A Shot of Espresso
Raven Fallon was crying for the first time in years.
In her mission with Frost-Byte, things went sour, Camilo, known as Glossy, was in a coma. She locked herself in the bathroom, returning from Macau, China.
Frost-Byte, Whistler, and Diva—Raven's teammates—were still in Macau, but she was sent to Greece. Diva handed her a phone, whispering an apology. Steel, their supervisor, had sent a message that said Raven was transferring back to a base in Greece. "I'm sorry," Diva said silently, walking away.
If Diva, Orla Sullivan, felt pity for you; you knew things were messed up.
FALLOUT still didn't know who opened the door for Glossy's kidnapper or who hired them, but all eyes went to Raven, the terrifyingly quiet girl.
She was too scared to go back to the FALLOUT base now or to even ask Steel about her mission details. Raven was spiralling and hated every second of it. Control your emotions, her dad would yell. Control them like the agent you were meant to be—
Suddenly, her phone rang. Raven picked up. "H-Hello?"
"Birdie!" Steel's angry and panicked voice took over. "Where have you been?"
Raven gulped back sobs. She screwed up, she couldn't save Glossy in time. She still didn't know who was messing with FALLOUT.
"All FALLOUT tech is down!" Steel hissed. That meant earpieces, laptops, computers, gadgets... "Someone hacked into our system and it's overloading, risking exposing everyone's identities!"
Raven was horrified by the thought of everyone remembering her again—not as Birdie, but Raven Fallon. "Our main tech crew are trying to defuse it, but a huge countdown came," Steel continued. "Worse of all, we lost connection in Macau."
Frost-Byte.
Whistler.
Diva.
"What?"
"You're not in Macau right now?" Steel barked.
"No, you messaged that I was being transferred to Greece, Diva showed it to me..." Diva. She had sent a fake mission to Raven so she could attack the base and get her out of the way.
FALLOUT's tech had been stolen before, earpieces were glitching, and files vanished. Frost-Byte had theorized that someone from the inside was tripping them up, but his theory never went further. "Diva's a traitor! She's been working from the inside to tear FALLOUT down!" Raven got up, running to grab her coat.
"I already sent a search team for Whistler and Frost-Byte before we lost connection, Birdie...but..." Steel sucked in a sharp breath. "It's been a day and nothing."
"No," Raven whispered, already out on the street. "I'm catching a flight to Macau."
"I can't stop you, can I? I'm occupied with clearing systems in base, so you're going solo on this one, Birdie."
"I won't let you all down."
When Raven arrived in Macau, it had already been two days since anyone heard from Whistler or Frost-Byte. She hadn't gotten contact from Steel yet, meaning FALLOUT's network was still down.
She went back to their hotel room for another sweep. Raven found Frost-Byte's laptops, the screen flickering. It was a pre-recorded message from him. "Steel, there's been a deceiver," Frost-Byte's voice whispered, looking over his shoulder. "I was looking into why you'd send Birdie to Greece, but it's a cover-up made by Diva.
"I'm worried she put Glossy into a coma, she's planning something. I can't find Whistler, damn his temper, but I'm planting a tracker on myself. If I'm not in the hotel room by the home you see this, then something bad happened—"
The screen glitched and died. "No, F-Frost-Byte!" Raven cried out, gasping. The screen flickered to a GPS, showing a tracker of him and Whistler. That's where Diva's keeping them, she realized.
Oh, Frost-Byte, you genius.
Raven called the local police, but they laughed in her face. FALLOUT wasn't ever taken seriously unless it was Steel who made the command. Solo again. Raven arrived at an abandoned—and eerie—warehouse.
She quickly snuck in through a broken window, hearing voices from another hallway. Raven followed, hiding behind a wall as she heard Whistler's voice. "I'll kill you if I have to!"
His face was beaten, but Frost-Byte was worse; dried blood dripped from the corners of his mouth. Diva was alone and Raven wondered if she acted alone. Raven moved closer, hiding behind boxes. Frost-Byte noticed her immediately, mouthing to leave. Diva spun around, shotgun in hand. "Come, my Birdie," she sang. "Or I'll kill them."
Raven stood up, bitter. "Just...why?" She was beyond furious. "You betrayed everyone at FALLOUT!" For the first time in years, Raven was loud and bold.
"Yeah, blame it on the pretty distraction agent." Diva and Birdie circled around Whistler and Frost-Byte, who were both bound to chairs. "FALLOUT took advantage of me, I was eighteen and agreed to erase my past! I had to leave behind my family and identify. For what?! To become an agent so I can distract the enemies with my body?"
"The recruitment system is wicked," Raven agreed, "but you're endangering all of the agents' lives by hacking into the system. You're just as wicked then, Diva."
Diva shot at her, screaming, but Raven also fired off at Diva's chest. Bang! Raven fell back, the world blurring as Chinese police officers barged in.
She closed her eyes. Sleep, my little birdie, Raven's dad's voice echoed.
Raven woke up in a hospital, sharing a bed next to Glossy. He was still in a coma, but finally stable. Next to her was Frost-Byte, holding an espresso. "Raven?" he whispered, grappling for her hand.
"W-What?"
You're okay, she realized. I'm okay.
"Steel managed to call the police in time and Diva missed vital organs. We found Diva's hacking team, Steel's coming over to debrief later. They're finally changing the FALLOUT recruitment system. Diva got her wish."
Diva...
"I love you, Nathan." It came out of nowhere, Raven never told anyone she loved them, not even Dad. "Sorry, I'm tired..." He handed her the espresso. "I love you too, Raven." She had hidden feelings for so long, but Raven finally showed herself. Frost-Byte was her greatest victory.
