almost everything about them. Although she lived with her grandfather, her elder brother took care of her most of the time.

Jonah was in his bedroom with his boyfriend Nathan Renetey, while Bronwyn was in her own bedroom, beside their grandfather's office. He was retired, but he still spent most days in his office. He had encountered some crazy guy at the store earlier that day, Bronwyn overheard him talking on the phone about it.

Bronwyn had been up in her room for a few hours at this point, playing with toys or coloring in her selection of coloring books. Jonah stayed in his room with Nathan, their grandpa didn't know the two were together, so usually when he was over they stayed hidden. She never said anything.

Suddenly their was a loud crash in the office beside her. She jumped slightly and sat up, glancing into the hallway. She slowly stood up and made her way to her door, peaking out. "Grandpa?" She questioned quietly.

Curiously, she stepped out farther into the hallway, staring at the office door, which was shut. She was always told not to disturb him when he was in his office. But what if he was hurt?

She slowly pushed the office door open. "Grandpa?" she repeated, peaking it. A vase had been knocked off his desk and he was sitting there, just staring forward. "Hello?"

Suddenly he turned around, his face was discolored and his eyes were white. His skin looked... ashy. He growled as he started moving towards Bronwyn. "What are you doing?" She backed up, but he kept coming towards her.

She let out a scream before moving into the hallway. She didn't know what to do, why was he acting like this? He wasn't himself. She looked around for a moment and hesitantly grabbed a candlestick on a small table, pointing it at him.

"Stop it!" She yelled, fresh tears burning her eyes. He got closed, so Bronwyn swung the candlestick with all her might. She hit him in the head, blood splattering on her. He was still moving so she hit him again. "Jonah!" She screamed.

She hit him one more time, which caused him to fall. She dropped the candlestick as she hears Jonah coming up the stairs. She looked towards the direction of the stairs and Jonah was standing there, in shock. "Bonnie?" He questioned, staring at their grandfather. "What the hell happened?"

She moved closer to him, she couldn't keep her eyes off her grandpa. She had killed him. "He- he was gonna hurt me... he wasn't human."

Jonah noted that, he didn't look entirely human. That's when Nathan came up the stairs. "Jonah- the news," he said, stopping when he noticed their grandpa. "What...?"

Jonah shrugged. "I don't know. B said he tried to attack her." Bronwyn was clinging to Jonah's side, she was shook up over the whole situation. "What's on the news."

Nathan just shook his head. "People are- eating people, they are coming back as these monsters."

"That's insane."

"It's true," he said. "Macon's bad, meaning here will be bad soon. I think we should go."

"Are you serious?" Jonah asked.

"You're grandpa must have been one of those things, Jonah. People are going crazy, fleeing the cities," he explained. "Just trust me on this."

He bit his lip. "Let's grab some stuff- food and water," Jonah told him. "We'll take my grandpa's truck."

Nathan nodded and went back downstairs. Once he did Jonah knelt in front of his sister. "Jonah?" She questioned. "What's going on?"

He sighed and shrugged. "I'm not entirely sure. But we're gonna leave, away from here." He explained. "Grab anything you need, be quick okay?"

She nodded and went to her room, glancing around. She pulled a small bag out of her closet, shoving some clothes in there, some of her stuff animals. Jonah and Nathan were downstairs getting food and bottled water, shoving it into the back of the truck.

Once Bronwyn was done, she went downstairs meeting her brother and Nathan outside, she put her bag in the backseat of the truck, turning to look at her brother. Nathan was putting some extra gas into the trunk. "Where are we gonna go?"

Jonah shrugged. "I don't know," he admitted. He opened the backseat door for her, helping her in.

She got in the backseat while, Jonah and Nathan got in the front. Jonah was driving.

Nathan looked over at him. "This isn't going to be a permanent solution."

He nodded. "I know."

Their was a long silence as Jonah started to drive. Bronwyn looked out the window, the world looked... normal until they got into the city.

The city was chaos. People were running around, those things were all over the street. Nathan reached for the radio and turned it up, switching to a station with the news on it.

It was the same warning over, and over again.

"Hide, don't trust anyone. The monsters... they just go after anyone."

It scared her, she looked down at her clothes. She was still covered in her grandfather's blood. She spotted a gun across Nathan's lap. They must have grabbed at least one of their grandfather's gun.

It scared her, that they felt the need to arm themself. Everything had to go back to normal at some point, she hoped it was soon. She hoped she'd be back in school in no time, and Jonah and Nathan would be hiding out in Jonah's room to hide their relationship.

She could only hope.
