big time decision
The couple slowly turned to find Jo Taylor standing there with a suitcase at her side.
"Jo." Kendall stuttered out, slowly dropping his arms from the Jennings girl's waist. "You're in New Zealand filming a movie—three movies."
"Well, the studio tested the first film, and the test audience hated it, then burned down the theater, then the studio canceled the sequels, and then I came here." Jo explained, glancing between the duo.
"Jo." Dani breathed out, walking towards the girl. "Hi."
"Hi. So are you guys dating?" Jo asked, confused.
"Uh..." Dani started, glancing over at the boy who stood frozen in the elevator before looking back at the Taylor girl. "Yeah, we are, actually."
Jo looked from Dani to Kendall, causing Dani to slowly look over at her boyfriend with a nervous look.
Kendall glanced between his girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend, and without a word, the boy quickly raced forward, tapping on buttons, causing the door of the elevator to quickly close.
Dani and Jo looked over at each other. Dani sent the girl a small smile, but Jo didn't return the gesture. She let out a sigh before turning around and walking away.
"Yay, Jo's back!" Dani muttered to herself, letting out a sigh as she glanced over her shoulder as she watched one of her best friends walk away from her.
...
Dani could feel the tension drifting through the halls of the Palm Woods, and she didn't like the feeling one bit.
She knew she needed to talk to the Knight boy, so she made her way up to apartment 2J.
To her surprise, as she got closer to the door, she found it wide open, causing her to walk in to find three of her four boys.
"Hey, guys." Dani greeted them, causing their heads to quickly snap over to the girl.
"Dani, hey."
"Dani."
"What's up?"
"Is Kendall around?" Dani asked, causing the boys to quickly shake their heads.
"He's not here!" Carlos snapped.
"We don't know where he is." James said.
"No, sorry, we haven't seen him." Logan replied, causing the girl to let out a sigh.
"Okay, well, will you tell Kendall when you see him that I stopped by and would love to talk to him?" Dani said, glancing over to the locker she knew the boy was in before looking back at the others with a small smile. "Please."
"You got it."
"Of course."
"Sure."
"Um, I guess I'll see you guys later then." Dani said, letting out a breath before sending one last smile before she turned and made her way out of the apartment.
"Dani."
The girl slowly turned around to face the Mitchell boy.
"Is everything okay?" Logan asked, looking at the girl concerned. "I mean with you and Kendall?"
"Yeah, things are great." Dani said before letting out a sigh. "I mean, we were on our way to our first date when we ran into someone in the lobby, and Kendall ran away."
"Let me guess. Jared from 4F." Logan stated, nodding his head, causing the girl to raise her eyebrow. "I get off vibes from that guy."
"No, Jo."
"Wait, Jo's back?" Logan asked, causing the girl to nod.
"Yeah, and she saw me and Kendall kissing in the elevator." Dani sighed.
"You didn't tell her you guys were together!" Logan exclaimed, causing the girl to send him a sheepish smile. "I thought you guys talked on video calls all the time with Camille."
"We do! I mean, we did." Dani groaned, placing her hand over her face before quickly dropping it. "It's just that every time I went to tell her she had to go film or something and it just didn't seem like the right time."
"Well, what are you going to do?" Logan asked. "I mean, she's literally back at the Palm Woods, so it's not like you can avoid her."
"Yeah, I know... I'll figure something out." Dani sighed, sending the boy a small smile. "I'll see you later, Logan."
The Mitchell boy sent the girl a small wave before she turned around and disappeared down the hallway, causing Logan to quickly race back to the apartment, slamming the door behind him. "Jo's back?!"
"Yeah, I got problems." Kendall's voice rang from the locker.
...
Dani's front door swung open as Charlie and Lucy came marching into her apartment.
"We got your message, so we came as fast as we could." Charlie spoke, pushing the door closed as the duo approached the girl. "I have a cup of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. She's All That on DVD..."
"And what are you doing?" Lucy asked.
Dani was looking up at the Roberts boy and Stone girl as she was hanging upside down off the edge of her couch.
"Just hanging around." Dani replied, causing the boy to hold out the ice cream in front of the girl, making her sit up before she took it. "Thanks, you're the best."
"Oh, don't thank me; that was all, Camille." Charlie stated, taking a seat beside the girl as Lucy sat on her other side.
"Let me guess, she's with Jo?" Dani questioned, causing the boy to send her a sad smile. "It's fine; they're best friends, and Jo just got back from being away for a long time. I mean, the Palm Woods is her home too."
Dani smiled at the pair lightly before she looked down at the cup of ice cream in her hand, feeling the tears welling up in her eyes as she began trying to sniffle them back.
"Hey, hey. What's wrong?" Lucy asked, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder.
"Literally, everything." Dani admitted, stabbing the spoon back into the ice cream. "Jo's back. On one hand, it's such a great thing. How couldn't I be excited? She's one of my best friends. But on the other hand, I can't help but think Kendall wants to get back together with her. I mean, you guys weren't here when Jo left; he was so heartbroken... and I would hate to get my heart broken too."
"I'll be back." Lucy spoke, pushing herself off the couch, causing Dani's focus to snap to her.
"Wait, what are you going to do?" Dani questioned, causing Lucy not to respond as she gave the Jenning's girl a look. "Lucy."
"I'm going to go find and talk to Kendall myself." Lucy said. "Because I don't like seeing you like this. He needs to see that this is really hurting you."
Lucy turned and made her way out of the apartment, leaving Dani with Charlie.
"Maybe I should just take a break and go away for a while." Dani sighed, hanging back over the edge of the couch. "I haven't seen my family in some time; maybe I could go home."
"But it would be just for a visit, right?" Charlie asked.
"Yeah, something like that." Dani mumbled.
Dani somehow managed to slip away from Charlie and found herself across the hall, back at the door of the boy's crib.
The girl let out a shaky breath before she lifted her hand and knocked firmly on the door.
About eight seconds later, the door finally flew open to reveal Logan and Camille.
"Sorry, haven't seen him."
"Figured." Dani muttered, nodding her head. "Look, as much as I cherish my relationship with Kendall, I'll understand if he wants to get back with Jo. I mean, I remember how heartbroken he was when she left, and no one forgets their first love. But I don't want to be around to see it. I can't be around for that. So if I don't hear from him by tonight, I'm going to save myself the heartbreak and leave."
"You're leaving the Palm Woods!"
"No... I'm going to leave California." Dani announced, causing Logan and Camille to quickly share a look. "I'm going to go home."
Without another word, Dani sent the couple a sad smile before she turned and quickly left the apartment and headed back across the hallway to her own.
"Hey, where'd you go?" Charlie asked.
"I just told Logan and Camille I was leaving the Palm Woods." Dani announced, causing the boy to drop the remote as he glanced over at the girl.
...
The trio was enjoying the movie when Charlie and Lucy dragged the Jennings girl from the comfort of her apartment and down to the pool.
"This better be good." Dani snapped. "We were just about to get to the best part of the movie."
"Dani, we just want to help get your mind off what's his face." Lucy spoke.
"And what better way than to see the rare albino coconut?" Charlie stated, "Cami told me it looks so cool; just look."
Dani groaned, glancing up as the duo forced her to look up at the tree. "I don't see anything."
"You have to look really hard."
Dani slightly turned her head to the window of the boy's apartment when she noticed familiar eyes watching her.
"Wait, is that Kendall?" Dani questioned, pointing up at the boy, causing him to quickly disappear—not before she noticed the thing on his head making everything click. "Are you guys really helping him love science me, right now!"
"Wha, we would never." Charlie said in a high-pitched voice, causing Lucy to hit his arm. "I'm sorry, Camille made me do it."
"Dani." A voice called from behind the girl, causing everything to feel like it stopped in time, causing her to slowly turn around as she came face-to-face with Jo and Camille.
"Jo." Dani breathed out.
"I think we should talk."
...
The two girls awkwardly sat across from each other in silence as they made their way up to Dani's apartment.
Dani watched as Jo's eye's scanned across her apartment, stopping on significant things like pictures of her and the boys where she and Kendall are close or pictures of just her and Kendall, the tiara she won from Prom; Dani was one to display memories.
"So, how long have you guys been together?" Jo broke the silence, glancing over at the girl.
"Um, well, we've been dating for about three months now." Dani responded.
"And you've been talking for how long?"
"Six months." Dani confessed, making Jo slowly nod as she let out a scoff.
"Six months. You've been talking to my ex-boyfriend for six months and didn't think to tell me!"
"Look, Jo, I tried. I really tried to tell you, but every time I built up the courage, you had to go. Whether it was filming, photo shoots, or red carpets-"
"Are you really trying to say it's my fault that you didn't tell me?" Jo scoffed.
"No, gosh..." Dani groaned, covering her face, before letting her arms drop as she let out a deep breath. "I don't know what you're expecting me to say. What, I'm sorry? Well, I'm sorry, but I can't do that."
"He was my boyfriend, Dani!" Jo exclaimed. "My boyfriend!"
"But I was in love with him!" Dani confessed, causing the room to go quiet. "You wanna know why I never wanted to go out on dates with guys until Charlie came to the Palm Woods? It was because I liked Kendall, and I had since before you moved in. Then you came along, and you guys got so close, and he seemed so happy with you... Jo, you are one of my best friends; you have to believe me when I say I didn't want to hurt you. That's why I pushed my feelings down and stepped back."
"I used to always have to tell myself there wasn't anything going on between you and Kendall." Jo admitted, causing Dani to raise her eyebrow. "Especially after the whole incident when Jordin Sparks was here, and I thought you and him were having a picnic by the pool. From that day on, I just watched your interactions, and I know that makes me seem like such a jealous person, but I realized you and Kendall's friendship was... different. Anyone with eyes could see there was something going on, with the glances and the smiles. I guess I was just so into getting my career off the ground at the time that I was oblivious."
"No, it wasn't like that at all." Dani said, standing up from her spot as she quickly made her way over to the Taylor girl, taking a seat beside her as she took her hand. "Jo, Kendall was literally so into you, and you guys were great together. I mean, he was such a mess after you left. And I'm honestly nervous he still is."
"I don't think so." Jo sighed, shaking her head as she glanced over at the Jenning's girl. "I've seen the way Kendall's face lights up when you're around; his whole mood lifts when you enter the room. He looks at you as if you're his entire world and not once did he ever look at me like that. Besides, all we ever did was argue at the end. I don't think that's good for any relationship."
The room went silent again as the girl looked down before Dani looked back over at the Taylor girl.
"So, what are we going to do?"
"I guess we wait until one of us hears from Kendall." Jo suggested, causing Dani to nod. "I just don't want to have to leave the Palm Woods again."
"And neither of us should have to!" Dani stated. "Jo, we were best friends before this mess; I think we could at least be civil enough to live in the same building."
"You don't think it would be weird if we both lived in the Palm Woods?" Jo asked, raising her eyebrow.
"I think it would be even weirder if one of us wasn't here." Dani said, sending the girl a small smile.
"Okay." Jo breathed out. "I'll stay... no matter what happens."
"Good." Dani smiled. "Is it weird if I hugged you right now?"
"Come here." Jo chuckled lightly, wrapping her arms around the girl's neck as Dani wrapped her arms around Jo's waist. "I really missed you."
"I missed you too." Dani breathed out.
...
Dani found herself alone for the first time and sat in her living room with her guitar on her lap as she softly strummed the chords.
Felt my life about to change
Close my eyes and had a dream
About a lonely place
Where flowers only bloom in gray
All the magic turned to dust
Only memories left of us
That soon will fade away
With words I never got to say
Almost lost the one thing I got right
Could've been the worst day of my life
Could've been the worst day of my life, I
Thought that I would have to say goodbye
Could've been the worst day of my life, of my life
Just when I felt you slippin' out my hands
I guess that Heaven had another plan
Oh, oh
Could've been the worst day of my life
Dani looked over at the framed picture of her and Kendall that sat on her side table, causing her to let out a sigh as she glanced away as she closed her eyes.
I'll never see that tree the same
The one that we both carved our names
Into with razor blades
Then made out in the summer rain
Oh, I almost lost you like that
Oh, don't wanna think about that
Oh don't wanna think about that
The thought that you never comin' back
The girl halted at the sound of a knock coming from the door as she glanced over her shoulder toward the door.
Dani carefully placed the guitar down before pushing herself up from her spot on the couch as she made her way to the door, slowly opening it.
"Hey."
"Hi." Dani smiled softly.
"I'm sorry for leaving so suddenly earlier and avoiding you all day." Kendall started. "It's just been such a weird day and-"
"Kendall, it's okay; Jo's back." Dani smiled lightly, shrugging her shoulders. "And I'll totally understand if you want to get back together with her.'
"But I don't want to get back together with Jo; I want to be with you." Kendall confessed, those words made Dani's heart skip a beat. "There was a reason I asked you to be my girlfriend; it just took me some time to realize what it was. I love you, Dani."
Those three words made the girl's heart beat increase as she watched the boy carefully.
"It's always been you. Ever since the first day I arrived in this town, you have always been here for me. You've been my biggest supporter for everything, no matter how stupid things may have been." Kendall spoke, causing the girl to lightly chuckle, making the boy smile. "You're the only girl for me, but I was too stupid to realize it until recently."
"I Know You Know." Dani spoke, causing the boy to knit his eyebrows, confused.
"What -."
"Stuck, Music Sounds Better, All Over Again, No Idea." Dani listed, letting out a light chuckle. "Thin Air, Crush."
"I don't understand." Kendall said, shaking his head. "Those are all songs you've written for the band and yourself."
Yeah, but they're also all songs I wrote... about you." Dani confessed, causing the boy's eyes to go soft. "I honestly thought Paris was the biggest sign I could have given you."
The couple both chuckled lightly as neither of their smiles faded away.
"I love you, too, Kendork."
Kendall gently cupped the girl's face with his hand as he gazed down into her brown eyes before he leaned in, placing his lips on hers.
Dani melted into the familiar feeling as she leaned in closer, deepening the kiss.
