THE RUNNING TOOTHPICK - 37
Returning home from the exhibition, Bi Bi's mother gifted her some paintings to embellish with colored sand. As she opened the package, she discovered that each set of paintings included two images: one fully colored and the other merely outlined. Curiously, accompanying the colored sand packages was a toothpick. Bi Bi found it peculiar; a toothpick seemed more like a toy than a tool for crafting. However, her grandfather had advised her against flossing with toothpicks, citing potential gaps between teeth. Bi Bi hesitated but eventually realized the toothpick's purpose was to peel off stickers.
With a sigh of relief, she set the toothpick aside and focused on sprinkling colored sand on the outlined picture. The toothpick, feeling neglected, protested:
I served my purpose and was discarded... how dull! This girl doesn't appreciate me at all!I used you to peel off the sticker; now you can rest! Conscious of its feelings, the toothpick rolled into a corner. However, after a while, Bi Bi realized that her colored sand distribution was uneven. Some areas had too much sand, while others lacked it. Mr. Ngoai suggested:Use a toothpick to spread the sand thinly; it's both beautiful and economical!Yes! – Bi Bi turned around to retrieve the toothpick, but it had mysteriously disappeared. Despite crawling on the floor and searching, it proved elusive. Frustrated, Bi Bi sought her grandfather's help. He reassured her:Let me find it! Despite searching around Bi Bi's location, her grandfather couldn't locate the toothpick. Calling out gently, he said:Toothpick, where are you? Come out here with me... Still unseen, he continued:Bi Bi doesn't dislike toothpicks! Bi Bi added:Toothpick, I'm sorry, come out with me! Finally, the toothpick rolled over, tickling his foot. Bending down, he discovered the tiny toothpick. Guiding Bi Bi, he explained how to spread the colored sand thinly and evenly. With a toothpick in control, the sand grains formed a beautiful and precise painting. The toothpick was delighted, encouraging the sand grains to follow Bi Bi's lead.
After completing the painting, Bi Bi gently placed the toothpick in her pencil box, saying, "Stay here; I'll call you when I paint another picture!" She then compared the finished artwork with a sample painting but couldn't find it. Seeking her grandfather's help again, he called out for the missing model painting. It appeared at his feet, and he handed it to Bi Bi, who noticed the little girl in the painting had plump, rosy cheeks.
In the evening, Bi Bi posed a question:
Grandpa, why do toothpicks and paintings seem to keep running away? It's not that they run away; it's because I'm not organized. If you keep your belongings in the right place, you won't have to search for them. They won't run away; you'll find them instantly when needed.
