Set Life
AN: So this is just all good things. Enjoy a little fun before we get back into the insanity. I will be doing a double update after this chapter.
-------------
"Okay, so we are going to be filming on a lot. We are given passes to get in and to move freely through the lot," Scott explained as he drove. It was the day. The "Thriller" music video was going to happen. That is why Scott, Mitch, and Austin were up almost before the sun to start on the two day process. "The video will be split up into blocks. It isn't a chronological shoot. Some parts that come later will be filmed first since we don't want to have to re do all the make up and costuming."
Mitch nodded as Scott went over everything. "Alright. So that way I am not confused about the sets and organization. What about getting ready for shooting? How does that work?"
Scott kept his eyes on the road as he replied. "Well costuming starts first. Then hair and make up."
"Yeah, Candice and I picked out three outfits for you. The hardest part was finding the boots for Scott," Austin piped up from the backseat. He was trying to finish his breakfast sandwich before they got to set.
Mitch turned a little in his seat to look at his friend. "Speaking of that, what did you say to Kelly about why you weren't riding with her?"
Austin swallowed down the food in his mouth before speaking. "I told her that I had to speak to Scott about some logistical things for the video. I'm pretty sure she thinks that I am trying to plan stuff for the wedding with you, though."
Mitch smirked. That sounded like something he would do. He loved that kind of stuff. Too bad they were going to be too busy to even do any of that at the moment. "It's like one of you watches my back as the other watches my front," he joked.
"I'm taking the front," Austin immediately said. Mitch giggled. Austin even raised his hand.
Scott looked back at Austin in the rearview mirror. "Why do you get the front," he griped.
Austin gave him his usual deadpan look. "Because I'd rather not be up against Mitch's backside, unlike you."
Scott scoffed at Austin's implication. "We would be back to back, thank you!"
Austin rolled his eyes at Scott's defensive words. "Sure you will. Just like you were back to back with Mitch when we were in line to pay for everything on Thursday." This took Mitch out. He was trying not to snort in laughter but Austin's delivery and his comments were too good. He wasn't wrong either. After they found Scott in the electronics section, they went to check out. Scott had wrapped his arms around Mitch's waist from behind and was practically glued to his back as they shuffled along to the conveyer belt to put their items on.
Scott took a hand off the wheel to give Austin a middle finger in the rearview mirror. "That's different and you know it."
Of course Austin wasn't backing down and fired right back in that same unimpressed tone of his. "Is it really?" This set off a back and forth between the two as Mitch was in hysterics in the passenger seat, too worked up to be able to drink his iced coffee.
-----
Mitch held onto Scott's hand as they walked into the HUGE studio set. No matter how much he thought he had prepared himself, he was wrong. This was the real deal. Before it was just going into a booth and singing. He was on a real set for a music video! "Mitch stop staring. And close your mouth," Scott hissed into his ear. Mitch quickly shut his mouth, feeling embarrassed for himself and for Scott. He really shouldn't have done that. He was supposed to be used to this. He had been on many sets in the seven years since PTX started.
"Sorry. I couldn't help it."
"It's okay. Come on. Austin already went to the dressing room. They are setting up for the car scene right there," Scott said as he gestured to what had caught Mitch's eye.
Mitch nodded as he looked at all the people working to plan the first shot. It was crazy how there was space to fit an actual car inside! He let Scott lead him as he thought over the video. Scott was going to be taking the lead as the boyfriend who turns into a werecat and zombie. He was taking the role originally done by a female. The rest of the band were going to be playing versions of themselves in a way. Avi had a special role that was created just for him.
------
The two of them walked into the main dressing room to see Candice and Austin separating the clothes by each band member. "That one is Matt's zombie outfit. It goes over here," the stylist said to Austin. Mitch had made extra sure he knew all the usual people who worked with them so he would not get tripped up.
Austin handed over the outfit so Candice could put it with the other one for Matt. "Can you hand me Mitch's heels," Austin asked as he set up what was likely Mitch's main outfit. The two seemed to be working well even though it was their first time collaborating. Austin and her clicked well when deciding outfits for the duo especially.
"Wow...this is a lot of clothes. How many outfits are here," Scott marveled. Mitch had to agree with his counterpart. The room was filled to the brim.
Candice looked around as she picked up another zombie outfit. "Over thirty for sure. By the way, Lindsey and Craig needed to talk to you about this thing with the choreo." Mitch thought about the day before. They spent until almost ten at night to perfect the dance with the band's resident choreographers. As expected, Kevin and Matt did amazing and needed the least amount of work. Mitch was surprised seeing that Scott wasn't as bad as he thought. He knew that Scott had done a few classes with Lindsey, but Mitch didn't think he had progressed so much. Mitch and Craig had helped Avi with his part. He had a few extra movements unlike the others.
Mitch was brought back from his thoughts by Scott responding. "Okay. I'll go see what it's about. I'll be right back," he said, the last sentence directed at Mitch. He squeezed Mitch's hand and gave him a kiss on his cheek before he left to find the two dancers.
"Get over here, Mitchy. You won't believe what we had to do to get you these penny loafers for the 50s shot."
Mitch smiled, ready to get dressed.
It was about ten minutes later and Candice was making last minute adjustments while Austin was putting Mitch's hair up to be done by Kelly. "So what's going on with you and Scott? Don't act like I didn't see you holding hands and that kiss."
Mitch's eyes widened at the inquiry. Thankfully Candice was kneeling down to work on his pants, so she couldn't see the fear that flashed in his eyes. Austin was a godsend and was able to say something.
"It's Scott and Mitch. You know how they are." His relaxed and almost bored tone was so easy. Mitch wished he had that same ability. To have such chill to answer things on the spot.
Candice nodded from her where she was kneeling. "True. Now tell me how that feels?"
Mitch shifted around and walked in place. "Feels good. Hey, Candice, where is the rest of the band, we've been here for a bit. What gives?" Mitch looked over at Austin to be sure that he came across as current Mitch. He gave him a subtle thumbs up.
Candice looked up from making sure her pinning was right on Mitch's pants. "Well the director does have to be here first, doesn't he?" Wait.....WHAT!?!?!?!?!? Mitch tried to school his features. But he so dearly wanted to scream. That could only mean one thing.... Scott, HIS Scott, was directing "Thriller"!?!? When Candice turned around to look for something, Mitch quickly turned to Austin, his eyes wide and trying to keep his mouth closed.
"Uh....surprise," Austin whispered awkwardly to him. Mitch glared at him. This would have been the kind of information that was supposed to be disclosed before they got there! "I thought Scott told you, I'm sorry." Austin made sure to be quiet enough that Candice couldn't pick up on what they were talking about.
This explained why Scott was fielding calls from so many people for the past week. He didn't get a chance to continue interrogating Austin as the topic of discussion walked in right then. "Sorry that took so long. Lindsey and Craig wanted to be sure about some parts with the zombies. Oh, and the others are coming in now. You ready for them, Austin?"
Austin nodded as he awkwardly shuffled away from Mitch who had turned his glare on Scott. "Must be insane for you since this is your first big video shoot to direct." Scott's face immediately paled. He knew that voice Mitch was using. It was the one he did when he was trying to keep from snapping at him when they were in public.
Scott pulled Mitch to the side as Candice and Austin started setting up for everyone else. Mitch could actually hear Kirstie and Kevin's voices from down the hallway outside the open door. "I am so incredibly sorry, Mitch. It slipped my mind. You knew about this before the memory loss. You were actually the one who talked me into directing this. You said it made perfect sense since I was the one who brought up the Halloween one off in the first place."
Mitch sighed. He didn't like the fact he wasn't warned but he was mostly just so incredibly happy that Scott had this opportunity. "I guess I can't be upset about something that I would have already known if I had my memories. I'm so happy you are doing this, though. You've always talked about this stuff. Wanting to be a jack of all trades."
Scott smiled as he grabbed Mitch's left hand. "You are too sweet. And thank you. I wouldn't have even considered it without you." He bent down a little and gave a soft kiss to Mitch's forehead. Mitch's eyes fluttered shut for that split second, savoring it. "You look cute by the way." Scott was looking down at him with that little smile of his. Mitch couldn't help but stare at those eyes. God, was he gorgeous.
"Scott would you stop with the heart eyes and get over here," Candice chastised. The two of them blushed as Scott let Mitch's hand go.
"Time for my fitting, I guess." Scott walked over to get done up by Candice. At the same time, the rest of the band had walked in.
Kirstie went to Austin. The others sat down to wait for their turns. Avi wasn't going to come in until about half way through the video but had decided to stay and talk with Kevin and Matt. Mitch walked over and sat down next to Avi. "Feels like old times, huh?"
Scott yelped. Everyone looked over. "I told you not to move! Stop day dreaming and stay still!"
Scott was pouting as he rubbed near his waist. "I wasn't! I was trying to think of how to set up the facade of the front of the movie theater!" Candice rolled her eyes at Scott.
Avi chuckled. "Yup. Definitely like old times."
------
The six bandmates had migrated to hair and make up. Mitch was in the chair as Nicole worked on beating his face. The dyed redhead was bubbly and quite the chatter. She was talking about what she wanted to dress as for Halloween. "I was thinking of going as Jessica Rabbit but I don't think I'd do the red dress justice."
"I'm sure you would. You are a bombshell, sis," Mitch replied. So far he was doing okay and nothing seemed amiss. Even so, Scott was right by him.
"Yeah Nic. Confidence makes all the difference," Scott said from where he was leaning against Mitch's make up chair. He was dressed in a letterman jacket, plain tee, and these jeans that fit him in all the right places. Mitch had been sneaking looks at his thighs and butt for the past five minutes.
"Even so, there is no dress that will hold up these girls," the make up artist said, motioning to her large chest. She tapped excess powder off her brush. "Keep your head just like that. Don't look at Scott." She brought the brush to his face and lightly went over his face with it.
Scott laughed. "I guess. Whatever it is you go as, you'll look hot, don't worry."
"Speaking of costumes," Kirstie said from where she was getting her hair done by Kelly, "your episode yesterday was hysterical."
"Yeah it was," Kevin said from next to her as he got a shape up. "When Scott got you right on the behind when you were in that feathered cocktail dress." Mitch blushed at the memory. The spank was quick and precise. Probably from years of practice.
"I can't believe you two are still blind folding each other for challenges," Avi said from the couch on the side with Matt.
Scott laughed nervously. "It's funny. That's all."
Mitch saw Kirstie giggling. "No, what was funny was the blooper where Mitch and Austin were trying to guide you to sit and you ended up laying on the coffee table."
"How did that happen, any way," Matt asked.
Without missing a beat, Mitch said, "Scott doesn't listen for shit." Everyone burst into laughter at the quick remark. Kevin's infamous laughter was the loudest.
Mitch saw the Scott's mouth drop in the mirror in that shocked face he always did. "Mitchy," he gasped out in fake disbelief. "That's it. I need a new partner in crime. How about it, Matt?"
Matt shook his head in the negative. "Nuh uh, bro. I'm not into that kinky stuff."
Another round of laughter from everyone. "I'll offer myself for rotation, with Kevin," Avi said.
Kevin chuckled. "Sure. I'm down for it."
Nicole shook her head with a smile on her face. "Okay, now what color should I do for your eye shadow," she asked herself aloud as she looked through her pallets.
"Give her the same shade of blue from the Future Friends cover."
Mitch and Nicole turned to him. "Aren't you supposed to be directing? I think I can manage getting Mitch's face ready for the cameras without your guidance."
"That's why I have Sam. Besides that color matches my jeans." Sam was the co director who would help direct when Scott had to be in front of the camera. He was a Chapman University grad who had been recommended by one of Scott's college friends.
"Whatever you say, Mr. Director," she replied, grabbing the eye shadow pallet. Mitch smiled up at Scott as Nicole got ready for the next phase of make up.
------
"Okay, cut," Sam shouted, everyone stopping in place. Mitch was reaching for Scott who had turned his back on him, his body jerking in pain. Scott straightened his back from his hunched over position. Mitch grimaced when he heard the cracking of his bones. Scott really needed to see the chiropractor after this. He relaxed his own body, looking around at the rest of the band. They were already moving to the catering table to get some food between takes.
Mitch looked over to Austin who was adjusting the outfits of some of the extras with Candice. He was so hyper focused right now that Mitch didn't want to bother him. Instead he looked for Scott. The blond was over with Sam talking about the take. In the few hours since they started, he saw how serious Scott was taking this opportunity. He didn't want anything to go amiss. He looked over every take for any little thing that went wrong. When Avi had been added into the equation of the music video, Scott's ability to adjust and create a new element within the music video was astounding.
It was crazy how Scott's love of filming him and making YouTube videos had morphed into a true passion for the cinematic arts. Mitch could definitely see a future for the older man, as a music video director. He could even direct musicals, for stage and film. His eye for detail was insane. Maybe it wasn't out there to think of them possibly going for the acclaimed EGOT.
He turned away from Scott and went to the catering table. Avi and Matt were eating finger sandwiches while Kevin was having a bowl of fruit and Kirstie some sort of green smoothie. "I swear I was out of time on the walk when the music started playing," Matt commented.
"I'm sure you did better than I ever could. Are you guys sure my face wasn't shown in that one scene? I don't want my reveal spoiled," Avi said.
Kevin and Kirstie sighed, almost in unison. The two seemed to have a natural connection with that stuff. From what Mitch saw in all the stuff Scott showed him, they had a great friendship. It was kind of sad they had never considered dating, but given the timing with exes, it never happened. "Would y'all chill. If there is anything wrong or out of place, Scott will be sure to tell us," Kevin said, plopping a cube of watermelon into his mouth.
"Yeah Av, trust Scott. He knows what he's doing," Mitch chimed in. The shorter brunette swiped Avi's food out of his hands and put it in his mouth. He gave a big close lipped smile before munching down.
Avi rolled his eyes as he grabbed another finger sandwich. "The last time I did that, he almost crashed us into a gate in The Shire." Mitch's brows furrowed. What the hell was Avi on about?
"You know Scott doesn't know directions to save his life," Kirstie countered. Mitch was so confused. He knows his current self would definitely know what was going on. He so wished Scott was there to help him!
Avi grumbled as he stuffed half a finger sandwich in his mouth. Avi's beard had been shaped up and he looked very distinguished. Before that, he had been working on the whole 'wild man' look. "That's not the problem. He stepped on the gas! We almost went careening off the thing!"
Lucky for Mitch, he wasn't the only one who was lost on what the conversation was about. "Uh, yeah, new guy here, what are y'all talking about," Matt asked.
Kevin decided to answer him, and unknowingly Mitch too. "When we were in New Zealand during the world tour, we went to the Lord of the Rings set. Avi's dream destination during tour. We got to ride around in golf carts. Well Avi made the mistake of jumping in with Scott. There was this guy who was a part of the tour who kept being a little too nice to Mitch. Apparently, when they were supposed to be meeting us at one spot, Scott decided to try to scare the tour guide."
Mitch wanted to face palm. That definitely sounded exactly like something that Scott would do. "How do you deal with him," Avi basically whined.
All he could do was shake his head. Scott traumatizing their friends with his foolish actions, one friend at a time. He leaned over and grabbed himself a smoothie. "We just get each other. Now if you will excuse me, I'm going to see if we can move onto the next part."
He slipped away from the quartet, who had seemed to move on from Scott's impulsive ways and onto the amazing work that Candice and Austin did on the outfits. Mitch spotted Scott with Sam and a few other guys. They seemed to be in a deep discussion. Mitch didn't want to butt in, though. He slowly walked over, figuring he'd wait. But as if he could sense him, Scott looked over at him. "Hey Mitch. Is something wrong?"
Mitch tried to seem comfortable and nonchalant. "Uh no. Just wanted to see what you were up to." He didn't want to stop the conversation that the five men were having. It seemed pretty important.
Scott laughed a little. "Come here," he said and had his arm extended, offering Mitch to come closer. Mitch couldn't resist and walked over. Scott brought him to his side, his hand secure on his hip. Mitch smiled up at him. Scott kept his hand there as he went back into the conversation. "Okay, now I think we should pull back on the dolly. Give it a more wider effect. Don't leave the camera idle."
The guys across from him nodded. "Alright. Got it. Now what effect do you want for the zombie rising?"
"Sam and I talked it over. We want an overhead shot moving down and go into landscape view as it goes into the cemetery. Then we slowly move in on Avi."
Mitch couldn't help himself. He looked up at Scott with admiration. He sounded so in control and prepared. He was.....such a man. Mitch pressed himself even closer against Scott's side. Mitch committed every little thing to memory as Scott did his job. The way his eyebrows, although fair, looked so stern over his eyes. Those eyes that were so focused and direct. His jaw was so incredibly strong from the side and covered in scruff. He was so comfortable as he talked amongst the men around them. Mitch could even see the light sheen of sweat that had accumulated on Scott's face. The sweat actually seemed to enhance the cologne and Scott's natural scent. Mitch felt like he was going to melt.
As he watched Scott talking, he was pretty sure he saw Sam look over at him for a second from Scott's left side. Mitch didn't really pay it any mind. He was trying to listen to Scott be a boss. "Hey Scott, I think we've got enough pointers for now. I'll make sure everything runs smoothly while you are doing your scenes. Relax and take some time with your boy," Sam said and nodded over at Mitch.
Scott looked conflicted. "Are you sure?"
Sam laughed. "Yes. Right guys," he said to the other three men. All of them agreed with Scott's co director. Sam gave them a smiled as he walked away with the three men.
Scott sighed as if he was releasing some pent up tension. He turned his head to look at Mitch. "Hi," he said softly and just a bit shy.
"Hi," Mitch said back with a giggle. He was holding his half empty smoothie in his hands, almost forgotten as he stared at Scott. Scott's pupils seemed to be so large as he looked at him. They also seemed even more blue.
"Have you eaten anything?"
Mitch shrugged. "Just stole a bit of Avi's food."
"Come on. We can't have you filming on an empty stomach. I made sure catering brought in some amazing vegetarian options for you. There's some sweet potato fries and this veggie fondue that are to die for."
He turned them around, still attached at the hip, towards the catering table. "Ooh. Sounds delicious. What else did you get?"
The two of them walked along, Scott being his usual dog like self, excitedly telling Mitch all about the food options he had picked out.
