Keys To The Kingdom

"So, it sounds like you are settling in well." Dakota said over the phone the next day and I laugh a little. I had just finished telling him everything's that's been happening here since I arrived. "Yeah, it's just what I needed to be honest." I said. "Well, I'm glad you're doing better. Lord knows, you've needed a break." He said. "I'm just sad that it's away from my favorite boys." I said as I walk into the kitchen and pour myself a cup of coffee.

"Hey, it's okay. Maybe we'll come over and visit one day." Dakota said. "That honestly would be awesome! Would love to see my favorite little nephew." I said and Dakota laughs. "Yeah, Harry won't shut up on how much he misses you." Dakota said and I could just hear him rolling his eyes at this and I laugh. "And that is why he's my favorite." I joked.

Dakota chuckles then sighs a little. "What's wrong?" I asked, noting the exasperated sigh. "Oh, it's just...well, I need to tell you this in case something happens." He said and I furrow my brow. "What is it?" I asked, cautiously. "It's James." Dakota said and I frown as my heart started to sink.

"Oh? What about him?" I asked, flatly. "Well, apparently, he's looking for you." Dakota said. "Why? I have nothing else to say to that asshole and he's said all he wants to me already." I growled. "I don't know. He caught me at work and said he noticed that you weren't at your apartment and I just told him that you moved. He asked me where and I just gave him a few choice colorful words towards him." Dakota said and I give a small smile.

"Do you think he wants to get back together?" Dakota asked me. "I sincerely doubt it. After what he did to me, there's no way in hell I would go back to him." I said and Dakota gives a small laugh. "Good. Cause I would kick your ass if you did." He said and I smile. "Wouldn't blame you." I said before I look over at the clock on the stove and let out a bit of a scoff.

"I better go, Dakota." I said. "Duty calls?" He asked. "Yeah, unfortunately." I tell him. "Ok, well call me when this whole drug cartel crap is over with." He said. "I will. Love you and tell the family I love them too." I said. "Will do. I love you, too, sis." Dakota said and I hang up before I pocket my phone and get ready for the day.

About an hour after arriving to the station, I was already feeling a bit stressed as I found out some news that I was gonna have to tell Jenny when she comes in. She finally came in, carrying a couple of coffee cups, and walks over to me.

"Because I love you. Double caramel macchiato, extra whipped cream." She tells me as she hands me the drink and I smiled, accepting it. "Thank you. Perfect. Which now makes me feel bad to have to tell you this." I said as Jenny takes a sip of her drink.

"What is it?" She asked me, her brow furrowed with worry. "Um, there's a lawyer here to see us." I said. "About what?" She asked, confused. "Said she represents the Bhullars. Big city, fancy-pants type. We saw her at their house." I tell her before I take a sip of my drink.

"My clients, the Bhullars, are being harassed by this department in an effort led by Undersheriff Hoyt, who has appeared uninvited on my clients' properties on multiple occasions." The woman, Alicia, said as we sit in Tubb's office and she hands us her card. "I'm sorry. What exactly is your relationship with Veer Bhullar again?" Jenny asked. "I'm here representing him as his legal counsel." She replied but Jenny raised an eyebrow at this.

"Is that all?" Jenny asked, in a tone making it sound like she didn't believe Alicia and I honestly didn't believe her either. "You tell me. Is there something else you'd like to discuss?" Alicia asked. "No, there isn't. Just, please continue." Tubbs said, trying to defuse the situation.

"Thank you. I was just saying that my clients are being harassed. And in the most recent occasion, it involved a raid on their ranch home." She said. "This is ridiculous. We had a warrant to search a property." I said and Tubb turns to me. "Just let her finish." He tells me and I sigh and fold my arms across my chest.

"I'm here today with a friendly request to cease and desist." Alicia said. "Veer Bhullar is running a drug cartel." Jenny stated. "The Bhullars are part of an ongoing criminal investigation." added Tubbs. "My clients have holdings in construction and real estate. They're business owners who are serious about civic responsibility and want more than anything to invest and support in this town." Alicia said.

"A kid is dead because of their drugs." I said, firmly. "I think I'm gonna have to deny your friendly request." Tubb said and she inhales, deeply. "Hmm. I thought you might say that. So let's discuss this warrant, shall we?" She asked as she digs in her bag and pulls out a piece of paper and sets it on the desk.

"This is the warrant that you executed when searching the Bhullars' ranch property. A raid that turned up nothing, I might add. How did you get that warrant?" She asked. "Judge's name is on it." Tubb said. "Yes, Judge Mattis. And I don't suppose you told him that everything in the warrant was made up." Alicia said, with a smirk.

"Made up?" Tubb asked, disbelieving. "Please. It's all confidential informant this and anonymous tip that. My guess is that you can't back up any of it. Combine that with the fact that you found literally nothing during your illegal raid, and that looks real bad. The kind of bad that can result in a civil lawsuit against this department. The kind of bad that puts your badge and your pension in jeopardy, Sheriff." She said and I felt my heart sink at this then Jenny and I share a look as I noticed Tubb looked nervous.

"So, I suggest that you think about that when you are reconsidering my friendly request. Thank you for your time." She said, smiling, as she takes the warrant then leaves the office.

"She got to you, didn't she?" Jenny asked Tubbs. It was later in the day and Tubbs had to think over that lawyer's threat. "She's just trying to scare you." Jenny said. "Doesn't change the fact that she was right. I did lie to get that warrant." Tubbs said as he runs his hands over his eyes.

"This is not on you. This is all on me." Jenny said. "Well, I helped." I added. "I'm not looking for an apology. I did what I thought was right and so did you two." Tubb said. "So, what are we gonna do?" I asked them and we all share a look before Tubb sighs.

"Well... if she follows through with her threat, it's over. So we need to get out ahead of this. Get them before they get us." Tubb said then he looks over at Jenny. "I need you to press your C.I. for something, anything that we can use, 'cause the Bhullars can't win." He said and Jenny placed a hand on his shoulder. "I got your back." She said and she walks away from him, pats my shoulder as she walks by and I follow her out of the office.

Later, we pulled up to the gas station and park next to a pump where Bryce was there waiting on the other side of the pump. We get out of the car and stay on our side as Bryce hands us some papers.

"I nearly got nailed taking that." He said and I come up next to her to look at the papers. "What am we looking at here?" I asked him. "It's a shipping manifest. Shows all the routes they've set up for transport." He replied. "How many of these are in play already?" Jenny asked. "I don't know. Some, not all. You caught them early in their expansion. But make no mistake, they're a determined bunch." He said.

"What about the distro on the other end of these destinations?" I asked him and he scoffs. "Look, ladies, I-I'm not a detective, okay?" He said, defensively, then takes the gas pump out of his truck. "Can't you, uh, run forensics or something? Like, magnifying glasses and all that?" He asked, nervously.

"Bryce, you did good." Jenny assures him. "I don't feel good. I am in the wind, all right? It's more dangerous now than when I was just driving the damn stuff." Bryce said.

"Tell me about Tonya Wallis. What's her job at the operation?" Jenny asked him. From what she told me, Tonya's boyfriend was working with the Bhullars and was shipping their drugs but then he got killed and that's how Max and her friends ended up with the bag of money and drugs as they found his wrecked truck. But it seems she's taking her boyfriend's place of working for Ren. "Um, she...she doesn't do much. She just runs errands, picks up food. Same things she did as a waitress, just gets paid more. Yeah, Tonya's a good person. She just needs the cash. I'd like to just leave her out of this." Bryce said.

"She made her choice. She works for the Bhullars." Jenny said. "Why don't you tell me what I gotta do to make this good?" Bryce asked. "We need proof the drugs were at the ranch. Counting on you." Jenny tells him before we get into her jeep and we take off.

"The schedule and truck delivery routes for the Bhullar drugs." Jenny tells Cassie as the three of us gather at the station and look over the paper Bruce gave us. "Your C.I. came through." Cassie said and Jenny sighs. "It's a start, but i-it's not enough yet. I...We're checking the endpoints and they still need proof of the drugs." Jenny said and I run my hands over my face.

"Okay, so what aren't you two telling me?" Cassie asked us. "Veer's lawyer is threatening a lawsuit. Tubb's in terrible trouble." I explained and Jenny sighs. "It's my fault." Jenny said, angry and annoyed. "You're not fully to blame here, Jenny. Like I said, I helped." I tell her and then it was Cassie's turn to sigh.

"Look, with everything on your plate, I hate to even ask for help, but we might have a problem." She said. "What's going on?" Jenny asked her. "We can't find Richard Ford. His family's really worried." Cassie said just as Poppernak runs over to us.

"Hey, there's a situation." He said, panicked, as he breathed heavily. "Tubb's been shot." He said and my heart jumped in my chest. "What?" Jenny and I said, shocked. "At his house. Paramedics on the way." Poppernak said and we head out.

We make it to Tubb's house and Jenny, Cassie and I run in as paramedics and police officers were doing their jobs. "Is he stable?" Jenny asked as we come into his kitchen and see him on the stretcher as the paramedics work on keeping him stable and alive.

"Tubb." Jenny said as she comes up to him. "Keep pressure on that." The EMT tells the medic. "Tubb, you okay?" Jenny asked as she comes to Tubb's side. "We're gonna need to hang another liter of fluid!" Another medic shouts.

"Who did this? Who shot you?" Jenny asked and she leans in as Tubb whispers in her ear and the medics roll him out of the building and Jenny had a look of shock and disbelief on her face.

"We just got back from the hospital. Tubb is in surgery right now." Jenny tells the whole station after we got back from the hospital. "But rest assured, he's in good care. This is never easy, one of our own being taken down, but the most important thing to remember is to never stop moving. The man who shot him, Richard Ford, is our number-one priority right now. Every resource in our arsenal is gonna be made available. State police has been notified to conduct an immediate manhunt." Jenny tells the officers, who all look worried, upset and disturbed.

"We know this is difficult, but Tubb would want us to put in our best effort. So let's do this for him." I said and a few officers nodded at this. "Okay, let's get to work." Jenny finished and all the officers get to work and I pat Jenny's back as she walks over to Tubb's office.

"We'll find him." I assure her then I hear her phone go off and she pulls it out. "It's Bryce." She mutters to me. "You want me to come with?" I asked her and she shakes her head. "I got it. I need you here to help. I'll call you if anything change." She said and I nod as she walks out.

For the next couple of hours, I did my best to locate Richard with the other officers until Jenny texts me and said to meet her and Cassie at the Ford's house. I immediately make my way there and we have a talk with Mona.

Cassie handed her a paper with lots of coded text messages on it. "It seems like some kind of a code, but we can't work it out." Cassie tells her. "I'm sorry, but what does this have to do with anything? Shouldn't you be looking for my husband?" Mona asked.

"Right now, Richard's on a mission to take down whoever he thinks is responsible for killing Mason." I tell her. "This has nothing to do with that." Mona said. You've been receiving and sending these coded messages for months." Cassie said and Mona looks at her, disbelieving.

"Mona, Richard shot Sheriff Tubb." Jenny said and Mona turns her frightened look to her. "Is he dead?" She asked. "He's still in surgery, but Richard could have killed him." Jenny explained. "Unless he hears the truth, he could do a lot worse." I added.

"Mona, please, I need you to be honest with us." Jenny pleads and Mona looks down and takes a deep breath. "I would text when I needed more drugs." She admitted and Jenny's jaw drops and my eyes widen and Cassie nods. "Okay." Jenny said, getting over the shock.

"They'd reply with a meet time. I tried to stop, I swear." Mona said. "You know you could have come to me." Jenny tells her. "I know. I just didn't want to believe that it was true. That it was my fault that Mason..." Mona cries. "It's not your fault." Jenny tells her, firmly.

"How long have you been using?" I asked Mona. "I got bucked off my horse about four years ago? Took a bad fall." She said. "Yeah, I-I think I remember that." Jenny said. "I was on painkillers...Oxycodone for a while. I tried everything to get off... physical therapy, hypnosis." Mona admits. "I'm guessing Richard doesn't know any of this." said Jenny and Mona chuckles.

"He was so proud of me for getting through it." She said as Jenny runs her hands up and down Mona's shoulder. "We're gonna need your dealer's info." Cassie said. "Are you gonna tell Richard?" She asked and I could see fear in her eyes. "Well, it may be the only way to bring him back." I said and Mona looked beyond terrified as she looks over at Jenny.

"I don't know if I can face him." She said, her voice breaking, then she goes and hugs Jenny. Minutes later, Jenny's phone rings and she looks at it then goes to stand out the porch. I begin to wonder if it's Bryce as Jenny told me that he never showed up at the gas station.

After a few minutes, I go and check on her and noticed she had a shocked look on her face. "Jenny? Everything okay?" I asked her and she turns to me. "That was Travis. He told me that Bryce is dead."
