Birthday boy <3

Tre, Mike and I waited impatiently in front of Billie's front door, waiting for him to open it after Mike had knocked so loudly.

Granted, it was ten in the morning and knowing Billie he might've still have been asleep when we arrived. But after Mikes loud knocking I assume he was about to open the door any second now grumpy.

And like I'd guessed when the door cracked open Billie had a scowl across his face. Squinting his eyes slightly at the sun behind us.

"Happy birthday!" Tre screamed from behind Mike and me, making me flinch.

Billie grunted, yet Tre ignored pushing in between Mike and I as he yanked on the string of the cheap party hats we picked up on our way over and landed the hat on Billie's head releasing the string.

Billie winced at the string hitting his chin as Tre let himself in and Mike and I followed.

"What time is it?" Billie grunted, shutting the door as he followed where we heading.

We got to Billies empty kitchen where Mike placed the pack of beers down and I put the boxed cake beside.

"Ten in the morning," I answered, spinning around seeing Billie enter the kitchen.

"You guys ruined my late morning then,"

"Cheer up birthday boy," Mike instructed before pulling a beer out from the pack. Offering it over to him. "Birthday beer?"

"It's ten in the morning, Mike,"

"Well it's your birthday, so the after one o'clock rule doesn't matter today,"

Billie rolled his eyes taking the beer from Mike before making his way over to the kitchen table and pulling himself out a seat, as the wooden legs of the chair squeaked against the kitchen floor. "I told you guys not to make a big hullabaloo about my birthday," He looked over at the three of us cracking his beer open.

"We only got cake, beers and party hats," I defended smiling.

"C'mon, can't you be cheery for one day?" Tre asked with an annoying smile, joining Billie at the kitchen table. "I like the extra touch of the birthday hats, they're stylish,"

They weren't anything special, just cone shapes with string. Mike had a red one on, Billie's was blue, Tre's was green and mine was yellow. Tre demanded we all have different colours, so it's a good thing the pack only came with four colour options.

"They're uncomfortable," Billie grimaced, pulling the string of the hat from under his chin stretching it out before he let it go again and it bounced back on his chin. "Ow,"

"They're hats birthday boy, hats for you," Mike smiled with his beer in hand.

Billie quickly pointed a finger at Mikes beer. "Hey- you can't drink,"

"And why not?"

"It's ten in the morning?"

"It's your birthday, that's an excuse,"

"Yeah, an excuse for me. Not you buddy,"

"Aww come on Beej, be nice." I cooed taking my own seat at the table whilst Mike did the same.

"You guys woke me up," He reminded. "On my birthday too,"

"Well as much as we're sorry, not sorry for ruining your beauty sleep, we got you a cake and some beers. So I think that should make up for it," Tre told him.

"I told you guys, I don't care about my birthday,"

I didn't exactly know why Billie disliked his birthday so much. I don't even know if there's a good reason for it. But for as long as I can remember he's asked us not to cause a fuss on the seventeenth of February, and I mean every year we've ignored.

"I'll get a refund for the cake then," Mike shrugged.

"No- I mean you can leave the cake... but-"

Mike pierced a smile over the table. "-Exactly,"

"Where's Ollie?" I asked looking around the room.

Billie answered. "On a morning shift,"

"On your birthday?" Tre pouted.

"I don't care,"

"Y'know being so angsty on your birthday isn't good for you?" I grinned slightly.

He rolled his eyes, before slipping out a smile. "Well has anyone got any birthday cigs to cheer me up?"

Mike pulled a pack out of his pocket setting them on the table. "Since it's your birthday," He slid the pack over to Billie on the surface. "Knock yourself out. If it stops you from being moody,"

Billies smile enlarged as he grabbed the pack. "Cheers Mike," And his eyes looked over to me. Asking me something I wasn't sure about.

"What?"

"Are you coming for a cigarette?"

"Oh." I realised, as he stood up and I joined him pushing my seat back. "Sure."

Billie and I left the kitchen back on our way outside. Billies mom didn't like him smoking inside, and since he could disobey anyone but his mom, he never lit a cig up under the roof.

We reached back outside on his front garden as we sat in the doorway of his house together, he passed me a cig as I reached for the lighter in my pocket. Lighting my cigarette before passing it to him to do the same.

"Thanks," He murmured, the cig in-between his lips.

I took my first breath on the cigarette, before looking over at him. "Why would you not want us to make a big fuss on your birthday?" I finally asked since the question had been rolling around in my head since he opened the door.

Maybe I didn't understand it because of how much I adored my birthday. Having a day all about you, with an excuse of everyone having to give you presets and kindness all because you got born on this particular day.

"I mean," He shrugged first, blowing out the smoke. "It's just another day,"

"But it's your day?"

"Well I know that, but I just don't see it as anything special,"

"Billie it's a day all about you. I know you don't typically like your birthday. And you may not wanna celebrate it, but we do for you,"

"I know you guys do- and I'm happy that you guys still try but-"

I cut him off with a chuckle. "-Brighten up, it's a nice day. And it's yours,"

He glanced up at the sun that was in the sky, dawning heat onto our skin. There were hardly any clouds in the sky. And although that was usual for California, it was still a beautiful day.

"No, you're right," Billie straightened up his posture.

It was surprising for him to ever say I was right, seeming as I always so wrong and Billie was always so stubborn. "I am?"

"Yeah. It is a nice day. And I appreciate you guys coming over with beer and cake and-" He cut himself off with a chuckle. Flicking the cone birthday hat on his head. "Even these hats,"

"They were at Tre's demand. The hats that is,"

"Don't worry, I could tell,"

We fell into silence continuing with the cigarettes in our hands. But of course, our silence wasn't awkward. I don't think silence with Billie ever had been awkward.

As we were quiet, the shuffling behind us stuck out like a sore thumb. Billie and I turned our heads to see Mike and Tre joining us.

"Can't escape you huh?" Billie teased.

"Hey, look who's cheered up," Mike elbowed Tre.

"Someone's not moody anymore. Guess that cig really did the trick huh?" Tre asked.

"You could say the cig," Billie nodded, smiling. His eyes landed on me for around two seconds. But I got a feeling he was meaning me. Which on instinct, made me grin like an idiot.

"Oh," Tre echoed. "I get it,"

"Hey what?" Mike asked.

"It's not the cig that's cheered him up. It's y/n,"

My cheeks began to heat up slightly.

"What a nice girlfriend you are y/n," Mike joined in with the teasing as they both stood behind us.

I was about to tell him to shut up, but Billie spoke up first.

"She is,"

And now my cheeks were on fire.

I realised that it doesn't matter how long I've known Billie, or dated him. How much anyone mentions his name or how much he flatters me. My face still turns crimson red like I'd just fallen for him yesterday.

And Billie noticed the change of shade in my cheeks, smiling proudly before he stumped out his cig and turned to the two guys. "So if the whole alcohol only in the afternoon rule has been thrown out the window. Does that mean we can have cake for breakfast?"

"If that's what birthday boy wants," Tre shrugged. "We even got candles,"

Billie grinned appreciatively before looking over at me. "Cake?"

I put out my cigarette out before smiling. "Cake for breakfast sounds great right now,"
