3.01; backstage

The best and worst part of the world tour was no other country or performance was as exciting as London.

No, the rest of tour was significantly calmer, filled with sleepless nights, travel, sightseeing, fans, and, for the new couple in the group, attempts to sneak out together.

Since saving the world, and publicly engaging in an official relationship, Emily and James obviously both seemed happier with themselves. They had no problems. Most likely due to the absence of reality in their fresh relationship. Their honeymoon phase would end with the tour.

Their time in Europe ended as well. The last concert of tour was in Toronto, Canada. For the first few shows, Emily made it a responsibility to be a the guys side for every need they could have while in between songs: water, towel, energy, pep talk, throat coat, wardrobe fix...

She also made it a habit to intently watch each show, not just feeling obligated to support her new boyfriend, but the band she works with. Hearing the same songs and watching the same routine night after night got tiring real fast and the girl gradually switched from watching the show to lazily chilling backstage while the guys were on stage. In an odd way, it was the closest she had to alone time all tour. Every other moment was spent setting up, assisting Gustavo, spending time with the guys, or trying to find a moment with James.

Her backstage breaks were perfect for checking for updates on social media feeds about Jean-Pierre, a french cricket Carlos adopted, studying Star Wars since James was a huge fan, and uploading videos and backstage pictures to Big Time Rush's page.

Ever since arriving for call time when Kendall found the Wall of Fame backstage, he made it his mission to get BTR on the wall for beating the record of fastest quick change, currently held by NSYNC.

A minute until the show started, and the guys hadn't changed yet. Kendall and James were by far the most focused on their quick change. Carlos was swinging on a rope and Logan had been flipping out all day over some science book he promised to himself he'd finished before tour was over and he just started.

"One minute and counting, boys," Emily announced, slouching in the leather chair where the guys were all stretching, reading, and swinging back and forth.

"You gonna miss watching me stretch before shows?" James smirked, stretching his arm over his head. Emily smiled, rolling her eyes at her boyfriend, not giving him the satisfaction  of being right.

"Stop flirting," Kendall told his friend. "Focus."

"Why aren't you dressed?"

The groups' focus shifted to the panicked producer, wheeling in behind his transportable cue board.

"Because we are about to break N'SYNC's 3.9 second backstage change record," Kendall proudly said.

"And then Big Time Rush joins the rock and roll legends on Canada's Wall of Fame," James hummed, admirably gazing at the painted records with the guys.

"Go!" Logan and Carlos shouted at Emily. The girl turned in her chair watching the guys hurdled themselves over the couches to the changing tent. As soon as the curtains shut, she hit the stopwatch.

Within two seconds, the tent had fallen over, collapsing on the guys. The girl amusing chuckled, staring at the ticking clock. She lifted up part of the curtain, seeing her friends sprawled over each other, tangled in loose clothes.

"You're currently at 10.3 seconds," she smugly told them.

"Emily!" Kendall snapped, tugging the curtain shut to block her out.

She laughed quietly to herself, "But seriously you also have 10 seconds till you're on stage."

"I made it!"

Carlos emerged victoriously from the pile, fully dressed in the first look. Emily held out her hand, "Helmet," she said. The boy took the black helmet off his head, turning it over to Emily.

Carlos knew he couldn't wear the helmet on stage, but he also loved stressing Gustavo out. Everything backfired for Carlos in Italy when Gustavo tossed the helmet into a random crate, misplacing the item for a good hour after the show ended. Emily is the only one Carlos trusts with his helmet now.

"Have a good show!" She called after the boy who ran off to get his mic and get in place on the giant platform that would lift them up.

Kendall and Logan jumped up, still tugging on their jackets or gloves, giving their friend a distracted smile before running off.

James was the last to get ready, distraughtly feeling his messed up hair. "My hair!" He cried.

Emily rolled her eyes. After all, he had just been wearing a hat on his head and was probably a little flat. A tight smile tugged on her face as his eyes lit up when she pulled out his lucky comb.

"You're the best," he gushed, combing through his brown hair.

Peering over his shoulder, Emily caught sight of the other guys leaving for stage and Gustavo and Kelly arguing. She lifted her head up, giving the boy a soft good luck kiss.

"Have fun," she smiled at her boyfriend who blew her back a kiss as he hurried out onto stage.

The crowd erupted into cheers as the music kicked up.

"Make it count, play it straight..."

The stopwatch started for the second change of the night when the guys ran back from finishing Blow Your Speakers Out.

The curtains quickly tore open revealing the guys fully dressed in the red and black look. Emily looked down at the time, sighing. "5.3," she said.

"Come on!" Logan snapped, throwing his hat off his head.

"Okay," Kendall said, "we still have three more wardrobe changes left. N'SYNC's record is going down tonight."

Emily turned to see Gustavo approaching by the sound of the squeaky wheels from his station, "And you're back on stage in ninety seconds!"

"Snack time!"

"Couch time!"

Unsurprised by Carlos' routined snack break, the three focused all their attention onto Logan who drowned himself in the Stephen Hawking book.

James and Kendall questioningly stared down at their friend. He looked up from the page, "I promised myself I'd finish this book by the end of tour, and tour ends in an hour."

"Who reads backstage?" James retorted.

"I do. And Stephen Hawking's journey through physics, blackholes and his days at Studio 54 are both thrilling and inspiring. Quiet!" Logan snapped, "82 pages left to go."

"You should be replenishing fluids," James advised, drinking water while Kendall jogged in place and then quickly whipped off his jacket before starting again. "And staying limber."

"He's right," Emily told Logan.

"I liked you more when you didn't agree with him all the time," Logan said, not looking up. "Shh."

James gaped, "Was that a burn, did he just burn me?"

"We should be figuring out how to change faster," Kendall corrected them all, practicing taking off the jacket.

"Well, we're not going to do that by reading."

Logan sarcastically said, "Oh, and your backstage limbering methods are genius."

"Hey, keeps the muscles and the vocal chords loose," James defended, pulling out a blue and red plastic lightsaber, holding the red on out to the girl by his side. "Shing!"

Emily backed-up, learning the hard way, James doesn't mess around when playing with the lightsabers. She held it out, colliding it with the blue stick as James muttered sound effects, jumping on the table and couch, "Waow!" The boy frowned at his girlfriend who lamely swung the lightsaber with one arm, not jumping around with him, "Em, you're not trying!"

The girl sighed, jumping onto the table, swinging the lightsaber, towards the boy, who grinned jumping backwards before she could strike his head.

"Why do you do this again?" Kendall asked, watching his friends battle, despite Emily's constant disdain for the game before they dated.

"Lightsaber fights are apart of any healthy relationship," She replied, briefly looking over her shoulder at Kendall. "At least that's what James said after he killed me for the second time."

"Third time!" The boy cried, hitting the girl's side with the toy. She looked up, gaping in anger.

"Are you kidding me!" She snapped, throwing her lightsaber down onto Logan who groaned as it interfered with his reading. "I was answering a question!"

"This is war," James reminded her, hiding his amusement at how frustrated she got when he killed her.

"It's plastic!" Emily cried, taking James' lightsaber by the blue piece, waving it around.

"We're back!

James laughed, giving her a small kiss on the head as the girl shoved her boyfriend off her towards the stage as Gustavo shouted for the guys to hurry up.

Emily moved back to the changing tent with her stopwatch, waiting for Love Me, Love Me to end. The song came to a close with the deafening cheers of the crowd, the guys dripping in sweat as they ran back, chugging down water while tearing through the curtains to change into the street look.

The girl almost hit the stop button, until she realized the guys weren't even kind of in the right costume. They emerged wearing robes and cloths covering their entire bodies with sunglasses. "I said street look, not sheik look," Gustavo corrected.

The guys hurried back in, quickly emerging, each in a different colored onesie. "Yeah, that's the Fresh Beat look," Gustavo sighed. Emily narrowed her eyes in confusion as the guys ran back for the third try, not even looking at the time anymore.

They came out for the third time, wearing the first look. "Yeah, that's the first look, but wear it again before you kill yourselves."

Emily turned the stopwatch, "12.6," she hummed, the guys cursing. "How is that even possible?" She mumbled under her breath, still taken back by the chaos she was just forced to witness.

"Okay," James smiled, pulling out four lightsabers, "we need to work on getting limber-er."

"I get two!" Emily cried, stealing the two red lightsabers from James before Kendall could claim one after Logan and Carlos ran off. She turned the two against each other, clicking the handles together to make one extra long lightsaber with red on either side.

"Then I get Kendall!" James snapped, handing the second blue saber to his buddy. Emily, without warning, slammed the lightsaber into Kendall's torso, the boy gasping in betrayal.

"Kendall's dead," Emily shrugged, going for James who jumped back over the couch, climbing onto the coffee table while the girl swung for his legs. He jumped, landing on the couch besides a very furious Logan, falling over the back.

"Would you stop!" Logan snapped, kicking James over the couch. James got to his feet, throwing one of the pillows at his girlfriend who stumbled, crashing onto the couch, her shoes kicking Logan's book. "I'm trying to read here!"

Emily, ignoring Logan, jumped over the couch, chasing after her boyfriend, who turned, swinging his double sided lightsaber at her.

"Break over!

The couple sighed, both immediately forfeiting the battle, tossing their lightsabers to the ground, shaking hands. "To be continued," Emily gasped, breathing heavily as James regained his breath control, running off to the stage.

Time Of Our Lives quickly ended, the guys back in a moment, Gustavo emphasizing the street look command.

The guys ran out as soon as they ran in, "3.8," Emily cheerfully told them, eyeing the mistake of the round. The guys weren't wearing pants.

"You forgot your pants," Gustavo hummed.

"I thought I felt a draft," Kendall sighed.

"Gotta go!" Carlos screamed the guys running back and out, this time fully clothed.

"Gotta go," Logan and Carlos snapped, each running off again.

"Perhaps to be legends we should break a different record," Kendall sighed, looking to James and Emily hopefully.

They shrugged, following Kendall over to the wall, looking for a record to break.

"Okay, um," James thought. "Oh, Highest Stage Dive, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 25 feet!"

"Stage is only 20 feet," Emily reminded them.

"Oh, Snoop Dogg!" Kendall noticed, "Largest Beard of Bees."

Emily grimaced, "Carlos is allergic, and that's dumb," she pointed out.

"Okay, we can beat N'SYNC's record!"

"Yes," James agreed, him and Kendall turning to Logan behind them on the couch, "but not by reading word pages!"

"Books, babe," Emily corrected.

"And they hold the answers to everything," Logan remarked.

"Oh, do they hold the answers to this?" James threatened, holding out his lightsaber, "Waow."

"Don't," Kendall warned, smiling at Logan who was lost in his world of physics, "we need him." Kendall pushed the lightsaber down as he led James away before he killed Logan and left the battling to Emily and him.

"Let's go!

Emily quickly pulled the red lightsaber out of her back pocket, extending it and swiping it into James' side when he went off towards stage. The boy gasped, turning to his girlfriend in shock. "I win," she smiled, closing the lightsaber.

"You got lucky," James defended against her.

She shrugged, knowingly, "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck."

Kendall gaped, turning to James anticipating his reaction seeing the girl burn him by quoting Star Wars.

"I'm so proud of you," James sighed, holding out his hand. Emily smugly smiled, shaking his hand for a battle well fought.

***

There was one quick change left and the guys had just wrapped City Is Ours, meaning they would flood backstage in a panic any moment.

Gustavo confiscated the lightsabers. James and Emily were pretty disappointed, but she was also relieved. Now that she'd won a round, James would definitely turn his game up a notch and Emily wanted to hold on to her one victory a while longer.

"Elevate look!" Gustavo screamed.

Kendall stopped suddenly, turning to his friends, "Wait! This is our last chance to beat N'SYNC's record and we still haven't figured out the secret of quick changing," Kendall reminded them.

"Right," James nodded, drying his face, "lets all stay here and think of ways we can increase our clothes changing speed."

"See ya!"

"Gotta go!"

Emily nodded, unsurprised as Logan and Carlos ditched the other two. "I hate them!" James snapped to his friends. Kendall sighed in defeat.

"Drink some water, calm down," Emily advised, "And as soon as Logan finishes that stupid book, he'll be back."

"But Big Time Rush will never be allowed to perform again in France."

Emily raised her eyes in question, turning at the sound of a French accent. "What?" She mumbled, joining the conversation with a panicked Gustavo, French inspector, Carlos and Katie.

"What is going on here?" Gustavo snapped.

"Carlos smuggled a cricket out of France and we just got busted," Katie groaned.

Emily's eyes fell as she noticed Jena-Pierre in the hands of the french inspector.

"Not Jean-Pierre," she cried, looking at Carlos in sympathy. James exchanged a confused look with Kendall, turning to his girlfriend.

"You knew?" He questioned.

She looked back, shrugging, "I set up the fan account for him."

"Well, at least let him say goodbye," Katie pleaded.

The man grudgingly held out the terrarium, Carlos sadly petting the glass. "Bye bye, little buddy," he mumbled. "You almost made it to L.A. But we'll always have Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, and now Canada."

Emily stepped back into James, reaching behind her to grab his arm. The boy rolled his eyes at the girl, still wrapping his arm around her as she sadly watched Carlos part with a cricket, sticking a Canada sticker on the case.

"No other cricket has seen so much. I'm so sorry that I'll never see you again," Carlos sadly stepped away, Kendall comfortingly rubbing his shoulders.

"You know we French don't understand many things," the inspector said, "space travel, bikini tops, soap- but there's one thing we do understand: love." He looked down, back to his men behind him who looked away. The man slowly held Jean-Pierre out to Carlos. "Be good to him."

"Yes!" Carlos cheered, "My cricket is staying."

Emily beamed excitedly, until she was roughly shoved, Logan tearing through in despair. "My book is gone!" She exasperatedly sighed, leaning back into James. "I only had one page left to go, one page. Why? Why? Why?" He cried, slamming his fists into the chest of one of the large  crew members. The man sighed, pulling out the book for Logan. He gasped, taking it, "My book, I can finish." Emily stiffed a laugh, hearing James groan in annoyance behind her. "Quiet, reading!"

"Okay, why do they get happy endings but we don't?" James groaned, looking to Kendall in frustration.

"Because we still haven't figured out how to beat N'SYNC's quick change time," Kendall snapped, accusingly glaring at Carlos who was preoccupied talking to his cricket.

"...how to slow down time by creating a rip in the fabric of time. Done!" Logan cheered, finishing the book.

"Wait," James realizing, Emily turning back to him, "Slowing down time? Ripping... fabric," he realized, knowing nodding to his friends who caught on.

"We're back!" Gustavo cried.

The guys and Emily nodded to each other, sprinting off towards the changing tent. Emily ran towards the table where the couches were, grabbing the stopwatch, stumbling to the ground, looking up in anticipation to hit the start button as the guys ran into the curtains.

She glanced back and forth between the tent and the time, getting to her feet, and nervously waiting with the massive crowd for the guys to emerge. As soon as she saw the curtain peal open, the silver glare of the outfits shining through, Emily hit the stop button. She took a deep breath before looking down.

The girl gasped, jumping up and down, "3.7 seconds!" She screamed.

"We're on the Wall of Fame," the guys cheered, Emily running forward, James engulfing her in a celebratory hug as she high-fived Kendall.

"Now get out there," Gustavo said, James setting Emily down, "hit that trampoline, and let's elevate!"

Emily sighed in content, watching the eager boys run out to end the tour. She slung her tour sweatshirt over her body, snuggling into the warmth as she picked up the remains of her things, ready to leave as soon as the guys wrapped up. She peaked out the curtains, holding up her camera to get side pictures of the guys performing.

"The trampoline's going to break!" Emily jumped, turning to see Kelly barreling through, dressed like she was 16. She gasped, realizing Kelly had been missing the entire show. Kelly stole the camera from Emily, setting it down, "Let's go," she snapped, yanking Emily out onto the back of stage behind the massive set.

"What do you mean?" Emily shouted, following Kelly under the set, right below the trampoline.

"I got a fax saying there was faulty welding!"

Emily's eyes widened, laying on her back, "The guys use this at the end of the song," she reminded her.

"Kelly pushed the metal together, seeing where it had started to break, instructing Emily to hold it up, hearing the song end.

A strong force pushed back against Emily's muscles, the girl realizing she'd have to put more strength into holding the trampoline up as Kendall jumped, "Kendall!" Kelly cried.

"Logan!" Kelly snapped, another shake racking from above. "James!" Another. "Carlos."

As soon as the pressure of Carlos jumping left, Emily dropped her arms, sighing heavily as she looked to a relief and stressed Kelly.

The girl breathed heavily, brushing her hair out of her face, hearing the crowd roar as the guys said goodbye. Kelly laughed, turning to Emily.

"What a way to end tour, huh?"
