big time bonus
It was a peaceful day at the Palm Woods, and the five friends decided to head down for a nice game in the park.
Dani sat out, choosing to sit on a bench far enough away to avoid any major injuries from the boy's shenanigans but close enough to see everything unfold.
"I still don't know how to play cricket." Carlos admitted as he held the bat in his hands.
"None of us do." Logan declared.
"But all the other sports equipment was signed out." James added.
"Okay, so next goal point run thing... wins." Kendall declared.
Kendall threw the ball, causing the Garcia boy to hit it before all four boys took off running, causing destruction and chaos.
Kendall fell over a cooler.
Logan backed into a woman, causing her to fall into a bush.
Carlos ran through someone's picnic. Correction, he ran through multiple picnics.
And James hit someone in the head with the cricket ball.
"Tackle him before he scores at cricket!" Logan exclaimed, pointing at Carlos, causing the other three to quickly get back to their feet as they raced after the boy.
Dani closed her book just in time to watch the four boys go tumbling to the ground on top of each other, causing her to shake her head.
"Garcia scores!" Carlos shouted in victory. "It's cricket mania, and the crowd goes wild."
As the four boys turn around, they are faced with an angry group of people.
"Oh."
"Whoa."
"Um..." Kendall stuttered out as a guy fell from a tree. "How would the crowd like a refreshing snack courtesy of Big Time Rush?"
"Eh?"
The crowd began to nod, causing the boys to quickly turn and face the vendor as Dani got up from her seat.
"Gummy buggies for everyone, good sir." James ordered.
"That'll be..." the vendor counted, placing a box on the edge. "Eighty dollars."
"Oh, okay." Logan muttered, causing the boys to pull out their wallets.
James, Kendall, and Logan's wallets were empty.
"Don't worry, guys. I got the cash." Carlos whispered, handing it over.
"Yeah, this money's from a board game. And it's not even enough."
"Do you accept real estate?" Carlos asked, going to grab something in his pocket, but Dani pushed his hand down.
"Don't worry, honey's. I got you." Dani said, pulling out her wallet from her purse to grab a hundred-dollar bill before passing it to the vendor before she grabbed the box. "Keep the change."
"That's very generous of you; thank you, ma'am." The vendor grinned before pushing his cart away.
"You are a lifesaver." Logan sighed.
"Oh, no, this isn't going to save you from them. They know you didn't buy them anything." Dani said, causing the boys to quickly turn around.
"Okay, new plan." Kendall declared. "How about a refreshing apology?"
"Sorry."
The girl standing in the front threw the broken chair she was holding off to the side, causing the boy's jaws to drop.
"I'll take that as a no." Carlos muttered, causing the boys to shake their heads.
"You might want to start running now." Dani said, glancing over at the boys. "Looks like they might want your heads."
Before the boys had a chance to respond, the group went charging forward, causing the boys to let out a scream as they turned around and took off running right past Dani.
"Hey, guys, you left your..." Dani started holding up a bag of gummy buggies, but the group was too far away to hear, causing her to shrug. "Oh well. More for me."
...
Dani found herself sitting in the corner of Gustavo's office with her songbook in hand, the cardboard box at her side, and her dog at her feet.
"We want money!" The boys exclaimed bargain into the office.
Gustavo and Kelly focused their attention on the blonde girl in the corner.
"I'm content with my life." Dani admitted, causing them to nod before they turned back to the boys.
"Forget it!" Gustavo exclaimed.
"What? Why not?" Carlos cried.
"We earned it." Kendall declared.
"From our sold-out concerts and our record sales." Logan said.
"And what about that foreign commercial we did last month?" James questioned.
"Well, you can't have your money because Griffin puts it all in an account that you can't access until you're 21." Kelly explained, heading out of the office with Gustavo right behind her, causing the teens to follow right after.
"21?"
"That's..."
"This way, it's safe and secure. And you dogs can't waste it on stupid things." Gustavo stated.
"We wouldn't do that." James said.
"Of course you would. You're... you." Dani spoke, shrugging her shoulders.
"And you're all young." Griffin said, entering from the studio. "And stupid."
"Whoa. That is not true." Carlos argued.
"Your hand is stuck in a vase." Griffin pointed out, causing the Garcia boy to lift his right hand to reveal it was in fact stuck in a red vase.
"Yeah, well, that's Carlos, but the rest of us are very responsible." Logan said.
"You all have your hands stuck in a vase, genius." Dani snorted.
"Tell you what." Griffin started. "I'll give you all a $5,000 bonus. If you can prove to me that you haven't wasted by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, we'll talk about access to the rest of your money."
Griffin tossed all five teens five thousand dollars, causing Dani to look at the man confused.
"I'm not interested. I'm good and set until my 21st birthday." Dani said, tossing the money to the man only for him to toss it back.
"It's either all or none." Griffin spoke, causing the boy's head to quickly turn to the girl, making her groan.
"Fine, whatever."
"Challenge accepted." Kendall and Logan said.
"Now if you'll excuse us, we have a very busy afternoon of being responsible with our monies." James declared.
...
"You bought a snake?" Kendall asked as the five teens stood in the middle of their apartment.
A loud shriek caused Dani's head to turn just in time to see Mama Knight retreat back towards her bedroom.
"It was only a thousand dollars." James said. "Besides, it's an investment... in love."
"Please, don't tell us more." Logan begged, sharing a look with Kendall as Carlos stared at his money intensely.
"Well, I think he's beautiful." Dani spoke, causing Kendall and Logan's eyes to grow as they watched the girl approach James and his yellow friend before petting the large snake.
"Thank you, Dani. At least one of my best friends is supportive of my rational decisions." James exclaimed. "There's a lyric in one of Lucy's songs about how she loves snakes. Now, if you don't mind, my yellow wing man and I need to get ready."
"Bye Gordon." Dani called before turning her attention to the others, who already had their eyes on her. "What? I like snakes."
"Cleary." Kendall said, wrapping his arm around the girl as he took the spot beside her.
"Okay, well, I'm going to be responsible and deposit my bonus in the bank. Who's with me?" Logan declared, glancing around at his three friends. "You guys, huh? Gettin' my bank on."
Bank time. Deposito."
"I think I'm good." Dani said, shaking her head. "I put it up in my apartment until tomorrow so I can give it back to Griffin when I see him. Out of sight, out of mind. Besides, I don't need the extra cash."
"Fair point. Kendall?"
"It's too easy." The boy declared. "This bonus is some type of trap. And we need to beat Griffin at what his bonus trap is."
"Okay, nut job; FDI see you later."
Logan walked backwards out of the apartment before he disappeared, causing the couple to turn their attention to the Garcia boy.
"How long until you think he snaps?" Dani asked, glancing up at her boyfriend.
"Hmm, any second no-."
"I know what I'm going to do with my bonus!" Carlos exclaimed, causing Dani and Kendall to jump.
Dani and Kendall found themselves standing on either side of the Garcia boy as he held interviews for a personal assistant.
"A personal assistant." Kendall stated. "Why don't you just throw your money out the window?"
"Hey, what's wrong with being a personal assistant?" Dani asked, crossing her arms. "If you've forgotten, I was once a personal assistant for the producer of your band."
"A-and you were amazing... a-and I love you." Kendall stuttered out, causing the girl to shake her head as he placed a quick kiss on her forehead.
"Once I have an assistant, he can do that for me." Carlos responded to Kendall's question, causing Dani to chuckle. "Now, what are your qualifications?"
"I have a degree from the Wharton School of Business, speak seven languages, and have worked for some of the most powerful people in this town." The guy dressed nicely spoke, causing Dani to nod, impressed.
"This is going to be a tough decision." Carlos shook his head, causing Dani to look at the boy confused. "You both are so qualified."
"I got a lot of shrimp in my pants!" The fishman yelled, causing Dani's jaw to drop as she shared a look with Kendall.
Carlos glanced back at the couple as if it were a hard choice.
"Him!" Kendall and Dani exclaimed, pointing at the obvious choice, causing the man to smile.
...
Dani had been sitting beside her boyfriend as she watched him stare at his bonus money that he had tucked away in a towel.
"You know it's not going to bite, right?" Dani jokes, causing the boy to slowly turn his head toward her, his facial expression not changing before turning back to the towel. "Wow. Tough crowd."
"Hey, I heard Griffin gave you guys a fat bonus." Katie spoke, approaching the couple.
"Shh!" Kendall snapped. "It's a trap."
"Did you put it in a towel?" Katie asked, pointing at the gray object sitting in the center of their table.
"Yes, yes, he did." Dani replied, nodding her head.
"I didn't know what to do with it!" Kendall said. "We have until 5:00 tomorrow to prove that we are responsible with our money, because he thinks we're going to do something stupid with it."
"Because putting it in a towel definitely doesn't fall under that category."
"Dani!"
"It's easy." Katie spoke. "He just wants you to do what he would do with it—invest it and make even more money. I recommend commodities."
"Commodities, of course." Kendall said.
"You have no idea what that is, do you?" Dani asked, causing the boy to shake his head.
"No, no clue." Kendall admitted, causing Dani to chuckle. "What are commodities?"
"Just name a food you like, Kendork." Dani said.
"Oranges."
"Okay, let's go make you some green with oranges." Katie declared.
James came stumbling out of the lobby with the Python wrapped around, gasping for air.
"Hey guys." James called barely above a whisper before stumbling away.
"You don't think he was hurt, do you?" Dani questioned, looking back at the Knight siblings.
"Nah, I'm sure James' fine." Kendall answered.
"James? I wasn't talking about James; I was talking about Gordon. He's only an animal, you know." Dani said, watching the Diamond boy as Kendall shared a look with his sister.
...
"Okay, just buy five thousand dollars worth of Sun Squeezed stock." Katie said, pushing herself off the table the Jennings girl was sitting, going to help her brother, but was quickly stopped.
"I can do it." Kendall declared, causing the girl to halt. "You don't have to tell me everything."
"Fine." Katie said, slowly leaning back against the table. "Once you select buy, you'll hear a happy beep, then your transaction is complete."
"That seems simple enough." Dani stated.
"Okay." Kendall breathed out. "And with one click of a button, I am responsible with my monies."
The boy hit the enter bar on the keyboard, confirming his payment, but there was no beep.
"Where's the beep?" Katie questioned. "After you buy stock, there's a happy beep."
"I don't know. I went to the Sun Squeezed website and bought five thousand dollars worth of oranges." Kendall explained, causing Dani and Katie's eyes to grow wide.
"No!" Katie exclaimed as the duo quickly rushed over to the boy. "You were supposed to go to the financial website and buy five thousand dollars worth of Sun Squeezed stock!"
"Is that bad?" Kendall asked, pointing at the computer screen.
An hour had passed, and the trio was now standing outside of the Palm Woods as they watched as a giant Sun Squeezed truck pulled up.
"Is that the beep you were referring to?" Kendall questioned, glancing over at his sister.
"No!"
The driver of the truck began lifting all the doors of the truck, revealing crates and crates of oranges.
"I guess it isn't that simple." Dani said, glancing over at the duo with a small smile, causing Katie to place her hand on her forehead.
...
Dani found herself sitting at the table in apartment 2J the following morning with Kendall and a lot of oranges.
"Mom! What's for breakfast?" Kendall asked as the woman approached them.
"Orange slices, orange wedges, and a bowl of oranges." Mama Knight answered, placing the bowl in front of the boy before pouring milk into it.
"Katie!" Kendall cried.
"Okay, I have Sun Squeezed Oranges on the line." Katie said, taking a seat across from the couple. "I explained to them that you were trying to buy stock, not oranges, and asked if they'll give you a refund."
"Well, what are they saying?" Dani asked, causing Katie to pull the phone away from her ear and place it on speaker.
The sound of laughter rang through the phone, making the boy drop his head in defeat before Katie hung up her phone.
"Look, kid..." The delivery driver spoke, standing up from beside Katie. "Thank you for allowing me to stay on your couch last night and for signing this orange for my daughter. But I got to unload that truck and get down to San Diego."
"Or you could take a tip from Logan; stay a little longer." The Mitchell boy appeared from the bedroom, handing the man some cash.
"San Diego can wait."
"Mmm-hmm." Logan hummed as he made his way out the door.
"Please tell me that everybody else is being responsible with their money!" Kendall exclaimed.
"Everyone else, as in... Carlos and James?" Dani questioned.
Carlos' assistant made his way into the apartment with dry cleaning, sending the group a smile before grabbing a newspaper and juicebox as he headed for the swirly slide.
With one good tap on the side with the paper, the Garcia boy came sliding down in his PJ's, grabbing the juicebox.
"We have a 9:00 a.m. shower followed by cartoon watching from 9:30 to 11:00, girl watching from 11:00 to 11:30, then your noon recording session with Gustavo." The man pulled out his phone as the group watched him in disbelief, causing him to glance up. "Busy boy."
"Oh, great." Kendall muttered, turning around in his seat.
"We were doomed from the start." Dani stated, turning around, causing Kendall to give her a look. "What? You know we were. Now our only other hope to prove that we're responsible with our money is James... And he's dressed in Aladdin's clothes."
Dani trailed off as she watched the Diamond boy approach the table dressed up.
"Haha, very funny." James sarcastically said.
"Please tell me you didn't buy a magic carpet." Kendall begged.
"Do I look like an idiot!" James exclaimed.
"Do you want an honest answer?" Dani asked, causing James to send her a fake smile.
"The animal control guy wants $2,500 to take apart the Palm Woods vent system to find his snake," Mama Knight explained.
"But this snake-charming outfit and flute was only 500 bucks; now who's irresponsible with money?" James cheered before turning and exiting the apartment.
"Still you." Dani muttered.
...
The Jennings girl decided to take a break from helping make orange juice to go feed her dog.
"Roger! You ready to eat, boy?" Dani called as she stepped into her apartment; the sound of something tearing caught her attention. "Roger."
Dani made her way into her bedroom to find her door, lying on her floor chewing on what was the rest of her bonus.
"Roger, no!" Dani exclaimed, causing the dog to drop what was let in his mouth.
The Jennings girl let out a sigh as she picked up what was left of the stack of $5,000.
"Roger, what have you done?"
The dog let out a whimper as he gave the girl puppy eyes she couldn't resist.
"Hey! Don't look at me like that! You're in serious trouble, mister. You don't eat mommy's monies." Dani said, causing the dog to lay its head down, causing the girl to sigh.
The Jennings girl took about twenty minutes to clean up the dog's mess and feed him his actual food before she was called away by her boyfriend.
"Hey, any luck with the oranges?" Dani asked, taking a seat beside the boy, causing him to shake his head sadly in response.
"Well, I have, uh, no snake, no girl, and no money." James complained as he approached the duo. "Tell me that you have something to cheer me up."
Kendall smiled at the boy, and instead of teeth there was an orange, causing James to sigh.
"Let's just hope Logan has some money left."
The trio turned their heads as the Mitchell boy approached them from the pool, stepping onto the couch before squeezing in beside the Jennings girl.
"Well?" Dani exclaimed, causing the boy to groan as he pulled a dollar bill out of his pocket.
"Are you serious?" Kendall snapped, spitting out the orange as James took a seat on the table beside Logan.
"Ooh, why the sad faces, bonus buddies?" Carlos asked, walking over to them with his assistant.
"Well, in 45 minutes, we get to tell Griffin that James is snake-rupt, Logan has a dollar left, and I have a truckload of oranges!" Kendall exclaimed.
"Problems are no problem when you've got a super assistant who can do anything." Carlos assured. "Assistant."
"Actually, I do know a way you can make a ton of money with a truckload of oranges."
"How?" The teens asked, leaning forward.
"It's simple. All you have to do is--." The man started, pausing when his phone began to chime. "And Carlos is officially out of money, which means I no longer work for him."
The man took a seat in a chair, grabbing a magazine from the side table before he began flipping through it.
"Wait. What? How can I be out of money?" Carlos questioned, pulling money from his pocket.
"Well, you pay me $100 an hour; add in additional grooming fees, hazard pay, overtime, and the 12 lobsters for the lobster chariot you made me buid and never used; your $5,000 is officially spent." The man explained, snatching the money from the boy's hands, causing Carlos to gasp.
Carlos sadly took a seat on the table beside Kendall, sulking.
"Let me get this straight: we were given $25,000, and after one day, we have $1 left." Logan stated.
"Actually we have $5,001." Kendall said, turning to his girlfriend. "Dani, you said you put yours in your apartment."
"Yeah, about that." Dani trailed off, pulling what was left of the $5,000 that had bite marks and tears in it out of her purse. "Do you think he'd believe me if I said my dog ate it?"
The four boys groaned at the sight of the mauled money.
"What do we do?" James asked.
"We do what Griffin would do." Kendall said, grabbing the dollar from Logan. "We invest it."
The five teens stood in front of the vending machine, watching as the bag of Gummie Buggies dropped.
Logan reached down, pulling it out of the machine before stepping back to his friends.
"To failure!" The five teens cheered.
The Mitchell boy began tugging on the bag, causing the candy to fly everywhere on the floor.
"Oh, perfect."
"Smooth move."
"Unbelievable!"
"Fitting."
"Not my best move."
"My snake!" James cried happily, reaching down as the yellow python slithered out of the vent at their feet. "Gordon Bartholomew Slitherton, you had me worried sick. I will never let go of you again."
"Hey, I'll take that snake off of your hands for 100 bucks." Animal control is offered.
"Sold."
"Oh, and I'll take that because..." Carlos took the money from the man's hand before racing off with the others right on his heels before halting in front of his assistant. "I can hire my super assistant for one more hour."
"Now, how do we make a ton o' money with the oranges?" Logan asked, causing the man to stand up.
"We sell them to one of my old bosses. He thinks bathing in freshly squeezed orange juice once a day keeps the goblins away."
"Okay. Well, how much money do you think we can get for them?" Kendall questioned.
...
"$25,000." Griffin grinned as the five teens held up the stacks of cash. "I'm proud of you fellas. You didn't waste $1 of your bonuses, and you proved me wrong. Which is weird because I'm never wrong... It's really weird."
"Well, I guess that means that the 'R' in BTR stands for..." Kendall started.
"Responsible." The four boys spoke together.
"And since you proved you can be responsible with your money..." Gustavo spoke.
"You get full access to your accounts." Kelly announced.
"No, we're good."
"We're cool with it."
"Thank you so much, though."
"Forget all about that."
"Maybe next year."
The five teens continued speaking over one another before they turned around and raced down the hallway.
"Well, I must be going too. I just scored a sweet deal on a truckload of oranges." Griffin announced, causing the group to halt as they shared a knowing look. "Got to keep those goblins away."
