21. Promises

"Halima Audu Kalshingi never talk while your parents are talking!" Hajjo says angrily. They've been on the same thing for over an hour.

"Haba mummy, how do you just expect me to just forgive him like that?" Halima says exasperated.

"Leema baby, let me ask you a question, if you were to see Sa'eed in your room kissing a girl, what would you do?" Audu finally talks. Throughout the past hour, he hasn't said a thing.

"Daddy that won't ever happen. If it does, I'll never forgive him." Halima says picturing one thousand and one ways to kill the girl, then Sa'eed.

"Exactly Halima. Now, I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. Sa'eed will be here in a few minutes, if you don't forgive him, consider yourself an orphan." Audu says walking out.

"Do this for yourself and your marriage Halima, it's for your own good. You can't leave your husband's home one month after marriage, it's not done. Reconcile with him. You're getting discharged today." Hajjo follows her husband.

Halima looks at the door, it's not like she doesn't want to forgive him, she does. It's just that she's still deeply hurt by the fact that he doesn't trust her. She still can't wrap her head around the fact that he didn't even want to listen to her. But then again, her parents are right and she really misses cuddling her husband.

"Salamu alaiki habeebtee." Sa'eed says holding a bouquet of chocolates, he had seen it in her diary as part of what she wants. The rest will have to come one by one, he can't have her knowing he read her diary.

Halima's eyes light up at the sight of the bouquet but she ignores him nonetheless. Sa'eed sits beside her and engulfs her in a hug. But Halima doesn't return the hug, her hands stay limp beside her but Sa'eed doesn't pick offense. He knows she's bound to be angry at him.

"Sweetheart I'm sorry." Sa'eed nuzzles his head in the crook of Halima's neck. Even though she's been in the hospital for two days, her chocolate-y scent is still there.

He starts planting lingering kisses from her collar bone, to the back of her nape, to her neck then to her collar bone again. He kisses her cheeks, both left and right, her eyes, her nose before pecking her lips. All the while, Halima is resisting the urge to jump on him and hug the living daylight out of him.

Seeing that Halima isn't pushing him away, Sa'eed slips his hand around Halima's waist, using his finger tips to trace non-existent patterns.

"Roohie, hayatee, qalbee, noorie, aynee, I'm sorry. Am i forgiven?" Sa'eed nuzzles deeper into her neck, his nails slightly grazing her stomach.

"Yes." Halima finally gives in, tears seeping out of her eyes.

"Huh? I didn't hear what you said." Sa'eed smirks.

"I said you're forgiven." Halima says finally hugging him and letting all the remaining pent up sadness out. After a few minutes Sa'eed pulled away only to notice she had been crying.

"Subhanallah, stop crying. I'm sorry okay. Your tears break my heart. I love you and will never stop. Marriage is all about mu bata mu shirya so this little fight shouldn't stop the love you have for me from blossoming." Sa'eed kisses her and she returns the kiss.

"I won't In Shaa Allah. I love you, just so you know, I need a new nickname. All those you mentioned are too common." Halima scrunches up her nose making Sa'eed laugh, his wife is back.

"Okay reina."

"Kinda lame."

"Baby."

"Too common."

"Heartbeat."

"Nah. "

"Okay, I'll pick out another one, right now, we need to go home." Halima nods enthusiastic and Sa'eed grins before calling the doctor. Aftee the last check up has been conducted, Halima is discharged and they leave.

"Yes Lash, I'm done with everything. I'm taking the midnight flight back to Nigeria. I've already booked the flight."

"Okay good. Make sure you call me once you land. I'll come pick you and we'll proceed to stage two."

"Okay, bye."

The next morning

Halima wakes up with a smile etched on her face. No more trust issues. They made three promises to each other last night.

To never hide things from each other.

To never go to bed angry with each other.

To never look at another man or woman - however the case maybe - the same way they look at each other or even better.

That is convincing enough for her. She looks over to her bouquet of chocolate, one bar is missing, she's sure she hasn't taken any. Who could've taken it.

"I took it sweetheart." Sa'eed says in his groggy morning voice. Halima narrows her eyes at him.

"Why would you do that?"

"Because I love you."

"I hate you too." She says entering the walk-in closet then to the bathroom which is inside the earlier to perform ablution and pray Subh.

His laugh rings through the room making her smile a bit. She has missed that sound. After praying and taking a bath, she walks into the room to find Sa'eed. She shrugs, he must've gone to get them breakfast, after all he said she wouldn't cook till the end of the month which is one week from now.

She applies powder and just as she's about to line her eyes with kohl she hears that one annoying voice she dreads to here. She thinks she's just hallucinating when she doesn't hear it again, the doctor said the drug given to her might mess with her brain for the first three days.

She lines her eyes and picks a brown liner to line her lips when she hears the voice again. Is the medicine really that strong? She ignores it again and line her chapped lips before applying a good amount of moisturizer before smacking her lips and resting her head for some minutes.

She applies pink lip gloss and starts combining her hair before stopping abruptly and letting it fall to her shoulders. It isn't that long but Sa'eed likes twisting it for her like a child. After a good agonizing ten minutes, she's done combing the hair, she walks out, not bothering to cover it at all. After all she's the only one in her husband's home.

Walking into the small parlor she sees the owner of the voice she dreads.

"What the fuck is she doing here?" Halima booms, breaking a little pity session, her eyes fuming with rage.
