so what's it about?

Despite certain actions that may suggest otherwise, Sawyer Lee is trying to become a better person. She has goals — ones that may seem impossible right now, like no more getting into fist fights with people in the hallways — but goals all the same. But it never works. Every year, she winds up in detention. Every year, her mother comments about how disappointed she is, and why can't Sawyer be more like her angel twin brother, Wyatt?

There's something festering within Sawyer. Something dark, something angry, something that makes her lash out and act before she even knows what she's doing. She can blink and suddenly someone's nose is gushing blood. She doesn't know how to stop this demon that thirsts for violence, but she has figured out how to ease it. That's with Quidditch.

Hitting things with bats is therapeutic. She can whack something that isn't a person, somewhat satisfying that thing that yearns for blood. But that's as far as her enjoyment of the sport goes. In fact, she's been actively trying to get off the team for a while now.

And then there's Oliver Wood, her brother's best friend, who is hell-bent on making her appreciate Quidditch as more than just an outlet for her anger. It may seem like it's only that on the surface. But Oliver has another mission: to save Sawyer from herself.

personal notes:

— Will I ever stop being blown away by Taryn's work? The answer is no, no I will not. Every time I read this book, I'm once again FLOORED by her intricate style and descriptions. I definitely fangirled when she followed me back after I started SKOD back in 2019. I hope to read more of her books soon!

— This story gave me a new appreciation for Oliver Wood that I didn't have before. Her version of his character is simply amazing and I want to hold him forever. It's nice to see him with more personality traits than "I live and breathe Quidditch", and she gave him a reason for loving the sport so much.

—(Also, Taryn introduced me to Laurence Coke as a faceclaim, and he now plays one of my OCs as well. Coincidentally named Oliver, too.)

— Sawyer is one of my favorite OCs ever. She's so complex and interesting, and I love the fact that she does things that are unequivocally wrong. Taryn doesn't shy away with the concept of "learning behaviors from your abusers", but she also has Sawyer work toward breaking that cycle, which is so! important!

— Sawyer's friends are absolutely wonderful characters. Their love for each other is obvious even though they act like typical teenagers and fight sometimes. I mean, Taryn made me like Marcus Flint. Witchcraft, I say!

— Jeremy Knox is my favorite person on the planet and he's not even real so honestly it's time for me to go die I guess :/

— HUFFLEPUFF REPRESENTATION!

— The characters aren't walking stereotypes of their houses. Sawyer is a Hufflepuff because she values honesty and loyalty, but she acts the furthest from your typical person from the house. Her best friends are all in Slytherin and they aren't evil, conniving, monsters like they're made to be in the books. Like I said, she made me like Flint.

— Sawyer is obviously older than Harry, so seeing him as this teeny tiny baby as opposed to a larger-than-life figure is adorable.

— If you're looking for a HP fic with unique characters and fantastic writing, SKOD is definitely what you should read.
