big time home

It had been thirteen days since Dani had been back home in Colorado, and great was an understatement of how it was going.

Her mom's lumpectomy was a success, and she has been feeling better and better every single day.

While home, Dani has gotten the time to make up for lost time with not only her mom and brother but also her grandmother, Nana, whom she hadn't seen since she left.

While home, Dani has had the inspiration to write more songs in the last two weeks than she has in almost the last two months.

"Luca! Come on, or you're going to miss your bus... again!" Dani yelled from the bottom of the staircase at the coutertop as she finished putting the boys lunch together.

"I'm ready." Luca said, approaching the girl, grabbing the bag as she pulled him into a hug, but quickly let go as she began coughing.

"What happened? Did you fall into the bottle of cologne?" Dani questioned, causing the blonde boy to lift his eyebrow as he sniffed his shirt.

"Too much?" Luca asked as Dani noticed the familiar bus pulling onto their street.

"Maybe a bit." Dani said, nodding as she smiled at the boy."But your bus is already here, so you gotta go. Have a good day!"

"Bye!" Luca called over his shoulder as he rushed out the door, quickly racing to his bus stop, making it just in time as the bus came to a stop as he touched the sign.

"Morning, sweetie." Dani heard from behind her, causing her to turn, spotting her mom standing at the coffee pot with a smile.

"Morning mom. I could have gotten that for you; you should be resting." Dani sighed, approaching the lady.

Yeah, well, I've been resting for the last 10 days, sweetheart. I think I've gotten enough rest." Debbie said, letting out a light chuckle and placing her hand on her daughter's cheek. "Thank you for all the help, but my doctor cleared me to go back to work on Monday."

"But that's in 3 days." Dani gasped, causing her mom to raise her eyebrow. "It hasn't even been a full two weeks yet, mom. Are you sure you don't want to take another week?"

"As much as I love being home with my beautiful children, I think it's time for things to get back to normal around here." Debbie said, sending the girl a small smile. "Starting with me cooking us some breakfast this morning, how about some French toast?"

"Well, I do love your French toast." Dani confessed, causing her mom to chuckle as she pulled her daughter into a hug. "I guess I should probably be getting back to the Palm Woods."

"There's no rush." Debbie said, turning and making her way to get the ingredients for the breakfasts for her and her daughter.

"Mom, we talked about this." Dani sighed, leaning against the counter as she watched her mom. "I would come out here to help with Luca until you got back on your feet. I can stay until Wednesday to make sure everything goes smoothly, but after that, I really do have to go. I'm under a contract, and I made a promise to my friends."

"I know. I know." Debbie said, turning to face her daughter and letting out a sigh as she dropped her arms to her side as she approached her. "It's just... I really enjoyed you being home and being around. But you go, you go. I'll be fine; just make you come visit, okay?"

"I will, I promise."

"Now sit and tell me all about that tall blonde you kissed before we left." Debbie smiled, leaning against the counter as she placed her head on her head, causing Dani to laugh.

...

Dani decided to pass time by doing one of the things that helps take her mind off most things, and that's baking.

The boys called it Dani's Donut Disturb Time. They thought they were geniuses; she thought they were dorks, but she had to love her boys.

"Oo, it smells delicious in here." Nana said, entering the kitchen with a big grin as she approached her granddaughter and placed a kiss on her head. "How are you doing, darling?"

"Good. How are you, Nana?" Dani asked, smiling at the woman as she placed the hot pan on the stove before holding out the plate of cool treats towards her grandmother. "Cookie?"

"Well, I do enjoy your cookies." Nana confessed, causing Dani to chuckle as the older woman took a chocolate chip cookie before letting out a hum as she took a bite. "Almost as good as mine."

"Well, I did learn from the best." Dani chuckled, pulling the woman in for a hug before taking a seat beside her at the island. "So did my mom tell you about going back to work?"

"Oh yes. A busy bee that woman is." Nana said, shaking her head. "But if it's what she wants, who are we to stop her?"

"I know, but she just had surgery." Dani explained, looking over at her grandmother and shaking her head.

"Yes, and she's feeling much better." Debbie pointed out, taking a seat beside her daughter, causing Dani to look over at her mom, who placed her hand over hers. "Honey, I was cleared by my doctor; everything is fine now."

"Is it?" Dani questioned. "I know they said they got it, but what if it comes back? What happens?"

"Let's not worry about that until we get to that point, okay?" Debbie said, sending the girl a smile. "If we get to that point,"

"Your mom's right, it's nothing to dwell on." Nana spoke, smiling at the duo. "We should be celebrating that you, my dear, beat cancer. Not everyone can say that. And our dear Dani is home for the first time in over two years. Invite some friends over and have a good time. You deserve it."

This caused the young mother-daughter duo to share a smile before Dani placed her head on her mom's shoulder.

"I did make enough treats to feed a village." Dani jokingly said, causing her mom and grandma to laugh.

"No, no, no. I don't need to celebrate anything. I'm just glad that I'm in remission and that I can spend more time with my family." Debbie said, smiling at the two most important girls in her life.

"It's whatever you want, dear." Nana patted her daughter's hand with a smile before turning her attention to her granddaughter. "You won't believe who I ran into on my way up here. Tessa Avery. I would have thought those lovely people would have moved out to California or something, but no, they're still right next door. She also told me her kids were in town for a few days before they jetted off on tour. I told her how you were home, and she said she was dying to see your beautiful face."

"I miss her." Dani sighed, pouting at the thought of the lady.

"You should go see her then." Debbie suggested, smiling at the girl. "You know she has definitely missed you."

...

Dani had spoken to Mac again since Christmas.

Dani didn't feel like there was any bad blood between the pair anymore; she had moved on with her life, as had he, so there was no reason for her to keep pent-up anger.

He was her best friend first, and he knew her better than most, and that said a lot.

Dani made her way up to the familiar home that she grew up always going to; it was her home away from home.

It's where her best friends lived, and it's where you could find her every Friday night for pizza and a movie.

The sound of music was heard from the backyard as Dani made her way to the front door.

On the door, there was a sign that read, Come around back :)

Dani made her way to the side of the house to the familiar white gate with the sticking lock that you always had to jiggle three times for it to come open.

As she stepped into the back area, she was immediately hit with nostalgia; almost everything was the same as she remembered, with only a few changes here and there.

The Avery family was all lounging around the back yard with the boys in the pool, their dad on the grill, and Mads sitting in the chairs with her mom.

"Oh my god, Dani!" Mads squealed, quickly racing to the girl, but quickly stopped noticing the containers in her arms.

"Here, let me grab that." Mark Avery offered, grabbing the containers from Jennings girl with a smile.

"Thanks, dad." Mads said, smiling at the man before throwing her arms around the girl as she pulled her into a tight hug. "What are you doing in Colorado?"

"I came to visit my family." Dani explained, causing Mads eyes to go wide, causing Dani to nod.

"So that means you guys are..." Mads asked.

"Me and my mom are better than ever." Dani admitted, causing Mads to squeal once again, pulling the girl into another hug.

"Don't hog her; we want to say hi too, Mads." Maverick said, pushing his little sister out of the way as he smiled at the Jennings girl before pulling her into a hug. "Dani, it's good to see you in good old Colorado."

"I'm happy to be here."

Dani gave a hug to Myles and Maison before she came face-to-face with Mac, causing the blonde boy to grin from ear to ear.

"Dani!" Mac exclaimed, pulling the girl into a tight hug as he lifted her off the ground, spinning her in a circle before placing her back down. "What are you doing here?"

"Not to visit you." Dani teased, smirking at the boy, causing his brothers to oo. "I came to see your beautiful mom."

"I believe I was called." The woman spoke, causing Dani to quickly turn around, coming face-to-face with Tessa Avery, her second mother figure. "Is that my beautiful daughter, Danielle."

"Mama Tess." Dani pouted as she approached the woman before she was pulled into a warm, motherly embrace that Dani missed dearly. "I missed you so much."

"I missed you too." Tessa said, letting the girl go as she placed a hand on the girl's cheek before leading her to a chair with Mads. "It wasn't the same around here without you.""

"I hope you don't mind; I brought you guys some goods." Dani chuckled, gesturing towards the container that was now sitting on the table in front of them. "One thing led to another, and I made cookies as if I were still back at the Palm Woods."

"How's it there?' Tessa asked, grabbing a cookie as she listened to the girl. "Living out there on your own?"

"It's amazing! I'm doing what I love, and I get to work with the most amazing people every single day." Dani gushed. "The people I work with have pretty much become my family. You know, it's my home away from home. Yeah, they're all amazing people, and I wouldn't change the experience for anything in the world."

"It sounds like you're happy where you are." Tessa smiled.

"For the first time in a while, I can actually say I am." Dani admitted, nodding her head, smiling. "I am really happy."

"I like this look on you." Mads said, grinning from ear to ear. "We love happy Dani."

"I like happy Dani too." Dani said, nodding her head before an idea popped into her head. "Mama T, could you do something for me?"

...

"I'm home." Dani called out, stepping into her house a few hours later.

"We're in the living room." Debbie spoke, causing Dani to follow her voice to find her mom and brother sitting on the floor on either side of the table playing Jenga.

"You better watch him, mom; he likes to cheat." Dani warned.

"I do not." Luca exclaimed, looking over at his sister, causing his jaw to drop. "Woah."

Debbie looked over to her daughter, noticing her new appearance, causing her to smile.

"Does it look bad?" Dani asked, running her hand through her now shorter hair.

"No, you look beautiful." Debbie smiled, causing Dani to smile.

"It looks sick." Luca said, nodding his head, causing Dani to chuckle. "Wanna play? I won't cheat this time."

"I knew it, you little cheater." Dani gasped, pushing her brother over and taking a seat beside him as she shared a smile with her mom.

"Alright, what are we going to play?" Debbie clapped her hands, opening the chest and looking through the board games.

...

It was the day Dani was dreading but was also looking forward to-the day she headed back to LA.

"Make sure you come back to visit, okay?" Debbie said, pulling her daughter into a tight hug as she let a few tears fall. "Anytime, any day."

"You too." Dani spoke into her mom's shoulder before looking over at her brother. "Be good for mom, alright."

"When aren't I good?" Luca questioned, causing both of them to send the boy a look. "I will, I promise."

"Come visit soon, alright. The guys and Katie ask about you all the time." Dani said, pulling the boy into a hug. "But make sure you ask first this time."

"Got it."

"Flight 111 to Los Angeles is now boarding. Flight 111 to Los Angeles is now boarding."

"I gotta go." Dani announced, sending her family a smile. "I love you guys."

"I love you, baby." Debbie said, blowing the girl a kiss.

"Love you, Dani."

Dani gave the pair one last glance before she made her way toward her gate.

...

Kendall stood at the window as he watched the plane that held his now-ex-girlfriend with a sad look before turning around and looking at the boys.

He let out a sigh before he made his way to the trio, but what he didn't see was the short blonde girl walking in the same direction, looking down as she typed away on her phone, causing the duo to collide.

"Sorry."

The Knight boy reached down to grab the book she dropped, quickly noticing the familiar print. "Dani?"

That caused the blonde girl to look up as their eyes locked, causing a smile to grow on both of their faces.

"Kendall."
