Chapter 4

The sun had long since set by the time you finally calmed down, though not a single word had been exchanged between you and your companion since earlier that day. A gentle breeze blew past your face, drying any remaining tears that still remained.

"(Y/n)?" Marshall began carefully, glancing over towards you.

"What?" you replied, your voice hoarse and weak.

"I know it won't mean much," he looked down at his hands, contemplating on what to say, "but I really am sorry. I didn't know my actions that day would cause something like that to happen."

You looked over at him for a moment before averting your gaze again, "Yeah, well, saying sorry isn't going to bring my parents back, or change what you've done," you mumbled, feeling too emotionally drained to muster up any anger towards him at the moment.

Silence fell between you two again as you stared down at your feet, silently scolding yourself for being this vulnerable in front him. You were broken from your thoughts when Marshall suddenly spoke, "What if we went back to your old village? Maybe we can ask around for your parents."

You snapped your gaze up to him, your (e/c) eyes containing a twinge of hope, "You mean it?"

A tiny smile formed on his face seeing that you had perked up a bit, "Yeah, it'll be a neat little adventure for us."

You were about to jump with excitement when you remembered one small detail, causing your mood to drop a bit, "Oh, but, I don't remember where it is. If I did, I would be there already."

Marshall shrugged, his smile growing, "That's the fun of an adventure! It'll be like finding long lost treasure, besides, I still kind of remember the direction of it, just don't know any specific location."

Your smile grew again, your face brightening up as you jumped up and hugged him in excitement, "Oh, thank you!"

Shock was clear on his face from your action. He looked down at you, his shocked features slowly shifting to a soft smile, "Yeah, no worries, it'll be fun."

You stayed like that for a moment before you realized what you were doing. Pushing away from him abruptly, much to his disappointment, you took a few steps away from him, averting your gaze to hide your crimson face.

"Wasn't expecting a hug from you, doll," Marshall teased, laughing when you turned and even darker shade of red.

"Yeah, well," you stammered out in a desperate attempt to sound angry, "don't let it go to your head. I just got caught in the moment, nothing more."

He quirked an eyebrow, his usual smirk returning to his face, "Yeah, well, I hope you get 'caught in the moment' a lot more then."

You glared at him, your face burning, "Shut up and just take us out of here. It's starting to get really dark out."

"You afraid of the dark, doll?" Marshall laughed as he floated over to you, preparing to pick you up and fly off.

"Of course not!" you retorted, crossing your arms, "I just prefer not to be in an area where I can't see any potential threats."

"Don't worry, doll," he chuckled, picking you up then flying off in the direction of his home, "I'll protect you from the baddies in the dark."

"I don't need your protection," you mumbled under your breath, "I've taken care of myself before."

You passive aggressive remark didn't go unnoticed by him, but he simply laughed it off. Hopefully, he thought, you would warm up to him in time. He liked being around you, and he would hate for you to loathe him forever.

"Hey Marshall," you started after he had set you down in front of his house, "where exactly am I going to sleep?"

He tapped his chin, lost in thought for a moment, "I don't know, though, I doubt you'd want to sleep on my couch seeing as it's as hard as a rock. I doubt my bed will be any better, I sleep floating above it so I have no idea how soft it is."

You quirked an eyebrow, wondering how he manages to stay airborne in his sleep. Shrugging it off, you simply ask, "Well, do you have like a load of spare blankets or something? I could use those to make a bed of sorts in the living room."

"Yeah, I have a few laying around I think," he floated into the house with you following after him, then disappeared into the other room, presumably to find some blankets. A few moments later he returned with a decent handful of blankets, pillows and quilts.

"Where did you get all these?" you lifted a few up, glancing over them to gauge how soft they were. He simply shrugged before helping you set them up into a makeshift bed.

"That should do it," you stood back, examining your work with a small smile.

"Alright! Hopefully that should be comfy enough to sleep on," he looked over at you, his eyes lighting up with excitement, "after all, tomorrow is when we begin our adventure."

You rolled your eyes at him but couldn't help but smile a bit. Though you didn't want him to see, you were excited for this adventure too. Settling down in your makeshift bed, you closed your eyes and drifted off to sleep, hopeful of what tomorrow might bring.
