Revelation
When Dev and Anna arrived at Annama and John's Kochi home, there was a tangible mixture of expectation and shock in the air. Standing next to Anna was Dev, the Maharashtrian man who bore a striking resemblance to the late Edward, ready to confront Edward's family. Edward's father, John, opened the door first and was immediately taken aback by what he saw.
John (in Malayalam, eyes widening): Mone? Edward?
The thought that he was seeing his son again made his heart skip a beat. After gently correcting him, Anna introduced Dev as Dev Malhotra, an Edward lookalike with a remarkable similarity. After a while, John's excitement subsided and was replaced with a bittersweet acceptance of reality.
Anna (softly): Papa,Devane kandumuttuka. Thadichathum melinjathumaaya oru nalla suhruthaanu (meet Dev. He's been a good friend through thick and thin.)
Though a little disappointed by the realization, John welcomed Dev with open arms. Edward's siblings, Aaron and Irene, expressed mixed feelings when they noticed the startling resemblance.P
Aaron (whispering to Irene): Prethathe kaanunnathu pole. Pakshe athu avanalla(It's like seeing a ghost. But it's not him.)
Edward's mother, Annamma, was as shocked inside the home. She couldn't control her feelings when she saw Dev's almost strange resemblance.
Annamma (in Malayalam, tearfully): Edward, ente makan(my son!)
Gently clearing up any confusion, Anna described the special circumstances surrounding their situation. Annamma gave Dev a conflicted hug as she realized what was going on. The sight of someone who looked like her beloved son made her heart overflow with both delight and sorrow.
Annamma (embracing Dev):Tum bilkul usake jaise dikhate ho(You look so much like him.)
Knowing how deeply Annamma felt, Dev returned the hug, giving her a brief moment of time to feel at ease. Bedridden from years of melancholy, Angelina was silent as she watched the spectacle from her room. A flash of familiarity flashed in her eyes as she beheld Dev as Edward.
Angelina (in a whisper): Uncle...
Dev gave Angelina a fist bump and an embrace, overjoyed by the connection and recognition. That small act revealed the special connection between them. Anna was extremely thankful that Dev was welcomed by Edward's family with such warmth as she watched the tearful reunion.
Dev (smiling): Hey champ, missed you.
There was an intense silence in the room the moment Angelina spoke for the first time after years of being silent. Each and every person in there felt the weight of those words, long suppressed. Her parents, Aaron and Irene, experienced a mix of shock and intense emotion.
Angelina (softly, breaking her silence): Yah vah nahi hai... lekin yah ghar jaisa lagata hai(It's not him... but it feels like home.)
Angelina's voice, previously mute, broke through the walls of her long silence, making the room seem to hold its breath. Tears were falling down Irene's and Aaron's faces as they tried to control their feelings. The importance of Angelina's breakthrough moved Anna, John, Dev, and Annamma just as much.
Irene (voice choked with tears): Angel, nee samsaarichu... valare naalukalkku shesham ni samsaarichu(you spoke... you spoke after so long.)
Aaron (embracing Angelina): Nammude maalaakha... aval veendum avalude sabdam kandethi(Our angel... she found her voice again.)
The living room of Annama and John's Kochi home was bathed in a lovely glow from the soft evening sun. Lost in a sea of recollections, Aaron reclined on the couch surrounded by pictures of the good times and laughing he used to have with his brother-in-law, Edward. The noises of happiness from far-off and priceless moments reverberated throughout the space.
Aaron (whispering to himself): Ed,kadalttheerathe yaathra ormmayundo? Ningalude saamcramika sandoshavum aalukale chirippikkanulla kazhivum... ningalkku evide nilkkan kazhinjirunnengil(do you remember the beach trip? Your infectious joy and ability to make people laugh at all... If only you could stay here.)
Dev walked into the room as Aaron's mind wandered through the maze of treasured recollections. His walk had a certain bounce to it, and there was a recognizable gleam in his eyes that mirrored the energy Aaron had grown to recognize with Edward.
Dev (softly): Hey there, Aaron. Aisa lagata hai ki aap yaadon mein khoe hue hain, aur mainne ise notice kiya hai. Kya aap unhe mere saath saajha karana chaahenge(You seem to be lost in memories, and I notice it. Would you mind sharing them to me?)
Taken aback for a minute, Aaron turned to face Dev. Dev's eyes revealed a sincere curiosity and a readiness to comprehend and absorb Aaron's emotional burden.
Aaron (with a sigh): Bas Ed ke saath bitae sukhad dinon ke baare mein soch raha hoon. Aap jaanate hain, unake paas har cheez ko jeevan mein laane ka yahi tareeka that(Just thinking back on the enjoyable days shared with Ed. You know, he had this way of bringing everything to life.)
Dev (nodding):Mainne usake baare mein bahut kuch suna hai. Kaash mujhe unase milane ka mauka milata(I've heard so much about him. Wish I had the chance to meet him.)
The room fell silent, poignantly, the weight of loss hanging heavy in the air. Seeing that Aaron was missing his brother-in-law, Dev made the decision to make the connection.
Dev (with a comforting smile): Aap jaanate hain, ve kahate hain ki kabhi-kabhi log doosaron dvaara chodi gai jagah ko bharane ke liye hamaare jeevan mein aate hain. Shaayad vaisa nahi, lekin apane anoothe tareeke see(You know, they say sometimes people come into our lives to fill the spaces left by others. Maybe not the same, but in their own unique way.)
With a gentle touch on Aaron's shoulder, Dev moved in toward him as though he was guided by some unspoken agreement. There was a silent understanding between them, a realization that their relationship went beyond words.
Aaron (smiling through the sadness): Tumhe pata hai, tumhaare andar usaki aatma hai. Aapaki aankhen use mere liye lagabhag vaastavik bana deti hain(You know, you kind of have his spirit in you. Your eyes almost make him real to me.)
Dev smiled warmly, amazed by the sentiment. Aaron embraced him then, not just as Dev but also as an attachment to Edward's treasured memories.
Aaron (hugging Dev tightly): Thanks, Dev. Ye bahut maayane rakhata hai. Jaise ki Ed ka ek tukada vaapas aa gaya ho, bhale hi ek pal ke liye hi sahi(It means a lot. Like having a piece of Ed back, even if just for a moment.)
Agnes and Sunny, Anna's parents, were sitting in their comfortable living room in Kochi. The place was familiar and had usually made me feel at ease, but now there was a note of surprise and perplexity. The man standing in front of them, Dev, was strikingly similar to their late son-in-law, Edward.
Agnes (whispering to Sunny): Sunny, kya main cheezen dekh raha hoon, ya kya vah sachamuch Edward jaisa dikhata hai(am I seeing things, or does he really look like Edward?)"
Sunny narrowed his eyes, attempting to take in the scenario as it actually was. Sensing their confusion, Dev made the decision to confront the big issue.
Dev (smiling): Main samajhata hoon ki yah thoda ajeeb lag sakata hai, lekin main Edward nahi hoon. Main Anna ka dost Dev hoon(I understand that it may seem a little odd, but I'm not Edward. I'm Anna's friend Dev.)
Anna (entering the room): Mumma, Papa, mujhe samajhaane do. Yah Dev hai. Haan, vah kaafi had tak Edward jaisa dikhata hai, lekin vah ek acha dost bhi hai. Yah kaisa ajeeb sanyog hai(let me explain. This is Dev. Yes, he looks a lot like Edward, but he's also a great friend. What an odd coincidence it is.)
Sunny (looking at Anna and Dev): Yah keval sanyog hai? Aisa prateet hota hai ki vah mahaz ek sanyog se kaheen adhik hai, Anna. Kya aap nishchit hain ki koi rishta nahi hai(Just a coincidence? He appears to be more than just a coincidence, Anna. Are you certain there's no relationship?)
Taking a deep breath, Anna readied herself to tell her parents about the complexities of her life's ups and downs.
Anna (sincerely): Mumma, Papa, bataane ke liye bahut kuch hai. Shaadi ke liye majaboor kie jaane ke baad, samay ke saath Dev aur main kareeb aa gae. Hamane ek saath bahut kuch saha, utaar-chadhaav ka uchit anubhav kiya aur antatah alag hone ka nirnay liya. Ab jab Dev aage badh gaya hai to meri apani jindagi hai(there's a lot to tell. After being forced into marriage, Dev and I grew close over time. We went through a lot together, experienced our fair share of highs and lows, and ultimately made the decision to split ways. Now that Dev has moved on, I have my own life.)
Agnes (confused): Haalaanki, Edward ki yaadon ke baare mein kya khyaal hai? Khushi ke baare mein kya khyaal hai(How about Edward's memories, though? How about Khushi?)
Anna (teary-eyed): Vah hamaari beti hai, Khushi. Vah mere aur Edward ke saath thi. Dev aur mainne talaak ke baad apani jindagi aage badhaane ka phaisala kiya aur meri doosari beti Jhanvi us yaatra ka hissa hai(She is our daughter, Khushi. She was with me and Edward. Dev and I made the decision to go on with our lives after our divorce, and my second daughter Jhanvi is a part of that journey.)
Her parents listened intently as Anna described the various stages of her life, from the forced marriage to the unanticipated friendship with Dev. They took in the intricacies of her story.
Sunny (softly):Hum jeevan mein apratyaashit mod ka saamana karate hain. Aapane spasht roop se nirnay le liye hain aur baadhaon par kaaboo pa liya hai. Anna, jo maayane rakhata hai vah yah hai ki aap khush hain(We encounter unexpected turns in life. You've obviously made decisions and overcome obstacles. What counts, Anna, is that you're happy.)
A gloom fell over the room as Anna told her parents about the different phases of her life and mentioned Dev's second marriage to Anika. The air thickened, and Anna felt a silent melancholy surround her heart. Agnes and Sunny, her parents, saw the range of emotions on their daughter's face.
Anna (softly, with a hint of sadness): Hamaare vibhaajan ke baad, Dev ne ek alag nirnay liya. Anika doosari mahila thi jisase unhonne shaadi ki. Main unake phaisale ka sammaan karata hoon kyonki yah unaka phaisala tha(Following our split, Dev made a different decision. Anika was the second woman he married. I respect his decision since it was his.)
Agnes (compassionately): Life has a habit of taking unforeseen turns, Anna, my dear. Seeing someone you previously shared your life with go on is difficult. But always keep in mind that your happiness comes first.
Anna explored her parents Agnes and Sunny's love story as she peeled back the layers of her family's past. Listening carefully, Dev understood the minute complexities of a story that had formed Anna's very being.
Anna (narrating): Mere maata-pita, Agnes aur Sunny, ki ek romaanchak aur jatil prem kahaani thi, Dev. Ek saath rahane ke liye, ve apane parivaaron aur samaaj ke maanadandon se baadhaon ko door karate hain. Ek samay hamaare parivaar ka kareebi raha Rony mere Papa Sunny se dvesh rakhata tha. Rony meri Mumma Agnes ke prati aasakt tha, bhale hi usane Sunny ki bahan Lynette Chachi se shaadi ki this(My parents, Agnes and Sunny, had an enthralling and complex love story, Dev. To be together, they overcome obstacles from their families and society norms. Once close to our family, Rony held grudges against my father, Sunny. Rony was obsessed with my mom Agnes even though he married Sunny's sister Lynette.)
Dev's perceptive mind began making connections, identifying a possible reason for the complex dynamics in Anna's family.
Dev (thoughtfully): Rony ke man mein Sunny ke liye jo napharat hai aur Agnes ke prati usaka junoon... kya aap maanate hain ki vah aapake parivaar ke saamane aane vaali kuch chunautiyon kee yojana bana raha hoga(The hatred that Rony has for Sunny and his obsession on Agnes... Do you believe he may have been planning some of the challenges that your family has faced?)
Anna (contemplating): Aisa ho sakata hai. Rony hamesha meri maan ke prati gahare junoon se prerit raha hai. Usane rishton mein tanaav paida kiya hai aur hamaare parivaar mein uthal-puthal machaane mein yogadaan diya hai. Yah vichaar ki vah is sabake peechhe ka mastermind ho sakata hai, pareshaan karane vaala hai(That may happen. Rony has always been driven by a deep obsession with my mother. He has strained relationships and contributed to the turmoil in our family. The idea that he could be the mastermind behind it all is unnerving.)
Dev (firmly): Hamen sach jaanana hoga, Anna. Agar Rony asali aparaadhi hai to hum use aapake parivaar ke saath chedachaad karane aur chot pahunchaane ki ijaajat nahi de sakate(We have to know the truth, Anna. We cannot allow Rony to continue manipulating and hurting your family if he is the real culprit.)
Annama (nostalgically): John aur meri prem kahaani ek vyast shahar ke beech shuroo hui thi. Us samay, main Angelina thi, jo apane andhe bhaiya aur lakavaagrast maan ke liye jeene ke liye sangharsh kar rahi thi. John, jo us samay Guru Jayaprakash ke naam se jaane jaate the, apane maata-pita ki maut ka badala lena chaahate the aur duniya ke prati shatruta rakhate the(John and I had our love story beginning in the midst of a busy city. Back then, I was Angelina, struggling to live for my blind brother and paralyzed mother. John, who was then known as Guru Jayprakash, was seeking retribution for the death of his parents and harbored an enmity against the world.)
As Annama recounted the complex details that had interwoven their lives, her eyes gleamed with nostalgia.
