Part 15: Inheriting The Buster
"S-Sephiroth?"
"Male sure to remember that name. It'll likely be the last you'll ever heard in your short life."
Alex was immediately caught off guard.
One second he was out killing monsters and enjoying his time.
The next he enters the church and is suddenly forced into a death match.
"W-Wait what!? You can't just force me into a fight I'm not ready!"
"That's how fights act in the real world don't they? No one's ever really ready for a battle. It's simply on common sense and instinct."
"S-Still! I just came to explore the church! That's all!"
Sephiroth merely scoffed and stood next to the sword on the ground and pointed at it.
"This sword caught your attention didn't it?"
"W-Well yeah obviously. It looks really cool. I at least wanna try a pull at it."
"Sorry to say but no one's ever wielding this sword ever again. Not on my watch."
"And why not!?"
"That's confidential and personal kid. If you'd like to know, come at me. Maybe you'll prove to be worthy of an opponent."
"H-Have others fought you before?" Alex asked as hesitation grew in his voice.
He honesty didn't wanna fight Sephiroth due to the sheer massive length of his sword.
The blade, though thin like a katana, was extremely longer than any weapon Alex has ever seen.
The blade itself was taller than any normal human being.
"Yes I have. Many have come to the church just for a chance to pull out and wiled the sword on the pedestal, yet, all have fallen to my blood without even getting a chance." Said Sephiroth.
Alex got even more hesitant.
"You. Tell me your name kid."
"A-Alex. Alex Mustang."
"I see. Well then, Alex Mustang. Are you willing to battle me for a chance to pull and wield the sword on the pedestal?"
Alex sighed.
"Not like I have choice now do I?"
"No. You don't."
"I see. Well then."
Alex clapped his hands together, placing them on the ground as a sword slowly formed and rose from it, as Alex picked it up, aiming it at Sephiroth.
"I accept."
"Very well then."
Sephiroth had his blade ready.
Both men charged at each other and clashed.
The sheer size of Sephiroth's blade got an edge as Alex was pushed down.
Thankfully, Alex placed a hand down on the ground as a pillar emerged sending Sephiroth up and colliding with the roof.
Debris fell down the pillar was easily cut down by Sephiroth.
"Quick wit? I'm starting to think your more than just a kid."
As he said that, he was immediately scorched flames as Alex had snapped his fingers at him.
'Direct hit. He should be scorned right now.' Thought Alex.
As the flames went away, Alex was shocked to see that Sephiroth had blocked the flames with his one black angel wing.
"Nice reaction time. Though, you were still far from catching me off guard. I read that from almost a mile away."
'Dammit! He treats my Alchemy as if its nothing! I need to turn this now!"
Sephiroth charged at Alex again, and, even though Alex rolled away and dodged the initial strike, the extra length of Sephiroth's sword managed to slash Alex's torso open.
Alex groaned in pain as he fell onto the floor holding the wound.
'Crap! That's where Slicer had cut me before! Shit! It hurts worse now that he cut it!'
Alex slowly staggered to his feet as he held the wound, with blood seeping out.
"I draw first blood as always I see. Aside from the slight burn marks from your fire attack earlier, you haven't come close to laying a single scratch on me."
Alex looked at him as he scoffed.
"Drawing first blood don't mean a damn. In reality, those who bleed the most, fight the most, vand fight the hardest. So come on. Make me bleed as much as you can! That'll just make me wanna fight even Hardee than before!"
"That energy. It's what I hate in kids. You all have your big talk and never-."
Sephiroth got cut as Alex dashed and slashed deep on his right shoulder.
Blood gashed out as Sephiroth held his arm in pain.
"Damn cheap shot."
"That ain't no cheap shot if you call me kicking me down the pile not a cheap shot! We're even now!*
"That's what you think."
Sephiroth had his angel week touch the wound, and, in am instant, it healed.
"You don't know what you've gotten yourself into kid. I'm far above your league."
"So what if you can heal? All I gotta do, is cut that wing off right?"
"It's much easier said than done. My wing is highly durable. It'll take a miracle to destroy it."
"I'll take my chances."
Sephiroth scoffed.
"You really are persistent kid. I'll honor it as you die."
Both immediately charged again.
TimeSkip
"Is that all? I'll admit. You posed a slightly better challenge, though, it wasn't enough."
Alex laid seemingly limp on the floor, covered in wounds and blood as Sephiroth, who had a few cuts on him, turned around to walk away until he barely dodged Green Heart's oncoming spear.
Instead of landing down, Green Heart flew over to the back of the church to lead Sephiroth into a two on one and it worked as he followed her.
That left Alex all alone on the floor limp.
He slowly looked up and crawled up the pile.
It was a massive struggle, however, he made it, as he stared face to face with the sword.
Though he was severely weakened, Alex, on both knees, grab the tip of the sword's handle as he slowly pulled himself up.
As he refined balance, Alex put both hands on the handle in a pulling position.
He tried all he could to move the sword up, yet, no budge.
He continued to pull, not showing an ounce of giving up, however, it still didn't move an inch.
Just when Alex was gonna give up, a voice was heard.
"No. Don't give up. You can do it. I know you can."
Alex immediately looked up, and came face to face with a girl.
"W-Who're you?"
"I'm the one the church is named after."
"Y-Your Aerith?"
"Yep. I'm Aerith Gainsborough. I was killed by Sephiroth many years ago. I've been waiting for someone to inherit this sword since the last holder passed, and, you are the chosen one."
"W-What?"
"Just place your hands on the sword and pull. I'll do the rest."
Alex placed his hands on the sword and began to pull, and, this time, it was moving.
Alex began to pull harder as he noticed his hands glowing green for a bit.
Finally, Alex pulled the sword out and held it firmly in his hands.
"Good job Alex Mustang. I may now rest in piece."
Immediately, the sword and Alex both gained a blue aura.
Alex then got visions before appearing in a white void, as he was face to face with two men holding the same sword as him.
"So, it seems as if your the next chosen one." Said the blonde boy.
"Remember to take it easy Cloud. Don't wanna scare him." Said the black haired one as he revealed the blonde to be Cloud.
"Right. I understand Zack." Said Cloud revealing the other boy to be Zack.
"W-Who are you two?" Asked Alex who was completely confused.
"We were the last two chosen ones to wield the sword before you kid! I'm Zack Fair!" Said Zack.
"Cloud. Cloud Strife." Said Cloud.
"As soon as you touched that sword, we knew all about you Alex Mustang. Your definitely a chosen one." Said Zack.
"C-Chosen one!? For what!?"
"Your the next wielder of the Buster Sword. With that sword, you take our honor, our hopes, and our dreams." Said Cloud.
"You'll be the one to finally vanquish Sephiroth." Said Zack.
Alex let all this info sink into his head.
It was honestly a mess.
Now he's gotten involved in a massive issue involving generations.
Just as Alex was about to say no, Aerith reappeared and held Alex's hands.
"Don't doubt yourself. Me, Zack, and Cloud are all entrusting you with this sword an its power. Are you willing to accept?"
Alex sighed and grew a smile.
"Yeah. I accept."
The white void went away as Alex and The Buster Sword were now completely covered in a blue aura.
Alex chuckled, as he opened his eyes, revealing them to be Ice Blue.
"This sword is the key. I'll forge my path into the future and lead it to the holy land."
Alex then immediately charged out of the church, ready to clash again.
