Kendall Knight x Reader - Big Time Family Meltdown
Warning!!! - Use of degrading language and mentions of abusive family members. Also, slight swearing, and it is a little long.
As time ticked closer to Christmas, you got more and more excited. It was the first Christmas you would spend with your long-distance boyfriend, Kendall Knight. Kendall was one of the lead singers of the up-and-coming boy band, Big Time Rush. You met him backstage at one of his concerts six months ago, and you hit it off ever since. Now, he was flying across the country to spend Christmas with you and your family.
There was just one problem; he was going to meet your family. You weren't worried about your immediate family, but your extended family could be a pain. They were bossy and demanding, but worst of all, they were disrespectful to you and your mother. They always found a way to attack the things you loved, but this year, you were determined to have a happy, merry Christmas.
"Merry Christmas!" your mother greeted as you walked into your old childhood home, "We have a surprise for you!"
"What is it?" you hummed as you hung up your coat and kicked slushy snow off of your boots.
"Look who we picked up early!" your mom smirked as a tall figure with blonde hair and green eyes walked into the entrance hall to greet you.
It was Kendall.
You nearly squealed as you rushed to him, your arms pulling him as close to you as you physically could as you took in his light pine scent. His warmth felt like heaven on your ice-cold skin.
"Hello, sweetheart," he whispered into your ear, "How have you been?"
"I'm much better now that you're here," you smiled widely as you pulled back to stare into his vibrant green eyes.
"Happy to be of service," he smirked down at you, his arms snaking around your waist as he stared at your lips.
"I don't mean to disturb you love birds," your mother interrupted, forcing you to focus your attention back onto her, "but your father will be here soon with your grandparents. However, Mike's gang might even beat them here."
"Mike's gang?" Kendall questioned, his nose crinkling cutely in confusion.
"My Uncle Mike and his family," you forced yourself to giggle. Despite your joyful reunion with Kendall, you worried about what your family would do when they got there. Your stomach churned at the thought, but you refused to let Kendall know.
"Would you like any help, Mrs. (L/N)?" Kendall offered your mom as he nodded towards the kitchen where pots and pans were heating up on the stove.
"Oh no, no, no," your mother reassured him with a smile, "Enjoy some time with (Y/N) before the family arrives."
But unfortunately, there wasn't much time to spend with him before the doorbell rang.
"I got it!" you called to your mother who had already returned to the kitchen. Kendall stood by and prepared himself to meet the first members of your family.
You gasped excitedly as you peeped outside to see who the new arrival was. "Krissy!" you yelled before throwing the door open with a flourish, "Come in, come in."
"Ah, hey girl," your cousin, Krissy, greeted, her long, glossy brown hair flowing freely in the winter breeze, "It feels like it's been forever since I've seen you!"
"It's been way too long," you agreed as she set her bags on the floor and hugged you, "But there's someone I need you to meet."
"No way," she gaped as she stared over your shoulder, "You don't mean..."
"Oh, I mean," you smirked deviously at her.
"You mean to tell me that your 'special friend' is Kendall freaking Knight?!" Krissy gasped, her mouth hanging wide open.
"Just a friend?" Kendall asked with mock hurt shining in his eyes, "I'm hurt-"
But before he could finish, someone new joined you.
The door burst open, revealing a petite woman with a frown permanently etched onto her face. She waddled in, her graying hair loosely pulled up into a ponytail. You could feel her negativity radiate into the room.
"Get out of my way!" her shrill voice sounded, "Why are all of these bags in here? Get them out of my way this instant!"
Kendall's eyes widened like he had seen a ghost as he turned to you for answers. You merely shook your head before bending down with Krissy to move the bags.
"Who is this?" the older woman quipped as she studied Kendall, "I thought we agreed that we weren't bringing the hoodlums that live in this godforsaken town in for the holidays!"
"Aunt Charlene, this is my boyfriend, Kendall Knight," you introduced calmly, "He is-"
"Nope!" she screamed before you could finish, "Get him out right now! We agreed, no hoodlums for Christmas!"
"He's from Minnesota, and he lives in Los Angeles at the moment," you explained, "He's part of Big Time Rush, that new boy band that's been topping the charts lately."
"That's funny," she scoffed, "I saw a story about them in People Magazine, and there is no way one of them would ever date a slutty whore like you. Now get this loser out of here! And hurry!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Kendall asked, and you could sense the anger building inside of him.
"Look at this place! All these young people do around here is party and hook up with people! (Y/N) even tried to ruin my daughter when they went on a vacation together last summer! (Y/N) met three guys and exchanged numbers and social media with all of them, and convinced my poor Krissy to do the same!" Aunt Charlene ranted to your boyfriend, making you turn red with anger, "And now she's embarrassed that I exposed her to you!"
You bit your tongue to hold back the comments that threatened to spill from your lips, knowing that they would only make it worse.
"Excuse me?" Kendall asked in disbelief.
"You're not excused, now get out!" Aunt Charlene ordered him.
"Charlene, he is (Y/N)'s boyfriend, and he is welcome here for the holidays," your mom interjected as she exited the kitchen, "Now leave the boy alone."
"We agreed that none of these disgusting teens from around here would ever be allowed in the house while we were around, Catherine, or did you forget that?" Aunt Charlene asked rudely, "Now, make him leave, or we will get back in that car and have our own celebration this year! We both know your husband would be very disappointed to know your bad hospitality forced us to leave."
"First of all, it was my husband's idea to invite Kendall over for Christmas dinner, and he would be very disappointed to hear how you welcomed such an important guest, especially when he arrived first. Secondly, he's from Minnesota, not here," your mother reiterated, "He's a good guy in a popular band. He flew all the way from Los Angeles to see my daughter, and I will not ruin this for her, and neither will you!"
"Then we'll just leave!" Aunt Charlene declared with a flourish of her arms as Uncle Mike entered the room with armfuls of suitcases.
"Turn around, Mike, we're leaving!" Aunt Charlene instructed her husband.
"Oh, shut up, you old bat! I came here to see my brother and his family, and I will do it if it's the last thing I do!" Uncle Mike yelled as he set the luggage down with a huff.
Aunt Charlene merely huffed before marching up the stairs to the room she always stayed in when she came down for the holidays. You sighed with relief once she was gone, but even then, she sought to disturb the peace.
"She better not share a room with that man-whore! I won't have it!" she yelled down to your mother.
You turned to Kendall, whose face was filled with complete and utter shock.
"What...was...that?" he asked hesitantly as if he was afraid she would come back down if he spoke too loudly.
"Oh, I'm so sorry about that, son. Age has not done her well," Uncle Mike apologized as he approached Kendall with an outstretched hand, "I'm Mike, (Y/N)'s uncle. And you are?"
"I'm Kendall Knight, (Y/N)'s boyfriend," Kendall introduced politely, "I live out in the Los Angeles area to pursue a music career with my best friends. Now, not to be rude or anything, but what was that?"
"She's...crazy," Krissy explained, "It's her way or no way."
"I'm so sorry..." you mumbled as you reached down and intertwined your fingers with Kendall's, "It's nothing against you, she just really hates me and my mother."
"But why? You guys are amazing!" Kendall complimented.
"She wanted my brother to marry her best friend, but they just didn't click," Uncle Mike recounted, "Instead, he married Catherine Davis. Charlene never got over it, and now she hates everything about Catherine and her daughter."
"Like I said, she's crazy," Krissy reiterated.
"Okay..." Kendall trailed off nervously. You could tell that something was bothering him as his eyes darted around the room. Your heart wrenched at the thought of your family causing him discomfort for the holidays.
"Did my parents show you your room, Kendall?" you asked in an attempt to distract him.
"No, I don't believe they did," he hummed, though he refused to make eye contact with you.
"Here, I'll show you," you smiled as you picked your bags off of the ground, "Krissy, you can take your bags to our room, like usual."
"Awesome," she smiled, "I'll be able to get away from the hag for a while."
You giggled lightly at the childish namecalling as the three of you walked up the stairs, each holding a suitcase of your own. You stopped by your old bedroom to drop off your bags before taking Kendall to your mom's home office.
There was a single twin bed pushed against the light purple wall. The bed had a simple navy blue bedding draped over it with three large pillows in matching cases. There was a soft, fluffy rug lying on the floor at the side of the bed. In the corner of the room sat a large desk with a desktop computer sitting on top of it.
"I hope it's okay," you gulped nervously as you awaited his reaction, "I'd share my room with you, but it's a tradition for me and Krissy to share a room during the holidays. Plus, it would only give my aunt something else to complain about-"
"About your aunt..." Kendall cut you off suddenly, "Now, don't take this the wrong way, but I just want to make sure that I have the right information...What happened last summer?"
"Oh, that," you rolled your eyes, "She overexaggerates everything. See, the cousins always go on vacation together once a year. If we manage to get to the hotel's pool before everyone else, we play this game. We split into two teams, and each team takes a turn trying to get a tennis ball into the other team's goal. We would normally take up the entire pool with our shenanigans. So, as we played, three brothers showed up and asked to join. They hung out with us, and by the end of it, everyone was exchanging Snapchat usernames. No one gave out any numbers, and no one was flirting or anything. I didn't even force Krissy to exchange either! My aunt just likes to make me look like the bad guy."
"So, I don't have anything to worry about?" Kendall hummed as his arms wrapped around your waist, his muscles relaxed compared to how tense he was a few minutes ago, "No guys I have to beat up?"
"No, you can relax," you giggled, "Try not to take anything she says seriously. She's a real grouchy piece of work."
"As long as I get to spend Christmas with my gorgeous girlfriend, I'll put up with any annoying family member," Kendall reassured you.
"Thank you so much, babe," you smiled, "You truly are the best guy I have ever met."
"Well, of course," he smirked, "I am Kendall Knight after all." He quickly leaned down to press a cheeky kiss to your lips.
Suddenly, you heard a sharp knocking on the wooden door frame, making you jump almost ten feet in the air.
"Woah, didn't mean to scare you," Krissy laughed, "Your Dad is here with Grandma and Grandpa, and they brought guests!"
Your curiosity peaked as you locked eyes with Kendall, both of you wondering who the surprise guests could possibly be. You followed Krissy down the stairs, only to see two large males standing in the entrance hall.
"Tommy! Sam!" you greeted as you ran to your cousins, "I didn't know you guys were coming!"
"Surprise!" Tommy shouted before digging his fingers into your sides, making you squeal.
"NO, TOMMY! NOT MY SIDES!" you laughed as he tickled you, making you collapse on the ground.
The tickle attack stopped as quickly as it started. Tommy merely stared down at you with the goofiest face he could muster.
"You haven't changed a bit," you commented as you rolled your eyes at your older cousin.
"Ooh, that was a fun little trick," Kendall mused evilly as he strolled over to where you laid on the floor, "I'll have to remember that."
"Don't you dare!" you ordered as you covered your sides instinctively.
"Fine, fine," Kendall relented as he bent down to help you off of the ground.
"Who's this?" Sam asked once he noticed Kendall.
"Hey, I'm Kendall," Kendall introduced with an outstretched hand for the millionth time tonight after he made sure you were safely on your feet, "I'm (Y/N)'s boyfriend."
"Oh, Mom is going to love you," Sam replied sarcastically.
"Believe me, he knows," Krissy interjected, "He's already met her.
"You poor, poor thing," Tommy replied.
"How is this house still intact?" Sam laughed, "I thought she would've burst into flames the second she met you."
"I could've sworn she did," Kendall chuckled.
"You leave Charlene alone," Grandpa Harris ordered from his place in the recliner, "It's you guys who did that to her."
The cousins shared awkward looks as you tried to ignore your grandpa's ignorant claims.
"What's his problem...?" Kendall whispered in your ear.
"He's just always sided with Charlene," you shrugged, "Maybe it's because she gave him the most grandchildren, and three-quarters of them will carry on the family name. He's old school like that."
Kendall chuckled. "That would be the lamest excuse."
"Shut up," you laughed as you playfully punched his upper arm.
"What's all the laughing about?" you heard the shrill voice of Aunt Charlene ask as she walked down the stairs.
"What? People can't laugh?" Krissy called as she walked into the kitchen to get a glass of sparkling grape juice.
"Not if it's those two," Aunt Charlene groaned as she nodded towards you and Kendall.
"Wow, no wonder you told me to bring a crucifix," Kendall muttered under his breath as he rolled his eyes dramatically, making you snort as you tried to contain your laughter.
"Excuse me?" Aunt Charlene demanded as she walked over to you, "What did you just say, boy?"
"No worse than what you've said to me," he remarked with a smirk. You elbowed his side, urging him to stop, but it was too late.
"You will not speak to me like that, boy!" Aunt Charlene thundered, "How dare you come into this house and act like you can do whatever you want? We don't even want your kind here. You're lucky I haven't kicked you out yet! You should be thanking me for letting you even sit in my presence! So, if I hear one more word out of you, boy-"
"Alright, that's ENOUGH!" you roared as you glared at Aunt Charlene. It was one thing for her to insult you and your mother constantly, but you refused to let her bully your boyfriend. You drew the line there.
"How dare you?" she gaped in utter disbelief as she never expected to hear anything from you besides meek explanations, "You listen here, missy-"
"No, you listen here," you snarled as you cut her off, "I'm sick and tired of you always coming here and putting everyone down. I'm a good person with a lot of accomplishments to celebrate. Just this year alone, I had straight A's in all of my courses, attended two leadership seminars, won a few writing contests, competed in a states swim meet, and completed a few internships. I'm making something of myself, and this town, believe it or not, prepared me for it!"
"You're lying! You're pathetic and worthless, and your town only made you worse!" she screamed with a glare. If this were a cartoon, steam would be pouring from her ears.
"No, you just can't stand the fact that I'm doing better than anyone could've hoped!" you roared, "You wanted me to be a failure to punish my father for breaking your friend's heart all those years ago! But guess what? That's not going to happen! I'm going to do great things, and my Dad is going to stay happily married to my Mom!"
"(Y/N), I can't believe you would ever talk to such a respectable lady like that, especially your Aunt Charlene," Grandpa Harris piped up, but you ignored him easily.
"I will not stand here and be talked to like this by some ratchet whore," Aunt Charlene rolled her eyes as her argument weakened, "Come on, Krissy, we're leaving, with or without your father."
But Krissy didn't move.
"Krissy, listen to your mother," Grandpa Harris ordered, "And Mike, you ought to support your wife!" His words made Aunt Charlene's head swell with a false sense of dignity, making her smirk triumphantly.
Nothing was as satisfying as watching Krissy figuratively slap the smirk off of her face.
"No! I'm tired of following your every wicked order, Mom!" Krissy almost screamed with passion, "I love (Y/N) and Aunt Cathy, and I'm tired of you ruining my time with them! They're cooler than you'll ever be!"
"Why, I never!" Aunt Charlene spat venomously, "Who could've known I raised such a disappointment?"
"Mom, leave Krissy alone!" Sam spoke up, "She's a good kid, and so is (Y/N). Stop making a scene, it's honestly embarrassing."
"Tommy? Do you agree with these rejects?" Aunt Charlene asked as she turned to her eldest son.
"Mom, they're not the problem here. You are," Tommy deadpanned without a hint of emotion in his voice, "It really is embarrassing. We're the guests here, and every year you show up and act like you run the place. You're fifty-something, you should know how to act. Now, (Y/N)'s boyfriend is here. So, stop ruining Christmas for everyone. He traveled all this way to spend time with her, not to meet your crazy ass."
"Fine! Be like that, you traitors! I'm going to go stay at the Mariott Hotel in town then!" she announced before storming out of the house and slamming the front door behind her.
Suddenly, Grandpa Harris got up from the recliner. "I'm going to bed. I can't believe you guys treated your mother like that!" he huffed as he turned to his wife, "Come on, Addie."
"I'm going to sit down here with my grandchildren for a while," Grandma Addie said, "We haven't even had dinner yet."
"Whatever," Grandpa Harris waved a hand before climbing up the stairs to his room.
"Well...that was something," your mother piped up after exiting the kitchen, "Anyone ready for dinner?"
"Yes, I'm starving," Sam chimed in with an excited smile as if nothing had ever happened, "What's for dinner, Aunt Cathy?"
"I'll be right in," you smiled at your mom as you took a moment to calm yourself. Kendall stayed back to check on you after the boisterous fight with Charlene.
"Is everything alright, love?" he asked softly as he hugged you from behind.
"Yes," you nodded as you turned around to face him, but you couldn't meet his gaze, "It's just...I'm so sorry. This was supposed to be our first magical Christmas together, but instead, you just got front row seats to the most dramatic family meltdown of the year..."
"Baby, don't you worry about that," he soothed, "Everything will be fine as long as I can still call you my amazing girlfriend. Believe it or not, I have a crazy family too. Like Katie."
You giggled. "You can not call your little sister crazy, especially not after meeting my aunt."
"But (YYYYYYYY/NNNNNNNN)," he whined.
"I mean it, mister," you threatened, making him laugh.
"Come on, let's go enjoy the amazing meal your mom prepared for us with your family. I'm sure they're getting worried about us," Kendall suggested.
"Alright, baby," you smiled, "Let's do it."
With that, you walked into the dining room, determined to enjoy Christmas with the family members who really loved you.
