The Muffin Or The Hammer
"People know we're here." Jenny threatens the man as he looms over us. "No, they don't." He said and he starts to kneel down and grab Jenny. She screams and he slams her up against a pillar and begins to choke her. I get up and jump on his back and wrap my arm around his neck while Jenny tries scratching at his face.
He then tosses Jenny across a table then grabs my arms as I try tightening them against his throat. He then reaches around to grab my leg and was able to pull me off of him and tosses me off to the side, crashing into another table.
I groaned and try to get up as I see the man, now some feet away from me, go after Jenny but she grabs a face mask, puts it over her face and grabs a container of powdered drugs and flings it at the man, getting it all over his face. He yells and groans as he falls back against a wall and dies.
Jenny then takes off the mask as I slowly get up. "(Y/n)? You okay?" She calls out. "Well, besides the fact my back will hate me in the morning...I'll live." I quipped as I get to my feet and walk over to her. Once I hold a hand out to her, she takes it and I get her to her feet. At that moment, we heard a door opening and we quickly get out of the cellar.
Once we get outside, we hide basically in the shadows of the corners of the cabin. Jenny looks out then turns to me and gestures for me to follow her. We run out and head towards where we hid the jeep when the clean shaven southern accented man catches us and we stopped.
"Travis." Jenny said, breathlessly. Oh, this is the Travis she told me about. I thought. "Jenny...Jenny, you and your friend gotta go, now." Travis tells her. "Come with us." Jenny said as she walks up to him. "No. No." Travis said while I grab her arm. "Jenny." I said, worried, and she pulls her arm away from me. "No, Jenny...Jenny, listen to me. Both of you take this path to the south gate. It's gonna lead you two to the road, okay?" Travis said as she shakes her head.
"You gotta be quiet." He tells us. "Travis, please. You can still get away. This could be your only chance to get out. Come on. Please." Jenny pleads to him and Travis had a conflicting look on his face. "Jenny, we need to go..." I said, warningly, as Travis backs away from her and points his gun at us.
"I'm sorry, Jenny. You should listen to your friend." He said as Jenny gives him a stern look. "You gotta go." He said, shakily, and I could tell he didn't want to hurt us, especially Jenny. He cocks his gun and I grab her arm again. "Jenny..." I said and she glares at Travis once more before we take off back to her jeep and head off.
We make it to her house and after licking our wounds, so to speak, I look over at her. "Do you want me to stay?" I asked her. "I mean, what happened back there was a mess..." I said and Jenny nods. "Yeah, it was. I screwed up." She said, tearfully. "You only did what you thought was right." I assured her and I go to hug her just as we hear a knock at the back door.
"That's probably Cassie." Jenny said as we pull back from the hug, as we were recovering Jenny called Cassie and asked her to come over. I nod and I go over to the door and open it. "Thanks for coming." I tell Cassie as she enters. "Yeah. Are you guys okay?" Cassie asked us while I shut the door. "I'm okay but..." I said as I gesture to Jenny, who has her back to us and leaning against the countertop.
"Where's Kai?" She asked Cassie. "Um...he's still at my Aunt Cathy's." Cassie said and Jenny turns to face us, distraught written all over her face. "Jenny, what happened to you?" Cassie asked. "I screwed up, Cassie...really badly." Jenny replied.
"What?" Cassie whispered. "I-I can't be alone right now. I-I don't know what to do." Jenny stammers and Cassie goes to hug her. "We'll figure it out. Just tell me what happened." Cassie said as Jenny hugs her back.
"Here you go. Gimme the old ones." Cassie said to us, the next day, as she hands me and Jenny two freshly cold ice packs for our bruises that we sustained from last night. We hand her the old ice packs and accept the new ones.
"Thank you guys for staying the night." Jenny tells me and Cassie as the three of us sit on the couch. "Yeah. I got your back. Always will." Cassie tells her. "Same here." I tell her then I sighed. "But we need to tell Tubb everything." I added. "Ahh, I don't know if I can." Jenny mutters.
"Why?" Cassie asked. "Travis. Cassie, he's working for them." Jenny said. "But you don't know that for sure. He helped you and (y/n) get away." Cassie said and Jenny sighs and throws her hands up before places her right hand over her face. "I don't know. I...Can...Can we just... Let's just talk about something else." She said.
"Yeah. Sure. I'm going back to the office. I need to get back to work. Denise said Mark and Jerrie have been picking up the slack for me." Cassie said. I hadn't met Jerrie yet but I knew she was one of the kidnapped victims of Ronald and Rick's and she decided she wanted to help Cassie at her office. They told me she went to go visit her mother when I arrived.
"They got you covered." Jenny tells her. "Yeah. I know. I just... I need to do something. It's that work-ethic thing. Got it from my dad." Cassie said then she sighs, deeply. "You sure you're ready?" I asked her. "I won't know until I try, so we'll see, I guess." Cassie said, shrugging, and Jenny smiles.
"You two need to be careful." Cassie tells us. "Trying." Jenny said. "Careful's my middle name." I said and Cassie smiles.
"I saw the truck, and I just knew." Jenny tells Tubb once her and I get into his office and explained what we discovered. "Jenny, you and (y/n) could've been killed." Tubb said, disapproving. "We need to go back right now, pull a warrant, and raid that lab." Jenny demanded.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Warrant? Neither of you brought me no physical evidence." Tubb said. "The evidence is there. We just need to go back and seize it before they have a chance to move it." Jenny tells him and Tubb sighs. "Listen. I want these people to go down as much as you two do." Tubb said.
"Then do the right thing. Pull a warrant." Jenny exclaims. "Jenny, if I go in there with a flimsy warrant and we whiff, it could mean my job and yours." Tubb said. "A kid...Mason Ford...is dead. Others are gonna die. We need to stop them." Jenny tells him and Tubb looks at us.
"Are you two absolutely sure the evidence is there?" He asked us. "Positive, sir." I said. "I wouldn't ask otherwise." Jenny said and Tubb sighs. "All right, I'll get you your warrant. Go assemble a team." Tubb tells us and Jenny nods and points at him. "Thank you." She said and we walk out of his office.
"Nobody move!" Poppernak and Tubb shout after they kick in the doors of Ren's cabin. "Spread out! Sheriff's Department! Don't move!" Tubb shouts as they come in and Jenny and I follow them. "You heard him...Sheriff's Department!" Poppernak shouts as we go into the room and see Ren with her brother, her father, another woman and Travis.
"What the hell is going on?" Ren's brother asked and Jenny walks up to him, holding the warrant. "Hands where we can see 'em!" I shout as I aim my gun at the Bhullar's. "We have a warrant to search your property." Jenny said as she hands the paper to Ren. "Told you I'd see you soon." She tells Ren then she turns to the rest of the team.
"Sweep the house. We'll check the basement." Jenny said and the other men go upstairs. Jenny then glares over at Travis before we head to the basement.
We make our way to the basement and enter the room, only to see that it is totally empty. "Damn it." I growled as Jenny sighs. "We're too late. They cleaned it all up. They must've known we were coming." Jenny said and Ren comes down the stairs.
"Careful what you say out loud, all right? Just execute the warrant. We will talk in private." Tubb tells me and Jenny as he walks off and Ren comes up to us.
"Find what you were looking for?" She asked us, smiling. "Oh, we will. I promise you that." Jenny said. "What happened to your and your friend's face?" Ren asked us. "Our boxing workout got a little intense. You should see the other guy." Jenny said as he takes a step towards Ren, with a cocky smile, while Ren's smile falters a bit.
"Now, if you don't mind, we got a job to do." I tell her. "Sure. Searching an empty basement. It's very important work." Ren said, sarcastically, before she walks off and Jenny and I share a look.
"They knew there would be a raid, had everything cleared out before we even stepped foot on the property." Jenny said, frustrated, as she slams the locker door. We had just returned from the raid and in the locker rooms of the station and I couldn't blame Jenny as I too was annoyed.
"He tipped them off." Jenny said. "Who?" Tubb and I asked and she lets out a heavy sigh before turning to us. "Travis." She said, finally. "Jenny, you don't know that. Nothing you can do about it, anyway, so just leave Travis in the grass until we know more. Today, we take the loss. Enough heads are gonna roll for that." Tubb tells her.
"Look, speaking for the both of us, I'm sorry, sir. It was a lock. It was all there. We know what we saw." I tell him. "It's not yours or Jenny's fault. I'm the one who made the call to go in there with a wafer-thin warrant." Tubb said. "A crappy warrant won't matter if we nail them." Jenny said then we hear a knock.
"Hey, boss." Poppernak said as he enters and we look over at him. "Other boss. Sorry to interrupt." He said. "What is it?" Tubbs asked. "Yeah, we got a line on one of those Reed Colfax trucks. The ones you said you saw at the Bhullars'." Poppernak said and Jenny and I share a look before she looks back at Poppernak.
"Where is it?" She asked. "Deputy Miles pulled one over on MacDonald Pass, headed out of town." Poppernak informed and the three of us share a look and I smile at Jenny. "Let's go see what the Bhullars are hiding." I said and she nods. "Go." Tubb said and we follow Poppernak out of the locker room.
"This your rig?" I asked the driver as Jenny, Poppernak and I get out of Jenny's car and walk up to Colfax truck. "It's the one I'm driving. I wouldn't call it my pride and joy." The driver said as he stands next to Miles.
"Open it." Jenny demanded and the driver goes to the back of the truck and opens it, revealing boxes all wrapped up. "Clear." An officer tells us and Jenny and I get in the back of the truck.
"Montana shorthorn. Those are grade A cuts. That's the best you can get." The driver said, sniffling. "Miles, what did the weigh station say he's hauling? 40,000, all in." Miles said, which I found a bit suspicious. "All this beef and you're
only scaling at 40,000? Seems light." I pointed out as Jenny cuts open and box and digs inside of it.
She takes the packaged meat out of the box and tosses it while I took notice that the driver looked nervous. "Hey, c'mon, lady, that's prime product there." He said, defensively. Then Jenny digs deeper and pulls out a couple of packages of drugs. "Prime product, indeed." She said with a smile.
Later, we were in the interrogation room with the truck driver, Bryce, questioning him about the cargo he was carrying. "So, drivers don't pack their truck, they just transport." Jenny said and Bryce nods. "Right, and I'm just a driver, so anything you found has nothing to do with me." He said.
"Who's your point of contact?" I asked and he doesn't respond. Poppernak then pulls out two photos and sets them down in front of Bryce. "Either of these guys look familiar?" He asked but Bryce doesn't say anything, he doesn't even really look at the photos.
"What about this guy? Have any dealings with him?" Jenny asked as she sets a photo of Travis down in front of him. "Y'know, Deputy Pumpernickel here, he offered me some hot chocolate. Thank you, by the way. Could I have that now? With marshmallows, please and thank you." Bryce said.
"It's actually Deputy Poppernak. My grandfather's Ukrainian." Poppernak corrected him. "I'm gonna make this real easy for you. If you give us nothing, then you go down for the drugs. Might even be looking at manslaughter for the overdoses." Jenny said as Bruce fidgets a little.
"You're running drugs for a family of thugs that would poison every last person in this town if it was good for their bottom line. Think about that for a second. How does that line up with the good ol' Montana boy you pretend to be?" I asked him as he looks around, still silent.
"Whatever money they're giving you, won't do you any good behind bars." Jenny adds. "What do you want from me?" He asked us. "I need a man on the inside. Someone who knows movement, who can watch and listen. So, what do you say, Bryce? Can I count on you?" Jenny asked him and Bryce sighs as he thinks for a moment.
"Fine." He whispers and Jenny smiles as she leans towards him. "You just earned yourself some hot chocolate." She said and Bryce rolls his head, annoyed, as Jenny leaves the room.
"Wow, gosh. Having a CI sounds exciting and dangerous." Denise said as her, Cassie, Jenny and I sit in the Dewell and Hoyt office. "Yeah, are you guys sure about this?" Cassie asked us. "I know what you're thinking. That this is risky." Jenny said. "Oh, hard yes on that, but then again, I wouldn't expect anything less from you, so..." Cassie said and I snorted out a laugh.
"She's got you there, Jen." I said. "Okay, on brand. I-I'll own that. But I need evidence against the Bhullars." Jenny said. "And you're okay if Travis goes down with them?" I asked her. "That's on him. I did what I could." She said and I nod. "Copy you." Cassie said and Denise smiles.
"Can I just say I love having you both back here?" She said and Cassie laughs. "Yeah, it does feel like old times. And having an old friend here, working with us." Jenny said as she hits my shoulder. "Yeah, it has been nice to be back here." I said.
"You all wanna go grab a bite?" Cassie asked. "Aw, wish I could, but I have my stupid book club tonight, and I'm the one who chose the stupid book." Denise said. "And I'm honestly tired." I said. "And I wish I could, but I got to get back to the office. Raincheck?" Jenny said. "Yeah." Cassie said. "See you tomorrow." Jenny tells us. "Bye!" Denise said as Jenny leaves and I sighed.
"And how are you doing?" She asked me as Cassie leaves as well. "Like I said, it's been nice. Not having any reminders of..." I stop and sigh at this then Denise comes up to me and places an arm around my shoulder. "You know, if there's anything you need to get off of your chest, you can talk to me." Denise said, sympathetically, and I nod. "It's the reason Cassie keeps me around." She said, jokingly, and I laugh.
"I appreciate it, Denise." I said then I give a heavy sigh. "It's just what happened with Liam and then with James, seemed like my life was just spiraling downwards. Felt like I was drowning. But since moving here, I feel like I can finally breathe. And I'm given a second chance at life. And I can't thank Jenny, Cassie and you enough for helping me fit in." I tell her and she smiles. "Of course, sweetie. Like I said, I'm all ears if you ever want to talk." She offers and I nod. "Thank you." I said then she hugs me.
After we pull out of the hug, I give a sigh again. "Well, I'm gonna go home. Oh, and I'll bring your dish to you tomorrow. That casserole was fantastic!" I tell her and she smiles. "Goodnight!" She said and I leave and head off home.
Flashback
I was in the room on the other side of the interrogation room where Mad Dog was sitting there with Sheriff Jones asking him questions. After tipping Jones off about the Fentanyl Mad Dog had acquired, Jones raided the warehouse Mad Dog and his gang were doing their business and they arrested a few people, some of them were shot as they tried to cause a gun fight.
I wasn't there as I stayed here at the station and they wanted to bring me into his questioning. "Look, whatever you think you got on me, I had nothing to do with it." Mad Dog said, pretending to sound innocent. "Really? Well, we've got a very strong and good witness that says otherwise." Jones tells him. "Who?" Mad Dog asked and then I was ushered to go towards the door of the interrogation room.
"Why don't you come in, ma'am?" Jones calls in and I walk in the room, Mad Dog's eyes widen in shock once he sees me. "Hey, boss." I said, mockingly, as he glares at me.
Minutes later, Jones cuffs Mad Dog while he glares daggers at me. "You rat!" He growls at me. "I hope you enjoy the inside of a prison cell, Mad Dog." I snarked. "You are gonna regret for crossing me, you bitch. You hear me?! You're dead!!" He shouts as he tries to lunge at me but Jones' grip on him was stronger. "That's enough!" Jones said and he leads Mad Dog out of the room.
"Mark my words, Mouse! I will make you pay for this!!" He shouts as he is carried out of the room.
