Humans - Leico Part 3
So sorry for keeping you waiting, here is the last part of Humans!
Carmen rushed towards her mother and father, not caring about the smoke that was poison in their lungs.
Nico wanted to stop her, there was no point, they had been in the smoke to long, they had no life in them left. They were dead and gone. But he couldn't, all he could do was lay there on the ground and watch her, checking their pulses, checking their breathing, slamming her fist against their chests to jump start their hearts.
Nico overlooked his father rather easily. Sure he loved his father but without him Nico ruled the estate. Nico single handed could make all of their lives better. He could save so many slaves from beatings, he could make better standards and rules for them. He could feed them properly.
A tinge in his heart became aware to him, he felt cold hearted that he didn't feel as shattered over the death of his father as Cameron was over her parents. But Nico had more important things to look after.
Leo.
Leo who was in the corner, he sat there hugging his knees, oblivious to the fire and smoke, he seemed fine, just a little soot on his cheeks and hands. Otherwise he was unharmed. Nico's heart fluttered at that. Leo was fine, he was alive and breathing.
Slowly and painfully Nico crawled over to him, sitting up next to him and taking his hand. While his fingers brushed against Leo's wrist he could feel Leo's pounding heart, like a hummingbird.
"Are you okay?" Nico asked, he wanted to drag Leo out of there before the roof collapsed on them but he knew that Leo wasn't okay and that before he could even think about moving him he would have to talk Leo into it.
Leo shook his head in a daze, his brown eyes were filled with tears, his cheeks red, his hands trembling.
"Leo?"
"I did it." Leo whispered. "Charlie was going to come with us, but Hades.... He insulted my mother, my father, he raised a hand and I got so scared that my fingertips started burning. My mother screamed and knocked back the chair. Hades... he... he looked at me as if I was a piece of meat that he could sell at a high price. My father stood in front of me suddenly, he protected me, that's when Hades hit him, forcing him away, taking me by the collar."
"Charlie?" Nico asked.
Leo pointed over to a dark skinned boy laying on the floor by the door. Nico's breath caught, the boy couldn't be any older than they were, his hair was shaved off and he had bruises all over his arms. Beside him laid another boy, a fair skinned one, with a cruel scar on his cheek. The evil smirk had followed the boy into death.
"Father tried to pull Hades off of me, that's when Luke got out a knife, he took it against my mother's throat... I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, it's okay," Nico repeated and hugged Leo close, the smoke was stinging his eyes and he was starting to get trouble breathing.
"I killed my mother by a fire!" Leo wailed heartbroken, "I killed her the way she feared the most."
"Leo we have to get out of here okay, come on," Nico tugged at Leo's hands but the other boy wouldn't budge.
"I killed my mother."
"Carmen!" Nico yelled over the inferno that made the wood pop in the ceiling and walls. A terrible noise made the floor crack but nothing seemed to fall apart, yet. "Carmen come on!"
Nico turned around just in time to see Carmen pulling away from her dead parents and making her way to her younger brother. The roof groaned and one of the supporting beams fell down, it landed on top of Carmen. Making it seem as if she disappeared through the floor.
"Carmen!" Nico screamed making Leo jump out of his shock.
Together they crawled to Carmen that had fell through the weak floor, she laid there, a floor under them, her leg in a weird angle, the beam crushing her chest. There was nothing they could do as the fire hailed down on her broken body.
"We need to get out of here, grab my hand!" Nico screamed to Leo, panicked over the thought that they could be next.
"I don't deserve it." Leo muttered and started walking back to the corner.
"You still have the rest of your siblings out there, Octavian is guarding them! I made every guard do their job protecting everyone on the estate! I will make things better just take my hand!"
"I wanted you to make it better before my parents died!" fire crackled over Leo's fingers, it made its way up his arms, making Leo a walking torch.
"I can save the ones that are left!"
"IT'S NOT ENOUGH!" Leo sent a fire ball against him, too angry to understand what he was doing. "I begged you Nico, I wanted to get out, and now my parents are dead! Carmen is dead! I killed innocent people!"
"I tried!"
"No you really didn't." the fire had extinguished, Leo wasn't fighting anymore, he was falling apart along with the house. "you just stood by your father's side, helping him, following him, making up excuses, and look what you have done."
"Leo!"
"You... you could have done something sooner."
"My father would have killed me!" Nico protested, "you didn't know him, he killed Hazel's mom, he controlled every single person on this estate."
"I knew enough." Leo said with so much venom that Nico should have gotten scared.
"Leo..." Nico pleaded. "We'll die if we stay here."
"Let me die."
Nico bowed his head, the tears were falling, all he wanted was to grab Leo and shadow travel them away. He would sell this stupid estate, he would make every man, woman, and child free, he would make the guards take care of all of them until they could stand on their own feet. Nico just wanted Leo to be safe. He couldn't stand watching him die, not now when he couldn't deny his feelings.
"I love you." He croaked, his powers draining, the smoke stopped his breathing, he felt ill and wanted to lay down. "I love you."
"I thought I loved you." Leo bit back, "I just don't know now."
"Leo please, I love you, I love you, I never did anything because my father would kill us, I, I just want you to live, I want to grow old with you, please don't give up. If not for me than for your siblings."
Leo stared at him with hollow eyes. The fire covered almost everything, even Leo burned at this point but he didn't get hurt, he just stood there, in all his glorious beauty. Carmen was wrong, Nico wasn't the handsome vampire, it had always been Leo. Leo with his strong hands and loving heart. The person that kept trying to convince Nico to save everyone. Leo was the immortal that was sent by the devil to bring the apocalypse. He just turned out more good than bad.
Did Nico believe in vampires?
After looking at Leo, yes, yes he did, and he loved him even more in that second than he ever had before.
The floor gave away and Nico only had enough time to cling to the broken wood. His feet dangling over empty hot air, the fire making his leg bubbly and blister. His hands were growing weaker by the second, he could have shadow traveled away but he didn't want to leave Leo. Leo was after all the whole reason why he had gone back in. So rather than going to safety he would end up as Carmen, he rather died than see Leo burn.
Silently he begged God for forgiveness, he asked for forgiveness that he hadn't loved his father enough, that he hadn't made sure that Annabeth and Jason were okay, or that he didn't know what happened to Percy, he regretted not acting before this fire started. There were so many things he could have done, Leo was right, Nico was just a coward. And lastly he begged God to look after Hazel, he knew that Octavian would take her in after knowing of Nico's death. The boy may be a psycho but he wasn't heartless.
He let go of the wood that had dug splinters into his fingers, into his palm. He wanted to crash down and join Carmen. He felt like he was soaring as he fell down, he felt as if he was Icarus, with burning wings that sent him to the cruel waves below him, at least he would get cold before death.
A hand caught him, a death grip around his wrist, he thought that his arm would rip out of its socket. He looked up and saw Leo holding him up.
"I can't lose anyone else."
The house shook, Leo held him steadily, and Nico shadow traveled away with his last powers. He would die, just not falling, breaking all of his bones, he would die from saving Leo.
"I heard the whole house is gone now."
"And that Leo freak isn't leaving his side."
"Don't say that so he can hear."
"Sorry Octy."
"Shut up Clarisse you can't call me that!"
"I'm glad either way, that house was ugly."
"You have any news about the Grace siblings?"
"They're peach."
"Peach? You really are weird Clarisse."
"They're fine, so is that stupid Jackson. Hey is the master waking up?"
"Leo, Leo wake up we think he is waking up."
"Nico?"
Nico woke up to a black room, no one else was there and it was chilly. It was as if he woke up in a freezer. Banging on the door, people outside talking, Nico tried to blink but the blackness didn't budge. He tried to lift his arm or wiggle his toes but nothing.
Everything hurt.
"Neeks?" a wet hand slapped his cheek, hair tickled his neck and he wanted to squirm away but he was to tired.
"Wake me up later Hazel." He mumbled.
"He talked, Leo he talked!" Hazel screamed with joy and kept on tickling him with her long hair.
"Hazel go away, it's too early, five more minutes."
"Brother!" Hazel hugged him, she laid on top of him, if she was a little heavier it wouldn't be so adorable. "Open your eyes!"
He obeyed her, "fine, I'm up what is it?"
Searing pain rippled up from his legs and he wanted to scream. Biting back the pain, he didn't want to scare Hazel by screaming in her face. He wondered what had happened. Then he remembered, the fire, the pain, Leo.
"Leo?" he asked.
Hazel rolled off him and sat up beside him on the bed. "Leo!"
"Aw come on Haz!" Nico complained since she had screamed in his ear, maybe he should have taken his chance after all.
"Are you okay?" Leo walked into the room, he had stubble on his cheeks, massive bags under his eyes, and his clothes were rumbled. It was as if he hadn't slept for five weeks, or taken a shower.
"Hurts." Nico said.
"Go and play with Angel." Leo smiled as he helped Hazel down from the bed, when she had run out Leo sat down, all the air had gone out of him.
"Lay down." Nico moved away painfully slow, his entire body was on fire from the pain.
Leo laid down, planting his head on Nico's chest. "I'm so tired."
"Where am I?" Nico asked, the green walls weren't something that occurred anywhere in his house.
"Octavian's family house." Leo answered. "They are all rebuilding your house, I burned it to the ground I'm sorry."
"It's okay, it was hideous anyway." Nico laughed.
"Nico?"
"Mm."
"They had to take your leg." Leo said, "the fire had burned it so badly that you couldn't use it anymore, and it was traveling through your body, they had to cut it off or else you would have died. You have been out for two months."
"I don't have a leg?"
"They cut it just below the knee." Leo whispered. "It is all my fault, if I had just pulled you up sooner, if I hadn't doubted you, I... I'm so sorry."
"It's okay." Nico said, he didn't know what to say, it still felt like his leg was there, which one had they taken?
"And you have severe burns on your other leg, you can still walk and stand on it but... you will have rehabilitation." Leo continued. "I thought you would die. Your hair was burning, your clothes, I thought you would die."
"Never." Nico scoffed. "I'm still handsome though right?"
"Your hair hasn't grown back, you had rather long hair, I miss those black locks." Leo said leaning on his elbow so that he could look down at Nico. "But your face is still as perfect as ever, so is your neck, and chest, and stomach, and hands, and arms, and shoulders."
"Mm, that's nice to hear." Nico sighed, tired again even though he had only been awake for a few minutes. "Where are the rest of them?"
"Octavian made the guards take care of them. They are all on the estate, nothing was ruined except for the main house. No one died, except for my parents, Carmen, your father, that Luke guy, and Charlie."
"That's a relief." Nico sighed again content that he had been able to save almost everyone. "And the Grace-"
"They are waiting outside, cursing and arguing with the nurses and doctors that have come for you daily to check up on you." Leo smiled. "They really like you."
"We're like siblings so of course they do." Nico returned Leo's smile.
"Do you remember," Leo gulped. "Do you remember what happened before you shadow traveled us out of the house?"
"I told you I loved you." Nico said bluntly, not caring if anyone heard, "I still do if you are wondering."
"Good God, I love you too." Leo smiled so big that Nico was surprised that his jaw didn't break.
The door flew up and Annabeth stormed in, her blond hair was a mess, does grey eyes shining with fear.
"I told you something would happen if you kept seeing that boy!" she said accusingly and pointed at Leo.
"Annabeth stop it!" Jason said coming in after her.
"You better be... you better be okay." She choked back tears.
"Annabeth." Nico reached for her hand. "I'm better than okay. How are you guys?"
"No don't turn the tables, I'm sorry! I told Hades about the two of you, I said that you really liked Leo. That's why when Charlie came he wanted to send him into Leo's family. To spy. It was because of me. I am so sorry. I almost killed you." Annabeth cried.
"No you didn't, you didn't create the fire, and neither did Leo. It was just a disaster but we all lived through it." Nico comforted them. "We are all okay."
"I'm sorry." Annabeth ran out again, the hurricane had come and gone but Nico loved that about her, he knew she would be back at the end of the day.
"I'll go talk to her." Jason offered with a weak smile.
"How is Percy?"
"Bedrest like you, he broke his ribs but he'll live." Jason said, "I'll come back later okay?"
"Thank you."
"Alone again." Leo said yawning making Nico yawn too.
"Come here stupid." Nico placed a hand at the back of Leo's neck and pulled him down for a kiss, a kiss that should have taken place a long time ago. "I love you."
"And I love you." Leo kissed him back.
