Queen of Sorrow
The Queen of Sorrow
In a parallel universe where it is the future and past at the same time, a boy stands on a balcony looking over the city in which he rules. It is the fiftieth century and times have changed. He lives in the tallest skyscraper in the city of blue as he should. All the buildings look like crystals under the moon. He catches sight of families eating dinner, coworkers in a meeting, and people partying through the windows that are open in the building nearby. He grips the railing of the balcony hard. Railings that bind him and shape him.
“Your highness,” a voice says from behind him. It’s his head of security Martin, who is standing with hands behind his back. “It’s time for your announcement.”
Kian nods, pushing away from the railing and following Martin to the conference room where Kian will be making a citywide broadcast. Everyone’s anticipating it since the royal family rarely does anything publicly. This day is going to change lives and everyone knows it.
“Prince Kian, you’re here,” says a makeup artist as the boy walks in.
“Soon to be king,” says another voice. The makeup artist turns around and gasps. The king himself stands in front of her, King Caspian. She taps her right shoulder and then her left—a sign of respect and loyalty. After, she scurries away and lets the king and his son be alone.
“Father,” Kian says, looking at the floor. Eye contact is a privilege.
King Caspian pats Kian’s shoulder and Kian finally looks up. He’s getting allowed to do more things nowadays. He’s just turned eighteen and is fit to be the king. “Son,” he says, “Ready?”
People bustle around and lights flash on. Kian sits in front of a glass desk and folds his hands together, looking as mature as he can. Nobody sees his leg shaking underneath the table. One of the cameramen gives him the signal and Kian flashes a smile. “Hello, people of Blue City,” he starts. Kian’s speech has been edited at least fifty times so this has to go right. “As you know, I am crowned prince Kian Caspian Constanza of the Blue Continent. There isn’t much time before my coronation and you all know what that means….” He takes a deep breath, looks through the windows at his city and then back at the camera. “I am searching for a potential wife and searches will be worldwide. I am not looking for status or money, there’s no use. I will pick a random female from the ages sixteen to twenty and crown her as my queen. However, remember I am looking for a future queen, and if the person isn’t deemed to be that, I won’t marry her.”
Meanwhile, somewhere else in the Blue Continent, a girl is snuggled up with at least two blankets and is watching the television— a show called Break It and Make It, where contestants have to break objects and remake them or pay for whatever expensive thing they’ve broken. Daisana thinks it’s a stupid show but it amuses her.
Suddenly, her younger sister barges in and grabs the remote, switching channels.
“Hey!” Daisana yells in protest. “It’s my turn for the telly!”
“Shut up, Day,” her fourteen year old sister, Nira, says. She’s more aggressive than usual and is jumping up and down as the news comes on.
Day rolls her eyes. “Didn’t know you were so interested in the news, Nira.”
Nira rolls her eyes right back. “Don’t be stupid. I don’t care about the news but I do care about Prince Kian.” She sighs dreamily as she says his name. “He’s made an announcement and everyone is raving about it!”
“But—”
“Shut up, it’s on!” Nira suddenly says, taking a seat right on top of Day’s legs even though Day protests. Nira’s eyes stay glued to the television as the Prince appears. His black hair, high cheekbones, and violet eyes are an instant tell that he’s royalty. Nobody else looks like Blue Royalty. Their eyes are violet and their hair dark, while everyone else only has the choice of brown or blond hair and any eye color but violet.
Day rests her head back on the couch and closes her eyes, hoping for a nap. But it’s not possible because suddenly Nira screams her lungs out so loud that even their parents barge in, wondering what’s going on.
“What happened?” their mother says, her hair a mess from running to them.
“P-Prince Kian is choosing his bride!” Nira squeals.
Their father sighs, relaxing from his tense pose. “You scared me, Nira,” he says. “Don’t ever scream unless it’s an emergency.” He walks over and hands Day a letter. “Oh, and found this out in the mail.”
“It is an emergency!” Nira’s smile is so wide it looks like it’s going to fall off her face.
“A letter?” Day sits up, confused. “Who sends letters anymore?” She looks at the letter, which is a light blue with roses over it. There’s no return address and her address isn’t even on there. It just says Daisana Lee with a seal on the back. She slowly opens it as Nira chirps on.
“He’s looking for a bride! This could be it, Mom and Dad! I could get married to the future king of our country!” Nira is saying as Day opens the letter. “Well, he’s looking for someone older but I’m sure I could convince the government otherwise and maybe even sneak into—Day, why are you so pale? You look like you’re looking at a ghost.”
Nira gets closer to Day, who’s looking at the letter in shock. “What?” Nira asks. “Did you finally get a love letter?” she jokes. Their mother and father come closer in concern. Day is as still as a rock and Nira has to pry the letter out of her hands to see what’s going on. “Oh my god.”
“What is it, dear?” their mother says, her eyes wide. “What’s going on?”
“Day…Day…,” Nira says, unable to finish her sentence. The letter is taken from her hands as well as their mother and father stare at it and gasp. “Day’s been selected as one of the many girls eligible to be the… queen. She… she’s expected to be in The City by next week.”
