3.09; gold

BTR went gold.

Their album sold over 500,000 copies and earned them a gold record with their own unveiling ceremony.

Emily gave the guys an encouraging nod, motioning for them to continue smiling while the press snapped multiple photos.

"On behalf of RCM/CBY Globalnet/Sanyoid, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Big Time Rush's Elevate has sold over 500,000 copies and to present them with their first U.S. gold record," Griffin smiled, standing besides Gustavo and the band.

He swiped the cloth off, revealing the shiny record in the frame.

"So we all get gold records?" James beamed, continuing to smile.

"It's a tough economy fellas, so we only made one," Griffin said through his smile.

"What?"

Gustavo continued to smile, "But you can come visit it here in the studio any time you like."

"No," Carlos dragged out, tugging the frame closer to him. "You can come to the crib and see it any time you like."

"I actually already have a space for it on the wall."

Tugging it back, over Gustavo's shoulder, "Yeah, well I need it near me," James said.

Nervously, "Okay, maybe we should talk about this later," Logan mumbled.

"When there's no cameras around," Kendall suggested, the press letting their cameras fall, confused by their impending argument.

The boys lets go, stepping back, Emily and Kelly each giving them a warning look.

"Okay, it's later!" Carlos cried, fighting Gustavo over the record again. Kelly jumped, running around to pull the frame off of Carlos as commotion broke out all over, cameras flashing, people screaming.

Leaving Emily to hide her face, leaving the room until they broke it off.

After the ceremony, the boys frustratedly stormed out of the studio, bothered by their lack of gold records to take home.

Emily stayed back to work. Work meaning working on arts and crafts, taking a break every now and then to text Jo.

It was her birthday.

Kendall had a birthday lunch played in a reserved cabana by the pool, and Jo was hoping to have dinner with Emily and her friends that night.

Emily pulled up her messages with Kendall, seeing he was texting her.

Can I have my paycheck early?

Emily told him no. He could pick it up tomorrow.

But I forgot Jo's birthday!

Gaping, Emily picked the phone up to her ear, hearing it ring.

"I know..."

"How can you forget your own girlfriends birthday?" Emily exclaimed in disbelief.

"I know!"

Another voice answered in the background, "I'll put the other half on my debit card and you can pay me back tomorrow."

"Aw, thank you, buddy," Kendall sighed.

"No. Thank Super Friend!

"Did he just call himself Super Friend?" Emily asked.

"Yes, I think it's a new thing he's trying out."

"Friendship away!" Logan shouted.

Kendall groaned, "Thanks, Em. Please don't do that in the store!

She giggled to herself, hearing Kendall's pleas with Logan as he hung up.

Time later, she'd received another frantic text. This time from Logan.

I forgot Camille and I's 15-month anniversary!

She laughed, typing back, "You and Kendall are just the worst today.

Just then, a text came in from Camille. It was a photo of her wearing a gold necklace, saying Logan gave it to her for their anniversary.

She sat back in thought. Why would Logan give Camille a gold necklace if he forgot the anniversary. Then she realized, it had to be the gift meant for Jo...

A clanking noise took her attention off the old record she was carefully gluing a BTR label to, and the boyfriend drama back at the Palm Woods. The girl turned around, looking through the window into the booth. The shadows of Carlos and James stood there, holding the gold record.

Emily warily got up, going around through the recording booth to confront them. "What are you doing?" She asked, in sync with Gustavo who just entered with Kelly, seeing Carlos holding up a hammer.

"Nothing," the two boys quickly said.

Looking back and forth between the record and hammer, Emily urged Carlos to come clean.

"We're going to play our gold record and hear us in gold."

"What?" Gustavo cried, snatching the record back from James.

"Guys, it doesn't sound like anything," Kelly told them, annoyed, but not unsurprised like Emily.

"Do you know that for sure?" James asked. "Have you ever played a gold record?"

"Hmm." Emily thought, attention turning to her. "I haven't thought about that." Carlos smiled, holding the hammer out to Emily to smash the frame.

She reached out to take it, Gustavo pushing her hand away, stealing the hammer for himself to keep the gold record safe.

"You will never play this record. Now get out of my studio!" Gustavo yelled, chasing the two boys out of the booth and down the hall with the hammer.

Kelly and Emily winced, running out behind them to see the guys run around the corner towards the exit.

"Well, they won't try that again," Gustavo said, walking back to his office with Kelly. Emily stood dumbfounded, knowing they would definitely try again.

On cue, James and Carlos peeked around the corner, yelping and turning back to hide when they saw Emily was still standing there.

The girl rolled her eyes, seeing the office door shut. "Guys, come out," she told them. "I want to hear the record, too," she admitted.

The boys popped out, excitedly gawking at her in surprise. "You'll help us steal the gold record?" Carlos questioned.

She nodded, pointing to hide behind the couches, "Yes, and it's almost snack-time, so get ready to go," she whispered, jumping over the back of the couch besides the wall to Gustavo's office, the boys hopping over after her.

Finally, the door opened, Gustavo dancing out, "Elevate a little higher," he sang. "Gonna get me some snacks from the pantry."

The three popped up as he walked out. Emily went to cross into the studio, stumbling back from the obstacles of James and Carlos "cart-wheeling" into the studio.

"What is happening?" She wondered out loud, the guys tripping over themselves the whole way inside. They stopped in front of the gold record wall.

"We gotta work on our cart-wheels," James breathed out.

"That was a cart-wheel?" Emily sassed.

"But first–" Carlos said, snapping off his helmet strap. "We must get that framed beauty to the crib, smash it, and then listen to BTR in pure gold."

"Gold," James echoed.

As soon as James and Carlos tore the frame from the wall, a red light started flashing with an alarm screaming "Bad dog alert!"

"I didn't do it!" Emily cried, stepping back from the two boys holding the gold record.

Kelly and Gustavo slid in, turning off the alarm, unsurprised.

"I told you they wouldn't leave it alone. Didn't I tell you they wouldn't leave it alone!" Gustavo exclaimed.

"Many, many, times," Kelly sighed.

Emily nervously cleared her throat, "Thank god you guys got here in time," she said, stepping over to stand on their side, ignoring the looks of betrayal from James and Carlos. "I didn't think I could stop them."

"We know you snuck them in here," Kelly told her, Gustavo glaring.

Emily, caught, pursed her lips, looking down, sliding back over to the guilty side.

"Our golden voices must be heard!" James cried. Gustavo frowned, taking the frame from their hands.

"This doesn't sound like anything!" He told them. "But now that I know that you clearly cannot be trusted," he said, pointing to his assistant who sheepishly shrugged, "I'm going to hang this in my office so I can keep my eyes on it at all times," he said, giving them the 'I'm watching you' gesture as he stalked off.

"Don't you guys ever get tired of schemes and hijinks?" Kelly exasperatedly asked.

"Yes."

"Sometimes."

"But not today," Carlos told her.

Emily flinched, covering her head as the two boys hollered, going to cart-wheel off. She jumped, seeing James collide with the wall, leaving scuff marks from his shoes.

Emily, James, and Carlos moved to hide in the recording booth, crouched on the floor under the window.

"Logan gave the Jo's present to Camille," Emily nodded, confirming her thoughts as Kendall angrily ranted to her.

"Why can't he explain and take it back?" Carlos asked.

"Because she'll know he lied and forgot their 15-month anniversary."

"Why can't Kendall explain to Jo what happened?" James questioned.

"Because then she'll know he forgot her birthday," Emily hummed, amused by their problem.

Hearing footsteps, they froze, slumping down.

"I think she sees us," Carlos whispered.

"Quick! Play dead," James said, him and Carlos falling over.

"She's knows we aren't dead," Emily shook her head.

"I know you aren't dead," Kelly said over coms. "You guys are gold obsessed!" They stood up, facing Kelly through the window, "If anything, it's an old record they reuse and spray paint."

Emily led the way out into the main booth, "So you wouldn't have a problem joining us on our gold-record test?" She wondered.

"If it will get them out of the studio, what's the test?"

"If one of those gold records plays the song on its plaque, we know our gold record will play our song," James explained, pointing to the remaining records on the wall.

"In gold," Carlos said.

"Fine," Kelly snapped. "We will smash and play one of Gustavo's old records because I have to say, I'm getting a little curious myself!"

"Yes," the three cheered.

"What?

Emily gasped, seeing Gustavo pop up from the other side of the window, his voice muffled. "Maybe he didn't us," she whispered.

Gustavo suddenly ran off, tearing every gold record off the wall, collecting them in his arms. The group piled out down into the main studio by time he had them all, the walls bare.

"Stay away from my gold!" He shouted, backing up and running into his office with all his records.

"I've got to hear that record," Kelly seethed.

Looking to Kelly in surprise, Emily laughed, pulling out her phone, receiving a call.

"Hey," She answered.

"What do you know about a gold necklace?" Camille asked.

"Is Jo there?" Emily asked, turning to talk in private.

"Hey," Jo said.

Emily chuckled, "Look, Kendall forgot your birthday and Logan helped him with the necklace last minute. But then Logan forgot your anniversary and let Camille have the necklace and that's the last I heard," she explained.

She paused, looking down as her phone buzzed, receiving a frantic text from Logan.

We broke the necklace!

"Scratch that," Emily told them. "They broke the necklace. I'm sure they're in the crib," she told her friends.

"Then let's have a birthday/anniversary dinner tonight with them," Jo suggested. "And you and James could join for your...?"

Emily stiffed a laugh, "We'll be there. Happy Birthday! See you guys later."

"Bye, Em!

"Thanks!

She hung up, turning back to the group, facing James, "We're having dinner with Kendall and Jo, and Camille and Logan for their birthday/anniversary dinner."

James nodded, "We can tell them all about hearing BTR in gold," he gushed. The two high-fived, turning to Carlos and Kelly, devising a plan.

***

Plan after plan failed.

Emily vanished from the team every now and then to return to her arts and crafts in secret. After successfully sticking the BTR label over the record, she put a covering over it, and spray painted the black gold, just like everyone predicted it would be.

Finally, Emily decided barging in was the best way to handle it. She knew Gustavo was too prideful to admit it, but he was curious too.

As soon as they stepped in, "Stay away from my gold!" Gustavo warned, waving the hammer at them over his gold piled desk.

"We're not going to smash your Big Time Rush gold record," James assured him.

"You are," Carlos said.

"I am not," the producer rolled his eyes. "It's probably just an old spray painted record!"

"The label says BTR," Emily pointed out.

"You know you have been thinking about it all day, because I know I have," Kelly told him.

"I have not!" He denied.

"You have written smash hit after smash hit, now it's time to smash that frame and listen to your music in gold," James said.

"Not on vinyl, not on MP3, but in–" Carlos said.

"Gold," the four of them hushed.

"I won't do it!" He shouted.

"Then look us in the eye and say you are not dying to know what that record sounds like!" Emily snapped.

He jumped up, "I do! I do wanna hear it!" He cried. The man turned, throwing the hammer through the frame, shattering it. He tore the record out, holding it in the air. "Ah!" He screamed.

"I'm so excited!" Emily cheered, running after Gustavo into the booth.

"Big Time Rush in gold!" Carlos sang.

"Stand back..." Gustavo said, stepping back from placing the record in place. "And get ready to listen to Big Time Rush like you've never heard it before."

"You've heard all about the raggy melodies," an older voice sang out, obviously from an older record.

Emily frowned, gaping in despair. "I'm sad."

"So, it is just an old record spray painted gold," James hummed.

"That is disappointing," Carlos frowned.

"I will kill all of you!" Gustavo screamed, holding up the hammer.

Emily jumped, turning to sprint out with the guys, swiping her bag that held her homemade gold record, "It wasn't my idea!" She cried, turning out the hallway.

"You better run!"

***

"We're late for dinner!" Emily cried.

Gustavo hadn't stopped crashing them. They made it all the way back to the Palm Woods and it was dark. Sprinting out through the pool, they spotted the group of four sitting at a white table clothed table with two empty chairs.

"Hey, nice bracelets," James gushed, pausing to stare at the gold on Camille and Jo's wrists as he ran past.

"Sorry, be there in a minute!" Emily told them, hopping over the chair, still hearing Gustavo yelling. "Carlos, you okay with leading Gustavo off?"

"I got this!" He cried from behind her, slapping his helmet.

James jumped over the shelf in the lobby, through the plants, as Emily dove behind the couches. They ducked down hearing Gustavo shout at Carlos, fading away at they clopped up the stairs.

Emily gasped for breath, standing up, patting her hair down. "We look like a mess," she gasped.

James exhaled loudly, "I know," he grumbled, walking out with her to the pool.

The table was staring at them in confusion. Startled by the commotion they all caused.

Emily beamed, running over to hug Jo in her chair, "Happy Birthday," she smiled, going around to take her seat by Camille. James sat across from her, slowing his breath as well.

"What was that?" Kendall snapped.

"We wanted to hear Big Time Rush's gold record," James started to explain.

"It doesn't sound like anything," Logan told them.

Emily held up a finger, "It's actually an old record spray painted gold," she pointed out. "But Gustavo wasn't happy that he smashed the frame for that," she winced. She turned to attention to her friends, "So you made bracelets instead?" She asked, admiring the gray duct tape holding them together around their wrists.

"We're Super Boyfriends," the two shrugged, boastfully.

James slapped Logan's arm, "Dude, you can't do that when i don't have a bracelet for my girlfriend," he mumbled.

Jo and Camille amusedly watched. "But you aren't celebrating anything," Camille reminded him.

"Actually..." Emily said, drawing attention to herself. She leaned over, pulling her homemade spray painted record out, resembling the one in Gustavo's office. "Congrats on your first gold record of many," she smiled, handing it to James.

She knew the moment they stormed out after the ceremony, James would be mopping all day about not getting to keep his own record. Ever since the ceremony was announced, all he could talk about was his collection that hadn't begun yet.

Ironically, real gold records are made the same way she made hers.

James's eyes widened, shocked at the gesture, taking the record. "It's an old record I spray painted," she laughed. "Now you can start that collection."

James set it down, getting up from his seat. He walked two steps to Emily, leaning over to kiss her as she perked her head up from the chair. "You're so amazing, thank you," he told her, pulling back.

Emily nodded at him, a blushed smile. Camille and Jo exchanged silently glances, now bonding over their friend's relationship now that Jo was back, and witnessing them being cute for this first time.

Logan and Kendall however–

"Hey," Kendall scoffed.

Emily and James broke their eye contact, turning to the guys, "Why don't we get records?" Logan asked in offense.

"We're also Big Time Rush," Kendall reminded her, the girl clicking her tongue.

"Yeah, but you're not my boyfriend."
