Beneath the Music
There was tension when Edward and his family visited Reynash the following morning. The rich family was well-known for both their religious fervor and their wealth. Reynash was quite critical of Anna and wanted Rahul to wed someone else. Edward had a protective feeling for Anna, which fueled his inner turmoil and rage. Edward went up to Reynash, intending to deal with the matter head-on. He spoke in a calm, focused tone despite the tense atmosphere in the room. "Mr. Reynash, main samajhata hoon ki aapaki chintae hai, lekin Anna ek adbhut insaan hain, aur vah bhi kisi any ki tarah hi khushi ki hakadaar hai(I understand you have concerns, but Anna is a wonderful person, and she deserves happiness just like anyone else.)" Reynash, uncompromising in his convictions, gave a sharp look in return. "Edward, hamaare reeti-rivaaj aur siddhaant jabaradast arth rakhate hai. Rahul ko aise vyakti ke saath rahane ki jaroorat hai jo unake moolyon ko saajha karata ho, lekin Anna nahi(our customs and principles hold tremendous meaning. Rahul needs to be with someone who shares their values, and Anna doesn't.)" Even as Edward became more irritated, he remained calm and chose not to get angry. "Mr. Reynash, main aapake moolyon ki prashansa karata hoon. Haalaanki, pyaar bina shart hai, aur Rahul aur Anna ka pyaar sachcha hai. Mujhe ummeed hai ki aap unhe khush rahane ke liye protsaahit karane ke liye ise apane dil mein pa sakate hai. Main yah nahi dekh sakata ki Anna ke baare mein jhoothe aarop lagae ja rahe hai. Vah ek adbhut ladaki hai jo khush rahane ki hakadaar hai.(I admire your values. However, love is unconditional, and Rahul and Anna's love is sincere. I'm hoping you can find it in your heart to encourage them to be happy. I can't watch as false accusations about Anna are made. She is an amazing girl who deserves to be happy.)" Reynash's face grew even more harsh in response. Reynash's ingrained disdain for Anna persisted, and the exchange highlighted the sharp discrepancy between their morals and feelings. Edward was clearly in favor of Anna, even in the face of resistance from Reynash, who had a deep hatred for her. There was a sense of expectation in the air as Edward and his mother, Annama, sat in their comfortable living room. After speaking to Annama about his situation with Rahul's father, he turned to her for advice and insight. They had a close relationship, and Edward was aware of the warmth and weight of his mother's comments. "Edward, main chaahata hoon ki aap jaane ki sab kuch ke baavajood, aapane adbhut dhairy aur nisvaarthata dikhai hai. Na keval aap Anna ke liye apani vyaktigat bhaavanao ko tyaag rahe hai, balki aap yah sunishchit karane ke liye har sambhav prayaas kar rahe hai ki vah khush hai, bhale hi isaka matalab use aur us aadami ko ek saath laana ho jisase vah pyaar karati hai. Mujhe aapaki paripakvata aur usaki bhalai ke prati aapake drdh samarpan par behad garv hai(I want you to know that despite everything, you have shown amazing fortitude and selflessness. Not only are you giving up on your personal feelings for Anna, but you're also going above and beyond to make sure she's happy, even if it means bringing her and the man she loves together. I'm extremely proud with you for your maturity and your steadfast dedication to her wellbeing.)" Edward took solace from his mother's remarks. He was aware of how important Annama's support was and how her faith in him motivated him to put things right. Annama acknowledged the complex nature of the circumstance with a nod. "Edward, main aapaki chintaon ki saraahana kar sakata hoon. Lekin dhyaan rakhe ki har samasya ka samaadhaan hota hai. Hum aakhirakaar sab kuch sulajha lenge aur Anna ke saath aapake romance ko avismaraneey bana denge. Chalie ab main Sunny aur apani prem kahaani ko aage badhaata hoon(I can appreciate your concerns. But keep in mind that there is a solution for every issue. We'll work things out eventually and make your romance with Anna an unforgettable one. Let me now carry on Sunny and my love story.)" Edward agreed, curious to know more about their family's entwined love stories and hoping that the past would provide some light on their current struggles. Edward listened intently, trying to absorb as much information as possible from Annama's next chapter in their family's history.
28 years earlier, February
During a visit to the college library, Angelina and Sunny, who were still magnets with each other, got into yet another furious disagreement. They were both popular for having strong personalities, and their encounter in the library would go down in history as one of their most memorable moments. The library was crowded with diligent learners deeply engaged in their studies on this quiet day. Amid piles of medical textbooks, Angelina had been studying hard at a table in the corner. Her brow furrowed in concentration, she was absorbed in her notes. Conversely, Sunny had arrived at the library in search of a peaceful nook where he might compose some new music. He was working on a new melody while seated at a neighboring table with his guitar and a notebook, slowly strumming to himself. Both of them had no idea that Sunny's guitar playing had gotten louder over time and caught the attention of other students who were enthralled with his music. The serene atmosphere of the library was broken as the small audience started to gather. Already under pressure from her studies, Angelina lost her temper. With a glare in her eyes, she hurried over to Sunny's table. "Kya aap apane sthaan se avagat hai(Are you aware of your location?)" Her voice was rough and agitated as she exclaimed, "Yah ek library hai, koi concert hall nahi(This is a library, not a concert hall.)" Reacting with some astonishment to the abrupt dispute, Sunny shot out, "Shaant ho jao, Angelina. Bas thoda sa sangeet bajata hai. Aisa nahi hai ki main koi rock concert kar raha hoon(Calm down, Angelina. Just a little music is played. It's not as though I'm playing a rock concert.)" The librarian and students saw Angelina and Sunny's growing vociferation as they carried on with their disagreement in the library. There was a noticeable tension, and their classmates looked at each other curiously. With a furious expression, Angelina replied, "Sunny, yah gambheer adhyayan ka sthaan hai! Aapake sangeet ke kaaran har kisi ko dhyaan kendrit karane mein pareshaani ho rahi hai. Yah behad asabhy hai(this is a place for serious study! Everyone is having trouble focusing because of your music. It is extremely rude.)" With a playful sparkle in his eyes, Sunny grinned back, saying, "Oh, chalo, Pari, thoda ji lo! Iname se kuch logo ko sangeet se bahut laabh ho sakata hai, kyonki isame prerana dene ki shakti hai. Paathyapustakon aur parikshaon ke alaava bhi jeevan mein bahut kuch hai(Oh, come on, Angel, live a bit! Some of these folks might benefit greatly from music, as it has the power to inspire. There is more to life than textbooks and examinations.)" With even more furrowed brows, Angelina snapped out, "Prerana, shaayad, lekin kisi aur ki dhyaan kendrit karane mein asamarthata ki keemat par nahi. Aap aisa vyavahaar kar rahe hai jaise ki aapaki sanak doosaron ke adhyayan ki aavashyakata se adhik mahatvapoorn hai(Inspiration, perhaps, but not at the price of someone else's inability to focus. You're behaving as though your whims are more significant than the necessity for others to study.)" With a slight backswing in his chair, Sunny continued to gently strum his guitar and answered, "Mera maanana hai ki yah aap hi hai jinhe thoda aaraam karane ki jaroorat hai. Aaie ek sauda kare: yadi aap agale das second mein maanav shareer ki teen mukhy dhamaniyon ke naam bata sake to main saamaan pack karake chala jaoonga(I believe it's you who needs to chill out a bit. Let's strike a deal: I'll pack up and go if you can name the three main arteries in the human body in the next ten seconds.)" Never one to back down from a challenge, Angelina responded with brisk accuracy, "Carotid, femoral, and coronary." With a giggle, Sunny said, "Theek hai, aap yah round jeete(Okay, you win this round.)" He started to prepare his guitar so that he might fulfill the librarian's request. There was some lighthearted banter at the end of their dispute, but the tension persisted. There was a twinge of admiration in their eyes as they departed the library, going their separate ways. Even in the middle of their arguments, they were unable to ignore the spark that bonded them, and it was this intense desire that would come to characterize their complex and intense relationship going forward.
Present, May 16, 2010:
Edward was uncomfortable and perplexed about Sunny—Anna's father—for no apparent explanation. John was the man who had raised and supported him all of his life, and he had always loved John who is his dad. When he learned that Sunny had been Annama's previous love, a range of complicated feelings emerged in him. "Mere saath apani kahaani saajha karane ke liye dhanyavaad, maan, lekin mujhe yah sveekaar karana hoga ki Sunny ko apane poorv pyaar ke roop mein chitrit karana thoda abhibhoot karane vaala hai. John hamesha se mere Papa rahe hai, isalie mere liye yah sveekaar karana mushkil hai(Thank you for sharing your story with me, Mom, but I have to admit that picturing Sunny as your former love is a little overwhelming. John has always been my father, therefore this is difficult for me to accept.)" Annama smiled reassuringly at Edward, knowing how he felt. "Main ise pahachaanata hoon, Edward. Is baare mein virodhaabhaas mahasoos karana saamaany hai. John aapake liye jo adbhut Appa raha hai, use koi bhi aapase chheen nahi sakata. Haalaanki Sunny aur mera ek saath ateet hai, lekin vaastav mein jo maayane rakhata hai vah ek-doosare ke liye aur hamaare dvaara banae gae parivaar ke liye pyaar hai. Please har cheez ke saath taalamel bithaane ke liye apana samay len; jab aap taiyaar hon, to hum is par aage charcha kar sakate hai(I recognize that, Edward. It's normal to feel conflicted about this. Nothing can take away from the amazing father John has been to you. Although Sunny and I have a past together, what really counts is the love we have for each other and the family we've created. Kindly take your time to adjust to everything; when you're ready, we may discuss this further.)" Seeing the uncertainty and worry in Edward's eyes, Annama sought to reassure him of her unwavering love for her true soulmate, John. "Edward, main chaahata hoon ki aap yah jaan len ki koi bhi—Sunny bhi nahi—mere pyaar aur aatmeey saathi—John ko kabhi nahi chheen sakata. John ne achche aur bure samay mein mera saath diya hai aur samay ke saath hamaara bandhan behatar hota ja raha hai. Ek-doosare ke prati hamaara pyaar ateet se aprabhaavit hai, jo hamaare jeevan ka sirph ek adhyaay hai. Sunny mere ateet ka hissa tha aur usaka bada prabhaav tha, lekin vah hamaare parivaar ko baandhane vaale sambandhon ke liye khatara nahi hai(I want you to know that no one—not even Sunny—can ever take away my love and soulmate—John. John has supported me through good times and bad, and our bond continues to grow better with time. Our love for one another is unaffected by the past, which is just one chapter in our lives. Sunny was a part of my past and had a big impact, but he doesn't pose a threat to the ties that bind our family.)" Edward was grateful for his mother's warm comments and relieved to hear her declare her love for John again. It assisted him in starting to process the range of complicated feelings sparked by this discovery. "Main aabhaari hoon, Amma. Yah sunana mahatvapoorn tha. Main jaanata hoon ki pyaar aur hamaara karibi rishta hamaare parivaar ki neenv hai. Mujhe yah sab karane ke liye kuch samay ki aavashyakata hogi, lekin mujhe aapake aur Papa ke pyaar par bharosa hai(I'm grateful, Mom. That was important to hear. I am aware that love and our close relationship are the foundation of our family. I'll need some time to take it all in, but I have faith in the love that you and Papa share.)" Annama extended her hand to grasp Edward's, highlighting the steadfast resilience of their family's love and cohesion. Edward was certain that his love for both of his parents would never wane and that he would eventually learn to appreciate and comprehend the complexities of his family's past and present. Speaking from the bottom of her heart, Annama wanted to reassure her young son and show her love. "Yaad rakhe ki main tumhe shabdon se kaheen adhik pyaar karata hoon, Edward. Aapaki khushi mere liye bahut maayane rakhati hai kyonki aap hamaare parivaar ke ek anamol sadasy hai. Main tumase kitana pyaar karata hoon ise koi bhi kabhi nahi badal paega(Remember that I love you more than words can possibly say, Edward. Your happiness means the world to me because you are a treasured member of our family. Nothing will ever be able to change how much I love you.)" The words of his mother struck a deep chord with Edward. Her love was a continual source of consolation and encouragement in his life, and he knew that their family's love would always be their unwavering basis regardless of the difficulties or revelations they encountered. "main aabhaari hoon Amma. Main aapaki samajh aur aaraam ko mahatv deta hoon, aur main aapase pyaar bhi karata hoon. I love you(I'm thankful Mom. I value your understanding and comfort, and I love you too.)" They were reminded of the unbreakable ties that constituted their family as a deep sense of love and unity permeated their talk at that precise moment.
