Chapter 15
While going through the schedule, I came to know about a meeting which was going to take place in London and guess what? My boss had to attend that meeting. Five days of total bliss. Ah! It gave me immense pleasure. I could go home on time, with no extra work, no hassle. I could watch my favorite dramas which I kept on hold for a long time because of time trouble. How about shopping, clubbing, and having dinner with my darling? Yes!
I have spent quite a time fantasizing about this day when I won't be under the girth of that awkward gaze.
My daydreaming almost made me oblivious to the fact that I was present in the office which sadly happened to be right in front of my boss's office. I couldn't help but smile sheepishly, stretching my hands indolently to the sides, imagining I'll have a whale of a time in those five days. Out of the blue, the ringing of my phone smashed the adventure ride of my dreamland.
I picked up the phone. "In my office, now." Commanded the voice from the other side of the phone. I became frantic with worry reckoning his reason to call me. I kept my fingers crossed and reported to his office.
"Miss Reveria, I just need to inform you that you'll be accompanying me to our meeting in London. Make your presentation ready and make sure to cross-check every detail keenly. I'll forward you the whole schedule of the meeting in a minute." He said while signing some documents.
A bursting sound echoed in my ears. It was the balloon of my pretty desires which I was blowing a few minutes ago. Before it could float in the air of relief and bliss, it burst.
"Don't mind, but I...I was informed that Alessia will be accompanying you for the meeting." I stuttered, earning a death stare from him. "I mean Alessia is more experienced and proficient than me. Wouldn't it be great if a person like Alessia joined you for this meeting?" This time I asked outright without stuttering but yes with a lot of fear and hope at the same time.
He stood up and came near me, his eyes were fixed on me. Every time I see him walking toward me I feel nervous. Scared. He came very close to me now, I dared to look up at him, and then I noticed him observing my features warily. Immediately my eyes found the floor the most interesting thing in the huge spacious room. Suddenly my hands became nomadic, they lost their way and couldn't decipher where to settle down. Was he still looking at me? I again mustered up some courage and looked at him. This time his eyes were on my lips. That's awkward.
He finally said something, "I think you forgot that you're my secretary and not my advisor. It's written in the contract that you'll be the one accompanying me everywhere and responsible for my meetings. Simple, isn't it? Now you can go and start working for a meeting."
That's why they say daydreaming is not a good thing. I'm left with no option now but to go with him. I'm feeling like a kid whose candy has been snatched by someone. That's disappointing.
"You can let go of my pen if you are done playing with it." He said, crossing his arms sternly across his chest.
"Oh! Pardon me." I hastily dropped that pen feeling a deep blush of embarrassment and came out quickly.
Marching into the heavy steps I sluggishly collapsed on my seat. My heart sank from what I heard from my boss. My plans were knocked sideways by him. The problem was not about going to London for a meeting, the problem was ushering Denver for the meeting. Between the riots of contemplation stirring in my mind, I suddenly noticed Denver from the corner of my eyes. He was casting covetous eyes on me while nibbling the same pen playfully.
I need redemption from his gaze. I should convince Alessia to accompany Denver to the meeting. She is my last hope.
I approached Alessia with a face as long as a fiddle to make her feel considerate about me."You know how much I'm scared of Denver. I would choose a ghost to haunt me if I had to choose between a ghost and Denver. Please, save me. I'll handle all your work here. Please, do this favor to me." I pleaded with her to save me.
Alessia slackly rubbed her temples in worry and presented me with her side of the dilemma, "Listen carefully girl, I've to make a lot of arrangements for people who are coming this week only with a good business deal. They are also our old partners and that's why it would be best for us to let me handle them. I can't help you with this."
She continued, "And I want you to break that mirror of illusion where you see Denver as a devil and scary person which he is not. He has temper issues because he has a lot on his plate. It's hard to work with him as he wants his employees to be very competitive and diligent. It takes time to understand a person, first impressions do not always come out to be true. You are his secretary and it seems he is willing to give you new opportunities. Do you know what it means? It means he wants to trust you. I'd suggest you take this opportunity and make the best use of it. If not for you then opt for it for the sake of your professional growth."
Alessia's words had a deep meaning which eventually made me realize I might be mistaken to possess a certain belief for a person's demeanor. It takes time to understand people and to get used to their behavior. I was feeling relaxed and positive. I couldn't help but hug Alessia for her precious piece of advice. "I love you, Aly. You're a savior." I said with great pleasure.
She gently patted my back and said, "All the best! I know you're going to nail it there as well. After all, this gem is my discovery. don't you think?" She declared lifting my chin.
Smiling sheepishly, I said, "I'll try my best."
The next day happened to be the hectic day of my life. Before going for the meeting I had to clear all pending work. Well, there was no pending work as I always complete my duties on time. However, on some days it feels like I'll get finished while doing my work but the work won't get finished.
Thank goodness! Everything is done.
Sitting on my chair my heavy-laden eyes looked in the direction of the giant pendulum clock. The clock was striking at 10:30 asking me to go home. I took my belongings and was about to leave the office. But the moment I stood up I wasn't able to move as I found myself feeling peculiar, dizzy, and somewhat sick. Taking the support of the wall I moved little by little to the elevator. I boarded the elevator and was about to press the button to the ground floor when I saw my boss coming into the elevator. He then pushed the ground floor button.
Meanwhile, my dizziness began agonizing over me with every passing second. It became tormenting for my legs to a standstill. I leaned on the wall of the elevator.
"Are you alright?" Denver asked me. For the first time, his voice seemed concerning and not commanding.
Without looking at him I put all my effort into making myself look alright. I responded, "Yes-s, I'm fine." Sadly, my shaky voice made it clear that I was not fine.
Finally, the elevator slammed into the ground with a dull thud, and the doors screeched open. I began walking with my tottering steps when I again heard that same voice. That solicitous voice saying, "I can drop you home. Please sit."
Without turning I replied, "No thanks, Mr. D'Angelo," and kept on moving. I was certain that I'll be fine.
Standing on the road I eagerly looked for a Taxi with my powerless eyes and body. Suddenly, my legs quit the act of being brave, my body betrayed me, and I was all set to make a terrific connection with the ground with a thump. I couldn't fight but unwillingly accepted the order of my weak body and let myself hit the ground.
Surprisingly, I couldn't hit the ground. Something hung me up not letting my body touch the ground. It felt like strong muscular arms encircled me in their firm grip. With my last ounce of energy, I tried to peel my eyes to at least see the person who helped me and that person happened to be...Denver. Looking at him gave my eyes a few more seconds of power. His face was flushed with worry. He looked anxious. But for whom? For...me?
And then my mind became blank and everything else dark.
