2.19; single

Jo had only been gone for a few days.

Kendall and Emily weren't exactly ready to be happy yet. Especially not Kendall.

Emily had yet to confront James and tell him it wasn't going to happen between them. That was hanging over her head.

To make matters worse, Griffin showed up and demanded a hit summer single in a day and spun Gustavo into a daze.

Emily slumped over onto the panel in the booth with everyone as they curiously watched Gustavo in the studio at his piano.

The man sat up straight, froze solid with the exception of his right arm, which shot out straight, pointing one finger down and repeatedly hit the same key over and over and over much like a drinking bird.

"I've never seen him like this before," Kelly stated from beside Emily who leaned over in interest at her boss' out of character state. "It's too much pressure."

"I don't understand." The group jumped at Griffin's sudden entrance, spinning to see him and his assistant, Abdul, standing behind them. "All I asked was Gustavo write a huge, mega, summertime hit single that captures everyone's hearts, sells one billion copies, rules the world, and has the word "beach" in it!" Emily rolled her chair forward, the only one not standing in front of the CEO. At the blank stares, Griffin shrugged, "What? I gave him till the end of the day to do it."

Emily sighed, leaning back in her rolling chair, "Ah, Griffin, you truly are a marvel," she hummed sarcastically. Griffin smiled.

"I know," he beamed. "Now, what's wrong with this one?" Griffin pointed down to a dead Kendall, face down on the couch at the back of the booth, moaning in pain.

"His girlfriend moved to New Zealand," Carlos winced.

"Literally flew out of his life," Logan expressed.

"And he's face down on the couch," James pointed out drawing an eye roll from Emily.

"Well, fix it," Griffin said, "because I can't have this bummer singing my huge hit single of the summer. And I need my huge hit single of the summer that rules the world or else," he threatened, pointing to Abdul who held up a black brief case not disclosing its containments.

Kelly and the three guys winced as Gustavo remained broken, Kendall cried, and Emily made no motion to offer a solution or witty comment.

The bored girl groaned, "So what?" She asked, the only one unafraid of whatever was in the case. Kelly gasped as the guys tried to shush her and hope she could take it back.

"So what?" Griffin repeated. "Do you know how I got to be so rich and powerful?"

Logan nodded, supplying an answer, "Your grandpa invented the moist towelette and you inherited his fortune."

"That, and I solve problems," Griffin said, sitting on Kendall who took up the entire couch. "Now, you four go and get Kendall over his heartbreak," he pointed at the teens. "And you," to Kelly, "get Gustavo to write the single that rules the world."

Emily sluggishly exited the booth, her hair out of place while she waited for the guys to walk out with Kendall. As they ran up to her, following the girl with dead Kendall, she inhaled.

"So, yeah, I'm not gonna help with this project," she told the guys.

"What?" Logan demanded.

"Why not?" James asked.

"My best friend just moved away, and I can't help Kendall until I'm okay," she told them. "So, go do whatever "bro" things you guys do together and don't come find me unless it's an emergency."

Carlos gasped, "Wait," the group stopped, looking at him, "I'm not your best friend?"

James and Logan rolled their eyes while Emily rolled her neck in exhaustion, "You can be my new best friend?" She offered. Carlos smiled in agreement. "Great, first best friend task, give me some space," she told Carlos.

Carlos saluted her and she abandoned the mission, turning to his friends.

"Guys, give her some space."

***

Half an hour.

It took half an hour for them to give up and call for help.

Emily was forced to take off her cozy socks, put her pint of ice cream away, and put a bra on because they couldn't handle Kendall.

Logan sent an urgent text.

Help. Help. Help. Hockey, the pool, pink smoothies, and skateboarding didn't work.

Any of circumstance, Emily would've ignored it. But Carlos, her new best friend, also texted her.

We need your help!

Best friends come first.

She yawned stepping into the crib, seeing it empty with the exceptional of Kendall on the couch.

"Hey, dude," she greeted, entering, "where is everyone?"

"They left," Kendall answered, his voice muffled in the cushions.

Emily bit her lip, nodding to herself. "Then why was I called down here? I have pints of ice cream with my name on them upstairs waiting," she sighed, falling into the couch by Kendall.

"Probably because I snapped at them."

The girl looked down in interest as the boy rolled over to face the ceiling and actually speak to Emily. "Oh, yeah?"

He nodded, slightly guilty, "I told them they didn't understand. That they wouldn't know what I was feeling until they all had girlfriend's and lost them in an instant."

"Then what?"

Kendall shrugged, "I don't know. They all just left."

Emily narrowed her gaze, "They left right after you said that?"

He nodded, "Yeah."

Emily sat back realizing they all went to get girlfriends and then break up right after. The idea of James being broken up with made her feel slightly bett-

Emily sighed in realization, leaving the couch and heading towards the door.

"Where are you going?" Kendall whined.

She turned her head back, "I gotta go do something," she answered, heading out the door to break it off with James.

Emily walked out of the elevator into the lobby, immediately faced with the boy's back.

"James," she called. He turned around, slightly out of sorts. "This isn't working out," she said, leaving no room for him to respond. "We're not a good fit together and I think it's best that we forget anything ever happened between us and keep it that way."

James stared blankly at her, "You're breaking up with me?" He confirmed.

It wasn't technically a break up, so she shrugged, "Basically."

Then Carlos came zooming in from the pool, sobbing hysterically and clinging to James like a lifeline. "It's okay, buddy," Carlos cried. "I know what you're going through." The James started crying hysterically with Carlos.

Emily's eyes widened as the two boys broke down in front of her. "James?" She tried, not wanting to make him cry.

"What is it you two are going through?" Logan asked, spotting them.

"The red-shirted girl," Carlos weeped. Emily cautiously walked around them to Logan, the only person not making her uncomfortable. "It was the greatest 12 minutes of my life. And now she's gone. She's gone, I tell you!" Emily and Logan both flinched at his outburst, looking at each other at a loss for words.

"Pain, it hurts so real," James wheezed out. Emily shook her head helplessly at him, not sure what she could do in front of the guys.

"Hey, guys," Emily looked ahead to see Kendall walking and not crying, "I'm sorry for snapping at you earlier-"

A hand flew over Emily's mouth as the two boys wailed loudly, ducking into Kendall's shoulders for comfort, starling the boy.

"Do you see what you started?" Logan snapped at Kendall who shrugged, not sure what he did.

Emily shushed Logan, "Get them out of the lobby," Emily told the two. Logan took Carlos off of Kendall and they each led a distraught friend into the elevator.

Their sobs echoed inside, bouncing off the walls. The doors opened to the second floor, everyone piling out. Emily followed behind mumbling to herself how she just wanted her ice cream.

Kendall and Logan each dropped their friends on the couch as they fell face first into the cushions like Kendall was before.

"What happened?" Kendall asked.

"You told us we couldn't understand what you were going through, so we all went out with girls and their's clearly ended worse than mine," Logan observed. "And if we don't get them to sing on the summer single Griffin's gonna "or else" us!"

Emily rolled her eyes to Logan, "You're not actually worried about that, are you?" She questioned, skeptically.

"Now, my perfect record is gone," James sobbed. "Why couldn't you let us in?" He snapped at Kendall.

Emily pursed her lips, looking to the two standing boys for help, "I'm sorry, record?"

Kendall nodded, "James has never been dumped. It's a perfect record."

"Was!" The boy cried.

Emily deadpanned, "That's why he's crying?" She retorted, not feeling guilty anymore because apparently he wasn't sad their thing was over, but his record was broken.

"Dude, wait," Logan paused, "why are you face down on the couch anymore?"

"Well, you guys told me to get my mind off Jo," Kendall explained, "and you guys did help me get my mind off Jo. But now I've said Jo three times, and I'm starting to feel-" Kendall sniffled, wavering as he lost his balance. Logan stepped around Emily, gripping Kendall.

"No, no, no," Logan muttered. "Think about them, not Jo."

"How do we fix this?" Emily asked at the escalated problem on their hands.

"By remembering what you guys told me," Kendall said, "We're single now! And we can do all the cool stuff we used to do before we were in relationship," Kendall reminded them. "And we can get through it together."

Emily smacked her lips, briefing offended, "So, I take it this is a bros thing?" She confirmed. Logan and Kendall both hesitated, giving her apologetic shrugs. She shook her head, waving them off as she gladly left the crib.

"No, no, don't be sorry," she assured them. "I have a date with my freezer."

"She's gone forever," Logan sang.

Gustavo demanded Emily and the guys get to the studio ASAP because he finished the song. They all sat in the booth, watching the guys record, including Griffin.

"But I'll never forget her face," Carlos cried. Emily winced, looking to Kelly with a helpless look.

"She said it was over," James wailed.

"And she moved so far away," Kendall sang before bursting out into sobs when he heard the words.

Then the three guys all wailed hysterically, unable to sing, much less speak anymore while they all clung onto Logan.

"Okay, Gustavo, seriously?" Logan shouted.

"Not your best idea," Emily hummed looking back into the booth seeing James and Carlos drop to the ground as Kendall started sliding. Fear erupted in her eyes at the thought of her and Logan taking all three of them on solo. Emily leapt out of her chair, barging into the booth. "No, no, Kendall, stop it."

Logan held him up, as Emily pushed him off of the walls, "Stay with us, buddy!"

"I don't like it, Gustavo," Griffin told the producer, everyone having their eyes on him. "And I said I wanted my hit summer song today, or else."

"Griffin, I just need more time," Gustavo begged.

"So, now I'm giving all your money to market the summer single to our summer snack food division," he said as Abdul opened the case to reveal boxes of snacks. "So, they can launch their just invented Yo-Blow."

Emily slightly choked down a laugh with joy knowing she was right. She leaned over to Logan who's face was stone, knowing she was going to say something. "Ooh, scary," she mocked.

"-The yogurt you can blow bubbles with," Griffin explained.

Emily sarcastically raised her hand to speak, "Uh, yeah, that's basically melted gum."

Kelly waved Emily off, "Griffin, we can get you that summer single, we just need more time," she pleaded.

"They've never let you down and you know that," Katie pointed out to Griffin who had been with Gustavo all day trying to break his writers block. She even got a new leather jacket.

"Katie, I like your jacket," Griffin told the young girl. "So you get one more day to give me a summer single with the word "beach" in it that rules the world, or you all get Yo-Blow." Abdul and Griffin made their exit.

Gustavo whipped around in his chair, "You three get those two off the ground and get them to stop blubbering so they can sing," Gustavo ordered.

"Got it," Logan chimed as he hauled James up and Kendall dragged Carlos away.

***

Emily found two wheel barrels outside the Palm Woods for Logan and Kendall to wheel them around in. They pushed the two sobbing boys into the lobby.

"Okay, you know what we have to do," Kendall stated.

"Right," Logan nodded. Then he took out two puppets: a cow and a kangaroo. Emily gasped, shaking the kangaroo's hand.

"Who are you?" She beamed as Logan smiled at the appreciation.

"No!" Kendall shouted, making the two jumped back from the puppets. "Take Carlos so he can find the red-shirted girl so he can see her one last time."

"Just one more time!" Carlos cried.

"On it," Logan nodded, wheeling Carlos off.

Kendall turned to Emily to break down their half of the plan until Emily stopped him. "Give me a minute," she asked. "I think I can fix him. Just give us a moment," she said. Kendall nodded, unsure, but wheeled James over in the nook of the lobby, leaving the two of them there.

Emily sighed, alone with James while he continued to cry.

"James, as ridiculous as I think you're being," she criticized, "think of it this way: we weren't in a real relationship, right?" He sniffled. "So it wasn't a legit break-up if there was nothing to break-up from. Therefore, you technically weren't dumped," she explained.

James nodded, sniffling as he sat up. "You're right," he realized. Emily smiled to herself that one of them finally stopped crying. Until James burst out bawling again.

"What now?" She snapped.

"But Jennifer dumped me!" He cried.

Confused, "What?" She muttered as awareness dawned over her, "James, did you ask Jennifer out so you could know what Kendall was feeling?"

"Yeah," he nervously sobbed.

Emily nodded to herself, clenching her jaw. She stood up, "Kendall!" She shouted. Kendall popped up from the chair, running over. "Fix him," she told Kendall.

Kendall nodded, wheeling James off. Emily let a deep breath go, fuming at James Diamond for letting her sit around all day thinking she's the reason he was so upset.

"Em!"

She turned seeing Logan and a functioning Carlos run up to her. She frowned in confusion, pointing to Carlos.

"We know how to find the red-shirted girl," Logan told her.

"She ordered chili cheese fries!" Carlos beamed.

Logan shook him off, explaining, "We just have to see what apartment that new company deliver to today."

Emily nodded, "I'm in," she agreed.

Logan furrowed his brows, "You're not fixing James?"

"Not anymore."

***

The three of them climbed 4 flights of stairs, reaching the top level to go to the last apartment listed.

"This has to be her," Emily gasped, leaning over to catch her breath.

"That's it!" Carlos shouted, running ahead of the other two, eagerly knocking on the door to 4R. Emily rubbed Carlos' shoulders as he bounced in anticipation.

The door opened to reveal a massive, bald man, with a dark beard, covered in cheese.

"Please tell me that's not her," Logan mumbled in fear to Carlos, who viciously shook his head.

Silently, the guy slammed the door in their faces. Carlos flinched before breaking down again. "I'll never see her again!" He fell against the wall, sliding down.

"This makes no sense," Logan sighed. "We checked every apartment that got a delivery. Wait-"

"I'm smart," Logan and Emily chimed together. They turned to each other. "She's the delivery person," they both explained, taken back when the other said what they said.

Giving each other unsure looks, together they looked down to Carlos as Logan pulled out his phone.

"Carlos!" Emily cheered, "You want some chili cheese fries?"

Sobbing, "What kind of question is that?"

Logan and Emily had dragged Carlos to the elevator and down the hall to the crib.

Carlos immediately crawled up onto the kitchen table and cried there.

Emily and Logan could only wait for the fries to arrive while Carlos sobbed in the main room. The two had go back to the bedrooms to silence the noise as much as possible.

"Are you okay?" Logan asked.

She turned, caught off guard, "What?"

Logan shrugged, uneasy, "It's just ever since you snapped at Prom, we haven't seen you and when we do, you seem off."

Emily gave a soft smile, thinking to herself how distancing from the other guys wasn't her best call. "I was dealing with some things, then Jo left, but I figured it out, and I feel better," she nodded, a soft smile to Logan.

Logan shook his head, sitting on the bed beside her, "Well, what was going on?" He asked, wanting to help.

Unsure how to gently let Logan down, his phone beeped, a text coming through saying the order had arrived. Logan clicked his tongue, "Saved by the bell..." he mocked as they left the room.

Walking out, Carlos' moans got louder with Kelly's voice commenting, "No happy Carlos."

"But only for a second!" Logan exclaimed and him and Emily walked out to see everyone back and James well again. "Because we ordered him chili cheese fries."

Emily and Logan fist bumped while waiting by the door.

"How are chili cheese fries supposed to get that in a singing mood?" Gustavo questioned, incredulously.

Emily smirked hearing the bell ring, holding up a silent finger for him to hold the question.

Logan opened the door, revealing a delivery girl in a red shirt. "Chili Cheese Factory!" She beamed. "Someone order chili cheese fries?" She asked as Logan stepped back for her to come in.

Carlos snapped his head up, gasping before flying in front of the girl a goofy smile.

"He did," Emily smiled.

The girl smiled, "Hey, it's my old boyfriend," she joked.

"Uh, huh," Carlos stuttered out, gazing at her in wonderment.

"Okay, Carlos and me are back!" James exclaimed, "And now that Kendall has Jo out of his head-" Everyone paused, seeing Kendall was missing. "I said "Jo" didn't I?" James winced.

Hearing groans, Emily looked over to see Kendall back on the couch again. Everyone cringed seeing Kendall upset again. Except Emily, who nodded to herself and crossed over to Kendall, her hands folded in front of her.

"You know, before Jo left, she told me I had to be your New Jo," she told him, "And I was totally not into that idea, but I know what she meant." Emily stopped in front of him. Then she raised her hand and slapped him upside the head, "Get up."

Everyone flinched, stepping back.

"Oh!" Kendall cried. "What are you doing?" He rubbed his hand to the spot she hit.

"Would Jo let you sit here all day feeling sorry for yourself?" She retorted.

Kendall sighed, sitting up, "No." the boy admitted, "But she wouldn't slap me either."

"I'm New Jo," Emily reminded him, smirking, "not OG Jo." She shrugged playfully, lightly kicking his foot, "Plus, if you're gonna be my new best friend, I'm not gonna let you cry all day either."

Kendall smiled at the girl.

"And there's one thing that snaps everyone out of heartbreak!" Gustavo chimed in. "A summer single that rules the world and has the word "beach" in it."

Kendall shook his head, "A summer single is not going to help me, Gustavo."

"My summer single will."

Carlos jumped up and down, upset, "Wait, hold on!" He screamed. Everyone turned to the panicked kid. He aggressively pointed to Emily accusingly, "You said I was your new best friend!"

Emily sighed, giving Carlos a sympathetic glance, "My best friend has to watch scary movies with me." Carlos' eyes went wide.

"He can be your new best friend."

***

"If I ruled the world," Kendall sang, beaming from the studio.

Emily drummed her hands on the table in excitement, turning to Griffin, "Now, that is a song that will rule the world!" He exclaimed, making Emily and Gustavo high five in victory. "And, frankly, it makes me wanna kick off my shoes like I'm down at the beach," he said, referencing a line in the song.

Emily looked over to see the man had indeed taken off his shoes.

"And cures heartbreak," Kendall smirked.

Kelly seethed, "Not everybody's heartbreak," she mumbled turning around to Katie who sobbed face down on the couch.

"I'll never forget you, leather jacket!" She cried.

Emily stiffed an amused laugh. People started going home, heading off, mainly Griffin and Abdul with Gustavo, hopefully to praise him for a great song.

Kelly crouched down by Katie, rolling her eyes to Emily at the girl's dramatics.

The guys were talking in the studio. James and Emily locked eyes. He discreetly nodded to the side. She nodded, going out to meet him in the lobby.

Seeing Gustavo's office door was closed, she nodded at James as he came out it was safe to talk.

"Should we talk about this?" James asked, unsure how to handle it.

Emily shrugged, "We did, whatever this was is over," she told him.

James sighed, "Yeah, but really talk about it when I'm not in the middle of a crisis."

The girl ran her fingers through her hair, "James, there's really nothing else I have to say. I do not want to continue this," she told him pointing between the two of them. She cut the boy off, "Nothing changes. Our friends don't know, so there's no reason to change how we act around each other."

James sighed, feeling heart broken inside, "Are we still friends?"

Truthfully, Emily didn't see James the same way. She saw him how she did when they first met, arrogant, self-absorbed, and insensitive. "Not the way we were," Emily admitted.

He shook his head in disbelief, scoffing, "Are you even upset about this at all?" He asked, not seeing any emotion from the girl.

Emily shrugged, "I was," she told him. Her prom was ruined. She spent a weekend in isolation. She stress baked and ate. And in return, it affected her relationship with her other friends. Emily saw herself being upset in different circumstances, with a different James, the James she thought he was. But not for this guy in front of her. Jo helped her see that. She sighed, admit-tingly.

"But you're just not worth crying over."
