Chapter 24 - Green monster [Jenna Lark]
Sunday, midday
While dancing with Michelle, laughing with Arun and Jordy, gossiping with Lacy whenever she had time, Jenna had constantly tried to get Frey's attention. It was to no avail. Frey had been working at first, and she wasn't really happy that he switched places with a guy called Leo, so he could work along side Lacy and Daniel. Jenna knew him well enough he didn't care about Lacy in the least. The two couldn't stand each other.
He wanted to work along side Daniel, and Jenna tried to get Frey to at least show her some affection—even if it would be in the form of innocent smiles and flirtatious remarks, but she didn't get much out of him.
Where did the Frey go that had been flirting with her while baking a cake? Or when they had their date?
Why did he grant her no attention whatsoever whenever Daniel was nearby?
She worried. She felt as if she was losing their stupid battle for his attention, for his love.
For crying out loud, she hated him not too long ago, and now she wanted nothing more than have him send her a smile.
Daniel stood in her way, that much was obvious.
And Daniel was way better at flirting and teasing a guy than she was. Jenna was too scared to hit on the wrong guy to really open up to any guy. She wanted to open up to Frey more than she did, but she didn't know how.
How would she bring up the fact she had an abusive ex-boyfriend that had beaten her to pulp every time she denied him sex? She had been fifteen and not being ready to have sex should've been accepted.
But Robby was eighteen, had his needs, and more than once tried to force himself upon her. And now Jenna freaked out every time Frey pressed a kiss on her cheek or hugged her close to him.
She loved every bit about it, but she still freaked out nonetheless.
And she felt as if keeping things on a platonic level, a superficial level, was pushing Frey away; right in the arms of Daniel. Who had no trouble showing affection even though Mitchel had been abusive to some degree too.
She knew she had to step up her game, or Frey would start thinking she wasn't as interested in him as she was.
And she knew, because once Daniel announced he was going to bring Frey home—like he always did—Jenna had run after them to catch up, because she wanted to invite Frey over to her dance recital the next day; only to find the boys kissing as if there was no tomorrow.
She was shocked, frozen in her spot, while Daniel had pushed Frey against a wall and Frey had moaned when Daniel had moved his hips.
She still couldn't move, scared they would notice her, shamelessly staring at them like some sort of stalker. She simply couldn't look away, not even when her vision blurred by tears that started to form.
Sure, Frey had kissed her before too.
But not like that.
Not with that much longing, that much passion.
She had watched them walk away after a while, and still stood in her spot, crying silently because she felt her heart yarn for Frey to come back and tell her it was all a joke, and he wasn't taking Daniel home right in that moment.
She had eventually turned around, grabbed her bike and gone home, pondering over how to get Frey to like her more.
Her sadness had eventually made place for anger. She wasn't angry at Frey. She knew he was sexually active and she considered it a compliment he hadn't hit on anyone else since Michelle.
He took dating her and Daniel serious enough not to sleep around.
But she was angry at Daniel for seducing Frey like that while they hadn't even gone on a date yet. It was unfair, and it was a backstabbing move from Daniel too.
"Why are you staring daggers at the milk?" Samuel asked while Jenna was silently seething in the kitchen, munching down her breakfast with an angry glare in no particular direction.
In this case, the milk was her victim.
"Those cows couldn't help whatever happened, you know?"
"Shut up." Jenna grumbled back, taking another bite of cereals.
"Jeez, do you have to be hostile on a Sunday morning?"
"It's past noon, you tool." Jenna tore her eyes away from the milk to look at her twin brother, who was in his boxer shorts and a white t-shirt, not caring that she would always get annoyed for him parading around the house like that.
"Oh, well..." Samuel smirked, and Jenna knew he had drunk too much yesterday. As he said, he was practicing to dare Frey for a rematch. One Jenna knew was never going to happen anyway, because Frey didn't do a rematch. Not ever.
If you snooze, you lose. And Samuel had lost.
"So, what's with the seething."
"None of your business, that is."
"Why all the hostility?" Samuel frowned, taking a seat on the opposite side of the table, snatching away the book Jenna wanted to read. "What's this? More geeky Chicklit garbage?"
"It's nothing." It was something. It was a book Frey had recommended, and Jenna had instantly rented from the library. She wanted her own copy—like Frey—but first of all, that would be sad and stalkerish, and secondly; she had a library pass to prevent herself from spending all of her allowance on books.
"If you say it's nothing, it's something. Spill the truth, sis."
"It's literature. High-end literature someone with your amount of brain capacity would never understand." Jenna snatched the book back from him, when her phone buzzed in her pocket.
She ignored the message she had received—recognizing the two-tone buzz to be a message—and took another bite of her cereals.
"Well, it's geek-stuff, keep it in your room. I don't want to get infected with your geek-virus." Samuel waved her off dismissively.
"You're such an idiot." Jenna shook her head. "How can we be related?"
"Hey, being cool was reserved for people born in 2000 like me, and dorkiness was for those born in 2001, like you." Samuel shrugged. "Sucks you missed to good year by two minutes."
"Sucks that '00 kids weren't granted any brain-cells." Jenna rolled her eyes.
"That's the worst comeback I've heard this year, congratulations. You are now officially the geekiest, humourless person of the year 2017." Samuel applauded her with a smirk on his face.
"Like your humour wins prizes..." Jenna rolled her eyes dramatically yet again, before she pushed herself up from the seat. "I'm out, bye."
"Thank god, we can get out of quarantine again in this house."
"Go fuck yourself, Sam."
Jenna hadn't thought things over well enough when she came face to face with Daniel; like she intended to on a Sunday afternoon.
He was actually surprised to find her waiting for him around the corner of his second job, stopping dead in his tracks when she barged in his direction.
She refrained from slapping him in the face, but only just.
"Jenna?" Daniel frowned, stuffing his hands deep in his pocket. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to demand you to explain why you backstabbed me last night."
"Why I did what?" Daniel's frown increased, but his cheeks flushed slightly. Daniel was bad at lying to her; he would always start blushing when he did.
"Why did you go home with Frey?"
"Eh, I almost always bring him home when he's drunk. You know Peter pays me for it."
Jenna crossed her arms annoyed. "That's not what I'm talking about, Danny."
"Than what are you talking about?"
"I saw you two." Jenna spat out, shuddering at the memory. "You had sex with Frey, didn't you?"
"Wh-what? What did you see?'
"You two, groping each other around the corner." Jenna impatiently tapped her foot. "Did you, or did you not have sex with him, Daniel?"
Daniel cringed a bit, his face flustered now, when he slowly nodded. "We... eh, yeah."
"God damn it Daniel!" Jenna cried out. "That's a really shitty move, you know?"
"Why, Jenna?" Daniel hissed back, now starting to look angry too. "Because I managed to finally get some personal time with Frey, after you kept demanding all his attention, every fucking day?"
"Because you used sex to get his attention!" Jenna stomped her foot, and bawled her fists. "You know how he is with sex and you used it. And you know I'm still a virgin and I'm not okay with using sex to seduce a guy! You know I'm still freaking out over what happened with Robby..."
"Sorry, Jenna." Daniel stopped her ranting by raising a hand. "You know I'm still trying to get over Mitchel, and I didn'tuse sex to get his attention. It just happened. Whatever happened with Robby is shit, it sucks, I hate him for doing that to you. But I don't see why it should stop me from sleeping with a guy I actually like enough to forget about a guy I still wish would change for the better. It's the first guy that I like enough to forget about Mitchel."
"It's still a low move." Jenna protested, knowing Daniel was right. He too was still to heartbroken over his ex and Frey was the first that got him to stop thinking back about it.
In Jenna's case, she wasn't exactly longing to go back to her ex Robby. But she did miss the period in which Robby was still trying to win her over, and was the sweetest, kindest guy she ever met. She missed being in love, and trusting a guy enough to let him in.
Frey was that guy to her, but apparently to Daniel too.
And despite them both agreeing to no strings attached dating Frey in the same time, that complicated things.
"Do you even talk to him, like, at all?" Jenna huffed in annoyance. "Or is it purely physical attraction?"
"Do I ever get a chance to bond with him? You're always there, never giving us time on our own. It's like you're scared to lose and to prevent that from happening, you sabotage the chances I get to talk to him."
"Oh, please." Jenna rolled her eyes again. "He just likes hanging out with me more. If he would like you more, he wouldn't be with me all the time, now would he? You know he's probably just lusting after you..."
"Oh, fuck you Jenna. Stop the jealousy act. Green isn't a good colour on you."
"Sorry?"
"You heard me. Stop the jealous act. It's pathetic, really. So, what if I had sex with Frey. And he loved it, FYI." Daniel smirked, and Jenna stared at him with wide eyes. "If he would like you more, like you claim, then why was he having sex with me last night instead of you?"
"I'm telling you, Danny boy." Jenna grumbled. "If you want to play it dirty, fine. Two can play that game."
